Off topic here, but Sunday, watching the games, all the graphics, camera angles, how they can transpose (is that the right word?) a camera angle, etc. I told my wife "I remember watching football when, before a commercial, the camera would have to swing to show the scoreboard so you could see the score."

Back on topic now.

To put the graphics up over live video is to superimpose them.

Yep I don't think anything will get done preventing the SB from happening. But it could be a mess. Imagine if the SB was CANCELLED awaiting for a judicial decision on this. The TV people would have a cow as they would have to return some heavy commercial money also delay some Ad Campaigns that start with the SB.

What a mess for the NFL right now just a thought and not a big deal, it could grow into a mess. Heck its Los Angelos, they don't deserve to be in the SB. They might as well open the door to the NFL benefits of having a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Team whose market engulfs 1.275,762 people, versus the Los Angelos Rams market of 18,790,000. The conspiracy theories will start. Was this a conspiracy to put the more attractive team into the Super Bowl economically.

North East best coast vs. Soutwest worst coast...lol laugh

If the NFL would hire competent refs, then this wouldn't be needed.

I hear the argument about the game being longer for reviews, I say hogwash. These replays can be reproduced instantly. If a clear view is attainable, show it to the ref on the field and it's done. Should only take a few seconds.

They add more and more TV breaks to the game, I can't see how something as relevant as getting a call right should be put aside for times sake.

This is what I mean. Two officials in a booth who look at the angles and make the call. It will take no longer than it does now. It is sad when the whole stadium can see the reviews over and over on the big screens, yet the field officials can't make a decision. It is about ego, plain and simple. Nobody likes to admit they are wrong.

If it goes to replay, it should be the booth officials making the call, not the field officials.

Yes - we can totally do without the needless spectacle of the referee trudging over to the on-field monitor to review the play under the dramatic black hood. It ends up taking 2-3 minutes. Instead, it should go like this:

Field ref announces "New Orleans is challenging the call on the field that there was no pass interference on the play."

30-45 seconds expire ...

Field ref announces "The call on the field has been reversed. New Orleans ball on the 5 yard line. First down."

The end.

They could also put 10 or 11 officials on the field.

The game moves so fast, and the players are so fast, that more officials are required to truly see what's going on.

Also, simplify the rules. That would also help a lot.

I think that's the wrong approach. At the end of the day the judge and jury reside on a couch with all the evidence they need coming from camera footage... 1000 fps camera footage. There aren't enough human eyes to overcome that threshold. If the game is going to be judged at 1000 fps it should be officiated at the same speed, at least with close and questionable calls.

Beyond that, you hit the nail on the head with the rules being complicated. The NFL "fixed" some of that this year by "uncomplicating" the catch rule. It would also help if the league would think things through before they change things. Somehow it became some mandate to blow the whistle as quick as possible, as if it would do something to curb injuries. Now we have all these dramatic changes in games due to plays being stopped before they're over. Nothing like the "competition committee" ruining the very spirit of competition.

I hear a lot of talking heads suggesting a green flag to challenge penalties (or lack thereof). Just give them three red flags and one (and only one) per game is strictly to challenge a penalty situation. I hope the league and it's officials can see past it's arrogance and will adopt this next season. This is the NFL, need to do away with outcomes that resemble 1980s WWF.

Catch rule is the stupidest thing in football. Should be like baseball - the ball hits the ground in any way, shape, or form - guess what - it is not a catch. These morons decided to add "the process of making a catch" and can still be a catch even if ball touches the ground - wrongo. Simply put, the ball hits the ground during the initial part of the catch - incomplete.

Next - what constitutes a football move after making a catch. Should be easy enough to determine if ball is caught and put away and possession is established. The NFL incompetents made this way more difficult than it should be.

Hammer, what frustrates me more than anything is what happens out of bounds.. If the Player has possession on the field of play..Then why in the heck does it matter if he drops it out of bounds...It's not playing the Field. It's like they have to stand there out of bounds holding the ball to be a catch...

I understand why there is no response. What's he going to say, "sorry, the refs took your superbowl away" ?

They need to use the technology at hand to assist the officiating. It is in place, and can be done quickly. Time to put egos aside and use the resources at hand.

Exactly. First, they take time to march to the middle of the field to tell us exactly what's being challenged, then slow march to the monitor while a lengthy TV commercial takes place....when the commercial's over he's still looking in the monitor. Then he stops and converses with the other officials before finally announcing the verdict. It's a damn circus.

In hockey, they just defer video review to officials at NHL headquarters and get the decision in 1/4th or less time than the NFL does.

