UNITED NATIONS -- The United States says it was one of three countries to vote against a U.N. resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism over freedom of speech issues and concerns that Russia was using it to carry out political attacks against its neighbors.

The resolution entitled "Combating glorification of Nazism, Neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fueling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance," was approved by the U.N.'s human rights committee on Friday with 131 in favor, 3 against with 48 abstentions.

Ukraine and Palau were the other no votes.

"We condemn without reservation all forms of religious and ethnic intolerance or hatred at home and around the world," said Deputy U.S. Representative to the Economic and Social Council Stefanie Amadeo, explaining the U.S. vote.

"However, due to this resolution's overly narrow scope and politicized nature, and because it calls for unacceptable limits on the fundamental freedom of expression, the United States cannot support it," Amadeo said.

She said the U.S. also disagrees with the resolution's willing to curb freedom of expression even while sharing its concerns about the rise of hate speech around the world.

"This resolution's recommendations to limit freedom of expression, freedom of association, and the right to peaceful assembly contravene the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and must be opposed," Amadeo said.

Unlike resolutions in the Security Council, resolutions in General Assembly committees are not considered legally binding.

And as much as you hate it, it will be a thing for a very long time to come. Most people understand that we aren't just a nation. Most people understand it's a planet and that on some level we all have to work together.

It certainly is. Some speech upsets people. Some speech has led to a terrible idea almost taking over the planet.

I'd kind of like to see the fine print before getting too worked up either way.

The headline sounds bad. That's what gets clicks, though.

How exactly they proposed to address the issue matters.

It does. And if the wording wouldn't protect our rights it would have been nice to see us try to get it changed in a way we could support it or to at least put out a statement saying we would like to have supported it and agree with it in principal.

But we didn't.

Along with many UN resolutions. The small arms treaty would have been in confict with the 2nd. This nazi resolution conflicts with the 1st.

You just can't let fascism rise, period. Those who hide hate speech behind free speech need to be punched in the mouth as soon as they start speaking. Everytime.

I think what confuses a lot of people is that they believe free speech is covered to include everywhere. It's not. Businesses and individuals have the right to say what an employee or person says on their own property or at their place of business.

With the anti-Nazi resolution, there are other problems, too. The U.S. has long expressed concerns that Russia uses the annual resolution to mount political attacks against its neighbors. That’s because Moscow has for decades sought to portray the Baltic states and others that sought independence from Soviet domination as either pro-fascist or pro-Nazi, U.S. officials said.

The United States has been considering a last-minute push in the General Assembly to amend the resolution to remove what it considers the problematic parts, in what officials said would amount to a wholesale overhaul. But officials said no final decision had been reached. Even if the U.S. does try to change the resolution so that it could vote for it, the effort is unlikely to succeed.

Will Israel, the close U.S. ally whose history is intertwined with the Holocaust, vote with the U.S.? In the past, Israel has voted for the resolution. But Washington has been pushing the Jewish state to vote “no” this year, or at a minimum to abstain.

It’s unclear how Israel will vote. A spokesman for Israel’s mission to the U.N. didn’t respond to a request for comment.
