Browns sign free agent Ernster as emergency punter By Len Pasquarelli ESPN.com (Archive) Updated: September 8, 2007, 7:38 PM ET Comment Email Print In a move that suggests that standout punter Dave Zastudil has not sufficiently recovered from a back injury to kick in Sunday's season opener, the Cleveland Browns signed free agent Paul Ernster to the roster Saturday.
Zastudil, 28, suffered a mild back strain earlier in the week and was limited in practices as the Browns prepared for their matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Zastudil remained optimistic he would be able to face the Browns' archrivals, but the addition of Ernster may be an indication that he still needs more recovery time.
Coach Romeo Crennel said that he would wait until the last minute to make a determination on Zastudil's status. The Browns signed Ernster, one of five free agent punters who worked out for coaches and team officials this week, before the Saturday deadline for adding players and having them eligible for Sunday's game.
A five-year veteran, Zastudil is coming off his best season, and enjoyed a strong training camp and preseason. The former University of Ohio standout established new career bests for gross average (44.0 yards) and net average (38.4 yards) in 2006.
His net average ranked as the sixth-best in the league last season, and Zastudil also had 28 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
For his career, Zastudil has a gross average of 42.1 yards and a net average of 37.6 yards. He has 117 punts inside the 20-yard line and only 39 touchbacks. Zastudil spent the first four seasons of his career with the Baltimore Ravens before signing with the Browns in 2006 as an unrestricted free agent.
Ernster, 25, was a seventh-round choice of the Denver Broncos in 2005. He appeared in one game as a rookie, then in all 16 games in 2006, posting a 41.7-yard gross average and a net average of 36.6 yards. He also handled the kickoff chores for the Broncos and demonstrated his leg strength by notching 19 touchbacks.
A former Northern Arizona standout, Ernster lost his job in Denver when the Broncos signed three-time Pro Bowl punter Todd Sauerbrun as an unrestricted free agent this spring. He was waived in the final roster cutdown to the 53-player limit.

Demario Minter sucks, not only was he just as injury prone as Lee Suggs was but in Pre-Season and in Camp practices he looked like a Fish out of the water. Heck at least when Suggs was healthy he was one heck of a RB whereas Minter has done absolutely nothing but get hurt the whole time he was here.

They did? I'm pretty sure Bodden was always healthy until last year...? And even if I'm wrong, are u implying we should collect injury prone players?

Disagree. Actually many thought Bodden was pretty good... at ST's atleast. He was a beast always getting downfield super fast and making the play.
Hopefully Ernster does us well and Zast isnt out if any time at all.

Man this post got seriously hijacked lol. Leigh Bodden when he got injured was in actual games that counted Minter on the other hand would get injured wiping his butt after taking a crap. I had high hopes for Minter when we drafted him thought he might be a late round steal but that never came to fruition and i'm hugely dissapointed in his lack of showing any glimpse of the talent he had when he was in college.

Good question, I guess we will have to wait and see. I suppose Zast could still hold right?
But that would take up an extra roster spot... so I dunno...
I'd like to see Cribbs learn to hold, he could be very dangerous for fakes with his running and throwing ability.

But we never waived Bodden in favor of another DB.
I know Minter's one of your boys, but if he wanted him we would have kept him. He's eligible for the practice squad and we didn't think enough of him to put him there.
It may be hard to hear, but the people in charge do not think he has what it takes to be on our team.

This is the guy that Denver hired to replace Sauerbrun (sp?).
Ernster did such a great job in Denver that they (Denver) brought Sauerbrun back.

Yeah, I don't understand why we didn't go with Gardocki especially if this is only for a game or 2. I mean he's punted in CBS before so he knows how the winds react and he's worked with Pontbraind before and forgive me if i'm wrong but wasn't he our holder for FGs and EXPs when he was here before?, if so then he would have some rapport with Dawson.

The snap was perfect and he simply let it slip through his hands.
I thought the kickers were supposed to have footballs that were scuffed up so the would not be slippery?
Sad part is, his screwup set a tone for the game and the Browns kept digging the hole deeper as the game progressed.
