I love how we have so many mature fans who seem fit to make food/fat jokes about our head coach...

Look man. I'm not saying fire him right now. I AM saying that it's his third year, get some w's or get a pink slip. I have seen NO improvement what so ever. Through any year. Can't stop the run, can't protect the QB, can't get pressure on the opposing qb........the list go's on.
Thought this year would be different and I am still expecting it to be. If it's not see ya Romeo.

Regardless of who started the thread, the organization is not enamored with Romeo. Why would they be. I don't like change any more than the next guy, but the team was not ready to start the season and that ultimately falls back on the coach. This loss was a team effort. IMO, unless something dramatic changes, Romeo will be fired as soon as his replacement is found - if not sooner. If a change is made, the team needs a proven leader to get things moving in the right direction. Since that person needs to be unemployed - the list is pretty short. IMO, Your comments about Marty are totally out of line with Bernie and Baab. Marty has his faults, but I'd take him over any up-and-comer anyone wants to throw out there. He is a legitimate/proven NFL head coach. Quote:

From a talent view, sure. I think most people had and continue to have questions (at least on some level) about Romeo and his staff.
Quote:
you guys are talking about bringing in Marty Schottenheimer without having any idea of what really goes on behind the scenes day-to-day in Berea.
Sometimes you don't have to "know" to know. Read between the lines, my friend. Romeo's hotseat has never been hotter.

I'll be happy as heck if Romeo can turn things around, but I'll be content to stay within that OTHER 10% for a while...

clutch, the debacle against Pitt was an aberration - we are not nearly that bad. And yeah, if we see no improvement from now until the end of the year, I'd say it's time for romeo to go. But not now. Wait 15 weeks to see what we have. As someone else said, by week 11 we'll know what romeo's future is.

I just don't think Romeo has "it". Whatever that is. I have seen enough of the guy to know that he has done his best but it just isn't quite good enough. I don't think we need to fire him during the season because in all reality an interim coach doesn't give us any better of a chance to win then Crennel. I just know that after this season we will be looking for a caoch.
I KNOW we have the talent but we just don't have a coach to kick that losing mentality.
As much as I hate to say it Cinci is a perfect example. Good team for years but just needed some direction. I know you probably know all this and i'm not telling you anything you don't know and i'm not trying to come off with an attitude but there is one thing I have noticed about some Browns fans.
Not really you but alot of Browns fans tend to hold on to something too long hoping that it will work out. Hell, look at all the Tim Couch comments that STILL get posted around here. Maybe i'm just not as forgiving. Or maybe my glass isn't half full or half empty, maybe it's like Greeny said on Mike and Mike. My glass is a slow drip and is cracked.
This isn't really directed at you just a bit of a rant.

Just a thought...
Anyone else wonder where we would have finished last year if Dilfer remained with the team? Not that he's any good, but he's a Pro Bowler compared to Frye.
I have to wonder if we could have run the ball any more effectively.
Why is this in the Romeo thread? Because Romeo stood by Carthon, which was why Dilfer demanded a trade.
Just some food for thought...

lol, it's been a wacky couple of days clutch. Don't worry, I rant all the time. Maybe he doesn't have "it" on the surface, I dunno for sure either way, but I think the next two months will tell the tale.

I totally agree with this.I really hate the thought of starting all over again but if we could bring back Marty that would be just fine. Romeo need to start "Coaching em up" or it wont be pretty around here.

I just hope we are respectable. Yes it has been a wacky couple of days, I get so tired of the media ripping us, having to work with Steeler fan's, my dad dog's me all the time for being a Browns fan, my son is a friggin Steelers fan (but he doesn't know any better) he just likes them because some my ex's family does, etc. Sheesh! Oh and I forgot, If the Browns lose to the Raiders then I have to listen to my ex because she is a Raiders fan.

Frye and Dilfer were very different QB's. Dilfer has the same issues as Anderson. They will flat out miss a wide open reciever.
For me watching Dilfer or Anderson is a challenge.