Question, Was the Ram defender who got the NO CALL from the refs, did he get fined for his hit? So not only was it a pass interference that wasn't called but also an illegal hit with no flag thrown just so grevious that the player got fined???

I think he got fined 27,00.00

He is also the one talking smack on Tom Brady. Dude shouldn't even be in the superbowl, and he has the balls to diss Brady.

So he was fined...which means its as good as the NFL admitting that their Ref's suck. So much so that not only was the none call so bad for PI but it should have been a penalty for the hit itself. Just a testimony of Incompetence that kept a team out of the SB...OUT! If it wasn't so obvious I would go with the Fixed Game routine, but you got to be an idiot to be do so in a manor that has everybody wondering.

Helmet to helmet, could that have been reviewed?

As long as it's the Rams and Saints, I don't care if one of the teams got screwed, and I don't care if the missed the call either,

not really important that it has to be "fair", or if one team didn't get the ball in OT, because the other team scored a TD on the first poss.

As long as it's two teams which I don't care which one wins,

and I didn't,

then get whatever wrong calls they want.

The Saints had 60 minutes of game time, just like the Rams did,

Personally, I still don't think it was pass interference because he hit him with his elbows up and out first, no helmut to helmut
no shoulder pad to the chin
no below the waist break the guys knee with your helmut,

no, ditry play hold the guys arm extended at the elbow as you fall with him to the ground, with all your weight on top of his weight, in an attempt to break his wrist, arm or elbow.

And I feel I can't have it both ways, I mean for years I've said these spot foul pass interferences were stupid because they didn't make the offense actually have to make the catch.

so now,

One call goes the other way, and I'm going to be PO'd? NO!

I don't care about the saints, those Paper Bag wearing (weirdos) from thirty years ago, when their team couldn't win a game and they barely had one player to speak of, Craig Heyward.

I don't care about the Rams either, or the Pats, Bills, Ravens, Chiefs or whoever else was in the playoffs and got a bad call.

I care about the Browns getting a fair deal,

actually a more than fair deal, the playing field ought to be skewed, in favor, of the Browns,

because we all know that it already is for every team the Browns play against week to week, so just trying to even it out.

"Wasn't pass interference, I don't care if they got it wrong, tuff crick paddle"

we got screwed in the Kosar years,

where is the thread on the Super Bowl, that's what I was looking for.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Thought it to be very interesting at what Goodell stated about the Saints being screwed out of the SB enough so where he is saying we have to look at somehow improving the replay situation to make such an obvious bad call over ruled..or in this case NONE CALL over ruled.

Exactly... I get that the saints most likely win with that call... but they still had a chance o win a team the end of regulation if their defense holds... and they had a chance to win when they got the ball in overtime.... but they didn't...

Just a correction, A definite WIN not most likely 100% sure of the win as it was kneel down time for the game.

Onto the rest of your statement.

One has to consider the MENTAL effect that NONE CALL had on the players.
Saints: Knew the game was won and their opportunity of going to the SB was taken away not from play but from a BAD decision on the Referee's part...what hurts is More than one REF could have made the call. No matter what that could effect the mental aspect of the game. It could effect the STAMINA a player has which is important at the end of the game.

RAMS: Knew they just escaped from a 100% loss. Imagine the elation and on their end the Mental effects. Bringing on adrenaline to perform a little better at the end of the game, give them renewed stamina for the 4th and overtime. The elation of feeling blessed and instantly feel that their DESTINY is to Win. After all the none call was a MIRACLE situation. An obvious change of destiny.

So I don't care about the "EQUAL" opportunity after the game was OVER and then given back to the RAMS...was it "EQUAL"???

I think not - this game of football is so intense and so exhausting. It was not only an INSTANT change of fortunes, it was a gift that kept on giving.

I get it... the whmost or mental thing... I was a collegiate athlete so somewhat understand how hard it is to maintain mental focus especially in a situation like this....but they still had multiple chances to win the game.... there were time outs and break s to get yourself re set....

I agree they had a right to complain after te ame... but they also had multiple chances to still win and lost.... does it suck... absolutely.... but they have to own some of that...

That does not fit the scenario in New Orleans, at that particular point in the game.

IMO, that don't matter. That was the play they needed to win the game, no ifs ands or buts. They needed to get into position to kill the clock and kick the winner, and they accomplished that, but were denied due to a blatant no call. Justifying the Rams win by playing that game is bull. The Rams had chances to win before that point too. They got an unfair chance because of the mistake. Overtime should have never happened, so to me anything that happened after the bad call means nothing to me.

