Could someone please tell me why they like the stones? Other than about 3 songs, I've never liked their music. I just don't see the attraction.

A few thoughts on what others have listed. And I'm not trying to belittle anyone's opinion, it's all a matter of taste (my personal favourite band wouldn't make anyone's top 10 list).

1. I find it hard to think of the Eagles as a rock band.... soft-rock, maybe. But even that's a stretch IMO. I find them country/southern rock, but more country than rock. And I'm a fan of them, by the way.

2. Thanks Ytown for mentioning April Wine. One of my favourites. Under-rated around the globe.

3. I never even thought of the Grateful Dead until someone else brought them up, but they definitely deserve consideration.

4. I don't consider the Temptations or Johnny Cash to be rock and roll.

5. I'm still kicking myself for forgetting about Pink Floyd last night.

6. Except for Buddy Holly, I didn't go with any bands fronted by 'the guy'. I wanted to give a nod to the early rockers. Otherwise I would have included Springsteen and Elvis on my top 10.

Their first two albums were decidedly country-rock, but their 3rd album "On The Border" was a bit of a departure if you listen to the guitars on "Already Gone" and the title cut, "On The Border". This was the first album after Don Felder joined the Eagles - Felder was an accomplished slide guitar man, and he buttressed Eagles lead guitarist Bernie Leadon quite a bit. Leadon was a great multi-talented string player on guitar, mandolin, and banjo, but his love was country-rock and blue grass music. When Felder came on board, Leadon felt himself being marginalized and left the band. Enter Joe Walsh, who provided soaring two-guitar rock with Felder on the Hotel California album - listen to them on "Victim of Love" and "Hotel California" and see if you still think they're "not rock". There really was two Eagles entities, one country rock and one very solid rock 'n roll - both legit, IMO.

the Stones were kinda looked at in a different light then the Beatles. Light dark. ying yang. decaff caffinated.
the Stones had a rebellious streak about them.
when the Beatles broke up in 1970...the Stones I guess took the throne as the greatest rock band in the world.
I think their catalog is hit and miss.
the drug busts,Altamont only added to their mystic or legend.
they put on a huge spectacle but see them live their set list is from 3 4 albums.
you never hear Undercover of the Night live or Highwire

Yeah, the Eagles were rock. The had a bit of a western influence, but Hotel California, Life in the Fastlane, Those Shoes, Victim of Love, Desperado, Lyin' Eyes, Witchy Woman, Dirty Laundry, etc, etc are definitely rock!

Its okay not to like the Stones, its certainly your right. But those of us who do like them have the right to at least wonder how you can hear "Can't you Hear Me Knockin'", "Brown Sugar", "Honky Tonk Women", "Gimme Shelter", "Tumblin' Dice", "Sympathy For The Devil", "Almost Hear You Sigh", and about 20 other rock standards, and NOT think ... "these guys were good.".

Btw---someone mentioned about global lists of the top Rock bands. They're out there. I looked at several of them before I started this thread. There are lists for albums and songs, too.

I will say that a lot of the lists that I saw included individual performers. I kept going back and forth on whether to include them or not. I chose not to because there are so many great rock bands/groups.

I have a question for you guys. I haven't seen anyone mention Genesis or Yes? I considered both.

Has anyone mentioned ELP?

Yep, the Stones had some crap songs, but they also had a lot of great songs. In addition to the ones you mentioned, think about Paint It Black, I Can't Get No Satisfaction, Heartbreaker, Angie, Get Off of My Cloud, Time is on My Side, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Monkey Man, Ruby Tuesday, Jumpin' Jack Flash, and Under My Thumb. I bet there are more, too. That's off the top of my head.

We only got 10.

I would definitely add Rush, ELO, and Yes. I'm sure there are many more.

That alone is absolutely insane.

That's over 38 hours a day, every day, 365 days a year, for 30 years...

Even if it's manhours, the band had 6 members at any given time? That's still 6.35 hours per day, every day, 365 days a year, for 30 years..

I'm questioning how they arrived at that number.

Lol. You’re right. I had seen most of those numbers before. When I went looking for them to post here I stumbled into that particular number. I added it without verifying it.
Hey, who’s to say that their use of psychedelics didn’t allow them to play that much... they crossed space and time man...

Ok.

Stones - Simply the greatest. Hit machine. Album machine. Started in 1962 still performing. Think about that. Probably has played to more sellouts than any band ever. In 2016 they played in Cuba to 700,000. Started as a blues cover band and morphed into The Rolling Stones. They influenced art, music, and culture.

