Lately I have been reading in various articles that the Browns will be the favorites in the North next year.

How that conclusion was reached I have no idea. Especially since free agency and the draft has not yet happened.

The Browns have made huge gains in one year. There is no question about that but 7-8-1 was not good enough to win the division last year. Their division record of 3-2-1 was a big improvement from the past.

For me though I have to see the rosters after free agency and the draft to make that kind of statement.

The Steelers and Ravens are not going to stand still. Both teams are talented.

The Browns roster today will compete. But favorite to win the division?

We have a lot to look forward too. Baker, Chubb, Ward, Avery, Callaway, Landry, Randall, and others have made a huge impact.

At the same time we will have a new defensive coordinator. Last years defense needs to improve and questions remain on how that will happen.

The Offense will be in good shape and will get better.

Open for discussion.

We have young and talented players at key positions. Going into their second and third seasons, and even their fourth, they should get better. And not just better, but better TOGETHER.

How much better might Avery be in 2019? Callaway? Just a couple names to toss out there.

I'm not worried about the other North teams. We'll handle them ourselves.

You mentioned the draft and while it's obviously important, it's not as in important in 2019 - in other words - they'll be young fellas, pups, really - as it will be in the future.

Bake's playing a huge part in driving this train. If he keeps getting better... see my sig. wink

And with a new head coach, and new defensive coordinator,

it's possible everything works out, (mesh's)

but I see no reason to say "favorite" to win the division, at all.

All 3 other teams just have too much cohesion, experience, and continuity to make the Browns "faovrites".

Now they can DO IT, SURE! But "favorites" should take a little more evidence, even after the 2nd half of this year.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

We were 7-8-1 last year .. here’s some of the variables surronding this 7-8-1 team .....

- incredible dysfunction on the O side of the ball between the HC and OC ...mind boggling is the only way I can describe it the way its being told to us ... and theres absolutely no reason to doubt a word of what were being told ....

- rookie qb that got no first team reps with the 1’s in training camp or the pre-season takes over in week 3 ...

- the rook and the entire O had to put up with 5 more weeks of complete and utter ineptness and incompetence ...

- the D was simply bad ... very overrated unit by most on here ... BUT they played better under Blake and there is no denying theres some good young talented players on that side of the ball to work with ...

- the O came alive under Freddie and Bake .... CAME ALIVE ... it had some hiccups but are u kidding me ... come on bro ... what our O did in the red zone was EPIC .... simply EPIC ... not just cause it was done by a rookie ... im no stat guy ... but 20 for 20 in TD’s I believe .... how many times has that been done? ... is it frequently? .... i dunno ...

The faider game was taken from us ... and bone ... i wonder if we kept Kendricks if thats enough to get us the 2 w’s it would have taken to win this division last year ... one can only wonder ... or not ... it doesnt seem very productive to me ... *L* ...

Anyhow ... given our situation .. this team OVERACHIEVED IMO ... they like each other ... they like the coaches that are coming back ... the FO and the coaches are one ...

The entire org. Is rowing in the same direction .... the FO with the coaches .. the coaches with each other and the players ... the players have what we have been lacking for so so long .... TALENT!!!

We are the HOTTEST DESTINATION right now ... where else is hotter? ... we have enough cap room to get a difference maker and some quality depth ...

There’s a PLETHORA of reasons to believe we’re gonna be favorites to with the division ... yes, i agree .. we need to wait for FA and then the draft ... BUT for now ... theres no reason to think were not the best team in the north ... NONE AT ALL .... thumbsup

Do not discount the Bengals. Yes we beat them twice, with most of their offense injured. The Bengals with their offensive starters all playing are still formidable. All 4 North teams are close, do not count anyone out.

My thoughts on why we should be favorites...?

We finished ahead of Cincinnati who is also going thru a coaching transition as well as a potential rebuilding of their own. They're the bottom feeders.

The Steelers are a dysfunctional mess. They have a bunch of selfish superstars including Ben, Antonio, and Le'veon. One didn't want to play for them this year and one doesn't want to play for them next year. The third one is nearing the end of his career. The Steelers are changing and it's not for the better. They have nothing on the team that says they are ready for the future.

The Ravens have wrestled with the idea of changing head coaches only to decide to keep thei one they got. They have a quarterback who is a fumbling machine. And he likes to run the ball almost as much as he passes. When was the last time that worked out?

As for the Browns, we have a stud top 10 quarterback coming off his rookie campaign. We kept the architect of the second half offense as HC, an offense the NFL hasn't seen since Clinton was president. We have a stud defensive end. We have the best interior offensive line in the league who helped keep their quarterback off his back an absurd amount times down the stretch. We went from 2-6-1 to finishing the season 5-2. If we add a few more key pieces and improve the roster, how can we not be favored?

On top of all that, we are better on paper today than the other 3 teams in the division. As much as the other teams are going to improve thru free agency and the draft, we will as well. The Browns will always be the Browns or the Steelers will always be the Steelers is simply BS.

But I hope we aren't favored. Let the world give us more fuel.

I don't discount anybody, but we are trending up. The other are regressing or standing still.