I know that, but Dilfer was a vet and his experience vs. DA's lack of experience really shows.
Trust me on this, watching him made me wanna scream as well...then I had to sit through last season.
Dilfer got off to a decent start before opposing D's figured out the Carthon O...though I doubt his good start would have continued no matter who was calling the offense. Still I think he's a better game manager than Frye or Anderson and quite frankly would have been a perfect bridge to Quinn at this point.
Just playing the "what if?" game.

Wasn't this supposed to be a five-year plan?
Why start over when we finally have the pieces in place?
And we have some weapons on offense, a franchise QB, a franchise LT, and a defensive core that is getting respectable. The FO came in, cleaned house, and started bringing in new guys that would be the foundation. We still have areas of need--but we are getting there in terms of a respectable roster. Once this happens, we can see how RAC does---but up until then, RAC and Savage should stay.
There is no point in abandoning a five-year plan in year three just because its not coming to fruition fast-enough. We've started to get the right guys to build with, so lets let it go through those five years. Thats two more seasons. And hopefully, the guys can grow together as a team. All coming into their prime together--then we can plug rookies into a well-defined team that will be competitive for years to come.

I don't know if Savage is the problem or Romeo. Savage has his fingerprints over a lot of what has happened. I wonder where the line between the two is.
What does he have his fingerprints on? Edwards, good WR when given the opportunity to catch balls, pulling guys like Lewis to our side, Wimbley and Peek, These are just a few guys that Savage has brought in to help turn this program around. When you dump a whole team when you come in its going to take more than 2 years to put together a competetive team.
I personally like RAC's poise on the sidelines. He has a good public image. We have no idea how manyu tables he's turning over behind the scenes. As mad as we get as fans, he gets angrier because he sees what they are capable of durring the week.
My post wasn't on who Savage has brought in but rather on how much is he meddling in decisions the Coach should make. This whole QB fiasco, and the firing and hiring of coaches last year may have more to do with Savage then Romeo. The fact is Romeo was not Savage's guy, even though he has always supported him publicly. Once heads do roll we may find out things aren't what they appear.

"Romeo needs to be dumped fairly early in this season for a reason. Lerner needs to see if a change of direction on the field has any impact on the attitude, play of Savages players. Romeo isn't the only one under Lerners microscope here.
So let me get this straight...so Lerner is this Mad Scientist and in his Rat Lab - he is to Blow the Browns up and test the players response to the blowup and chaos that comes with it. This will determine whether Savage the king rat gets to stay or not.
Geeze - I sure hope we don't get to 0-2...cause this one loss is killing me...lol
btw...you don't think shipping Frye out was a good enough wake up call for the players? Wait you've wanted RAC out wayyyy before this

Clearly wrong.
I like Anderson over chuck....no doubt.....and it looks like the people who count on this team do too.
As to changing my opinion on qb's 10 times a year....sorry man, you don't know what you are talking about. I have been pretty consistent with my opinion on the qbs ever since i joined this board.
If anything I would bet the majority would say if anything, my opinion hasn't changed enough.

Then how did Frye get the openning day start? Perhaps marking him as the backup reduces his trade value...but his trade value couldn't have been much after his openning day performace and replacement before halftime.

Frye got the start by default--he was the veteran. He's now gone because someone actually offered something for him.
He was ruined here anyway. Once we drafted Quinn, it was obvious his days were numbered. His confidence took a big hit last year, and after the drafting of Quinn--his time here was pretty much up. Anderson is a "lame-duck" incumbent. He will only serve to keep the seat warm until Quinn's ready. He is what we have left and he will start.

That has nothing to do with the opinion of others who responded.

Fire Romeo after one game, or three or six? Please. Bring back Schotty??? Hey!! Maybe Bernie can be OC and Mike Baab can be line coach!!!
Marty won more games last year with a rookie LT and a new QB than RAC has in over two years and has a proven track record. Hardly a Bernie or Baab in the coaching department.

