I'd love to read a case study of the underlying mechanics of how this happened.

And I don't mean "This leader did this...or that president passed that..."

I mean what was the underlying flaw in their political system.

I'm sure there will be many political science doctoral dissertations on it.

The flaw here is they are one of the most oil rich nations and their population saw no sign of that in their society. Corruption can cause the breakdown in social norms.

Papua New Guinea has one of the largest gold mines in the world. The Porgera Gold Mine. It’s pulled over 16 million ounces of gold (about $20billion) and almost 3 million ounces of silver out of the ground. Yet 40% of the country’s people live in abject poverty. Real poverty, tarp roofed shack level poverty. Mud road poverty. No hospitals or schools poverty. The mine has a history of human rights abuses and negative environmental impact. Yet it goes unchecked. The people have had their native land and it’s resources, it’s riches, ‘taken’ from them by private industry.
It’s unfettered capitalism at its darkest.
