Songs have been written about anything and everything.

Some can make you feel good. Some make you blue. They can inspire. They can be humorous. They can tell stories.
They can be poetic.

Feel free to post a song that for whatever reason captured you.

They sat together in the park
As the evening sky grew dark
She looked at him and he felt a spark
Tingle to his bones
'Twas then he felt alone
And wished that he'd gone straight
And watched out for a simple twist of fate

They walked along by the old canal
A little confused, I remember well
And stopped into a strange hotel
With a neon burnin' bright
He felt the heat of the night
Hit him like a freight train
Moving with a simple twist of fate

A saxophone someplace far-off played
As she was walkin' on by the arcade
As the light bust through a beat-up shade
Where he was waking up
She dropped a coin into the cup
Of a blind man at the gate
And forgot about a simple twist of fate

He woke up, the room was bare
He didn't see her anywhere
He told himself he didn't care
Pushed the window open wide
Felt an emptiness inside
To which he just could not relate
Brought on by a simple twist of fate

He hears the ticking of the clocks
And walks along with a parrot that talks
Hunts her down by the waterfront docks
Where the sailors all come in
Maybe she'll pick him out again
How long must he wait?
One more time, for a simple twist of fate

People tell me it's a sin
To know and feel too much within
I still believe she was my twin
But I lost the ring
She was born in spring
But I was born too late
Blame it on a simple twist of fate

Telegraph Road
Dire Straits

A long time ago came a man on a track
Walking thirty miles with a sack on his back
And he put down his load where he thought it was the best
Made a home in the wilderness

He built a cabin and a winter store
And he ploughed up the ground by the cold lake shore
And the other travellers came walking down the track
And they never went further, no, they never went back

Then came the churches, then came the schools
Then came the lawyers, then came the rules
Then came the trains and the trucks with their load
And the dirty old track was the Telegraph Road

Then came the mines, then came the ore
Then there was the hard times, then there was a war
Telegraph sang a song about the world outside
Telegraph Road got so deep and so wide
Like a rolling river

And my radio says tonight it's gonna freeze
People driving home from the factories
There's six lanes of traffic
Three lanes moving slow

I used to like to go to work but they shut it down
I've got a right to go to work but there's no work here to be found
Yes, and they say we're gonna have to pay what's owed
We're gonna have to reap from some seed that's been sowed

And the birds up on the wires and the telegraph poles
They can always fly away from this rain and this cold
You can hear them singing out their telegraph code
All the way down the Telegraph Road

Well, I'd sooner forget, but I remember those nights
Yeah, life was just a bet on a race between the lights
You had your hand on my shoulder, had your hand in my hair
Now you act a little colder like you don't seem to care

But just believe in me baby and I'll take you away
From out of this darkness and into the day
From these rivers of headlights, these rivers of rain
From the anger that lives on the streets with these names
'Cause I've run every red light on memory lane
I've seen desperation explode into flames
And I don't wanna see it again

From all of these signs saying "sorry but we're closed"
All the way down the Telegraph Road

When we were waiting for Edwin to join our family ( he is adopted from Guatemala) I heard this song on the radio and cried.

Somewhere Out There - From An American Tale: Fievel Goes West

Somewhere out there,
Beneath the pale moonlight,
Someone's thinking of me,
And loving me tonight.

Somewhere out there,
Someone's saying a prayer,
That we'll find one another,
In that big somewhere out there.

And even though I know how very far apart we are,
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star,
And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby,
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky!

Somewhere out there,
If love can see us through,
Then we'll be together,
Somewhere out there,
Out where dreams
Come true...

That's a beautiful thing. Sometimes words just hit your heart.

I spent about six months in Guatemala. Loved the experience and the people.

bone...
Stealing my song from the ‘cover tune’ thread a while back I see. wink

How’s this...

