This is a great value pick at a position of need. Going into draft season this guy was one of the best players available.

I didn't think he would be there at # 17! He was my top rated CB. When the first round ended last night I was hoping that we'd get him.

I love Dorsey, but I'm not sure about this pick. He could be really good. He could also be a big disappointment. I get that is a generic statement that can apply to almost everyone, but I'll elaborate a bit.

Greedy has great athletic talent. He's very good in coverage. He has good ball skills.

On the other hand, he refused to tackle and regressed this past year. That speaks to effort. I'm not a fan of low-effort players.

Perhaps he was coasting so he wouldn't get injured and hurt his draft status, but what will he do in his contract year? What will he do when he needs to make a real stop when the game on the line? Will he make "business decisions?"

I'm not saying he is a bad pick, but multiple tweets posted by one poster will not convince me that it was a good pick. Tweets look real cool on here, but most of them don't carry much weight.

I did kind of get a Gilbert vibe from him early on.

However, I get the sense that he actually enjoys football. Maybe not tackling so much, but he'll do it when he has to. Listening to some interviews made me feel better. Seems determined to do well for his family.

He is a smooth mover with ball skills. The league is trending that way. Hopefully, he'll be a more willing tackler as he fills out his frame.

Taking a player with Gilbert's upside at 46 is not a problem. Taking Gilbert in the top ten and justifying his attitude is a problem. Hopefully dropping this far puts a chip on Williams’ shoulder.

Can't believe he was there. Dorsey must have been chomping at the bit. Great pick and value. Will be all kinds of fun watching our corners now. Opposing QBs will have tighter windows and very little time this year me thinks.

This is all extremely valid and a very fair way to look at him as a player.

I'm nervous about why his tackles and production went way down this past year. He was a really good tackler before this year and then suddenly he disappeared on the field this year as a hitter.

What's going to happen when it's his contract year and he's dogging it because he didn't get what he wanted? Could be a serious problem.

On the other hand, he's extremely sticky to his man. Flips his hips really well, stays with his man and his long arms help him make a play on the ball at all times. I wish he were more disciplined with his hand usage and I think he's a guy prone to brain farts. But as a #2 corner? I think he'll be a good addition.

The only thing that will stop him is if he continues his poor efforts as a tackler and doesn't grow from it. He has the talent to be a better corner than Ward if he wants. But unlike Ward, I'm not sure if he has that same commitment to make plays.

I cannot argue with the value at 46, though. At the very least, he's a really good cover corner with poor edge setting ability. Those guys are still hard to find.

The kid can Cover...that is why you pick a Cover corner...his intensity to tackle a RB...the kid is freaking 185...when he puts on 20lbs of muscle his attitude on coming up for the Run will change.

The fact is he is tall, has great arm length and one of the fastest D players in this draft. He will spend a lot of Nickle packages his first year. After a serious off season and as stated conditioning gets him beefed up with more muscle he will become a force.

But most important is Cover Corners...COVER. And this kid can do just that!

Like all prospects a lot will have to do with how much does this kid want it. How much is he willing to work hard for it!
If he has the right attitude and takes a lesson from his LSU mentors he will work hard to be the best. Fact is, he has a shot at becoming the best!

Love the pick, I'm a Homer of course I do...lol

What I do know.

In the beginning of all this when were talking about our #17 pick his name came up early and it was pretty much a given that he just will not be there at #17 so forget about him!!!

Well he's a Brown wink and we didn't have to move up from #17 to get him. nanner

I did wonder why the heck did this kid drop but I don't see an attitude problem...maybe he came across too cocky in his interviews? I worried about the red flag cause who lets a 6'2" 4.38 Cover Corner get by them in the draft! Gilbert...NO WAY not even CLOSE...

Did you hear Dorsey on that call? His voice was full of emotion. Man you can tell he wanted Greedy on our team bad and was ecstatic that he got him. I see great things from greedy.

