same here

Perriman was active for only 10 games, and really only played much for 8 games. If you take his numbers and calculate them out over 16 games, he would have 25 catches for 540 yards. In his 16 catches, he had 4 of 20+ yards, and 2 of 40+.

Bear in mind that he also had zero preseason snaps with the team, and had no experience in the offense. Baker probably didn't even know his name at 1st. They appeared to develop some chemistry as the year progressed.

His hands, which were a major problem in Baltimore, appeared to be resolved here in Cleveland.

People keep talking about wanting a big, fast WR. Well, here he is, already on the roster. He ran a 4.24 at his Pro Day, back when he was entering the draft. He certainly appears to still have that speed.

Sometimes it takes a player time to put it all together. Perriman appears to be doing so here in Cleveland, I hope we keep him.

So, if I hear you right, when put into context, he was a pretty good receiver with a better than average upside and perfect size! Do I have that right?

Well, he's 6'2" ...... so if not perfect size, it's good size. I do like his upside ... and Perriman had 0 drops last year. The Browns, as a team, dropped 36 passes last year, led by Landry with 11.

Now I am not paying Perriman Landry money, but if we can hold onto him for a solid+ #2/3 type deal, then I do that all day long.

No biggy guard, we are in a dead zone.

10 days away from some FA action

And around 7 weeks from the draft.

So just having fun speculating from what little we know. As you stated the little we do know is his Agent so its easy to speculate on him. You know he is doing it for the money and not what is good for Perriman. He just wants that fat contract with some guarantee money, get his Fee and let Perriman buts as did Prior.

Thats the speculation game in the dead zone...lol

Why would it be a bad idea? I think it a good idea.

We can match if we wish. It will also get some interest from teams. Let them set the market. I doubt some team is going to go crazy in making him a offer. If they do, we pick up a 4th fifth round pick.

Because Higgins is worth more than a 5th round pick, whether that's as a result of him being a talent on this roster or in terms of compensation if a team offers him a contract and we don't match. At least that's my opinion.

Here's the catch thought. They have to pay him AND give up a 5th round pick. I think Browns fans need to look at his production and then have a realistic approach to his actual value on the market. It's not as high as some make it out to be.

Just to note:

Players can be RFA tendered at one of three levels.

(2018 numbers)

1st round tender: $4.2 million
2nd round tender: 2.91 million
Original round tender: $1.91 million

There is only a $1 million difference between an original (5th) and a 2nd round tender. If they really want to make sure they keep Higgins, they go with the 2nd round tender. With the cap space the Browns have, the difference is negligible.

And, if you ask Mayfield, I bet he tells you he wants him here.

Bake didn’t develop a chemistry with Higgins because Higgins is anything special ... it was purely the reps they had together ... some of ya’all just don’t get it ...

Thats not a slam on Higgins .. i’m thrilled he’s coming back but he is overrated by most on this board ....

BRIEAN BODDY-CALHOUN
DB, UNSIGNED FREE AGENT

The Browns will not tender restricted free agent CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun a contract, making him a free agent.

GM John Dorsey said last week that the Browns would tender Boddy-Calhoun, but the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports there has been a change of heart. A 2016 undrafted free agent, Boddy-Calhoun has made at least six starts for the Browns each of the past three seasons. He has never been terribly effective.

I'm rather surprised by this one. He is at least quality depth. But I will take into consideration that Dorsey said he would be tendered and from the Plain Dealer it's just "a report". Gotta wait to see how it plays out.

Great, I still say that if you asked Mayfield, he'd want him back,,,, Which by the way is all I was saying.

Somewhat surprising, but not drastically. He played decently, but I never believed that he's been worth the admiration and pimping he's gotten on here. Very much average, and very replaceable if he and his agent are thinking they are getting a gigantic contract.

Nobody will pony up a 2nd rounder for him, and an original round tender gets us nothing, so tendering him really makes little sense.

I think your point about the second round tender is probably true in that teams won't be willing to give up a 2nd. So tender him there so you know you have him at least for 2019 (the $$ between the two tender levels is a $1M difference) and see if you can work on a fair extension. If the team gives him the original tender, you risk losing him and get worse value in return.

No, if you're going to do anything, you either skip the tender completely or you do tender at the original level. While we wouldn't get anything if we don't match, we would at least get right of first refusal in the opportunity to match. At that point, however, just skip the games and let him test the waters. We'll make our offers, he'll field others.... he isn't such a large piece of the machine that we need to make extra efforts to ensure he stays or can't afford to let him go if he doesn't want to be here. While he has started for us, he is NOT a starter; he's second-tier at best, and that is replaceable.

I don't think losing BBC is a huge deal, but I am not sure why we didn't at least tender him. He's at the very least a great player to have in a backup role and he was going to be cheap.

My guess is that he's not a fit in the new defense.

I mentioned this point in the WR thread as well. It only makes sense to give Higgins the second round tender. The $1M difference in salary is inconsequential. It also allows you to evaluate Higgins for another year and work out a long term deal.

Giving Higgins the original round (5th) tender seems to be the move you make if you really aren't all that interested/concerned in keeping him here another year and beyond.

Meh,

If a team signs him it would take a few mil a year because he'll get a couple mil to stay in a system and with he QB he trusts. I don't see many teams doing that and also giving up a 5th round pick.