I take that back, the Ravens also look to be trending up with better QB play.

I don't know if we are the favorites. It will be close. I do like the fact that people are thinking that we could be the favorites.

We tossed the deadweight at the top of the FO the year before and the coaching staff mid season, then we took off. That is a clear indication those guys were inept.

We'll see how it plays out.

I think any reports of us being the favorite have everything to do with Baker Mayfield, and his success. Having a solid o-line, solid running backs, and the right pieces on defense in key positions like DE, CB, S, help support the claim.

As Browns fans.. we know better. Especially saying so in January, where we are pre-draft and pre-free agency.

At the start of the season, you went on the Isle of Optimism campaign and said this year was going to be great because of all the talent. Now we "overachieved" at 7-8-1?

Ok.

I have no idea if we can win the AFC North but I think we have a shot because we have our QB. Once you have that, anything can happen, really. Some injuries may go in our favor for other teams, some calls in our direction, etc. But if don't have the guy, you never really have a shot.

We have a shot now.

We need some better tackling and some other improvements to win it IMO. Maybe wild card a reality. I would love to see it. If we put up points consistently, then it may happen. I am eager to see it!

I think that growing belief that puts the Browns as Division favorites isn't based on the Browns success alone.

IMO The Steelers fell out of favor not necessarily because of the dysfunction (that is said about them almost every year) but because it looks like there's an increasing chance they'll be losing Brown on top of Bell.

The Bengals while talented, are aging.

The Ravens I think were viewed as a one trick pony and there's too much doubt at this point what Lamar is really going to be/do.

So basically the other 3 teams appear to be trending down in various degrees whereas the Browns are the only ones who are clearly trending up.

Just like someone has to finish last, someone has to finish first.

BTW, these aren't my personal assessments of the teams, but just the impressions from what I've seen and heard.

Pittsburgh - Lets start there as they are the head of the beast and have been for as long as I can remember.

Right now, outside looking in, they are a dumpster fire. In two years, they will have lost their three best players (Shazier to injury, Bell to his scenario, and now Brown it seems) two of which are considered the 2 best in the NFL. They lost arguably the best RB in the league this last year, had a 3rd pick step in and put up pro bowl numbers - so the logical thing to do is fire your RB coach right? They have fired their LB coach, DB coach I believe last year, lost the best offensive line coach in the league to a LATERALL position move. Your best player is photo shopping himself into a 49ers jersey into pictures with Jerry Rice. I live in the area, and the fans and pundits are scared. Some are even calling to just blow it up and start over.

Baltimore - that defense is legit, except for when Baker plays them and lights them up. Lamar I believe is a great athlete, but teams are now learning how to stop him, and I feel he will be a flash in the plan unless he can learn how to throw a football from the pocket. You saw what we did to him the second half, and what the Chargers did to him in the playoffs. The tape is out. He needs to fundamentally change his game, or the struggles will continue.

Cincy - I actually think even with a coaching change, that they maybe primed to step up. They still have AJ Green who will be coming back healthy, Mixon is a pretty dang good back, and Andy Dalton might be a middle road Qb, but he can be tough to beat if hes on. I think think they are the biggest question mark in the division - to see if maybe they go in a different direction - or to see if they think it was simply Marvin holding them back.

The Browns - The future is so bright. But lets be honest, we didn't exactly beat great teams last year. We have improved, but we still need some top level talent. I am not sold on this WR corps. Baker made them look better than they are. We need a STUD. We have major hole on our Run D. We cannot stop the run, we need DL and LB. And a second CB may be in the cards as well.

Of course as you stated, there is an entire offseason of FA and a draft to see where these teams lean and where they try to go. So all this is as of today. I think as of today, we have the brightest future, but I am not certain we are there talent wise yet. Johnny boy Dorsey needs another offseason like last year to make that jump.

in terms of the Bengals, it will be interesting to see who starts at QB ... Driskell looked as good, if not better, than Dalton

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Steelers still have Ben, they still have Brown and Juju and won't have the distraction of Leveon Bell. As far as I know the Ravens haven't seen any of those highly productive veterans retire. I think we are, for the first time expecting to compete for the division but I would hardly think we are the favorite.

Id be a little more leery of the bengals if tannehill does become their starting QB.

I do think the bengals are in a bit of a rebuilding mode.

But im never worried about the bengals. Their owner doesn't care about winning a super bowl. I mean they haven't won a playoff game longer than us and we were gone for 3 years.

His cap hit is like 20m a year. No one is trading for that and if they do, it won’t be good for the Steelers because it will be a nothing round pick. Historically the Steelers don’t hurt themselves, they aren’t the Browns.

$22,165,000 to be exact.

The next three seasons, in fact, Brown will take up roughly $20M in cap space. Only in 2021 can they cut ties and only have dead cap set at $7M

In my estimation he has also lost a step. He is still elite, but he lost a step and will be 31 by the start of next season. No one is taking that contract unless it's basically for free.

