But I think we can both agree that the word reparations brings a negative connotation which will only bring resistance from a large part of society.
We can, but probably not for the same (perceived) reason. In my experience the negativity attached to the word is rooted in the very same things that gave us Jim Crow in the first place. It's now a 'loaded' term because of a 100-year propaganda campaign that loaded it up. I doubt most of society will look past to see what you're really saying beyond that. That's been the problem all along... even when we had longer attention spans. Reference my thoughts two posts earlier. That's why I said it will be difficult. Real change requires effort and sincere commitment. It is painful for those who are resistant or feel that they will lose something if someone else gains something. And also- we're just plain lazy. .02

So you don't feel using some different term that doesn't have a history of negative connotation would help some at least look at the reals problems?
My feelings are that if you know something is going to put up a barrier to so many from the onset, the best plan of action is to try a plan that may be less difficult.
My dad taught me something long ago that I've found very useful throughout my life. He told me, "Son, it's not what you say, but how you say it."

j/c Let me show you the kind of thing that's still happening in our nation and this one isn't that far away from me....... Tennessee school apologizes for asking students to pretend to own slaves A Tennessee school district has issued an apology for a social studies assignment that asked students to pretend to be slave-owners and brainstorm expectations for their slaves. The Tennessean reported Thursday that Williamson County Schools and Sunset Middle School apologized for the assignment, saying it was inappropriate. A man whose 13-year-old sister was given the assignment posted it to Twitter. "It initially made me angry," Dan Fountain told the newspaper. "The fact that my sister is one of a couple of black kids at her school, I can't let things like this sit around and slide." The assignment also included other tasks such as the creation of a political cartoon depicting immigrant labor in the U.S. and writing a public service announcement about the hazards of living in urban areas. The two teachers who assigned the homework also apologized, saying in a statement that the assignment has been pulled and won't be graded. "We have and will be apologizing to our students," teachers Kim Best and Susan Hooper said in the statement, according to the Tennessean. "It was never our intention to hurt any of our students." Williamson County Schools Superintendent Mike Looney also apologized. "The assignment was wholly inappropriate and doesn't reflect our district's commitment to treat all students with dignity and respect," Looney said in a statement he posted to Twitter. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/slavery-hom...N1ab3OIAgnX89Do

No, I don't. If I change the term to, say- Pitsabulldog, some clever obstructionist will simply say "Pitsabulldog = Reparations"... and we're right back to Square One. This will only get fixed via the passage of time and a shift in societal standards. That takes GENERATIONS. At present, America lacks the political will to remedy 400 years of "tradition." And that's why I say that it will be difficult and painful. The problem isn't language. Language has been used to avoid/extend the problem. This change is required in the hearts, minds and ideologies og Good Americans everywhere.

We simply disagree on the phrasing. You certainly will have those on the extreme that will try to twist it no matter what you call it. But there are a lot of people who see the word reparations as cash. They'll never get past that word.
You'll never get anyone to see your point if they never look at it.

I'll be interested to hear what term you would employ. Because for me it's not the words- it's the attitude.

I'm not a word master. What I do know to be true is that if you start out by saying something that so many have a negative opinion of, they're not going to listen past that.
There are so many people willing to listen to new ideas that simply won't look past what they see as an old one.

The idea of reparations is silly. Slavery existed world wide and happened to all races all across the world. The US actually had far fewer slaves than most of the rest of the world. So to think that only the USA needs to make up for it is a little stupid. I mean will you go back to Africa and demand that your ancestors who sold you after capturing your ancestors through war and violence give you reprerations too?
Are you sad that your an American? Ok. Then let's do this for reparations. Any African American who wishes to immigrate back to their ancestors home country, if it still exists, we offer free plane tickets and $50,000 to start a new life back in Africa. The only catch is that you have to renounce your US citizenship for life.
If your happy to stay an American ... then just be thankful that your in the country most people in the world desire to live in because of the sacrifices of your ancestors. Reward those ancestors by being the best you can be so their sacrifices were not in vain because your success is the only true reparations that can ever be made to them because all parents suffer so that their children, grandchildren, etc can grow up to have a better life than they did.
Meanwhile lets focus on treating all humans as humans and creating equality for all because we still have a long way to go.

I think everything possible should be done to level the playing field for all Americans. You can label that as anything you like. I think that's really all anyone is advocating here.

I think there in lies the rub... My ideas aren't really new. they are the same solutions we've always known to be necessary, but have never had the political will to carry out.
The answers have been here all along. The 'fight' you imagine is not due to terminology... it exists because people still refuse to do what is right and just.

I'm fine with leveling the playing field for ALL americans and not have it done for the sake or race. That is why I strong view that all education should be free for anyone who is willing to learn. Want foodstamps? Then go to class and better yourself or go to trade school and gain skills that get you work. I would rather have a nation of scholars than welfare recipients. It cheaper than paying 40,000 a year to keep them in prison when they run out of options that is for sure.

MLK tried exactly what you wanted with economic justice for all. He was then swiftly assasinated.

MLK tried exactly what you wanted with economic justice for all. He was then swiftly assasinated. He was a great man. I am not looking for equality for all but just a fair stepping stone to the path of life so everyone can at least have a chance to try pursuing what makes them happy. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness is the core of my philosophy in life. We need to be alive and free to chase after the things that bring us happiness. I don't believe happiness can be handed to you but I do think people should have a fair chance to pursue it, so long as, they are not hurting others to do it.