If the Browns were shopping and he was out there, I wouldn't want us doing it. Maybe I just don't value him as highly as most, but if someone wanted to overpay I'd take the 5th rounder. If they set a decent market price without too much guaranteed money, then I'll be happy to resign him.

I felt like BBC performed extremely well in 2017. Then in 2018 it seemed like his playing time got cut. Based on his 2017 performance, I was confused as to why he didn't play as much last year.

With that being said, I'm not surprised to see him on his way out. Solid nickel guy. I think we can get better though.

Hope he does well wherever he goes.

We might be, we're just not tendering him and we're allowing him to test free agency.

If nothing else, I think that this suggests that perhaps he & his agent are rather far off in their assessment of his value as compared to the front office's valuation of him. We probably don't see him as worth as large of a contract as they think, so we're just not even playing games and letting him find out his value. Just a guess on my part, but a reasonable one, I think.

Not sure where to put this ...

DUKE JOHNSON
RB, CLEVELAND BROWNS

640 Miami's Andy Slater reports the Eagles and Cowboys have both expressed interest in trading for Duke Johnson.

Slater isn't a typical Rotoworld source, but he has real connections this time of year. On top of that, Johnson is a Miami alum, so there's likely some fire where this smoke is coming from. It's no secret the Browns have deemed Johnson expendable after signing Kareem Hunt to go with Nick Chubb. Johnson can likely be had for a Day 3 draft pick considering his contract status as one of the league's higher-paid running backs. The Eagles would be a nice landing spot.

A bit of a surprise. Just looking in to the crystal ball, maybe a good indication we plan on drafting a corner or two.

If so, Dorsey is doing the kid a solid.

No one is overrating Hollywood. He is a #3 WR. But he is worth more than a 5th round pick. He has worked hard on his craft, and has shown great improvement since being drafted. He has been a model teammate and citizen, and wants to play here.

I want guys like that on this team. Give me Higgins over AB any day of the week. The attitude and drive to WIN is contagious.

Edit to add:

Also, WR typically hit their stride in year 3. Look at the jump Higgins took from year 1 to year 2. Don't give me it was all baker throwing him the ball either. Higgins caught EVERYTHING this year it seemed. And he made a lot of TOUGH catches that bailed Baker out. Give him another year and lets see if he can become a #2.

Quoting you simply because your wording on Calhoun is a good jumping off point...

We already needed to draft a corner or two... now we need to get one more. I have grown to despise this type of offseason move. I do understand that Calhoun is not the cornerstone of this team, but he's quality depth at a position where we had depth issues a couple months ago. Guy can fill in at both safety and corner. He's a borderline starter-level talent at nickel. Saying you're going to let him go because you can do better is dumb. I mean, sure, you can do better but you can also do worse. I hope this is just the PD swinging and missing or, at worst, Dorsey trying to soften up Calhoun's camp. We are so close to breaking through and making this team into a winner... we've got to minimize the number of backwards steps.

He's only 26 (just turned in Jan.). Played both safety and corner and a very reliable backup.

I hope he stays.

--Duke to Dallas makes some sense. Rod Smith, their a backup RB, is a FA. Duke to Philly makes some sense, as well. Duke is similar to Sproles and I heard that the latter may retire.

--I think Higgins will be w/the Browns next year. I have my doubts about Perriman. Just a hunch on both.

You bring up a really good point. Our defense has new coaches. Do we know how that will affect how our current talent is deployed (in this case, how does our new D play to Calhoun's strengths/weaknesses)?

Higgins is legit. I think his ceiling is a #2 WR but that's still worth extending considering we don't have a #1 WR

Good stuff, thanks!
I thought the dude painted a pretty good picture of what we've seen from Higgin's in his conclusion to the article.

Quote:
FINAL THOUGHTS

Higgins broke out in year three, in large part to his improved attention to detail at his position, and aligning with a stellar quarterback in Mayfield.

In Higgins' first two years, he had 33 total catches for 389 yards and two touchdowns.

In year three he shattered those numbers in just 13 games. Despite only three more targets than the year before, Higgins reeled in 39 catches for 572 yards and four touchdowns.

The linear improvement is a welcome sight for the Browns. Higgins contributed heavily despite limited opportunities.

Higgins was fifth in targets, yet averaged a whopping 14.7 yards per reception. His 73.6 percent catch rate led the receiver group by a wide margin.

According to Football Outsiders' DVOA ranking, Higgins finished 11th overall in the entire NFL. The metric measures the value of the performance on plays where this receiver caught the ball, compared to replacement level.

Higgins ranked 14th in the AFC with 27 of his 39 catches going for first downs - 69.2 percent.

Also, Higgins ranked sixth in the entire NFL in first-down receptions per target at 50.9 percent (27 of 53). He also came down with five catches for first downs on snaps of third and 7 or longer -- one less than Jarvis Landry, who had nearly triple the total targets.

Higgins played only 483 snaps while Antonio Callaway played 765 and Landry 957. Now, some of this is due to injury, but he was outpaced by receivers who did less with more opportunities.

Those numbers are not to diminish the other options within the Browns offense, but rather to show what kind of consistency Higgins brings. He maximizes his opportunities. When Higgins gets the ball, good things happen for the Browns offense.

Agreed. We drafted him, he's one of our own and he's productive. Keep him.
