Well, when you call out the left as well as the right, it's much harder to make friends. If anyone can understand this, it's me.

He made the joke saying Trump pardoned a bucket of fried chicken for black history month... He was slamming Trump's racism and inept leadership. Not that the joke was in good taste, but that's the context.

I'm not a comrade of either side. It's true that Trump is a vile, nasty human being unworthy of the presidency, but that's just common sense. Not taking a side. You had candidates you could have had my support. But you chose to elect a scum bag.

I'm not sure. I guess I just don't find Maher funny. His jokes about Republicans were played out 2 decades ago. His jokes about leftists aren't funny either. I just think the guy is a centrist moron happy to scrutinize and cash a check. He's a useful idiot imo and not because he's in the "center" or anything like that. Quite frankly I don't see the comparison between you and Maher. I think anyone with an IQ that's above their age on this forum, know that you're a respectable member of this community.

I find him hilarious. To me the press gives politicians a pass. And that goes for both sides. I think he calls them on the carpet in a very funny way. I don't always agree with him but I take it for what it's worth.

Pit gets it. He's a good dude and smart enough to have fact based positions. We don't always agree but he is one of the good guys. So what you think you saw, you didn't. (Just like Trump says about collusion and you eat it up.)

He's a Clinton era establishment dem. I like watching his show but can't even tell you how many times I disagree with his BS views on the left. He attacked Bernie every chance he got in 2016 and since. He loses his mind over real progressives... BUT AOC has a lot of them coming around to progressive ideas for now. We'll see if the trend holds up once the billionaire money on the left starts to dry up.

I doubt there are many posters over 60-70-80, so this is a very low bar. IQs under 65 are considered incompetent and unable to make their own decisions. I'm not sure that is a law or what but Ohio HHS uses that to determine eligibility for certain assistance.

maher is a comedian and quipped a stupid joke about the back ally’s where this guy said he was working at 4am. And that was where the whole point was lost.

Hurd is a liberal in a GOP suit. BM was asking him why he’s a Republican. Fair question, and Hurd side stepped it and Maher joked about it, which he does to everyone who side steps his questions. IMO Hurd has some great ideas and it isn’t about a stupid wall. I respect him.

It says they are covering the week's news.. doesn't say anything about comedy other than he considers himself a comedian.. just because somebody, at some point, was a comedian.. does not give them free license to say whatever they want, for as long as they want, in whatever venue they want...

If these shows are going to continue to blur the lines between news and comedy.. then it only seems fitting to me that they be held to the higher standard, which is the standard applied to somebody talking about news.

If he wants to do a stand-up routine or a comedy central special, he can say whatever idiotic things he wants and I won't care.. but if you are interviewing a congressman about hot political issues of the day, you cease to be a comedian as far as I'm concerned.

If you don't grasp the comedy, it's not my fault. Many people don't even hold our elected officials to this kind of scrutiny.

Have you ever watched the show? I have. Its a talk show. Its not a news program. They have a panel of guest and talk about current events. Its heavily slanted to the left, although they do try to get right leaning viewpoint or two on the show each week.

Mahar isnt trying to be a comedian - he is a political comedian. He tours constantly and has stand up specials.

But the key difference you are missing is they are not REPORTING the news, they are DISCUSSING the news. He also then includes satire segments that poke fun at different topics and pictures, etc.

Mahar, for as much as I disagree with him on subjects, at least has the stones to take a stance for he believes. He doesn't back down, even when he spares with the left (and he does quite often). He is constantly calling them out for PC speech, stifling free speech, and has been on record of going at Islamic groups and saying the left needs to wake up about Islamic terrorism. He gets attacked by the left and right - and yet he still stands his ground, I give him that.

If Bill Maher we not incessantly bagging on the right, this would be a much bigger story. His casual racism gets a pass because he’s an ally.

Anecdotally the Cobert show was on because it must have been after the Superbowl. He told maybe 2 jokes before he went political for a full 5 minutes. You're right Maher and Colbert are not politicians, but they are far from being just your run of the mill comedians. They are every bit political activists as they are comedians.

When there's so much there to laugh at, what comedian could pass it up?

Don't disagree with that, but if you're going to wade into the swap, he can't be all butthurt when jokes aren't funny.

Oh but they are. He's hilarious and has been on the air since 2003. Comedy is subjective and not everyone has the same taste in comedy. But he's been popular enough, and enough people find him funny and entertaining that he's managed to stay on the air for 18 years and counting.

Politics is the low hanging fruit of comedy. It's daily, it's newsworthy, there is always material. I agree with Maher on a lot of things and even when I do he is only occasionally funny. I find it hard to imagine that the majority of his audience is there for the comedy and not the political discussion.
