That works with boxing too. The really muscled up guys just seem to burn out quick in boxing.
Thomas Hearns comes to mind. Long, lean, cobra-quick, and he had the punching power of a mule. Not a great chin, but still one of the best in my lifetime. (Sugar Ray Robinson was before my time.)
One guy who comes to mind is Brady Quinn, who I always thought lifted weights to the point where he couldn't throw anymore. Its not quite so simple as saying that muscle mass is inversely proportional to athleticism, but it seems to be a factor to a certain extent. I was always a baseball guy, and I observed that the best baseball players looked more like swimmers than weightlifters (not counting the steroid era). Strength is important in football, but so is fluidity and athleticism - especially at the skill positions.
Because true strength comes from tendon strength(which takes many years to develop) and muscle strength(which you can develop in a relatively short time frame)
Guys who add on tons of bulk have added much muscle strength but their tendon strength has not had the years to develop.
How many of us have known thay little skinny old farm boy who is is a narrow as a bean pole , but is strong as an ox? Because over years and years of working he has developed tendon strength
You may be in the drivers seat but God is holding the map. #GMSTRONG
I'm particularly interested to see what Andy Isabella times in the 40. If it's anywhere near his reported 4.26 hand time, he'll make some $'s. That would blow the top of any defense.
I am obviously in the minority on this one, but the most boring event at the Combine is the 40 yard dash and they show each and every player.
I would rather go "Wow" after I see the times instead of having to sit through guys running. I like the cone drills, the DB drills where they have to change direction and go after the ball, some of the bag drills, the highlights of the guys while in college, and the WR drills.
NFL Network has made it so...as they hi-light the 40 with Rich Eisen running every year in his suit.
I can't wait for the day they do it with them in a standing position (football ready position, like a basestealer in baseball) With shoulder pads and helmet on. They can still be in shorts.
That is when I would be a lot more interested in it. I usually just wait for the posted times on each player.
Sometimes I like watching the OL drills. But I've said for years the only position that you can really judge from the shorts is CB and WR...basically they play like they would in a game. not much contact at all so no need for the pads and helmet I guess.

John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
John 3:16 Jesus said "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
The WR I think will be a star in the NFL is Terry McClaurin and we may get him as low as the 4th rd. although his stock rose a lot after the senior bowl ... JMHO

So Noah Fant ran a 4.5 and had a 6.8 three cone drill, and I suddenly think that drafting a TE with our first round pick wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
I missed Hakeem Butler when they were running the WR drills. How did he look? For some strange reason I did catch a couple glimpses of Lil Jordan Humphrey and did not think he looked too bad. Although he is on the slower side and I only saw one or two drills.
Just watching some of the drills today.. Gauntlet drill and Steve Smith went down to one of the QB rookie prospects, and told him to stop throwing the ball so hard... lmao.. Steve Smith gives no darns.
Andy Isabella...4.31 40. Why aren't you Ohio guys higher on him?
He ran a 4:56 and 4:45
His official times came back much faster.
Fake news ... Offical times are never that different
4.27?
4.27???
4.27 ???????

I thought it was hilarious when Smith went to the qb and said you are costing these guys money. Dude was throwing as hard as he could on a gauntlet drill.
Paris Campbell looked awesome today. He had a very fast time and looked great in the drills. He stayed right on the line in the Gauntlet drill, made sharp cuts in his routes, tracked the ball well, and caught the ball w/his hands. Very impressive. I was actually surprised.
Butler's 40 was better than I thought it would be. That kinda sucks for us because I was hoping he would fall in the draft. He might move up now. Butler did look bad tracking the deep pass right over his head. LOL...that was ugly.
The TE from LSU impressed me. The second Iowa TE who ran real fast had some poor routes and shaky hands.
Lil Jordan had two slow 40 times, but his hands looked very good and his footwork was surprising good considering his size.
I also like the WR from Arizona or Arizona State. His time was better than expected and he is one of those guys that does a lot of things right. He might end up being really, really good.
I think there is some talent in this group. Maybe not the all-around elite types, but guys that will help teams. There are so many of them and there are also so many very good defensive players that I think we should be able to get a WR in rounds 2-4 that might help us. I'm looking for a guy who can catch passes and get YAC. A big dude. I think that is what we are missing.
I liked Brown from Ole Miss. He ran fast enough and he ran very good routes. Good hands. Very quick out of the cuts.

