Two leading Democratic presidential candidates -- U.S. Sens. Kamala Harris of California and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts -- have reportedly said they support reparations for black Americans affected by slavery, reflecting a shift in the importance of race and identity issues within the party.

The New York Times reported Thursday that Harris doubled down on her support for reparations after agreeing with a host on the popular radio show “The Breakfast Club” that the race-conscious policy was necessary to address the legacies of slavery and discrimination in the United States.

"We have to be honest that people in this country do not start from the same place or have access to the same opportunities," Harris said in the statement to the Times. "I’m serious about taking an approach that would change policies and structures and make real investments in black communities."

Warren also supports reparations.

Julian Castro, another Democrat running for president, has indicated that he would support reparations.

Fox News reached out to all three campaigns but did not immediately hear back late Thursday.

Reparations would involve the federal government’s acknowledgment of the ongoing legacy of slavery and discrimination and providing payment to those affected. Policy experts say it could cost several trillion dollars.

Scholars estimate that black families earn just over $57 for every $100 earned by white families, according to the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey.

U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., who is also running for president, has proposed helping poor children by giving them government-funded savings accounts that could hold up to $50,000 for the lowest income brackets, the Times reported. U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., supports a plan to allow Americans without checking accounts bank at their local post office.

Other prominent Democrats have stopped short of backing reparations, including U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who dismissed the idea in 2016. Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama have also expressed reservations.

Supporting reparations could come with much political risk. Republicans have long attempted to paint Democrats who support policies aimed at correcting racial inequalities as anti-white, according to the Times, and polling shows reparations for black Americans remains unpopular.

Yep. I hope the government finally follows through on a Republican promise. The withdrawal of Americans from the South during Reconstruction allowed the most vile and horrifying things to happen down there. Some people even still show their battle flags down in that part of the US.

These are meaningful platitudes. They would either have to A) target whites only or B) unfairly take it out of everyone's taxes regardless of color which I am certain that Asians, Indians Mexicans etc. would just love. Not to mention first generation white immigrants.

Reparations is a loaded word IMHO. Blacks and Native Americans were both wronged greatly in our history. However I agree that those directly affected by the actuals horrors and terrorism experienced are all dead and gone now, generations removed.

Their descendants have also experienced hate and less opportunity than their white counterparts. BUT, white americans were also discriminated against for a variety of reasons such as country of origin, religion, economic status, etc. at various times throughout our history.

So even though there may not be an equal comparison of pain and suffering, there is certainly a history of inequality and class hierarchy warfare common among many Americans regardless of race.

That said, I think the best 'reparations' are those programs that truly level the playing field for all. Healthcare, Housing, Education, and other basic human needs in modern society should be equally available to all rather we need to financially subsidize or straight up provide the basics. No child or person should go hungry, homeless, uneducated, or lack the ability via limited opportunity to reach their maximum potential to contribute to society and live a meaningful life.

Picking one group or the other for special consideration based on any historical wrongs actually creates another modern injustice to those not in the prefered/selected group. We should strive to give all people a level playing field and rid ourselves of the bigoted labels that divide us by race, religion, or sex.

All people are not equal. Some have higher IQs, some have medical/physical/mental limitations while others have advantages that may make them better suited for certain careers... none of those natural inequalities should be a reason or excuse to create limitations of opportunity based on economics, race, religion, geography, or other man made inequalities.

I personally think wealth inequality is the biggest driver in this debate. How much wealth is to much wealth? Once a person has more money than they and their family will ever personally use, further accumulation is pure greed only depriving others of opportunity. The power and greed behind vast wealth rather human or business entity is what needs to end to level much of the playing field.

Rewarding hard work, effort, and accomplishment is not a bad thing; allowing vast wealth to deprive others of the opportunity to excel is pure evil.

My family got here in 1848 and settled in Dayton, OH. They never owned slaves, and fought for the north. I should be exempt.

I really don't mind seeing a portion of my taxes go toward helping the underprivileged, so I don't consider it extortion at all. And I really don't mind the gubmint deciding who gets it... saves me the hassle of caring about the details.

Besides, when I'm gone, it won't matter how much I made or where it went. If some of mine helps others, so much the better.
