Wow... I didn't see that one coming.
I wonder what the rest of the story is.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

I get the feeling he did something he wasn't supposed to do. He was on an UDFA rookie contract, so this isn't exactly a cap maneuver.

Missing the first day of mini-camp is never good.
Thanks for the memories, Desmond!

My guess would be arriving late for camp, and not doing the things the team wanted him to do in between OTAs and MC.

One of the first things the coaching staff did after Hue and Haley were fired was bench Harrison. That says a lot.

Yeah. It was more about his conduct than his talent.

His lack of enough talent (and age of 26) afforded them to opportunity to cut ties Day 2 of minicamp.

You're not making any news. You're editorializing. He had character issues but raw talent was never a question.

He looked ok at the start of last year. I thought he was benched because of injury?

One of the first things the coaching staff did after Hue and Haley were fired was bench Harrison. That says a lot. About Hue and Haley? Or Harrison? Probably says more about Harrison than anything. However, Hue moving Joel Bitonio to left tackle for training camp is one of the stranger things Hue ever did and that's saying something. We need to get Joe Thomas some bionic knees, or have him be 10 years younger, or something. Did anything ever come from that 'Fountain of Youth' thread in the other subforum? I suppose we'll ride out with Robinson as long as we can and readdress the position if it's needed.

On CBD they said something pretty close to - "He had what was, TO HIM, a serious personal issue with someone close to him". Note the emphasis there. This is apparently what caused him to "miss his flight". There was no mention of a history of missing any team events.
Freddy did not sound happy about the "missed" flight.
Dude has talent, just needs to get his head right. Somewhere else.
I was just grooving into the idea of having TWO starting-Quality LT. Oh, well.

A ton of talent?
An undrafted free agent. Who was our best option at a position of major need. Who was sat down when we had a better option from a guy who had bounced around.
Baker gave an endorsement for Robinson.
Harrison had the right size, length, a decent feet. He got blown over by bull rushes. Showed lack of strength and mental toughness.
Off season his task was clear. Improve. Get stronger. Seize the opportunity.
Then he is late and misses a mandatory workout.
Adios yo yo. This is the NFL. Show you want a job or be gone.

Welp, I wonder if we bring in Jeremy Parnell or Ryan Shraeder?

I wonder what the rest of the story is. Only news I heard was Harrison didn't report on time and the reported excuse was he missed a flight.
Got to be more to this, imo.

I think our backup if something happens to Robinson might be Hubbard. If not Hubbard, maybe Bitonio.

Harrison's release made me reflect on the offensive line situation at this time (and during training camp) last year. How weird was it that we moved Bitonio to left tackle for much of the off-season and a week before the season starts we promote an undrafted rookie (from a small school) to starter? Really weird.
And then TJ Watt eats Harrison's lunch the first game.
I don't know if Greg Robinson is any good but he at least brings some stability.

My take on this is that Harrison was a better player than Bob Evans claims. I think he proved to be very raw, but he had some assets that are very desirable in a LT.
He had very good feet, long arms, and was good at getting to the second level. He needed to improve his technique and lower body strength.
I do not know the real reason for his release, but I strongly suspect that reasons other than his on-field ability and potential.

Being late didn't help anything, but not something that couldn't be overcome if there wasn't something else. Usually a coach might drop him to 4th team and make him work back up. I don't know if Harrison attended many of the voluntary stuff, but if I had to guess, weigh in is usually the first thing a player does when reporting. If he showed up half a day late and 20 lbs over his assigned reporting weight, that shows a lack of effort. New coaches also like to send a early message. This may have been the message. Again, just speculating as to the why's.

Yep, he has had issues w/accountability and maturity in the past. I would not be surprised if that was his undoing yet again. I don't agree w/the sausage man that it was a talent issue.

hrmph pfft. It's like, I remember watching wrestlemania, and chris lionheart Jericho was wrestling shawn micheals, I think, may have been another... (lol) oh geez,
Jericho out maneuvered, did more moves, had more charisma, was more into it, that day, and was just , all the better theme, walk in, really on fire, and had footwork, and skill, better execution,
If I need 3 yards, and I got King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd, on one side.. and Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Dame on the other side... I know how this is going to go, assuming it took place in a year in which they were all among the living.
But, Shawn Micheals was just a stronger guy, it wasn't even close, in an instant, he showed "Alpha Male" and dominated and it was over,
I read an article, outside of DT'ers, in the last couple days, and it emphasized on his (Harrisson's) inability to stop Bull rushes,
... Really that's all you're there for, you don't see major league hitters that can't hit a fastball up the middle?
All the teaching and technique in the world can't make "Mini Me" into Andre the Giant! Life vacuums, we're not all created equal, ... if you can't stop, I mean a bull rush is the easiest move for defensive ends, anyone in the league would be able to do it, if you can't stop that, how's it going to work out for the season?
I think the Browns have gone finesse over Brawn on the OL since 99, (who was the biggest Badazx, that comes to mind? Verba, Schaffer, LeCharles Bentley)
I miss the days when I think the Browns would have gone for one really tuff player over 3 fill in hopefuls, as a given, not the exception.
Does this move help the Browns beat the Steelers?
This move is probably not the end of the world.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

True. Joe Thomas was a master at his craft. That said, I think a lot of people underestimated his strength and athletic ability, especially earlier in his career. For example, he set the Wisconsin record in the shot put and discus.

From what i read, this lack of commitment and conduct goes back to last season. Missing meetings, not paying attention in meetings, stuff like that. Can't find the twitter post i saw all that on. Although Joe Thomas sounds off on it via the Twitter. I think this guy was on his last chance with this team, and missing the flight showed he blew it. He probably knew it was his last chance too, which makes clear that he wasn't mature enough to understand what a priority football should be for him. EDIT: Here's a link to an article explaining it https://footballmaven.io/browns/news/browns-release-ot-desmond-harrison-j7U6fxQUbUqyyKKrQpsiTw/

Thanks for posting the article. It goes along w/what I was saying and is a much different take than the down on the farm tweeter. Your article actually begins with... Despite his talent and athleticism, the Cleveland Browns reached their breaking point with Desmond Harrison after he was unable to get to minicamp on time after missing his flight. Harrison has had issues with fulfilling his responsibilities with the team and the team has officially cut bait.

You've ridiculed this writer several times on his lack of football knowledge. Funny how that works.
If Desmond had enough talent (or at minimum they thought he has starter upside) he'd still be here and the team would make excuses for him. Alas, he is not.

You don't think this could be Freddy setting the tone that players will have to hold up to their responsibilities? I suspect this writer is correct. Same type of thing Rappaport said. https://twitter.com/ProFootballTalk/status/1136373338819969025I can't find any other way to tag it than this. It's an exchange between ProFootballTalk and Ian Rapoport. Basically, Harrison is late all the time. Recently and in the past. This was probably the last straw. And Freddy wanted to make sure that this wasn't tolerated this year. Starter upside or not, he wasn't putting in the effort to be a starter, and they had enough (my theory)

You don't think this could be Freddy setting the tone that players will have to hold up to their responsibilities? I don't think he needs to be setting anything up, to be honest. I think that tone has already been established. With Baker, with Freddie, with other players, etc. going back to last year. I'm cautiously optimistic about Kitchens, but if there is one thing I believe he has established long ago, it was accountability. No example needs to be made at this point in time.