Browns’ No. 46 pick Greedy Williams: ‘This team will be Super Bowl champs this year’ - cleveland.com
https://www.cleveland.com/browns/2019/04...-this-year.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Talk about getting Greedy. The Browns’ new cornerback wants it all in his rookie year.

“I know one thing – that the Browns are going to the Super Bowl this year," LSU’s Greedy Williams said exuberantly on his conference call Friday night after becoming the 46th selection of the NFL draft and first by the Browns this weekend.

Williams, whom the Browns traded up three spots with Indianapolis to get, was also fired up about the idea of starting opposite 2018 rookie star Denzel Ward, who made the Pro Bowl last year.

“Oh, my God, me and Denzel, we’re going to tear up the league,’’ said Williams. “You can go man on the outside all day, and we will lock down those receivers. Denzel is a Pro Bowl corner, came in his rookie year and did what he needed to do. I know he going to prep me up and get me ready to do the same thing. Possibly we can be the two Pro Bowl corners in the league playing for the same team.”

Williams, a 2018 Thorpe Award Finalist for the nation’s top defensive back, also knows he’ll get a warm welcome from fellow former LSU Tigers Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr., who gave him shoutouts on social media immediately after the pick.

“I know those guys are going to get me right as far as playing my position and them going against me,’’ said Williams (6-2, 185). “They’re going to tell me what they look for in a corner. I’m definitely ready to match up against those guys in practice and be able to cover anybody if you can cover them two.’’

Williams, who was born in Shreveport, La., said fellow Louisiana natives Beckham and Landry have come back to LSU and supported the team.

“Odell has been one of the guys that used to come back and just talk to us, send us shoes and things like that – Jarvis, as well,’’ said Williams. “Those guys are NFLSU (NFL/Louisiana State) guys. I am pretty sure that whenever I step into the Cleveland Browns headquarters, those guys are going to welcome me into the NFLSU. They are going to teach me how to be a great pro with Cleveland.”

Browns Vice President of Player Personnel Alonzo Highsmith was surprised to land Williams at No. 46, after sending their 144 overall pick in the fifth round to the Colts to draft him.

“He was a guy I never thought would be there at 49,’’ Highsmith said in a press conference. “I hope he comes here with a chip on his shoulder to prove he can be the best player in the draft, because he has the talent. The sky is the limit for him.’’

Williams is confident that his ballhawking skills will translate to the NFL. At LSU, he had eight picks and 19 passes broken up in his 25 starts over the past two seasons.

“I have been playing football my whole life, and I always loved to have the football in my hands,’’ he said. “Transferring to defensive back, I knew whoever threw at me that I need the ball in my hands. I made that impact as a defensive back. Coming to Cleveland, I am that guy who can get you the ball two or three times a game, and I know for sure that (QB) Baker Mayfield is going to capitalize with those interceptions I get.’’

Williams is confident he can be a key piece to get the Browns over the top.

“John Dorsey did a great job just getting the right guys in the right positions,’’ he said. “I feel like this team will be the Super Bowl champs this year. Add me to the team, you have a great corner that can play man to man and even turn the ball back over and let Baker Mayfield capitalize.

"Once the team gets together, it is going to be a dominant team, we are going through the whole league and we are definitely making that Super Bowl.”

Williams missed the call from the Browns at first, and had to call back. He was home in Shreveport, surrounded by friends and family, and his daughter was playing with his “draft phone,” the one reserved for calls just like these.

“Yes, I was sitting up on my other phone and I wasn’t paying attention to the draft phone,’’ he said. “The 216 number popped up on the screen, and my girl like kind of tapped me and said ‘look at your phone.’ I called back and I guess it was one of the guys at the front desk. He answered the phone, and he said he was about to transfer me to the GM.

“The GM told me it was the Cleveland Browns. I was shocked. I was filled with a lot of emotion just to be a Brownie. I’m just ready to get there and be one of the great players that they expect me to be.”

He said his young daughter was actually crying when the draft call was taking place.

“Just seeing her crying, I made sure that I grabbed her first, hugged her and let her know that Daddy is here, we finally made it, we are going to be in Cleveland and I hope she is ready to put on her orange, brown and white."