And then Pit plays screenwriter and shows how much time he has to waste... WTF is that pit???
A shot in hell to make use of the talent that's been brought in. Because with the guy in charge now,I don't think we have one.
Quote:

No,most of us agreed we had the "talent" to be a team on the rise. That we are young, but as the young talent gets experienced "THEY CAN BE winners". Having the talent to win doesn't mean you have the coaching to win. That's two seperate issues.
After three drafts and FA signing periods, what possible indication have YOU seen that indicates RAC can be a winning head coach?
Quote:
Now, after a single game in which the first quarter gave us: a punter dropping the snap at the two yard line; a Frye INT into triple coverage, Jamal fumbling, all of which created a 17-0 hole that was virtually impossible for this young, still-fragile team to get out of.... you guys are talking about bringing in Marty Schottenheimer without having any idea of what really goes on behind the scenes day-to-day in Berea.
What we do know is that it's the coaches job to prepare their team. What we do know is the more talent you bring in,the more competative your team should be. Have you seen any of that on ANY LEVEL?

Fact is - both were on the trading blocks...but both were portrayed and probably deservedly so as underwhelming in preseason so their stock plummetted especially DA's.
Fact is the people in charge named Frye the starter pure and simple just like many of us viewing the "competition" stated would be the case. Not cause we are Fryebots or Frye fans cause we simply observed and he was the obvious choice.
That was another rediculous statement Peen what we decided on was who we would possibly keep as a backup...not a starter.

Well...I'm pretty sure the offensive line likes the second piece of crap better than the first.
The line didn't magically improve when Anderson got in there, he just got the ball out relatively on time.

So you think a Cowher-like guy is going to come into this midseason and install a new system with his own guys? I highly doubt it. In fact I'd be willing to bet the farm against it...
You obviously didn't read what I posted.
Marty's guy IS Chud! It's the perfect set up!
Chud IS running Marty's O. Marty is a three four guy. We run the three four. What's to change? Maybe AFTER the season he may change a few position coaches or maybe Granthom. But the personnel is already here for Martys Scheme. There won't be some "drastic, massive turnover".
Quote:
so even if RAC gets canned after the Bengals game, the team is going to finish out the season under either Chud or Grantham and unless that person shows great promise, the team would be under a new system next year anyway...
Marty wouldn't be a "new system". It would be a very similar system, just ran in a professional,NFL kinda way.
Quote:
This is what I think... you let RAC finish the season, honestly it will be obvious by about week 11 what his future looks like in Cleveland.. then you begin negotiating and soliciting interest from the Cowhers and Schottenheimers...
So if you can pull off a move to get Marty in here now,you ignore it and sacrifice yet ANOTHER season before you do it? Put us yet another year behind? I don't see the point in that at all.
Quote:
if one of them shows interest and is real close to taking a deal, then you let RAC go. I really don't want to let RAC go at this point and then play "take your chances" with some no-name coordinator from some other team or some highly successful college coach, unless it was a guy like Weiss... and no, I'm not trying to start a rumor... ... I'd rather keep RAC than do that.
That's exactly what I'm saying, only do it NOW if you can. If you can write a check big enough to get Marty in here at the bye,why wait yet another year to get the ball rolling?
The team that came on the field Sunday was NOT NFL ready to play. This was RAC's THIRD openning day. You'd think he could have put a team on the field that looked like they had some kind of clue as to how to play in the NFL.

Sorry Pit, I disagree. The plan was fine, the team was pumped up.. then let's look at the series of events after that...
First drive, very conservative, Shaffer gets overpowered, 3 and out... then the botched punt, fumbled by a guy who has been on the team exactly 1 day and won't be on the team the minute Zastudil is ready to punt again...
The defense makes a decent stand but on 3rd down, Ben completes pass to Ward in the back of the endzone, even though coverage on the play was pretty darn good..
Second possession, on 2nd and 9 Frye throws into triple coverage, INT.. Just Frye being Frye... Anderson could have done the exact same thing, who knows. The only way to POSSIBLY avoid this one was to have Quinn in... now did you want that? Defense makes very good redzone stand and forces FG..
Third possession the Browns move the ball to the Pitt 33 yard line, before KW gets hit with what I thought was a BS call.. then Frye holds the ball for 8 seconds and gets sacked... we punt... force a 3 and out, they punt back.
Fourth possession Lewis fumbles and they make big strike on first play for a TD....
So where is the lack of preparation? That our 1 day punter fumbled the ball? That Frye did what Frye does? That Lewis fumbles (which if you're curious happens once every 60 attempts over his career)? That Winslow got tangled up with big hair dude and called for interference on a throw that wasn't even to him? Or that our defense blew ONE coverage?
From that point on, it was all down hill... our offense is going to score about 17 points a game this year.... and we're down 17-0 in the first quarter?... of course whatever plan he had made was out the window at that point.
So if you look at the big picture, yea, I can understand why you would say that the Browns were not NFL ready... but when you break it down, incident by incident, which led to the disaster... tell me, what exactly could RAC have done differently? What would Cowher have done with the same personnel which might have prevented the onslaught?

