Equally as gross. a 4.8 safety isn't going to do anything in this league but hope to be a serviceable starter but likely a backup and special teams player.

He had a bad hamstring. He doesn't look slow on film.

Bama Pro Day Article Link

Recurring hamstring issues might be a bigger concern than the time. Hopefully it was just a matter of overtraining while trying to impress for the predraft dog and pony show. He shouldn't have to run a 40 or 3-cone ever again.

Now we get to see how he plays football.

That makes me feel a lot better. 4.65 and maybe a hammy issue is something I can work with.

4.7 :40 is not a bad time for a LB.
Schobert and Kirksey, both ran the :40 in the 4.7 range.

Right, but we just saw two linebackers for top 10 who ran 4.4. My point ins always bringing up their athletic traits is not to say they cannot become good players, but their high end upside is limited by their lower athleticism. Everything is relative though, if lets say Wilson was 25lbs heavier than white or Bush it would be a different story.

At the end of the day defense is about running and hitting. If they can't run though, it doesn't matter if they can hit.

I remember instantly loving the Avery pick last season after the draft. I hope I feel the same about these guys

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I think that you have unrealistic expectations for a 5th round LB.

The two first round players are an exception ... not the rule.

I also think he is putting too much emphasis on 40 times and equating those times to athleticism.

For linebackers, perhaps, but not DB's if they can't run they can only hope to have a ceiling of "good".

The combine is a useful tool, elite 3 cone guys tend to be the best prospects as well. When guys choose to not do those drills and run a 4.7 you have to question why.

Alot of people think Wilson should have stayed another year to get more experience, but I think under these circumstances (he sitting behind our current starters), he'll have time to learn things at a pro level.

I'm expecting good things from Wilson.

Near half of those highlights were specials teams and offense. Hopefully he can be a specials teams ace and work his way to potential starter. I am not holding my breath.

He is 6'1 240#

Can he be that S/Lb hybrid so many teams are looking for?
His strength is in pass defense

That's what I'm thinking too. It was mentioned that his DC at Alabama is our new DL coach. While it's not his group, I wouldn't be surprised if, based on past relationship, Lupoi is able to help him assimilate to the NFL. A point Vers has raised, the Browns aren't just addressing offense and defense in the draft, but special teams as well. I suspect that both the new LB and maybe Redwine as well, were drafted not just for their positions, but for their potential on ST.

Yeah I am pouring over some games now, he does a really nice job flipping his hips for a guy his size. Very instinctual in coverage, really did a nice job taking throwing lanes away form Murray against Oklahoma.

Non existent in run support. Bama was blowing everyone out though, so hard to really tell since they were passing so much.

Drew Lock, yuck.

Murray make some ridiculous throws too, but also some really terrible decisions that should have been turnovers.

He plays a lot faster than 4.7 from what I can see and quite frankly that is all that matters. Seems physical enough and real good ball skills. I see more than ST for Mack. He may start there, but I envision him and Taki getting into the LB rotation at some point.

I had that thought about Lock, too watching the Missouri game for Wilson. Looked way too much like Weeden that week. Skipping easy passes off the ground 10 feet in front of his target for no apparent reason.

Alabama's D had him pretty shook.

It's hard to find tackles for Wilson at times when he's dropping into coverage and the DTs and rush linebackers are feasting in the backfield.

Jester...at this time, I could see Mack Wilson as some kind of hybrid LB/Safety. But, Wilson just turned 21 in Feb, so he could continue to grow into a LBer's body.

I like Wilson's LB instincts..he plays with aggression and that can be infectious to a defensive unit. Hopefully Wilks can find playing time for MackW.

It would be nice to have a defensive player on our team that can cover a tight end. Man. TE position kills us.

Schobert is good in coverage, but our real problem has been our strong safeties were absolutely dreadful in coverage. Not sure if Burnett is much of an improvement. Perhaps the guy we got from KC [forgot his name] can play on more obvious passing downs in our nickel and dime packages.

I believe his name is Eric Murray. Considering how bad the Chiefs played defense I’m not holding my breath

I haven't read much of this thread, but Saban desperately tried to get this guy to stay at Alabama.

https://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/sto...ion/2929096002/

1. He didn't think he'd be drafted very high if he left.
2. He thought if he stayed one more year he could develop into a first round pick.

Hopefully Wilson can continue his growth in the NFL while not getting many reps on defense.

