Deputy sheriff turns in son for arrest over fires at historically black churches in Louisiana

Police arrested the 21-year-old son of a sheriff's deputy in connection to fires at three historically black churches in one Louisiana Parish in just 10 days. CBS News has learned it was the suspect's father, Deputy Roy Matthews, who turned him in to authorities. The fires were devastating to the St. Landry Parish community.

Investigators arrested suspect Holden Matthews Wednesday evening. He was charged Thursday morning with three counts of simple arson of a religious building.The maximum penalty for each counts is 15 years in prison.

Matthews' social media shows he had an interest in black metal music and is the lead singer for a band called Vodka Vultures. Records show Matthews lives in Saint Landry Parish, where the churches burned just a few miles apart. Police have not yet revealed a motive.

The churches were empty at the time of each fire and no one was hurt.

Earlier this week, the NAACP said the church burnings were "domestic terrorism," targeting people because of their skin color and faith.

Attacks on black churches have long been used as a way to intimidate the black community, most notably during the civil rights era. Though police in Saint Landry Parish have heightened security at nearby churches, parishioners have not stopped their Sunday worship and all the pastors say they will rebuild.

The fires began on March 26 at St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre followed by Greater Union Baptist on April 2 and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church on April 4.

"There's still people that need to be helped, there's still ministry that has to be done, so we can't let this setback stop us from doing what God has initially called us to do," said Pastor Kyle Sylvester of St. Mary's Baptist Church.

The FBI and ATF have been assisting local police with the investigation.

Authorities say they will announce "significant updates" at a press conference Thursday morning with Louisiana's governor.

Black Metal followers are known church burners, they are satan worshipers and other such nonsense.

There was a Norwegian group that got caught up in church burning and forming a sort of cult. The music uses satanic references for mostly shock value, just like the corpse makeup they used to wear. But saying the 'followers' are known church burners and satan worshipers is ridiculous. It is a subcategory of Heavy Metal that had some bad press over a group of idiots. Most kids who listen to this are just into the sound or the atmosphere created by it. But I can see why you don't want to admit how foolish you sounded because I can see that me calling you out for the stupid crap you say is wearing on you.

Still waiting for something tangible.. what we know now is that the arsonist was a white dude, son of a deputy, who was into black metal and dark spiritual stuff.

Still waiting for an actual motive, still waiting to find out if he had anything to do with the attempted arson of a predominantly white church about an hour north that happened about the same time..

It will be interesting to find out exactly why he did it, why he chose those churches, what he was hoping to accomplish... according to the one article, there was a black church between two of the ones he burned, why didn't he go after that one? Or had he just not gone after it yet?

I think he was trying to compare it to just how outraged the GOP seemed to be when they found out a liberal pulled a cheap publicity stunt. Now they don't seem to be as outraged.

We knew the motives on that one though. A conscious decision was made by a seemingly highly intelligent person to purposefully divide is not the same as some lunatic burning down a church.

Now, the latter is far worse but there is no debate on it's intent or condemnation, hence the crickets. The reason there was much more outcry on the smollet is that is was a faked race hate crime and that was KNOWN. We can draw conclusions on this guy, but we don't know the motives and we know with almost certainty this person is going to prison. Smollets situation was unprecedented because while we knew about fake hate crimes, none had ever been so public and he was a "celebrity".

It's apples and oranges other than race being involved.

‘Hate’ May Have Driven Suspect Holden Matthews To Burn Black Churches

The suspect in a series of arsons that burned three historically black Louisiana churches over the course of 10 days may have been driven by “hate,” a state fire marshal said.

Authorities arrested Holden Matthews, 21, at about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in rural St. Landry Parish where the fires occurred in late March and early April. He was charged with several counts of simple arson on religious buildings and faces up to 15 years in prison for each.

Matthews is the son of a St. Landry Parish sheriff’s deputy, and according to The Daily Beast, has implied white supremacist leanings through his Facebook page.

On Thursday, state Fire Marshal Butch Browning said an investigation is still underway, but that investigators were looking into a “hate motive” as well as Matthews’ ties to black metal music.

“This community is safe again,” said Browning, noting he was “confident” that “we have the person responsible for these tragic crimes.”

Police accuse Matthews of starting three fires, one at a church in Port Barre on March 26, and two in Opelousas on April 2 and April 4. All three are historically black churches. A fourth fire, also believed to be intentionally set on March 31, occurred at the predominantly white Vivian United Pentecostal Church, located in Caddo Parish, more than 200 miles away. Police didn’t connect Matthews to it.

On what appears to be his Facebook profile, Matthews describes himself as the lead singer of a black metal band called Vodka Vultures, and he’s active on several black metal and pagan pages. On one of the pages, Matthews commented on two memes about former neo-Nazi musician Varg Vikernes, who in 1994 was convicted of murder and arson after he burnt down churches in Norway and killed a fellow musician, the Beast reported.

On another page, Matthews reportedly commented on a photo depicting a pagan figure with a belt that one user though looked like a swastika. “Well yea the belt gives him extra strength and power.....white power lmao jk jk I had to,” Matthews wrote.

Police have yet to confirm a motive in the attacks or Matthews’ ideology.

An FBI spokesperson also said that federal authorities were looking into the arsons as a “bias” crime.

In a press release, the NAACP said “what is happening in Tennessee and Louisiana is domestic terrorism,” referencing the burning of a civil rights center in Jefferson County on March 29.

“We must not turn a blind eye to any incident where people are targeted because of the color of their skin or their faith,” the group said in a statement Monday, adding that African American churches have been targeted for decades. “The spike in church burnings in Southern states is a reflection of the emboldened racial rhetoric and tension spreading across the country. But this is nothing new.”

That article deserves to be buried because there is nothing in it. So they are looking into a hate motive? Dude burned 3 black churches, of course he hates somebody.. question is who? Does he hate blacks? Does he Christians? Does he hate black Christians?
