CLEVELAND, Ohio — Browns GM John Dorsey tried to trade up into the first round for three players, but in the end, he was happy with what he got.

“I’m very happy to have Odell Beckham as the 17th pick in the 2019 draft,’’ Dorsey said as he wrapped up an uneventful night.

It’s not that he didn’t try hard to climb back into the first round. It’s just that the price was too high. He also vowed to work the phones on Friday in an effort to move up or down from No. 49. The Browns have eight picks in the final six rounds.

“There were about three guys we were looking at we thought may help us, you know to get up to the position where they were acquired at that time, I thought the compensation was too rich to move that far,’’ Dorsey said. “We’re in a position now, you know maybe you exercise a degree of patience in this and just see and we’ll start working tomorrow and we’re always going to work at this thing to see if we can get up there, but the compensation package was just too much for us as an organization.”

Did he come close?

“You know, you tried, but it takes two and every time we were trying, they'd kind of say, 'Well, you need to kick in a little bit more,' and I wasn't willing to do that,’’ he said.

He declined to say who he was after because “I think it's inappropriate’’ but did say all three got picked. He wouldn’t acknowledged that Mississippi State defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons was one of them, but Dorsey was effusive in his praise of Simmons throughout the pre-draft process and he may have been a target.

Ultimately, Simmons was picked No. 19 by the Titans, who will travel to Cleveland for the opener Sept. 8.

Dorsey seemed mildly disappointed he wasn’t able to strike a deal.

“It’s been a long night as you all know,’’ he said. “Unfortunately, it all depends ... every draft is different as we move forward and you could see trends start running up and down, so you know, we didn’t get up in the first round like you guys thought we would. You know what we have eight picks in the next two days and we look forward to that and I think we’re gonna acquire some really good players moving forward.”

As for trying to move up, possibly for one of the many cornerbacks still on the board, he said, “that's one of those questions, it's a hypothetical. You explore those options and then you see if you can get up there at the right price or you stay patient or you even kick back. Now we can really get into the exercise of moving up and moving back, and we will actively be working the phones all day, all evening tomorrow."

He was surprised only one corner came off the board in the first round — Georgia’s DeAndre Baker to the Giants at No. 30.

“If you really talk to a lot of people in this league, I think if you talked about the cornerbacks, how they had the cornerbacks rated, I bet you would ave 20 different stackings at the cornerback position this year,’’ he said. “That goes with a lot of these positions, but I do think there are some really talented football players gonna come off this board tomorrow and the next day.”

Likewise, only two receivers came off the board in Oklahoma’s Marquise Brown, to the Ravens at No. 25, and Arizona State’s N’Keal Harry to the Patriots at No. 32.

"Yeah, but there's no really marquee, there really was no marquee receiver, per se, but tomorrow you'll see a lot of receivers start peeling off the board,’’ he said.

He said he hadn’t time to digest what some of his foes such as the Ravens and Steelers had done, including a trade up to 10 by the Steelers for linebacker Devin Bush.

“No, right now I haven’t had a chance to analyze what the other teams had done per se,’’ he said. “What I was trying to do was kind of watch the board and watch the trends unfold on the board and there were a couple of times there I’d stop and listen to commentary on T.V. like I never really had done in the past drafts. Then I actually walked outside and got a bite to eat and ate some dinner and I thought that was good. Actually I went back about 9 o’clock and I had a second meal and that was good.’’

He was asked if the incriminating audiotape of Chiefs’ receiver Tyreek Hill allegedly discussing his three-year-old son’s injuries with his wife impacted his draft strategy regarding Simmons, who was captured on videotape in high school punching a woman. The Chiefs announced Hill will not participate in the their offseason workouts for the foreseeable future.

“No, I don’t know the details of the specifics of that yet,’’ he said. “Once I find out, we’ll talk about that and I don’t really know the details.’’

I've maintained that moving up in round 2 might prove to be a very good move.

There are two guys I really like who are still available.

Byron Murphy, the corner from Washington is very good. And, Jawaan Taylor, the OT from Florida is another intriguing guy.

I thought both would have been gone by now. I think I mentioned them several times last night when predicting upcoming picks. I believe Taylor had a first half of the first round grade.

