WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top U.S. defense official has presented an updated military plan to President Donald Trump's administration that envisions sending up to 120,000 troops to the Middle East should Iran attack American forces or accelerate work on nuclear weapons, the New York Times reported on Monday.

Citing unnamed administration officials, the Times said Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan presented the plan at a meeting of Trump's top security aides on Thursday.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the report.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Pentagon declined to comment.

Tensions between Iran and the United States have intensified since Trump pulled out of a 2015 international deal to curb Iran's nuclear activities and imposed increasingly strict sanctions on Tehran.

Trump wants to force Tehran to agree to a broader arms control accord and has sent an aircraft carrier and B-52 bombers to the Gulf in a show of force against what U.S. officials have said are threats to U.S. troops in the region.

Iran has said the U.S. is engaging in "psychological warfare," called the U.S. military presence "a target" rather than a threat and said it will not allow its oil exports to be halted.

The Times said among those attending the Thursday meeting were Trump's national security adviser John Bolton, CIA Director Gina Haspel, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford.

Several plans were detailed, the Times said, and "the uppermost option called for deploying 120,000 troops, which would take weeks or months to complete."

Trump was asked in a presser today about sending 120,000 troops and he replied, I hadn't heard that, who is reporting it?

When told it was the NY Times, he shook his head and said, "The NY Times is fake news and if I were sending troops to Iran, it would be a hell of a lot more that 120,000!"

I have to admit, I'm less worried about a war with Iran than I am about WW3 starting with all the alt-right fascist nationalist leaders coming to power in so many places with Putin's help.

I think trump is looking for any reason to stay in power. This could be nothing. It could be big.

Being honest, I have no problem with a war in Iran. They've been asking for that since the 70's. I'm actually surprised it hasn't already happened.

This is not saying I want our troops there, but I think it is a question of now or later but not never, as long as the theocracy rules there.

Let's recap. We had a plan in place that was stopping Iran from furthering their nukes. Trump pulled out of that plan. So now Bolton says if Iran accelerates its work on nuclear weapons we will deploy 120,000 troops to the region.

Thanks. The link won't work for me unless I subscribe, and I'm not doing that. But, since you posted, I am going to assume Trump said that, is that correct? Or, from the headline, did he say "if it came to war"?

He said.... "I think it's fake news," he said at the White House before departing for Louisiana. "Now would I do that? Absolutely. But we have not planned for that. Hopefully we're not going to have to plan for that. And if we did that, we'd send a hell of a lot more troops than that."

But we both know that contingency plans are always drawn up and in place for all scenarios.

One thing to keep in mind is that Bolton was also an advocate of the war in Iraq.