Beatles - No band had the impact of the Beatles. Talk about cultural influence. They changed everything. Amazing song writers who left behind a legacy of music that has been altered and covered in every genre of music.

The Grateful Dead - Portland layed it out. "Dead Heads" come from all walks of life. Productivity, creativity, longevity. True excellence in musicianship. Song writing at the highest level. A band that all greats have played with and recognized for their accomplishments.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - They only lasted three years. Jimi of course was the front man. Their impact on music was like a tsunami. It hit everybody. Others were in awe. They left behind a trail like no other.

Led Zeppelin - They opened the door to heavy metal. But their essence was the blues. Great musicians. Produced some incredible albums.

The Who - Not only were they innovators and great musicians but unreal live performers. Their music is unmistakable.

U2 - Just a great band. Excellent musicians. Unique sound. Terrific songs. Socially conscience. One of the most popular bands in the world.

Queen - I am not huge fan but I recognize their impact and influence. I love some of their songs. Their performances are legendary

Crosby, Stills, and Nash - They created a sound that brought harmony to rock. Great vocals, well written songs and beautiful music.

CCR - I struggled here because there are a number of others that I considered. But when you hear their songs they just rock. They were cultural icons for their time. They produced a lot of great hits. Their sound was all theirs.

Edit. Brain failure.

After The Who is the Allman Brothers. Everybody after slides down a notch.

The Allman Brothers - To me they define Band. Great musicians who compliment each other. They play so well together.

At he bottom I am adding The Police.

The Police - Love that band. Great music, excellent writing. Good performers. Very popular. Some really great hits. The music is a great mixture.

Yeah - big fan of the police. I have never listened to that much of the Allman Brothers - but what I have heard I like a lot. And then there are bands like Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and T-Rex who never got a mention but all great bands.... The list goes on and on.

Missed it ! Sorry smile

I am going to use this thread to create a list of bands i need to listen to more. Based on most of the posts, I am pretty sure I will appreciate many. I listen to Pandora a lot and will plug in some of these to my list of 'stations' ...

Need to add a footnote I am following the criterion set by Vers.

My list does not necessarily reflect my favorite bands.

It is the bands that had the biggest impact on music and culture as well as world recognition.

Three bands that I did not list that I love and believe should be considered.

Dire Straits - Love their music. Mark Knopfler one of my favorite guitar players of all time. He is note bender.

Steely Dan - Jazz oriented super interesting arrangements. Original in style. Never toured much but a great studio band.

The Band - Again a band is good when they play well together and compliment each other. The Band is that kind. Excellent musicians and great material.

Yes - I made my list based on some personal preference but with a greater weight to the theme of the thread .... not my favorite bands. My 'favorites' fluctuate a little based on mood and what's going on in my life - two at the top that never change would be Zeplin and the Doors.

Thanks. It's a tough call.

I sometimes want to edit my original post and add ELP, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Yes, Bruce Springstein and the East Street Band, etc.

Great choice.

One of the best singers/front men in rock is Lou Gramm. It's a shame that he and Mick Jones could never seem to figure out that they worked pretty well together, when they actually wanted to work together. It's just horrible all that he went through with the brain tumor. It robbed him of much of his singing voice, and despite working so hard for so long to try to get it back, and the progress he's made, he's still not back to what he once was. However ..........

They have a new single out. They have actually teamed up with the aforementioned Lou Gramm for their latest effort.

Anyone who likes a lot of the classic bands, keep an eye on Frontiers Music.

You must hate the Stones.

Like them or not. There is no way under the criterion set forth that the Stones are not in the top five.

Just no way.

Favorites of course you are entitled.

To think, Duane Allman was only 22 or 23 years old on that track. It was a tragic loss to everyone that he died so young.
Here’s a cool link to follow. A little studio breakdown of Clapton and Duane playing together on Layla.

I heard Eric in an interview speaking of Duane and saying he was incredible.

I lived in Atlanta starting in 1978 and didn't move till 2015. There were times when I could not stand to hear the Allman Brothers because their music was played constantly.

I liked them and appreciated their quality I just grew so tired of hearing them.

Now I listen to them with renewed interest. Kind of came full circle. Lately I have been listening to them in the car. And it is like a new love.

They just played so well together. The music is outstanding.

When "Laid Back" came out after Duane's death I wondered how it would sound. It was a great album. Different but still great.