The leaves seen through my window pane
Remind me that it's time to move my life again
November sun is felt by none
A chilly breeze has blown my thoughts to what's to come
A cup of warm coffee, some vitamin C
A bowl for the cat, a bowl for the dog, a bowl for me
Choose my bluest tape and unlock my car
An honest tune with a lingering lead has taken me this far

On the edge of the porch in the warm evening night
Throwing the bone for the dog I see two passing lights
Well, I wonder where that driver's bound
Is there someone, somewhere, someway out there that I've not found
A touch of smoke ain't what it seems
Dust and sunshine can also make my eyes look mean
But there's a brown cat sleeping through this day's show
Toppin' off the woodpile, breathing slow

‘Driving Song’ by Widespread Panic
Not a lot of lyrics but it paints a picture and is great song.

I agree, the country and people are beautiful. Where were you in Guatemala? We stayed in Antigua. Edwin was born in Retalhuleu on the Pacific coast.

Then there’s this...

Look for a while at the china cat sunflower
Proud walking jingle in the midnight sun
Copperdome bodhi drip a silver kimono
Like a crazy quilt star gown through a dream night wind

Crazy cat peekin' through a lace bandanna
Like a one-eyed cheshire, like a diamond-eye jack
A leaf of all colors plays a golden-string fiddle
To a double-e waterfall over my back

Comic book colors on a violin river cryin' leonardo
Words from out a silk trombone
I rang a silent bell, beneath a shower of pearls
In the eagle-winged palace of the queen chinee

So there!! Take that English language and shove it!! laugh

For all the great songs there sure has been some bad ones as well.

Last addition. I promise.
I wish more took it to heart....

I've seen Jesus play with flames in a lake of fire that I was standing in
Met the devil in Seattle and spent 9 months inside the lion's den
Met Buddha yet another time and he showed me a glowing light within
But I swear that God is there every time I glare in the eyes of my best friend
Says my son it's all been done and someday your gonna wake up old and gray
So go and try to have some fun showing warmth to everyone
You meet and greet and cheat along the way
There's a gateway in our mind that leads somewhere out there beyond this plane
Where reptile aliens made of light cut you open and pull out all your pain
Tell me how you make illegal something that we all make in our brain
Some say you might go crazy but then again it might make you go sane
Every time I take a look inside inside that old and fabled book
I'm blinded and reminded of the pain caused by some old man in the sky
Marijuana, LSD, Psilocybin, and DMT
They all changed the way I see
But love's the only thing that ever saved my life
So don't waste your mind on nursery rhymes
Or fairy tales of blood and wine
It's turtles all the way down the line
So to each their own til' we go home
To other realms our souls must roam
To and through the myth that we all call space and time

Port, add as many that pleases you.

Lyrics have always been a thing to me. I quote them like poems. I remember songs my father sang. Every word they never leave me. They just roll around in my mind.

This song has a feeling that holds on to me.

There's a house on my block that's abandoned and cold
The folks moved out of it a long time ago
And they took all their things and they never came back
It looks like it's haunted with the windows all cracked
Everyone calls it the house
The house where nobody lives

Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams, did they throw it away, did they know what it means?
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong?

Well, the paint is all cracked, it was peeled off of the wood
The papers were stacked on the porch where I stood
And the weeds had grown up just as high as the door
There were birds in the chimney and an old chest of drawers
Looks like no one will ever come back
To the house where nobody lives

Oh, and once it held laughter
Once it held dreams, did they throw it away, did they know what it means?
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong?

So if you find someone
Someone to have, someone to hold, don't trade it for silver
Oh, don't trade it for gold
'Cause I have all of life's treasures and they're fine and they're good
They remind me that houses are just made of wood
What makes a house grand, oh, it ain't the roof or the doors
If there's love in a house, it's a palace for sure
But without love it ain't nothin' but a house
A house where nobody lives
But without love
It ain't nothin' but a house, a house where nobody lives

I always thought this would be a great song at a wedding: Beginnings by Chicago:

[Verse 1]
When I'm with you, it doesn't matter where we are
Or what we're doing, I'm with you, that's all that matters
Time passes much too quickly when we're together laughing
I wish I could sing it to you, oh no
I wish I could sing it to you

[Chorus]
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Mostly I'm silent mmm silent la la la la la
Never think about words to say