Vers, a lot of good valid info you have shared...I didn't catch the combine, but kept dropping in during work.
I know the Dline is being heavily touted in this draft class...However I love the WR, TE, and CB class...a lot of superb depth...a lot of guys being touted as bottom guys in round 5 to 7...When watching tape, some appear (at least to me) look a lot like guys I've watched go in rounds 3 and 4. Rb class has very strong depth as well...And the Oline has a lot more talent than in the past couple years...It's a great year to have extra picks.
Parris Campbell has immense talent...Guy has that Percy Harvin talent...Guy has immense speed that is instant and can cut up or around the field...I am not a OSU homer, but the guy can really be a real weapon...My biggest concern with him is ultimately perhaps the most important one...His hands.
Hakeem Butler did very well on the combine...He looked like a 4.55 guy on tape, but ran much quicker...I agree that we need a bigger guy that get those 50/50 balls...I too was hoping he could be a gem that would slide to us into round 2, while it's always still possible...Looks like others will gobble him up...I also didn't believe Butler was really 6'6...but he showed my wrong.
DK Metcalf, absolutely shined...However there is some worry, be interesting to see how his medicals go...And the guy never played a whole season...But bar none, just a polarizing talent.
AJ Brown measured an inch smaller...But built like a tank, very compact at 6'0 228...Moved and tracked the ball very well, his testing numbers also really shined...I didn't think he would get in the 4.49 he pulled...But he is a workout dude, and that is too be expected.
N'keal Harry ran well enough, ran what I thought he would-Which is why sometimes the 40 is over-rated...some guy's just test well in spandex lol That guy has a lot of Allen Robinson in him.
That TE from LSU (Moreau I believe) I know is really touted as a good blocker, and was projected later in the draft...Glad he had a good showing.
The TE Blanton, I was really looking to see how he did (I'm heavy on us getting a later blocking TE in this draft) I saw he didn't run well (4.95...was expected to be a 4.60 guy) But he is known as a blocker, who was under utilized as a receiver (what I try to look for later in the draft) But don't know how the rest of his testing went.
From what I saw the big Michigan TE Gentry struggled...I know he reminds a lot of Jesse James from a few years ago...Guy is so tall at 6'8 he tends to get sloppy...I like his passion in blocking and he gets chippy...However he plays too high because he is so tall, and doesn't generate enough pop. But he could be a guy to work with later in the draft.
If we decide to only go WR late in the draft a guy I really like is Stanley Morgan JR out of Nebraska...He reminds me a lot of Higgins (He's not one of those huge targets, and he's not one of those burner types) But the guy plays and studies hard...And just comes up with the ball...If we are not able to extend Higgins to a longer contract...He's a guy that can fill that void...He's a guy that owuld go round 3 or 4 in a modest year WR class, and will drop to 4-7 this year because of this immense class.
I always enjoy reading your draft takes, tru. I know very little about this year's draft other than some guys who stood out to me while watching games this year. I haven't studied anyone. The Combine stuff was just some things that stood out to me.
I was really surprised by how well Campbell caught the ball. All hands and it stuck. Looked very natural. I also like his cuts on some routes. Not sloppy like a lot of guys. He also didn't get off the line on the Gauntlet drill. I think that is important because you don't want "weavers." He looked much better than I thought he would.
I didn't mention it earlier, but a couple of the Georgia receivers impressed me. Not the fastest guy, but the other two.
The TE from LSU looks like he could be a combo TE in that he can block and catch.
You're right, the Michigan TE looked bad at the Combine.
The defensive guys should be interesting. A lot of talent on that side of the ball.
One thing that jumped out at me was how fast the Buckeye WRs were. I think all of them were in the 4.3's.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
Campbell was a 4.31, MaLaurin was a 4.35, and Dixon was a 4.41.
Metcalf's speed was just unreal for a guy his size. I just worry that he's so tightly wound, physically, that he'll pop something.

Vers, positive praise to you as well...I know you know a lot about the game and you watch a lot of football...not just Browns ball. So I always check and view your insight as well.
I can't say I watched a lot of OSU, But of course in Buckeye Nation everyone around these parts is an OSU guy...A lot of folks mentioned to me Parris struggled with drops, and easy ones as well...Though I could be wrong, he seemed to fair better this past year...hopefully someone can chime in with more on that aspect...He is one prior to the draft I was hoping we could snag for his play making flair at the top of round 3...However it is doubtful he lasts that long now.
Georgia guys off the top of my head are Calvin Ridleys bro; Riley Ridley and I believe Terry Godwin...Turk I'm sure has more insight on this, as I know he's a diehard Georgia guy. I haven't seen much of Ridley, so I won't say much...I do like Godwin as I feel he's another guy that will go later, whom would normally be a mid round guy...but gets pushed down because the immense talent. He reminds me very much to Stanley Morgan.
Can't wait to see what the defensive guys bring...Now I know one I'm interested in is Deandre Baker...guy reminds me of a poor man's Champ Bailey...I know he is not the athlete of Champ, Heck I still remember Champ ran what a 4.26 or something at the combine...But this guy (Baker) is so fundamentally strong...
LBs should be interesting too...I wouldn't mind us taking two LBs this year, obviously we'll learn more with FA coming around the corner...Obviously going to see what White and Mack Wilson do...And mid round guys like Pratt, Hanks, Christian Miller show...a late guy I really like is the kid from Duke, I forget his name but he looks like a gem with his projection being so late.
I complained about Campbell w/some drops this year. That is why I was pleasantly surprised w/how he caught the ball yesterday.
I'm a fan of Deandre Baker, too. In fact, I made a post about him somewhere on this forum. Maybe this thread? He's very physical and can play both zone and man. I like that combination.
I'm going to pay attention to the DT's and Edge guys today, as well. I heard both groups are talented and deep. We could use help there and we have a GM who recognizes talent. It's exciting.
Sweat was someone I though reminds you of poor Jason Taylor (long long arms is where it starts) I mentioned him 6 months ago (I believe he was injured at the time) He wasn't getting any buzz, but man has he poured it on lately...Kwhip that is blazing speed for man 240-250...have they made it official yet?