The good thing is that growth can happen in practice and in the classroom.

Some people are wanting him bigger. I don't think I do, at 6'1" and 240# I'd say that's about as big as he need to get.

The Steelers traded up for a 5'11 linebacker.

I can think of exactly ONE 5'11 linebacker off the top of my head that had success in the NFL.

6'1 is fine.

I was thinking of Zach Thomas, but London Fletcher is a good answer as well.

That is two dudes in past 30 years 5'11 and under who turned into great players at ILB. Not a great precedent.

And he doesn't really play like any of those guys. Not in the sense that he's not good like them, but they were more based on smarts and grit, and he's more of a speed guy.

Former USFL LB who played well for the Saints comes to mind. I think his name was Sam Mills. He may have only been about 5'9"

What strikes me as interesting is:

"Taki was taken early"? "Wilson was a steal because he was graded higher"?

The first round the mocks and analysts are usually close as what is a first rounder. They may get the order wrong in the top ten but it is usually close.

After the first round. that is where GM's and the scouting staffs see things differently.

Everybody says BPA. Yet when you see who gets drafted and where it is funny how the picks match the needs.

Wilson and Taki are on the team now. What happens next is up to them. Once people start flying around and the playbook gets learned the coaches can tell who is going places and who is not.

Biggest difference I see between Mack Wilson and Devin Bush is that one was utilized more aggressively and hyped more by his coach.

I expected to see more of a speed difference, but it wasn't really noticeable. Bush might be a little more straightline and Wilson a bit more fluid. Bush might trigger more quickly, but he appears to have been coached/asked to play more aggressively.

Hard to really do an apples to apples comparison because they were asked to do different things.

Bush might bring more thump, but Wilson wasn't really utilized downhill.

Bush was kind of schemed more highlights. He was moved around and had blitzes called for him. He did take advantage of the opportunities he was given. Wilson wasn't given as many (or many at all).

I think Saban wanted to give a young secondary as much help as possible and thought the rest of the front 7 could handle the running game (which looks fairly astute.) Michigan had an experienced secondary and could better afford to take chances in front of it.

I'm big on context and the big picture, though. I may be slightly optimistic towards what Wilson can do because there is some projection due to his not being asked to do a whole lot of repetitions of the things you'd like to see.

Re-Watching Bush more or less be a non-factor against Ohio State makes me think we walked away with the better deal between these two. 3 picks in the 1st 3 rounds for Bush vs 1 pick in the 5th for Mack Wilson? Give me the latter every time.

Is Bush possibly, mayhap probably, better? Sure, but they look fairly comparable. Wilson might have more upside due to his fluidity in a passing focused league. Bush is somewhat stiff hipped. Bush's closest comp on mockdraftable is Ernie Sims and I can sort of see that.

Wilson does have a lot to still prove. I'm curious to see what all we ask him to do.

I think the transition from Saban to Freddie could be good for him personality-wise. Yes, Wilson's a millenial and that "attitude" may rub some people the wrong way. NFL personnel people better get used to it, though, as there are only going to be more of them moving forward.

I get the sense that many of the Browns draft picks were as much focused on ST as on D. Wilson, Redwine, and Takitaki will all be at the back end of the rotations at their various positions, but will all have the opportunity to make their presence felt on ST. And of course Seibert has the chance to beat out the incumbent Joseph to make 4 of this years picks ST oriented.

Since most were later round picks I think it's only right to focus on ST's and developing players.

Once your roster becomes solid, and ours has, the odds of 4rth through 7th round picks actually making your roster are pretty slim. What you have to keep in mind is that in three and four years from now, you'll have a lot of top talent needing new contracts.

The best way to address that is to have mid round draft picks in the pipeline developing in hopes of being able to take over some of those roster spots. Once you have a stable system and coaching staff in place, it's much easier to draft and develop players because of that consistency.

It's my hope that's what we're working our way towards.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I didn't study this draft, but I agree w/you about the focus being on improving the special teams. Seems like most of these guys can do just that.

Also..........and I have no real knowledge of this, but from what little I've watched and read, I kinda like Wilson more than Rikki-Tikki-Tavi.

I have all the faith in Wilson. Not saying he's gonna be a pro bowler, or future hall of famer, but he's gonna be an important piece to this team, via defense and special teams. Whenever he gets a shot on defense, I think he'll make the best of his opportunities.

Can't wait.