[Verse 2]
When I kiss you, I feel a thousand different feelings
The color of chills all over my body
And when I feel them, I quickly try to decide which one
I should try to put into words, oh no
Try to put into words

[Chorus]
Mostly I'm silent silent la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la
Silent

[Verse 3]
Only the beginning of what I want to feel forever yeah
Oh no whoa yes
Only the beginning, only just the start
I've got to get you into my life
Got to get you next to me
Only the beginning, only just the start

I’m a big lyrics guy too. It’s part of what drew my to the Grateful Dead. They sang songs that told tales. Covering and writing cowboy songs. Doing the same with Americana standards that were long dead. Then they spun their own stories. Songs like Wharf Rat come to mind.
Lyrics are also why I didn’t ever find a real connection to Phish after Jerry died. Most of their songs are ‘China Cat Sunflower-esk’ in their meaning. I couldn’t connect to the band.
What ended up pulling me into Widespread Panic is they carried the Dead’s tradition of writing stories. Telling tales... and doing it to psychedelic music. Panic being much heavier and more southern in sound, but still in the tradition.

As a fellow dead head hard act to follow.

Like Dylan their songs can be taken as life lessons.

I once heard Tom Waits say "songs are interesting things you can do with air."

So much can be relayed in the lyrics of a song. A message wrapped in music.

There are many great musicians. There are few great song writers.

I always thought Bob Seger wrote great lyrics. I don't want to post them all the lyrics but some of the songs that come to mind are "Til It Shines", The Famous Final Scene", "Like a Rock", "Turn the Page" "night Moves" "Feel Like a Number"etc

Lots of songs to choose from.

If the lyrics of "a" song is something you feel strongly about hey, post it.

FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT

The days grow shorter and the nights are getting long
Feels like we're running out of time

Every day it seems much harder tellin' right from wrong
You got to read between the lines

Don't get discouraged, don't be afraid, we can
Make it through another day
Make it worth the price we pay

The Good Book says it's better to give than to receive
I do my best to do my part

Nothin' in my pockets I got nothin' up my sleeve
I keep my magic in my heart

Keep up your spirit, keep up your faith, baby
I am counting on you
You know what you've got to do

Fight the good fight every moment
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
It's your only way

All your life you've been waiting for your chance
Where you'll fit into the plan
But you're the master of your own destiny
So give and take the best that you can

You think a little more money will buy your soul some rest
You'd better think of something else instead

You're so afraid of being honest with yourself
You'd better take a look inside your head

Nothing is easy, nothing good is free
But I can tell you where to start
Take a look inside your heart
There's an answer in your heart

Fight the good fight every moment
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
Make it worth the price we pay

Good songs are like guidelines. This is one:

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home

"Revelation (Mother Earth)"

[Daisley - Osbourne - Rhoads]

Mother please forgive them
For they know not what they do
Looking back in history's books
It seems it's nothing new
Oh, let my mother live

Heaven is for heroes
And hell is full of fools
Stupidity, no will to live
They're breaking God's own rules
Please let my mother live

Father of all creation
I think we're all going wrong
The path they're taking
Seems to be breaking
And it won't take too long
Children of the future
Watching empires fall
Madness, the cup they drink from
Self destruction, the toll

I had a vision, l saw the world burn
And the seas had turned red
The sun had fallen, the final curtain
In the land of the dead
Mother, please show the children
Before it's too late
To fight each other, there's no one winning
We must fight all the hate

