So Friday and Saturday will be the day for WR testing. Time for the men to separate themselves from the boys. It'll be interesting to see how Deebo, Riley and Parris run. I can't wait to see their 3 cone drills. The big guys at WR will have to prove they can separate too. N'Keal, DK, Hakeem, Lil'Jordan. It'll be a fun weekend watching them. Looks like edge rusher will be a day behind them. Again, it'll be a fun weekend.

For some reason, I enjoy watching the WRs most of all. Maybe because their drills seem to be closest to RL. I wish they'd put CBs on them though. That would be fun.

The combine from point my of view is an extended physical.

It puts everyone together to let doctors look at physicals. Teams get to meet players. They get to measure them.

No football is played.

You get to see them do some things that measure certain abilities.

As far a draft criterion it carries the least weight.

Film, private work outs, and interviews tell way more than the combine.

Something like 52 days after the combine, the NFL draft begins on April 25th.

In some respects, there is little down time for the coaches and front office...it seems that it is football season all year long for Browns.

You are 100% spot on - which is why it astounds me that every year players shoot up the boards because of their performance at the combine. It happens every year, and I honestly don't remember a player who shot up the boards coz of the combines and then went on to live up to their elevated draft position. smh

When you watch the NFL combine workouts this week, keep this chart handy. These are my target test results for each position and event.

Pretty much like that for all teams.

This time of year they might not be going 7 days a week like they do once camp opens through seasons end. The probably take a day off each week and probably don't put in 14 hour days, but it is still a grind.

June is usually the month where the coaching staff can actually take 2-3 weeks of downtime, then the 11 month grind begins anew.

How about 7 on 7 backyard playground football. Scratch it in the dirt and run the thing. That would be fun to watch.

So you're advocating Tim Couch comes out of retirement?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

It'd be better if it was Holcomb.

Holcomb lacks the experience of calling up plays in the dirt.

j/c:

I am obviously in the minority on this one, but the most boring event at the Combine is the 40 yard dash and they show each and every player.

I would rather go "Wow" after I see the times instead of having to sit through guys running. I like the cone drills, the DB drills where they have to change direction and go after the ball, some of the bag drills, the highlights of the guys while in college, and the WR drills.

j/c ... not diggin the injuries ... 21 games played in 3 years ... OUCH!!!

D.K. METCALF
WR, COLLEGE PLAYER

Ole Miss WR D.K. Metcalf measured in at 6-foot-3, 228 pounds at the Combine. That's with 1.6 percent body fat. Metcalf has become something of a social media sensation because of his truly absurd physique. Metcalf was eye popping on a per-play basis in the SEC but was limited to 21 games in three years thanks to injury. That includes a 2018 neck operation. Part of the Metcalf NFL dynasty, Metcalf is a truly absurd athlete who could hear his name called on Day 1 despite his injury concerns.

#Browns GM John Dorsey said this morning left tackle "would definitely be" among positions Cleveland looks at despite recently signing Greg Robinson to a 1-year contract extension. And Washington State LT Andre Dillard said he's had a formal meeting with the Browns at #NFLCombine

I remember one of Courtney Brown's teammates or someone affiliated w/the Browns saying they thought Courtney was too muscled for football. It wasn't an insult, but it was something like all those tightly wound muscles were more prone to tears.

I have no idea if that is true or not, but it makes sense on some level. I compare it to a high-priced performance automobile. They are fast and handle well, but seem to be in the shop a lot.

I am beginning to think that is the route we are going to take.

We have a QB we need to protect.

We just signed a LT to a 1 year deal. Is it a show me deal, or a bridge to the rookie we might draft?

I don't know anything about Dillard, but know Williams of Bama and Taylor of Florida are both worthy of our pick at 17. If Dillard is, one of those guys will be there at 17.

One guy who comes to mind is Brady Quinn, who I always thought lifted weights to the point where he couldn't throw anymore. Its not quite so simple as saying that muscle mass is inversely proportional to athleticism, but it seems to be a factor to a certain extent. I was always a baseball guy, and I observed that the best baseball players looked more like swimmers than weightlifters (not counting the steroid era). Strength is important in football, but so is fluidity and athleticism - especially at the skill positions.

Good examples by you and Dave.

Heck, back in the dark ages, I had an issue because I played football, basketball, and baseball. My football coaches wanted me to be muscular. My basketball coaches wanted me to light weights w/a lot of reps to have long muscles. The theory is that bulk would hurt your jumper. I pitched and played SS in baseball and bulk was frowned upon.

Boxing is another good example. Bulky guys throw shorter punches and are slower.

I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I always thought guys w/long, wiry muscles were stronger than weight lifters.

I works in all sports except weightlifting.

You have to find a balance between muscle mass/ strength, and range of mobility.

Golf is a game where mobility and range of motion is critical. It's why most of us old folks can't play as well anymore. It's also why with the young guys you don't see many guys with major muscles playing the game. There is a balance between strength and quickness, and fluidity.

You have to get to the ball the same way every time, and big guys with muscles generally can't do it.

Muscling up didn’t seem to do Woods many favors. Seems like the more he grew, the less he didn’t.