Highsmith acknowledged that Williams may have slipped in the draft because of concerns over his tackling. But Highsmith is convinced that Williams will bulk up and improve in that area.

When the Browns called him to tell him they were drafting him, coach Freddie Kitchens quipped, “you’re going to have to tackle a little bit’’ and Williams assured him that wouldn’t be a problem.

The seventh cornerback drafted, Williams believes he was a first-round corner, and Dorsey felt he’d be among the top five players picked on Friday.

“When I just got off the phone with my coach, he was like, ‘They really loved you. They got a first-round corner in the second round,’’’ Williams said.

Instead of stewing over slipping the past two days, “I was just overwhelmed. I was just thinking like, ‘Who’s going to get me?’ When I got the phone call from the 216 (area code) ... I was just happy. Filled with a lot of emotions. I am still replaying the phone call over in my head. I’m just happy to be a part of the Brownies. I’m ready to get in and put in a lot of work.”

Unbelievable package for us. Dorsey got us overwhelming value. But this has to stop.

I keep getting excited and pumped up for this roster, and I think I can't get more excited. And then something like this happens. And I get even more juiced. This one means a lot.

Wow!

2018 NFL Combine Denzel Ward ran a 40 time of 4.32. 2019 NFL Combine Greedy Williams ran a 40 time of 4.37. Dorsey likes blazing fast corners that is for sure.

Here's more. Hence the drop off in tackling this year? Cause dude had NO TACKLING PROBLEMS IN 2017.

Tony Pauline.....

Something to keep an eye on- the word swirling in the league is Greedy Williams agent refused to allow him to take any pre-draft visits as he was trying to conceal an injury, in large part the reason he fell so far. I won't go into detail other than to say it was not a lower extremity (knee/ankle/hip) injury.

I do have a major concern about taking Greedy. If him and Ward are both players how are we going to of them in 5 years? One of the major reasons I liked Sashi is he never put us in this situation by drafting good players who would eventually get a large contract.

I love this pick - I love corners who can cover ... sure I'd prefer a better tackler but I'll take a great cover corner who is a poor tackler over a good cover guy who can also tackle. AND - if there is any truth to his tackling issues being partly connected to a shoulder injury [1] I hope he heals up quick [2] maybe he's even better than advertised.

I guess I understand how Gilbert got brought up - but I'll trust that Dorsey did his due diligence on character and desire. Can't wait to see the D play next season.

Why is Greedy Williams skipping LSU's bowl game? Ask his family
By Brody Miller | Posted December 05, 2018 at 01:01 PM

Why was Greedy Williams crying?

His sisters assumed he just had the family come down from Shreveport to Baton Rouge for his 21st birthday. He hadn’t seen most of them since September.

They spent the weekend together: him, his mother, Lakesha, his older sisters, Keandre and Andrea. They FaceTimed in his brother, Rodarius, who plays at Oklahoma State.

They just sat around and spent time together. They ate fried chicken, red beans and rice, shrimp fried rice, everything.

It felt like old times, the Shreveport family that moved from Allendale to the projects of Illinois Street to the crime-heavy Cooper Road, together, enjoying a night of the kind of comfort that only family can bring.

But this weekend wasn’t about the past. This weekend was about the future, and how Greedy Williams was about to change that future for him and his family.

“Untouchable” by YoungBoy Never Broke Again started playing in the background. It’s a song about getting out of Baton Rouge and succeeding after nights without food, about doing it for his family.

Suddenly, Williams started to break down into tears. He didn’t say anything. He just let it all out and cried.

His sisters didn’t know why. They assumed he was just crying because the whole family was together again. But he knew why. The reality of his dreams began to hit him.

Twenty-four hours later, Williams announced he was declaring for the NFL Draft. A projected Top-5 pick, Williams could earn a signing bonus north of $20 million.

Williams also will sit out the Fiesta Bowl to avoid injury before the draft, a move that angered some LSU fans who said he was abandoning his team.

