Ike Ibeabuchi !

- Contender for the undisputed heavyweight belt in the 90's.

This was before his mental illness doomed him.

I saw him knock out "defensive masters" like Chris Byrd and put up ridiculous punch count numbers and take punches from some of the biggest hitters of the time (David Tua).

Retired undefeated after losing his mind.

Never seen anything like it.

That has to be a difficult life to handle.

Life is a challenge enough without that kind conflict.

Regardless of all that, Bruce Jenner was a great athlete.

You can not accomplish what he did and be otherwise.

Anybody who wins the gold as a decathlete you have got to be great.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Gus bridged the gap of all species and is rightly the greatest athlete of all species ever.

He was a marvel to watch. Made Bo Jackson -in his prime - look like a human.

I'm not going to do a list.. but I will say that if the definition of "athlete" involves strength, endurance, balance, agility, hand/eye coordination, etc...

Then some of the greatest athletes I've ever seen are gymnasts.

I thought you were going to say skateboarders.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Pole vaulters are up there too.

If we're going back to raw strength, size, athletic ability, and being unbelievably skilled at their respective sport, Aleksandr Karelin should be in the running. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleksandr_Karelin

Quote:
Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Karelin (Russian: Александр Александрович Карелин; born 19 September 1967) is a retired Greco-Roman wrestler for the Soviet Union and Russia. Nicknamed the "Russian Bear",[2] "Russian King Kong",[3] "Alexander the Great" and "The Experiment", he is considered the greatest Greco-Roman wrestler of all time.[1][4][5] Karelin won gold medals at the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games under a different flag each time (Soviet Union, Unified Team and Russia respectively), and a silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games. His wrestling record is 887 wins and two losses.[6][7] Karelin was the national flag bearer at three consecutive Olympics: in 1988 for the Soviet Union, in 1992 for the Unified Team, and in 1996 for Russia.

There's even some American success in there as well. One of Karelin's two losses came in the gold metal match of the 2000 Olympics to Rulon Gardner (Gardner would later appear as one of the contestants on the weight-loss show 'The Biggest Loser'.)

They may be great athletes in the sense of having decent body composition and a great aerobic base, but swimming skill doesn't really apply much to other sports. Propelling the body through water is much different than pushing off the ground and moving the body through space.