Round Here

Counting Crows

Step out the front door like a ghost
Into the fog where no one notices the
Contrast of white on white.
And in between the moon and you the angels
Get a better view of the crumbling
Difference between wrong and right.
I walk in the air, between the rain,
Through myself and back again where? I
Don't know
Maria says she's dying, through the door
I hear her crying why? I don't know
Round here we always stand up straight
Round here something radiates
Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand
She said she'd like to
Meet a boy who looks like Elvis.
She walks along the edge of where the ocean meets
The land just like she's
Walking on a wire in the circus.
She parks her car outside of my house
And takes her clothes off, says she's
Close to understanding Jesus.
She knows she's more than just a little misunderstood,
She has trouble acting
Normal when she's nervous.
Round here we're carving out our names
Round here we all look the same
Round here we talk just like lions, but we sacrifice like lambs
Round here she's slipping through my hands
Oh sleeping children better run like the wind,
Out of the lightning dream
Mama's little baby better get herself in out of the lightning
She says "it's only in my head."
She says "shh, I know it's only in my head."
But the girl on the car in the parking lot says
"man, you should try to take a
Shot. can't you see my walls are crumblin'"
Then she looks up at the building
And says she's thinkin' of jumping. she says
She's tired of life, she must be tired of something.
Round here she's always on my mind
Round here (hey man)i got lots of time
Round here we're never sent to bed early and nobody makes us wait
Round here we stay up very, very, very, very late.
I can't see nothing, nothing round here (oh)
Won't you catch me if I'm falling?
Won't you catch me if I'm falling?
Won't you catch me 'cause I'm falling down on you.
See I'm under the gun round here
Oh man I said I'm under the gun round here
And I can't see nothing, nothing round here.

Songwriters: Steve Bowman / David Lynn Bryson / Adam Fredric Duritz / Charles Thomas Gillingham / David A Janusko / Dan Ryan Jewett / Matthew Mark Malley / Christopher C Roldan

Sympathy for the Devil

The Rolling Stones

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul to waste

And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain

I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah

I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made

I shouted out
Who killed the Kennedys?
When after all
It was you and me

Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game, mm yeah

Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint

So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, mm yeah

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, mm yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, mm mean it, get down

Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Tell me baby, what's my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what's my name
I tell you one time, you're to blame
Oh, right
What's my name
Tell me, baby, what's my name
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name

Songwriters: Keith Richards / Mick Jagger

Counting Crows were in Reno a few months ago and I went with my daughter.

Really good show. Excellent musicians.

Lyrically I love their music.

"Anna Begins" has amazing lyrics.

Counting Crows are awesome I agree

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I Do
Paul Brandt

I've seen the storm clouds in your past
But rest assured 'cause you are safe at home at last
I rescued you, you rescued me and we're right where we should be
when we're together

I know the questions in your mind
But go ahead and ask me one more time
You'll find the answer's still the same
It won't change from day to day
for worse or better

Will I promise to be your best friend?
And am I here until the end?
Can I be sure I have been waiting for you?
And did I say my love is true?
Baby I will, I am, I can, I have, I do

I know the time will disappear
But this love we're building on will always be here
No way that this is sinking sand
On this solid rock we'll stand forever

Will I promise to be your best friend?
And am I here until the end?
Can I be sure I have been waiting for you?
And did I say my love is true?
Baby I will, I am, I can, I have, I do

I was there in late seventies.

Had my dog with me and a backpack. Lived in a tent and traveled through most of the country.

Landed in Belize city. Went inland through Belize to Tikal.

I graduated from college with a degrees in Anthropology.
Had a interest in the Mayan culture and went looking for ruins.

Lived in Livingston on the Caribbean coast. Went Lago Isabel, Chichicastenango, Huehuetenago, Atitlan. The lake around Atitlan was incredible beautiful. Climbed up to see an active volcano. Went to mercado's every weekend.

Loved the country.

"Ohio"

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

There will be no playoffs. Can’t play with who we have out there and compounding it with garbage playcalling and worse execution. We don’t have good skill players on offense period. Browns 20 - Bears 17.

That is a very difficult song for me to handle.

I graduated from Kent in 1971. I was there. There through the whole thing. I was near Franklin Hall had been arrested and put on a bus guarded by National Guard soldiers when the shots rang out.

All those years ago and I have a hard time listening to that song.

