Pelosi, Nielsen clashed during border-security meeting: 'I reject your facts,' House speaker said, according to report

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/pelosi-...ject-your-facts

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen got into a tense confrontation this week, with the California Democrat interrupting Nielsen’s presentation on border security and illegal immigration, telling her “I reject your facts.”

The clash between the top House Democrat and a key member of President Trump's Cabinet occurred during a Wednesday meeting in the White House amid the impasse over the government shutdown, with Trump standing firm and demanding $5 billion for the border wall.

At one point during the meeting, according to the Wall Street Journal, Pelosi interrupted Nielsen, who was citing statistics related to the border, including how many criminal illegal immigrants attempted to enter the U.S. last year.

“I reject your facts,” Pelosi told Nielsen

“These aren’t my facts," Nielsen shot back. "These are the facts.”

Following the episode, Nielsen went to social media to criticize Pelosi and the Democrats for not wanting to hear about the issue of illegal immigration.

“I am disappointed that Dems did not want to hear from @DHSgov about the security & humanitarian crisis we are facing at the border,” Nielsen wrote. “They didn’t want to hear about criminal aliens, drug smugglers, smuggled & abused children or violent caravans trying to breach the border wall.”

“The crisis is not going away-it is getting worse. The status quo in funding & authorities for #DHS is irresponsible & makes our country less secure,” she continued. “Kicking the can down the road is not the answer. I look forward to engaging w Members who want to.”

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the second-ranking Senate Democrat, also criticized Nielsen’s presentation, telling Bloomberg that it “was not a credible presentation.”

“It was preposterous,” Durbin said. “At a time when we have the lowest level of apprehensions at the border — stopping people from coming in illegally — the lowest level historically, she is saying that we have all these terrorists and criminals and all these people on their way in.”

Nielsen reportedly told the Democrats at the meeting that border officials along the U.S.-Mexico border had apprehended about 3,000 people with terrorist ties and 17,000 criminals last year.

Pelosi also asked the DHS head whether she was counting anyone crossing the border illegally as having a criminal record, with the administration denying that’s how the figure was devised.

Wednesday’s meeting didn’t resolve the government shutdown as both sides continue to stick to their principles and refuse to concede.

On Friday, following another contentious meeting in the White House with congressional leaders, Trump warned that the partial government shutdown could last “years” and saying he could even declare a “national emergency” to bypass Congress if necessary to build the wall.

“We can call a national emergency [to build a border wall] because of the security of our country,” Trump told reporters in the Rose Garden, during a lengthy and impromptu press conference on Friday.

“I may do it,” he said, before adding, “If we can do it through a negotiated process, we’re giving it a shot.”

Trump’s 10 ‘terrorists’: Where are they?

WASHINGTON — For some time now, President Donald Trump has been encouraging people to think of Mexico as a portal for international terrorists who “pour” into the U.S. Except, he says, for 10 who were recently caught by the U.S.: “These are very serious people.”

These 10 do not exist, except as a federal statistic that Trump and his vice president put through a rhetorical grinder in service of describing emigrants from Mexico as a menace.

There is, in fact, genuine concern about the potential for Islamic extremists to make their way across the border into the U.S. But that concern applies more to the Canadian border, where Trump is not planning to put up a wall.

Thousands of active-duty U.S. troops are deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border to strengthen security, and the Department of Homeland Security has asked the Pentagon to keep them there through Jan. 31, defense officials said. About 4,000 troops were requested to stay on the border, with some troops being returning home in recent days.

Here is how the myth of the "very serious" 10 developed over the months, culminating this week in Trump's assertion that "we caught 10 terrorists. These are over the last very short period of time — 10."

REPORT: NO TERRORISTS THREAT FROM MEXICO

In July 2017, a State Department report on terrorism comes out, breaking down perceived threats by country, and it does not fit into Trump’s story about danger from the south.

It says: "There are no known international terrorist organizations operating in Mexico, no evidence that any terrorist group has targeted U.S. citizens in Mexican territory, and no credible information that any member of a terrorist group has traveled through Mexico to gain access to the United States."

At most, it notes that "Mexican government officials observed on social media an increase in terrorist group sympathizers in its territory over the previous year."

That report dwells much more on the northern neighbor, home to "Canada-based violent extremists inspired by terrorist groups such as ISIS and al-Qaida and their affiliates and adherents." Moreover, Canada has experienced episodes of terrorism at the hands of sympathizers of those organizations. And, the report says, Canada faces a "significant challenge in prosecuting individuals who have traveled abroad to engage in terrorism, due to the difficulty in proving association with terrorist organizations or having committed specific terrorist acts."

Yet the State Department credits both Canada and Mexico with cooperating with the U.S. on terrorism and strengthening protections. And no evidence has emerged that terrorists are pouring in from Canada, either.