Tannehill is Dalton. They’re the same... lots of stats...without enough wins in big games. They’re both fools gold. They’re the types of QBs that waste the talent of those around them. AJ Green will put up huge career numbers but won’t see a divisional championship because of Dalton.
Now, as far as possible dealings, put Nick Foles on that same Cinci team... that’d suck to have to deal with. That guy wins the right kinds of games. Tannehill and Dalton are never going to get their respective teams past the hump. It’s not in their make up.

The Steelers aren't just Ben, Bell, and Brown. Ward, Dupree, Schuster, Conner, Heyward, and others are there too. They still have one of the league's best OLines. Just like our 2nd-3rd year players are improving, theirs are too. Just like we will have FA and Draft additions, they will too. Same with the other teams.

No doubt we are a better team than the start of 2018, and we have shown that we are back in the conversation. But we also have a new HC and coaching staff. They all look good on paper, but how do they work together? How will the new order translate into execution of game plan?

I love that we are no longer the doormat of the AFCN, but anointing the Browns as the favorite to win the division feels like being set up for disappointment. Lets see how the totality of the changes settle out before reaching for a crown.

I cannot disagree. But I think you can have some success with either of them if you do it right. One or both could be the next Alex Smith or Kirk Cousins and get that large payday because someone is desperate for a quarterback. Won't get you over the hump, but will make you relevant.

Imho, if the season started today, it's a 3 teams fighting with the Bengals playing catch up.

The only reason I say that and not browns are the favorite is because we haven't done it and the others have. This is an incredibly young team.

We have another draft and free agency haul that is close to last year and we are the favorite to e the next dynasty. Last year's haul was that damn good.

I also see special in Freddie. I see a ton of talent that is on the edge of becoming Special. Garrett, Baker, Ward, Chubb, Bitonio, Randall, Ogunjobi are guys that be in the argument for top 5 at their position in years to come.

Then you have the guys like Peppers, Njoku, LAndry, Callaway, Mitchell, Avery and others that are guys u win with and all these guys should be much better next year.

This is the first time I can remember. Where there isn't some kind of conflict or power struggle in coaching or front office.

We host playoff games next year if a couple thing go our way.

I'm not buying it. We'll be a strong 2nd at best. Until they prove me wrong I'll stick with that. It's a tough division. Until the Browns can beat the Ravens twice in a year, well, we'll always be also-rans.

That being said I'm far more optimistic than I've been in years.

I'll hold off on predictions until we see player movement and acquisition, but I have to think we'll be competitive

The failures of the Browns since 1999 are in direct correlation to the GM's we have had more so than the head coaches.

I don't care what others say.

I disagree. We've had terrible HC (or at minimum not prepared) in the form of Crennel, Mangini, Shurmur, Pettine, Chudzinski, and the great Hue Jackson. I mean this list alone is absolutely disgusting. Now the main issue for all of the GM of the past was not being able to find a franchise QB, but talent was able to be acquired with many past GMs. The issue has been for both coaches and GMs, the constant turnover and restarting of plans based on what they wanted to accomplish and the discord usually between the two roles.

Dorsey has changed this team. His success is why Haslam has backed off. It is why Haslam let Dorsey hire the head coach.

Without Dorsey the Browns would not be where they are as a team.

I agree to a degree. Dorsey has gone a great job selecting players for this team, particularly where it comes to the draft. He has made some great decisions in that regard. Taking Mayfield when most people didn't like him and lazily compared him to Manziel, choosing Ward over Bradley Chubb (although perhaps the jury is still out on this one as both played well and Ward had 2 concussions on one season), and taking Nick Chubb as he has become one of the best RBs in the draft. However, Dorsey would not have been in his draft position unless it was from the decisions of the last regime. Without those moves, here is the Dorsey draft:

Rd 1- Baker Mayfield
Rd 2. Austin Corbett
Rd 3- (Traded for Tyrod Taylor)
Rd 4- (Traded w/ another pick from the last regime for Damarious Randall)
Rd 5- Genard Avery
Rd 6- Damion Ratley
Rd 7- ( I believe was used in a trade to get a late round pick this draft)

(I might very well be mixing picks up as was looking at all the deals made online)

You don't have Jarvis Landry (for all of the Landry truthers), Ward, Chubb, Calloway, Thomas, etc. They aren't on the team. But maybe if the situation was different and we didn't have the voluminous amount of picks that we did at the time, perhaps trades for Landry, Taylor, or Randall might not have happened due to scarcer draft resources. Now, with all that said, I think a legitimate argument could be made that the above draft can be considered a wild success if ONLY due to the fact that we're pretty sure we got our franchise QB. Something that all drafts have missed on in Cleveland since 1999. That, in itself, should warrant it a success.

My point is, this draft was set up beautifully for anyone that was going to run it. But, of course, the GM needed to hit on the picks. And so far, I think we can all agree that Dorsey hit on more picks than not and did a great job. But make no mistake, Dorsey got help in order to make the 2018 draft successful. There is zero doubt about that in my mind.

This was my first reponse to you. If you think this is "attacking", then we have very different definitions of the term. I literally said I agreed with you on some stuff and showed you where I didn't.

That's not attacking, that's called, at most, embarking upon a debate. Or simply providing an opinion.

Back to the thread, part 2.......