But those people don’t know that Lakesha Williams wouldn't let her son go outside in the tough Shreveport neighborhoods in which he grew up.

“Not many make it out,” she said. “It seemed like every day somebody was killed ... lots of drugs and shooting. I could go on and on.”

They don’t know that Greedy Williams at 19 had a daughter whom he doesn’t let leave his sight. They don’t know the Williams family prayed at night that he would get through the season without getting injured, hurting his chances at the NFL.

So, why was Williams crying in his apartment to “Untouchable” and not telling his siblings the reason? Why is Williams skipping the bowl game to not risk his chance? Andrea Williams didn’t know in the moment, but she knows why now.

“He had the right to change our family’s lives.”

When Khloe Williams was born, she couldn’t breathe. Greedy Williams was back with the mother, and Lakesha tried to avoid telling him.

Khloe was no accident, his siblings said. Williams wanted to start a family. He was always a sensitive, family-focused kid. His mother fought cancer when he was in middle school. His grandmother did it in 2017. Family meant so much to him, and he wanted to be a father.

Khloe came at a time in Williams’ life when he doubted things more than ever. LSU redshirted him his freshman year in 2016 in order for him to gain weight. He stood on the sideline shouting and cheering, waving a towel for his teammates, but it was hard not to feel slighted. Khloe came in February 2017.

And here was this baby girl sitting in his arms, seemingly at risk. The rest of the world seemed to fade away.

Williams called LSU cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond.

“I’m not coming back,” he said. “I’m staying by my baby’s side. I’m staying right here with her.”

It wasn’t an empty threat. The Williams family had to pull him aside and talk him out of it. They said Khloe shouldn’t drag him away from his dreams but propel him toward them.

“You have a daughter now,” his eldest sister, Keandre Williams, said. “You gotta work harder. You can’t give up now.”

The rest you know. Khloe turned out fine. Williams went back to school, earned the starting job in 2017 and became a two-time first-team All-SEC cornerback and a Jim Thorpe Award finalist this year. He became arguably the best cornerback in the country with eight interceptions the past two seasons.

On top of that, Williams became a father these past 19 months. He used to get annoyed with Lakesha for being so protective, and now he doesn’t let people take Khloe away from him. Sometimes his family will try to take her back to Shreveport — Williams is a student, after all — and he will throw a fit.

His Instagram account is filled with pictures of him holding Khloe close and proud pictures of her on Halloween. There are videos of him kissing her repeatedly. He has a large tattoo of her name across his upper back.

Khloe helped him focus and realign his priorities. His world became about caring for her, and also caring so much about his craft on the football field that he could provide for her.

“I’ve seen him change from being that playful little boy to a man,” Andrea Williams said. “He was that playful little Greedy. ‘Y’all play too much, Greedy!’ But he had a kid and it kind of changed him. He did a whole 360.”

So, as much as Sunday’s move toward the pros was about his own dreams and his own pursuits of fortune, and of course that matters too, Sunday was about Khloe.

Lakesha Williams often talks about how football changed her family’s fortune in this world. Football helped bring both her sons to Power Five schools. It admittedly helped her change from her own partying ways. It helped her find a husband in their youth coach, Lonnie Bryant, who made his own sacrifices to help the family and provide when Lakesha had cancer.

Khloe is the next step in the Williams family, and the NFL Draft is the final step toward football elevating that family.

“If he gets hurt, he won’t be able to provide for his daughter,” Lakesha Williams said.

It was a scary and exciting night for Lakesha Williams. She reads the articles more than her son. She checks social media more than him, too. Sometimes she will send Williams stories about himself to read, and he just says no.

So when Williams announced to the world he was declaring for the Draft, and when it later became clear he was skipping the Fiesta Bowl, all of Lakesha’s excitement collided with the dread of what people would think.

She and Williams spoke with Ed Orgeron and Corey Raymond. Orgeron was disappointed but understood and supported them.