THE ‘WATCH LIST’ IS GLOBAL

In January, a joint report by the Homeland Security and Justice departments states that Homeland Security had 2,554 “encounters” worldwide with people on a terrorist watch list who were trying to travel to the U.S. That breaks down to an average of seven per day, and is the seed of what becomes Trump’s claim about the “very serious” 10.

The vast majority, 2,170, were trying to come by air, with 335 by land and the rest by sea. Nothing ties them specifically to Mexico.

Vice President Mike Pence misrepresents the finding the next month, attributing all of those encounters to the Mexico border: "I learned yesterday at the Hidalgo border center that along the southern border of the United States, we actually still apprehend 1,100 individuals a day, who are attempting to enter this country illegally, including seven individuals a day who are either known or suspected terrorists."

There's more wrong with his statement than that.

The people encountered by Homeland Security were denied entry to the U.S., not apprehended en masse as Pence says. In some cases law enforcement authorities were notified for "appropriate action," says the report, giving no detail on arrests or any charges.

As well, it may be a stretch to characterize everyone on the watch list as a "known or suspected" terrorist. The list is an initial trip-wire identifying people who, rightly or wrongly, raise some concern. The standard for placing someone on the list is reasonable suspicion, a lower bar than the probable cause needed to arrest someone for an alleged crime.

In June, the average of seven per day grows to 10, without new statistics being announced. "On average, my department now blocks 10 known or suspected terrorists a day from traveling to or attempting to enter the United States," says Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

CANADA’S WORSE THAN MEXICO, REPORT FINDS

In September, the next annual State Department terrorism report is released, finding "no credible evidence indicating that international terrorist groups have established bases in Mexico, worked with Mexican drug cartels or sent operatives via Mexico into the United States. The U.S. southern border remains vulnerable to potential terrorist transit, although terrorist groups likely seek other means of trying to enter the United States." More episodes of terrorism are noted in Canada.

Late in the month, with the Trump administration signaling concern about Central American migrants making their way north, and Trump continually prodding for money to build his wall, the statistic is brought out, and misshapen, again.

"In the last fiscal year, we apprehended more than 10 terrorists or suspected terrorists per day at our southern border from countries that are referred to in the lexicon as other than Mexico," Pence says. "That means from the Middle East region."

The average of 10 a day has grown again, to more than 10. And Pence again says this all happened at the Mexico border.

This time, when Pence's office is asked about the claim, his people acknowledge the error. Later the same day, the vice president correctly attributes the number to all points of entry into the U.S.

Trump, though, continues to drum up fear about Muslim extremism coming via Mexico and migrants, tweeting Oct. 22: "Sadly, it looks like Mexico's Police and Military are unable to stop the Caravan heading to the Southern Border of the United States. Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in. I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National Emergeny. Must change laws!"

The next day he tells reporters in the Oval Office: "I spoke with Border Patrol this morning. ... They say that over the course of the year, over the course of many years, they have intercepted good and bad people, including people from the Middle East."

Yet he acknowledges, "There's no proof of anything."

ARE THEY REALLY TERRORISTS?

This month, Trump's proposed southern wall becomes the prickly centerpiece of a budget struggle that threatens to idle parts of the government starting Dec. 21 barring a deal.

In his contentious public meeting with the Democratic leaders, Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer, Trump makes a case for varied menaces from Mexico, describing those trying to get into the U.S. as carriers of disease — an assertion he did not support — and criminals.

He renders the average of 10 watch-list travelers per day encountered by Homeland Security last year as "10 terrorists," never mind suspects, recently "caught" trying to get in.

The White House's support for that assertion? The same report that got the ball weirdly rolling almost a year ago: a daily average of encounters in 2017, not 10 terrorists in the flesh, very serious or not.

Chris Wallace fact checks Sarah Huckabee Sanders on border
security

By Mark Moore

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders sparred with “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace when she defended President Trump’s claims that terrorists are pouring across the southern border.

The commander-in-chief has said he needs $5.6 billion for the barrier because drugs, human traffickers and terrorists are crossing the Mexican border into the US.

At a White House news conference last Friday, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Customs and Border Patrol stopped more than 3,000 “Special Interest Aliens” trying to get into the US via the border.

“But Special Interest Aliens are just people who come from countries that have ever produced a terrorist. They’re not terrorists themselves,” Wallace said to Sanders after showing a clip of Nielsen’s remarks.

“And the State Department says that there is, quote, their words: no credible evidence of any terrorist coming across the border from Mexico,” he added.

Sanders responded: “We know that roughly, nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists come into our country illegally, and we know that our most vulnerable point of entry is at our southern border.”

Wallace said he studied up on the issue because he knew Sanders would bring it up.

“Do you know where those 4,000 people come —

where they’re captured?,” Wallace asked her. “Airports.”

“Not always,” she said.

“At airports,” he insisted.