I think either one could really help us. I think Murphy also makes a ton of sense.

Get it done, buddy boy!

Jawaan is said to have a knee issue, teams must have flagged him.


I like Greedy Williams as well, I thought he could have been a 1st rounder.

I did not watch the draft, was not home, and only caught up later. I completely missed Murphy not getting picked. I guess that was something I did not think was possible.

Move up to pick this guy.

Man, there are a lot of good players available. Round 2 is typically a good place to find real gems. Here are a couple of links where you can view the best available players heading into day 2.

Greedy Williams has shut down corner written all over him. Would be ecstatic to get him in round 2.


Murphy ran a 4.55 and is 5'11. Greedy Ran a 4.37 and is 6'2.

I think Williams dropped because he doesn't like to tackle.

I like Murphy better.

The older I get the less inclined I am to take DB's who aren't athletic. The reason I was stanning for Denzel Ward was his elite athleticism. Greedy is a high end upside, 4.55 as a rookie is low end upside IMO, isn't that what Joe Haden ran? That's just personal preference.

The magic of Dorsey is that he either saw this loaded 2nd round coming, or just lucked into it, but a bunch of these guys have 1st round grades.

To me this is key.... You need a CB who can tackle. If Williams doesn't like to tackle, I'll pass on him.

I have yet to read the comments, but here is my guess ... Simmons, Dillard, and McGary or Tillery is my guess as to who those 3 guys where.

Glad we didn't move yesterday. Today is the day I want to move up. Maybe not as much from #49 but to get back in to round 2 or back in to round 3.

Maybe even move down from 49 and maybe gaining enough that we can end up with 2 pick in each of rounds 2 and 3.

I am of a completely different mindset. I almost don't want them tackling unless they have to. We missed Ward for a few games digging his nose in last year. I want guys who can run with these gazelles like OBJ.

I'm neutral on jumping back into the 1st round. I think we are in a place, talent-wise, where we can afford to spend a little more to get that extra blue-chip talent instead of multiple players at multiple spots.

That said, it reassures me that Dorsey really really wanted to get after a couple guys but ended up showing restraint when it meant overpaying.

Love having Dorsey around.

Pittsburgh drafted corners whom were better tacklers than cover guys...and it didn't pay off for them.

I like Murphy a lot...I think he is fundamentally sound and more consistent game in and game out compared to Greedy...Greedy has those traits that make you drool, he is just wildly inconsistent...Both are superb value in round 2...I think Murphy is safer and fool proof.

I do not like Lonnie Johnson at all, and I don't like Layne as a round 2 prospect...wouldn't mind him in round 3...But I think he is overrated.May be hopeful wishing but I would love Mullen to fall into our laps in round 3 (I really think Dorsey is going to pull the trigger on Juan Thornhill in round 2) JoJuan Williams is another corner I would'nt mind in round 3..I think he is better than Layne and Lonnie, and maybe more underrated. Obviously they are not without their issues.

I thought moving back into the first would be too expensive. I'm glad Dorsey did his due diligence because that's his job. But after exploring those options it appears he came to the same conclusion.

I think the sweet spot will be somewhere between 33 and 40 for a move up. There is a lot of quality help left at the secondary positions and we are in the position that with a small investment to move up from where we're sitting now, we can have one of the top secondary prospects in this draft. That's an enviable position for Dorsey to be sitting in.

This draft really couldn't have worked out any better considering our secondary needs and how many top picks are there for the taking.

I could also seeing us move up from the third to the bottom of the second round as well.

What I consider is that with the roster we have now, the odds of these much lower picks like late 5th through 7th rounders of making our roster are much lower than they were in years past. We are at that juncture where quality over quantity makes more sense.

I kept waiting for a run on secondary players, but it never came. It will be coming now.

Kind of hope we sit still and let the talent fall to us in round 2...and possibly trade up afterwards if there is still someone we like (even if it means trading a mid round pick next year, we can always make that back of a possible comp pick or trade) I really like the talent in the middle and further down in this draft.

I'm really good with the pick. He's got speed and size. You can't teach that. You can teach proper tackling etc. I wonder if he can return punts or kicks?
