So what is the difference? I mean really...
If you are claimed off waived-injured I assume the team picking you up also picks up your contract right? Or am I mistaken? Then the player goes on the 53 man roster...where he can stay or be placed on IR? They can't "cut" an injured guy, right? So his contract is still valid...just don't give an injury settlement and the guy is basically tied to the team?
The catch is that the new team gets the contract and the roster spot gets used up.
However, with the Practice Squad you get...ummmm...the same treatment.
So I ask - and you'll laugh about this Peen - but why not put McGinest and Baxter on waived-injured? No one will dare to pick up those contracts and our own guys don't know if those two will ever play again. We keep them...they get paid...and IF they ever come back, they are tied to us.
It's too easy...I've got to be missing something...or maybe I'm on to something...or maybe I'm on something....I dunno.
Any help?

The NFL is different from Baseball and Basketball.
No contracts are guaranteed. Once a player is released or waived, his contract with the team is terminated.A team might not claim a player off of waivers ..... but long term veterans aren't subject to waivers anyway ...... and are free to sign with any team once released. They are no longer "tied to" any team.
A player who is "waiver/injured" is typically a player with an injury subsancial enough to cause him to miss some time ... but usually not more than 1/4 to 1/3 the season. The team and player negotiate a settlement, and the player is released. The team is off the hook for the remainder of the current year's salary, and the player can have a shot at playing somewhere the same season.

Thanks YTown! I got a thing for trying to circumvent the system. I always thought that an injured player could not be cut until they were better or an injury settlement was reached. It must have something to do with the severity of the injury...as you stated. Thanks again.

Could you please explain to me the Unck situation? I am baffled by it. Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, Unck is injured, and the injury is such that he is judged to be unavailable for a major part of the year. Thus the team placed him on IR.