“The State Department says there hasn’t been any terrorists that they’ve found coming across the southern border with Mexico,” Wallace continued.

“It’s by air, it’s by land and it’s by sea. It’s all of the above,” she said, then tried to change the topic to overall border security.

“But one thing that you’re forgetting is that the most vulnerable point of entry that we have into this country is our southern border, and we have to protect it,” she said.

But Wallace wouldn’t relent and continued to hammer home his point, refuting the administration’s claim that terrorists are entering through the border rather than at airports.

“I’m not disagreeing with you that they’re coming through airports. I’m saying that they come by air, by land and by sea,” Sanders said.

And until the border is fully secured, she said, “the more that we’re going to have an influx, not just of terrorists but of human traffickers, drug inflow and people that are coming here to do American citizens harm.”

Passengers at Sea-Tac miss flights as TSA agents call out sick amid government shutdown

It's the end of day 16 of the partial government shutdown. And the impact of hundreds of thousands of federal employees not getting paid is taking a toll at Sea-Tac Airport.

TSA union officials say some agents are simply calling out sick, which at some airports is causing huge delays in the security process for passengers.

Sea-Tac was already dealing with a shortage of TSA agents before the government shutdown.

Now, the situation is even worse. Some have already quit since the shutdown started.

As others continue to work without pay, more are calling in sick.

At New York’s JFK International Airport, as many as 170 TSA employees have called out each day this week.

The number of people calling out sick have increased by 200 percent to 300 percent at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

As of Saturday night, KIRO 7 was still waiting to hear back for numbers at Sea-Tac International Airport, but airport and airline employees say they've noticed fewer agents and longer lines.

Sarah Burgisser works for one of the airlines.

She said early Saturday morning, passengers were waiting hours to get through security.

“It was a huge line,” Burgisser said. “I think it was just one guy who came to work.”

“Did anyone miss their flight because of the unexpected long lines?” KIRO 7’s Deedee Sun asked.

“When I was working last night, yeah, for sure. A lot, a lot of passengers,” Burgisser said. “I really feel sorry. We had to close the flight to be on time. Because - we give them a couple of minutes, but we can’t wait forever,” she said.

Other airport employees called the situation unmanageable and said frantic passengers were left crying in line.

Worry about those long lines had some people opting to fly non-peak hours on Saturday night.

“To hopefully avoid some of the congestion,” said Cara Gross, who was flying to Montana. “It’s still busier than we thought."

Airport employees are warning travelers to plan ahead.

“Your ticket may say get here three hours early, [but] I say get here five hours early,” said Valante Weems, an employee at Sea-Tac.

The shutdown continues as President Donald Trump and Congress are unable to reach an agreement.

The president doubled down on his demands for $5.6 billion to fund a border wall Saturday, tweeting:

"I don't care that most of the workers not getting paid are democrats, I want to stop the shutdown as soon as we are in agreement on strong border security!"

The American Federation of Government Employees is suing to force the federal government to pay them during the shutdown.

TSA said in a statement that it is “closely monitoring the situation.”

It acknowledged that call-outs started over the holiday season and have increased, but said they are causing minimal impact.

It said security and performance standards will not change, but wait times may be affected depending on the number of call outs.

Perry Cooper, spokesperson for Sea-Tac Airport, says the wait times for security clearances was never more than 25 minutes on Sunday. He says the standard recommendation for arriving to the airport remains unchanged. Passengers on domestic flights should arrive two hours early; international passengers should arrive three hours before their flights.

Making up lies about terrorists coming across the southern border can only make security against where the terrorists actually come from even less secure. This shut down which Trump claimed to be proud of only hurts actually securing our nation.

Heard earlier today that a bunch of border patrol agents are in the same boat... BUT There is a national emergency at the border!

AND LMAO, the 3700 terrorist linked immigrants caught by DHS has been sort of debunked today, 6 were caught at the border, SIX! The rest were caught at airports. So there goes that BS point.

Here's the most amusing part of their deception......

The disclosure, made by Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen Monday and first reported by NBC News, concerned only the first half of 2018. Of 41 people stopped at the U.S.-Mexico border by the CBP in that period, 35 were U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, with the other six classified as non-residents.

By contrast, the CBP encountered 91 people at the U.S.-Canada border whose names were on the federal list, with 41 of them non-U.S. citizens or residents, NBC said.

http://fortune.com/2019/01/07/4000-suspe...eports-customs/

The rest came by air. You know, where TSA agents are calling in sick and not getting paid. So it looks like this White House cares more about a southern border wall than actually dealing with where actual terrorists are coming from.

But Trump will get national TV time to lie some more tonight.

Trump is a political terrorist holding ordinary people hostage and harming families and children without a thought for political gain.

He has repeated this process in plain sight with family separations and the government shutdown.

WE DO NOT NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORIST.