But then came those fan tweets about Williams quitting on his teammates and his selfishness. Then, linebacker and fellow first-round NFL prospect Devin White announced he was playing in the bowl, only giving fans more ammunition against Williams.

For Lakesha, at least, she saw the constant injuries across college football. She saw LSU defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko go out for the season with a bicep injury, cornerback Kristian Fulton get surgery on an ankle injury, and two LSU players tore their ACLs in the past five months.

If it were the College Football Playoff it might be different. It was a bowl game, though. It was a tough decision, but it wasn’t worth that slight chance he goes down.

Look back to Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith dropping in the draft after a Fiesta Bowl injury or Michigan tight end Jake Butt tearing his ACL in the Orange Bowl. Was it worth it?

“You see all the injuries and things that are happening, it’s not that he’s quitting on his team,” Lakesha said. “He gave them everything he had for three years. He sat on the sideline waving a towel cheering for everyone when he wasn’t playing.”

They looked into insurance policies, but their research showed those don’t always pay out as promised. She didn’t want Williams paying $50,000 for something that might not work out.

nstead, Lakesha spent every game day praying for her son to stay healthy. Just one gruesome injury could change his future. She begged for him to make it to December in one piece.

Williams made it to this week completely healthy. LSU isn’t playing for a championship. Williams made it this far, so close to a dream that took so much work to reach, that they couldn’t accept the risk for a game without a clear purpose.

Even Devin White, the heralded guy who made the opposite decision, went out of his way to defend Williams via Twitter.

“Very proud of the decision you made big bro, Baby K is very proud of the work you put in for LSU this season,” White wrote. “Prepare for your career, Big Unk gone finish the season off strong for y’all. Love Ya Bro.”

So, what’s next for Williams? He’ll likely go high in the NFL Draft and have tens of millions of dollars to his name overnight.

He’s not much of a spender for himself, family said, so they think he’ll probably buy a house for his mom or grandmother.

Williams definitely plans on setting up a trust fund for Khloe, though.

And that’s where the impact of this decision really lays. Yes, Greedy Williams’ life will change when he becomes an NFL player. His family member’s lives will change a good amount, too.

But Khloe Williams will grow up in a different world than her father. She won’t live on Illinois Street or Cooper Road with her parents scared to let her roam outside. She’ll grow up with all the options in the world in front of her.

“The sky is the limit for Khloe now,” Andrea Williams said.

Because football isn’t changing Khloe’s life. It’s giving her a completely new one.

Love all the cute stuff, but I have some real football talk that is on my mind.

Greedy was thought to be the top DB in the draft early on. Is that wrong? It may by because I did not follow the draft like I usually do. I just seem to remember that he was at--or near--the top of the list of DBs coming into the year.

Yet, several DBs were drafted ahead of him. I don't know about you guys, but my immediate question is "Why?"

I think most agree that he is very good in coverage. Is that debatable? I'm not sure. I really am asking. I just heard he is great in coverage. I did not study him.

I heard he avoided tackling. Late to the pile kind of guy. But, is that enough to drop the draft's best cover corner that much?

I saw a report that Grateful posted that addressed the shoulder injury and how he didn't visit teams.

That makes me say..............."Hmmmmmmm........" Is there a significant injury to his shoulder and is that why he dropped in the draft?

If so, did we draft damanged goods or will he be healed by TC?

Look, I don't want to hear from the agenda folks. I don't want to hear that everything is honky-dory or that it's doom and gloom.

Instead, I want to hear from football dudes like Tru, Dep, Pit, etc. I also want to hear from logical dudes like Clem, Cap, Purp, etc.

The question is: Is it possible that Greedy has a signifcant injury that might affect his availabilty and/or performance moving forward?

Can you be a football and logical dude or are they mutually exclusive?

I get that you are mocking me, but yes, you can be both.

I was just hoping for a good conversation. It's off to a roaring start.