I've known a few guys who thought they were pretty smart
But you've got being right down to an art
You think you're a genius-you drive me up the wall
You're a regular original, a know-it-all
Oh-oo-oh, you think you're special
Oh-oo-oh, you think you're something else
Okay, so you're a rocket scientist

That don't impress me much
So you got the brain but have you got the touch
Don't get me wrong, yeah I think you're alright
But that won't keep me warm in the middle of the night
That don't impress me much

I never knew a guy who carried a mirror in his pocket
And a comb up his sleeve-just in case
And all that extra hold gel in your hair oughta lock it
'Cause Heaven forbid it should fall outta place
Oh-oo-oh, so you think you're something special
Oh-oo-oh, you think you're something else
Okay, so you're Brad Pitt

That don't impress me much
So you got the looks but have you got the touch
Don't get me wrong, yeah I think you're alright
But that won't keep me warm in the middle of the night
That don't impress me much

You're one of those guys who likes to shine his machine
You make me take off my shoes before you let me get in
I can't believe you kiss your car good night
C'mon baby tell me-you must be jokin', right!
Oh-oo-oh, so you think you're something special
Oh-oo-oh, you think you're something else
Okay, so you've got a car

That don't impress me much
So you got the moves but have you got the touch
Don't get me wrong, yeah I think you're alright
But that won't keep me warm in the middle of the night
That don't impress me much
You think you're cool but have you got the touch
Don't get me wrong, yeah I think you're alright
But that won't keep me warm on the long, cold, lonely night
That don't impress me much

Okay, so what do you think you're Elvis or something
Whatever
That don't impress me

The band: Brad
The song: "Arrakis"

"I was just wandering after love -
If I started falling anywhere around here...
'cause I swear that I saw it in the sky,
a comet -
A star flying high everywhere.
If you know me, know me, know you can show me.
Yes I know, if you want, move close to the sun.
And oh......
I feel that, too young, I know it's all wrong.
We walk through the fields without a care in the world.
If you know me, know me, know you can show me.
Yes I know, if you want, move close to the sun.
And oh......
All we are is all we are.
All we are is all we are."

This song must be mentioned.

Back in the day, Obie Benson and Al Cleveland collaborated on this song and tried to convince The Four Tops to record it. They refused because it was a protest song, as did Joan Baez. Marvin Gaye liked the song and wanted one of the groups he was producing to record it. But, he got part of the proceeds if he was the one to record it.

He talked to Motown's leader Barry Gordy about the song and Gordy told Marvin "why do you want to ruin your career?" Y'all getting this...........It was 1970 and protesting against bias and prejudice was still a huge thing.

Can you imagine what it was like for black artists back in the day? You know things are unjust, but you wanna make it and know that addressing such unfairness would probably kill your career.

That's powerful.

Here are the lyrics:

Quote:
What’s Going On
Marvin Gaye

Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today, eheh

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today, oh oh oh

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Yeah, what's going on
Ah, what's going on

In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on brother
Right on babe

Mother, mother, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply 'cause our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh oh oh

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
C'mon talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
Yeah, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on, ooh ooo ooo ooo
Right on baby
Right on baby

Melody Gardot was hit by a SUV while riding a bike. The accident nearly cost her life and left her permanently disabled.

Although personal for her the song apply's to many.

"Some Lessons"

Well I'm buckled up inside
It's a miracle that I'm alive
I do not think I can survive
On bread and wine alone
To think that I could have fallen
A centimeter to the left
Would not be here to see the sunset
Or have myself a time

Well why do the hands of time
So easily unwind

Some lessons we learn the hard way
Some lessons don't come easy
That's the price we have to pay
Some lessons we learn the hard way
They don't come right off and right easy
That's why they say some lessons learned we learn the hard way

Remember the sound of the pavement
World turned upside down
City streets unlined and empty
Not a soul around
Life goes away in a flash
Right before your eyes
If I think real hard well I reckon I've had some real good times

Well why do the hands of time
So easily unwind

Some lessons we learn the hard way
Some lessons don't come easy
That's the price we have to pay
Some lessons we learn the hard way
They don't come right off and right easy
That's why they say some lessons learned we learn the hard way

I don't blame you. National Guard was in over its head. The political climate wasn't good, there'd been some student uprising at KSU in the days before. Some little marine wannabes who weren't old enough to drink decided there would be blood.

That song was on the radio three weeks after the shootings. It hit hard, which isn't surprising.

Of all the songwriters Dylan occupies a unique position for quality and quantity. Dylan is a master wordsmith.
So many of his songs are poetic this is one of many but it stands out imo.

'Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm

And if I pass this way again, you can rest assured
I'll always do my best for her, on that I give my word
In a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm

Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved
Try imagining a place where it's always safe and warm
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail
Poisoned in the bushes an' blown out on the trail
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm

Suddenly I turned around and she was standin' there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm

Now there's a wall between us, somethin' there's been lost
I took too much for granted, I got my signals crossed
Just to think that it all began on an uneventful morn
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm
Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much, it's doom alone that counts
And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm

I've heard newborn babies wailin' like a mournin' dove
And old men with broken teeth stranded without love
Do I understand your question, man, is it hopeless and forlorn
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm

In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes
I bargained for salvation and she gave me a lethal dose
I offered up my innocence I got repaid with scorn
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm

Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country but I'm bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born
Come in, she said
I'll give ya shelter from the storm

I'm just a sentimental old sap. This song, by Kenny Chesney, has been going through my head a lot recently. The first part really applies to my 31 year old son.....but the second part really applies to my graduating daughter.

There Goes My Life - Kenny Chesney:

All he could think about was
I'm too young for this
Got my whole life ahead
Hell I'm just a kid myself
How 'm I gonna raise one

All he could see were his dreams
Goin' up in smoke
So much for ditchin' this town
And hangin' out on the coast
Oh well, those plans are long gone

And he said
"There goes my life
There goes my future, my everything
Might as well kiss it all goodbye
There goes my life"

A couple years of up all night and
Few thousand diapers later
That mistake he thought he made
Covers up the refrigerator
Oh yea, he loves that little girl

Mamma's waitin' to tuck her in
As she fumbles up those stairs
She smiles back at him
Draggin' that teddy bear, sleep tight
Blue eyes and bouncin' curls

He smiles
"There goes my life
There goes my future, my everything
I love you Daddy, good night
There goes my life"

She had that Honda loaded down
With Abercrombie clothes
And fifteen pairs of shoes
And his American Express

He checked the oil, slammed the hood
Said, "You're good to go"
She hugged 'em both
And headed off to the West Coast

And he cried
"There goes my life
There goes my future, my everything
I love you, Baby, goodbye"

There goes my life

There goes my life
Baby goodbye
Baby goodbye
There goes my life

My son is doing great in life. My daughter will be heading off to college before long. I don't know what it is - is it because she's my youngest? Because she's a daughter? Because my wife and I will be empty nesters within months? I'm really struggling. Glad for my son, glad for my daughter, yet at the same time, with Sooga taking off.................I worry. A lot.

Dang - I didn't know being a parent would be this tough - when it's time to let go. Had no problem with my son - sending him off, etc. I guess it's just different with a daughter?

You get sentimental with age.

It's weird something out of nowhere just sets you off.

Music for sure. Lyrics for sure.

On the Blues thread I posted a song by Robert Kidney called "Rosalee."

I listened to that song and watched that video and tears came pouring.

It just hit me out of nowhere for no real reason. Then as I thought about it; I came to realize that it was the passage of time. And how quickly your youth fades.

Empty nest. I get that. I am fortunate to live with my daughter, her husband and my two grandsons. It is like being a Dad all over again.

Bruce Springsteen gets little props on this site, which is strange because we have a lot of blue-collar types here.

I know this is sacrilege... I never found his music compelling. His lyrics were tropes... we got it, the mill closed, (insert male name) lost his job and (insert female name) are running off on his motorcycle, her dad won’t understand...blah.
He and John Cougar Mellencamp, or John Mellencamp, or John Cougar, or JCM whatever he’s going by now are both in that category for me.
To each their own.

I just don't think that Springsteen is a particularly talented vocalist. Quite the contrary, in fact.

I know that some people really love his music. I would rather listen to paint peeling off the walls.

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.

Not a fan. Not on a playlist. Don't have a cd.

But I saw him live once and he puts on a hell of a show.

Some of his stuff is ok.

The Boss might not have the best voice, but this thread is about song lyrics and he wrote some very good songs that appeal to a lot of hard-working folks who have faced tough times due the collapse of industry in the NE and The Rustbelt.