Frye...not so accurate but moreso than DA, weaker arm, has the ability to improvise...but that can also lead to problems all their own.
Anderson...inaccurate but gets the ball out relatively on time and has a stronger arm so the D plays him more honestly.
I think the OL would agree, ever tried blocking for a guy like Frye? I have and it's not fun at all.
That's a very quick summary as I've gotta run to class like right now.

How many "incidents by incidents, game after game" will it take for you to see that this is a pattern, not a single game DC? That's the entire issue here. A team is a direct reflection of its leader. At least by late year two and year three. ANY time this team falls behind, they fall apart. It's the same old same old. Since most of us understand that at least we "have the talent to play to a competative level" why don't we? A bad play by our punter and a three and out, shouldn't put our team down for the count. But under this "leadership" that's about all it takes.

A couple of things here....You mentioned the botched punt. Zas got hurt on Monday in practice. We waited until Saturday to sign a punter. Think maybe we should have done something sooner? I don't know whose fault that is (FO or coaching staff) but somebody screwed up.
Second thing here....the Defense was put in a hole in the first half, no doubt. But the offense didn't let the Steelers march down the field almost unopposed to start the 2nd half. And I don't want to hear that they were tired. It was just the start of the 2nd half. If they were that tired that early perhaps we need to rethink our conditioning program. No, the Defense still cannot stop the run.
You say Frye did what Frye does. I have a differing opinion but let's go with your assumption. If Charlie did what Charlie does and YOU could see that why couldn't Romeo or Phil? Why didn't they get someone else in here? Now we're left with an INT machine, a rookie and a smart guy who can't throw.
You ask what Cowher would have done......We can only guess, but I gotta believe he would have demanded some personnel changes or at least planned a better way to hide our defiecencies.
That's why Rome is on the hotseat. And since the precedence has been set for the "quick hook" it wouldn't surprise me to see Romeo canned if we hit the bye week at less than 2-4. Which at last glance is not out of the realm of possibility.

If last sunday's preformance is repeated this Sunday, I doubt Romeo will have a job by monday morning. It would be one thing if this was just a random embarrassing loss but the Steelers have blown out the Browns in 4 of the 5 games coached by Crennel.

This thread was started by a guy who fell in love with Derek Anderson after the Chiefs game (and I did the same thing peen but I ain't that football-bright ), and changes his mind 10 times a year about the quarterback.
Clearly wrong.
I like Anderson over chuck....no doubt.....and it looks like the people who count on this team do too.
As to changing my opinion on qb's 10 times a year....sorry man, you don't know what you are talking about.
Uh, peen, I was exaggerating to make a point. Ok, you change your mind 7 times a year. How's that? And maybe it wasn't "love" with DA, but it was "infatuation" with his arm, pocket awareness and ability to get rid of the ball. And don't say it wasn't because I clearly remember you and I discussing it.

That was another rediculous statement Peen what we decided on was who we would possibly keep as a backup...not a starter.
Sorry man....you are clearly in the dark.
Quinn was THE STARTER the minute we drafted him.

One reason to fire Crennel is that during his tenure under Belicheck he never learned how to cheat.

I'm pretty sure that Savage and Crennel had stated coming into their current positions that this was going to be a 5 year plan of rebuilding this franchise---why would you have them fired after three when they are making headway in the personnel department, and are on the verge of having some success on the field? Oh yea, because this is Ctown and we want to change things up every few years.

For what reason?
Same reason the majority of the staff and brass do....he has more skill and upside.
The competition is normal...it is clear Romeo favored Frye....you even admit that.
Romeo made his choice...and it buried him my friend.