Back in January, ESPN draft analysis Mel Kiper Jr. had Greedy projected as the No. 4 overall pick in his first mock draft, comparing the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder to Aqib Talib. But earlier this week, Kiper had him all the way down at No. 29 in his latest mock draft, explaining, "there are questions about his willingness to tackle and about his fluidity in coverage."

Greedy, who was a second-team Associated Press All-American last season and a first-team selection by some other organizations, has heard questions about his tackling from NFL teams as well.

But his answer is that he wasn't asked to tackle that much as a man-to-man corner in college.

"I'm not scared to tackle," Greedy said. "Look, I'm coming with full force. You put me in a Cover 2 zone, you'll see how I hit. Like I told the scouts, you put me in Cover 2 and that tight end runs in the zone, I'll show you what I can do."

Greedy said he'll play wherever teams want him to line up. But he does consider man-to-man coverage his strength -- as he displayed in a signature performance last season against Ole Miss receiver D.K. Metcalf, among others.

"Man-to-man, I can shut anybody down," said Greedy, who described his bravado as "who I am."

"A guy who can talk and back it up," Greedy said. "I've got that confidence in me. If I say it, I've got to do it, I've got to prove it. So it's been proven."

Greedy's 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine turned heads -- he tied for second among all cornerbacks with a time of 4.37 seconds. His other drills at LSU's pro day weren't quite as elite, but he said he was happy with his performance.

From what I read, Greedy did not go and work out for any teams, preferring to rest on his combine numbers and tape. I am sure that struck more than a few teams the wrong way.

Maybe he just dropped. If he can cover, he will help.

Honestly, i don't blame him for that. Didn't that guy from Wash U get injured a couple years ago at a private workout. He was supposed to go at the top of the draft and he fell a bunch to the Eagles.

He did do Position Drills at his pro-day

I seem to recall Deon Sanders wasn't the most eager tackler on the field and he did alright. I think when the coaches get ahold of him, Greedy will be just fine and learn to be a decent tackler. You can't teach speed and size. You can teach tackling. But even if he never becomes a decent tackler, if he shuts down his side and gets us a bunch of turnovers... that's fine. smile

One would think that Dorsey would be in depth when checking these guys out. I didn't hear anything negative about his health to come out of the combine.

Did he go through reps there? Did he come here for a visit?

I just read he didn't work out for teams privately.

It could be that he had surgery or needed rest to fix the shoulder problem and that is why he didn't workout for any teams.

This is the 1st I heard about the shoulder or the not working out for teams so I can't comment on those statements. The evaluations of Greedy that I was able to put together was (ie my compilation of the "draft experts" evaluations):

Very good coverage guy but gets a little grabby at times. Tackling is not his favorite thing to do.

Which Cb's were drafted ahead of Greedy (These evaluations are my opinions):

Personally, I had DeAndre Baker as my top rated corner. So I have no problem with him going before Greedy.

Rock Ya Sin had a great Senior Bowl and his stock really rose after that. I think he was over drafted. I see a good solid corner but nothing great developing out of him

Sean Bunting - I am not familiar with him but per the NFL.com evaluation: "He's a solid Day 3 prospect with CB4 potential." Which I think makes this an odd pick. There are several Cb that I would have taken before this guy.

Trayvon Mullen - This kid is very good, the criticism is that he didn't have a lot of interceptions. Same critique of Ward last year. He and Greedy are very close in my mind and the decision between the 2 is a coin flip. As an weird FYI, he is 1st cousins with Lamar Jackson.

JoJuan Williams - I think he is an overdraft as well if you are drafting for a pure corner. He gives up a lot of big plays and isn't the fastest guy. What he is though is the biggest Cb out there. I saw numbers of 6'4 and 211# (don't know what the official combine numbers were). I suspect that the Patriots have something special planned for him. Is there a really tall Wr that they will need to cover? A TE that needs to be shut down? This kid might be perfectly suited for those roles. Do they want to play some weird hybrid defense? I will tell you that if you try to match JoJuan up on somebody like Antonio Brown all day that he'll put up 300 yards

Does that help at all Vers?

Am I perfect? No
Am I trying to be a better person?
