Could this be a recruitment ploy? Can you Dawgs imagine?
Baker Mayfield goes to dinner with Von Miller, Odell Beckham Jr. ByJOSH EDWARDS Jan 28, 5:30 PM
The Cleveland Browns have been linked to the New York Giants and star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. for quite some time. The conversation is not going to end any time soon after a recent night out with quarterback Baker Mayfield and his fiancee, Emily Wilkinson. Denver Broncos star pass rusher Von Miller was also at the dinner.
Realistically speaking, there is no reason to believe that the dinner should have any bearing on whether or not Miller or Beckham join the team in the future. Miller has a past with Browns defensive end Myles Garrett because they both played at Texas A&M. Last off-season, Browns quarterback Tyrod Taylor set up a throwing session with his skill position players in California. Beckham was there as well.
He is a close friend and former teammate of Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry. The wide receivers played together at LSU. Landry publicly advocated for the team to trade for Beckham last off-season when trade rumors were swirling. Cleveland also hired former Giants and LSU wide receivers coach Adam Henry. He was one of the few coaches retained on head coach Freddie Kitchens' first coaching staff.
Beckham trade rumors will likely re-surface again this off-season. As of now, it does not seem like there is any realistic chance of a trade involving Beckham.

That's all well and good, but what would be the cost of either one? Neither is a FA, so we are talking trade.
Granted, our 1st round pick next year (and likely the following years) are not as valuable as the ones in the past (top 3).
I don't think a 1st will get OBJ and I am positive it won't get Miller, given what the Bears traded for Mack.

Didn't both OBJ and Miller just sign long term deals?
To say we wouldn't want them would be crazy, they are amazing players. But to think it's even close to realistic, at this point? Nope.. Don't see it.

Again promoting how special Baker is - I've never seen the respect by STAR Players given to a rookie like I have seen Baker, just the hugs and way he is treated by some really great players. Just cannot remember a Rookie getting that kind of respect.
I'm telling you we are entering a new era for the Browns, Players are wanting to come here. We are the team these guys now think they can win a Championship with.
Shame we are talking about having to trade rather than FA stuff. Trade you lose a draft pick but also must carry an over priced contract.
Can't wait for private workouts and who comes to Baker's workouts.
I don't think either is in our future. Possibly Miller, OBJ, just seems too expensive for a WR.

Mayfield is contagious. Being associated with him may signify "Winner". At least I'm thinking how nice having that word associated with anything Browns related sounds...Times are definitely changing though.

Sure you would love to add that kind of talent.
However, I don't see Dorsey doing what it would take and I understand that.
There is and will always be a balancing act between contracts and money.
When you look at the draft you have to determine if the players there and the money you would spend for them equates to what you would have to spend for these players.
Cooper to the Cowboys looks worth it. It other cases like Mack maybe that works as well. But it is case by case basis.
OBJ on the Browns kind of makes you drool from a talent perspective but in the big picture?
Miller? I don't see that either.
We have 11 draft picks. I would rather move up with those picks as collateral and take shots at higher picks in the draft.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

if we get OBJ, im calling superbowl appearance, straight up.
and i'd even go as far to call Baker an early MVP candidate.

I was one of the people that said, "uh, no..." when trade rumors were swirling last offseason. Now that we seem to have the QB position under control, I think we can start think about these bigtime moves. Personalities like OBJ can work as long as the offense has some hope of clicking... and that only happens when you have a productive QB. I haven't seen enough of Mayfield to give Dorsey the go ahead to go nuts and make the trades that would be needed to get the likes of OBJ, but I'm getting there.

We don't have any players in OBJ's league that I would want to part with and.. perhaps I'm glorifying Dorsey's very successful draft last year, but I'm not sure I'd want to part with they kind of draft picks they would want either.

I was thinking about it tonight. I'd be willing to part with our number 17 for OBJ.
It'd give Baker an awesome weapon. He'd get his old WR Coach back. Get to play with his buddy Jarvis again.
And since we should be re-signing Baker for like another 3 years or so, we could afford OBJ's Contract.
If it doesn't work out, in 2021 and 2022, it's easier to cut him to make room for Garrett, Ward's and Mayfield's big contracts that they'll be getting.
I dunno if i'd do more than that, but i'd be satisfied with trading the 17 for Beckham.

I could get with that line of reasoning. Or at least, I can certainly understand your POV. All the things you mention could end up being really great positives.
I know that OBJ is an extremely sexy topic, given the prospect of BM throwing him the ball.
On the other hand, I'd be just as interested in the prospect of Von Miller playing opposite Myles Garrett:
Game plan: "Hey, Myles & Von: Party's in the backfield. Meet at the QB..." This prospect also has me licking my chops.
So- how much would 'Dawgs as GM' pay to see something like that happen this offseason?
Just speaking for myself, if the choice is to land one (and ONLY one) of those dinner guests, I lean more toward VM. Why?
Seems to me that Baker broke the rookie TD record without OBJ, but our D ranked in the 20's in a major metrics. Keep working that Baker/WR chemistry from last season, and upgrade the D:
1. pitch more 3/outs. 2. sack/pressure opposing QB's. Keep them skittish and off their games. 3. force passing turnovers with relentless pressure
All 3 of these give Baker more opportunities. Even without OBJ.
I kinda like that scenario, as well.