I agree Lamp. Because of that non-call I just can't get excited about the Superbowl. I feel the Saints got screwed and the Rams don't belong there. I doubt they will beat the Pats anyways. I feel the Saints would have a better chance. JMO

I just saw that play again,
NOW I'M SURE IT WAS NOT PASS INTERFERENCE!

I don't know what y'all are complaining about, because the defender, clearly didn't see the Wr,

THEY BUMPED IN TO EACH OTHER, .. THAT'S NOT PASS INTERFERENCE

Way I just saw it,
From that angle,
The angle from ground level looking up, from back, nearside corner of the end zone to my right or behind me,

I see two players watching the ball taking different angles toward the ball,
The DB sees the Wr at the end
Get's his hands up, elbows to chest to make proper (non helmut to helmut) (non shoulder to face)
2018 legal contact with the receiver

NOT PASS INTERFERENCE! No way, no how, ... Wow, I hadn't even remember SEEING this angle before

Can't believe everybody's up in arms, Knew I shoulda trusted my eyes, my first instinct.

I'm in the minority, always have to be the only sane person in a crazy world.

( If the stupid, preview show hadn't just showed a replay of that play, I wouldn't even care, I would have moved on)

Just like the Saints need to Move on! They, "aint" there.

I hope you're not talking about the play near the end of regulation in the Rams Saints game. If you are then I just don't know about your eyes, or maybe football knowledge.

Even the defender admitted it was pass interference. He didn't look for the ball at all. Not once. He also hit the receiver helmet to helmet. It was a penalty all the way around. The Commissioner admitted that it should have been a penalty. It actually should have been DPI and a personal foul for helmet to helmet. They could have also added a penalty for leading with the crown of the helmet. This play was as black and white as could possibly be.

I don't know what you watched, but it wasn't this play.

It's corruption or incompetence of the highest order. Whichever it is, it does not belong in a multi-billion dollar industry. This is a festering boil of putrid disease that can affect any game and any season. Owners who aren't concerned aren't paying attention. This must be addressed. The refs clearly are incapable of getting it right, for whatever reason, doesn't matter, the league has to take the power to determine the outcomes of games, seasons, and championships out of their hands. Period. End of story. Challenges and reviews across the board are the only answer. The league can no longer afford to ignore, deflect, or apologize for this egregious mismanagement.

There are 7 part time officials per game ..... many of whom are older men .... who are trying to watch and stay with players who can get up to 20 MPH, or more, all on their own.

The league should hire younger, full time officials, and add 1 or 2 on field officials to their onfield compliment for each game.

They could also be trained to not blow the whistle if the ball is possibly fumbled, even at the goalline.

I would add 1 coach's challenge to each half, and the 3rd one would be to challenge anything. If there is no infraction found on this particular challenge, the challenging team loses 5 yards. This challenge could be used at any point of the game.

Replay is supposed to help eliminate human error .... but too much human error is still found in this game. There have to be ways to help eliminate a lot of it.

While I don't necessarily disagree with having more (and younger) referees, a part of me thinks we should be careful what we wish for. We could end up seeing laundry fly on every play, and that would make the games unwatchable. We've already basically removed kickoff and punt returns from the game, by virtue of regulation and refereeing.

The easiest and most obvious fix for what happened in New Orleans is to make interference calls and non-calls reviewable. No additional review flags are necessary for the coaches, and booth reviews should be automatic in the final 2 minutes.

Agreed. I would think a Los Angeles- Boston Super Bowl would be more popular and a bigger ratings # than a New Orleans - Boston game. Just like Dodgers-Red Sox or Lakers-Celtics in their respective leagues. Just a little speculation on my part.

One other thing I would like to see is a general simplification of the rules.

Let any motion (outside the OL) take place before the snap. Do you want 4 men in motion, with them moving towards the LOS at the snap? Fire. Why cares? Make every player on the field an eligible receiver. Eliminate the worthless rules, such as the OT has to be covered up. What difference does that really make?

Simplify, simplify, simplify.

Make every player on the field an eligible receiver. Eliminate the worthless rules, such as the OT has to be covered up. What difference does that really make?

Simplify, simplify, simplify.

I totally agree, but it won't happen.

Every year they actually make the rules MORE complicated and MORE confusing.

They need reasonable doubt when a call is messed up. The camera coverage and 24 hour news cycle is too good at pointing out mistakes in the modern day to make the rules simple.

If they had simple rules and challenges for everything the games would be boring with the better team always just stomping the worse team. That's bad for ratings.
