1) If climate is a major consideration in where you want to live, and

2) You like it not too hot, not too cold,

3) You gotta look into:

(a 1950s postcard)

Located in northern California, right on the Pacific coast.

Eureka never gets warmer than 70 degrees or colder than 30 degrees. (only a few times a century)

That’s an incredibly narrow annual temperature range.

By contrast, here in Connecticut, for the next 3 months it will stay mainly in the miserably humid 80s & 90s. Several days will be 90+. Several nights will be 74+ (daytime lows). Every two or three years we see 100 degrees.

Better have decent air conditioning.

From now until mid-September, a comfortable, dry, 70 degree day will be a rare exception here.

Then starting December, we get ice storms here, often 10-20F degrees. Often below zero wind chills.

Sometimes below zero without the wind. Very dangerous.

Sometimes blizzards. (winter Nor’easters)

Today’s high in Eureka is 59F tonight’s low 49F.

Why do people retire to Arizona & Florida?

I moved to the Pacific NW for a reason. It’s been a week or so since our last rain. Might get a little tonight. Then we could go weeks and weeks without it. Dry, low humidity, sunny days abound until the fall months. A sprinkle here and there but nothing to cause reason to change outdoor plans. With that, I mowed last week for probably the last time until maybe September. Like many others I just let the grass go dormant and brown. Who cares. It’ll be green again all winter. No reason to spend money watering it... to then spend time and money mowing it. A few of my neighbors do. Most don’t.

Northern Cali is amazing. Picturesque. Great weather. Etc. Cost of living can be a bit of a pinch. It’s also a bit remote as there’s no major metropolitan areas. Redding is close-ish but offers little different than Eureka. The drive to the Bay is deceptively longer than just the miles as 101 is curvy and filled with RV traffic. If you can live with the remoteness and the expense... it’d be a great place to call home.

Thanks for the info Portland. You know I'm shootin' for Eureka.

Do you know the difference between 100F degrees and 10F degrees?

If you go outside in t-shirt and gym shorts, at 100 degrees you don’t die within an hour.

(Although I suppose if you were a long distance runner, you might survive 10 degrees for an hour by running. You’d still be very messed-up (massive frostbite))

Does Eureka mean I'd have to change my perceived Board political bent?

Oh I learned while living in Ohio that sunshine doesn’t equal warm. I’ll take my 45 degree overcast drizzle all winter over -8 degree sunshine.

Perceived? Or earned? wink
Won’t HAVE to change it, but you might find change happening as you expose yourself more to those with different political leanings. Or you might be the ‘get off my lawn’ red island in a blue town. laugh Personally I think you’ll be fine. It is in the ‘Green Triangle’. Just sit back, listen to the ocean, and smoke a fat bowl of Cali outdoor. Politics will seem far less important than just enjoying life.

Good luck on making this a reality.

I played an entire soccer game in HS when it was 8 degrees. We didn't get to go inside at halftime.. that's really the only time I felt cold was when we had to stop.. and I had on shorts and a long sleeve t-shirt under my game jersey...

Now I live in North Carolina.. and your description of the heat in Connecticut is pretty funny. Sounds a lot like May and October here. thumbsup

California liberal?

What?

Wait a minute there pardnur…

Wasn’t Ronald Reagan the gov of California?

Are there still people in prison on drug charges from the 80s?

(Or did Clinton and Obama pardon the last of the “life” sentences?)

Still a shame.

20 year-old kids going to prison for life for selling thirty hits of LSD to undercovers at rock concerts. (and even with a pardon, a lot of those didn’t get out until their 40s)

Much longer than many premeditated murderers.

One of the great injustices of the second half of the 20th century.

Whenever I think of the Pacific Northwest, all I can think of, is a bunch of terrible green trees everywhere, like you couldn't escape the forest, it's just everywhere, with fog, rain, and dreary fog and dreary rain, and that usually means a lot of bugs, like mosquitos.

I think, the problem of not getting any super cold, even for a few days a year in January would be boring pretty quick.

I think, one of the best things about having seasonal extremes is enjoying them while they last, because before long the season changes again, and then you don't have it anymore.

If it never gets warmer than 70, you can't swim in a pool, outside, very easily. If it never gets below 30, you can't enjoy snowfall very easily.

Sometimes the weather is bad, and I don't like it, but it'd be boring to never have it again.

If I wanted to retire somewhere for the weather, maybe I'd try Vegas in the winter time, or Arizona.

When I think of the pacific northwest, I think of my uncle, aunt, and 2 cousins. And how they hate and deride the midwest. And the south. And the east. And how, especially the aunt and uncle, and 1 cousin, denigrate the lack of 'fresh salmon'........as in "Oh, Turkey for thanksgiving? We prefer fresh smoked salmon."

We each have our individual preferences when it comes to the climate and topography of various regions of the globe and I won't share mine at this particular point in time because I don't believe one's personal opinions should speak for the masses.

The only thing I will add is that I think that the people you live with and one's own attitude regarding life mean a helluva lot more than the region in which you abode.

I agree. However, when I am looked down on by people from some other climate, topography, political position............I don't care for them. Uncle can take his millions and shove it where the sun don't shine as far as I'm concerned.

I've got nothing against any area of the u.s. My problem is with people that denigrate other places - etc.

Terrible green trees? I can’t... um... you mean vast verdant forests of evergreen. Amazing Sequoia trees as tall as buildings. Trees that have been around for ages and ages. Mountains carpeted with temperate rainforests that create oxygen and beauty for us all to enjoy.
And you see this as a bad thing?

As I stated above it rains during the winter. The summers are very dry. With that the mosquito issue you invented doesn’t exist. I’ve had in my 18 years of living here MAYBE as many bug bites total as I would after a night around a campfire in Ohio... while wearing OFF. Mosquitoes are a non issue.

Swimming is something you do in the Midwest on really hot days to escape the heat. No need for such escapes. If I chose to swim it’s warm enough to do that. Instead I have a hot tub. I use it nearly year round in the evenings. Without humidity to carry the heat, once it’s dark it gets cool. Evenings here are perfect for sleeping with the windows open.
No need to hide all summer in AC.

When I want snow I drive an hour. I can ski all year on Mt Hood. Yes, all year. Snow is easily found I just don’t have to wake up and scrape the crap off my windshield all winter.

Your assumptions of the PAC NW are misconstrued.

I don’t mean to come off as denigrating the Midwest. It’s just that I did it for 29 years and am completely over it. I’m glad I’m from the Midwest. West coasters are a little soft frankly. They never had to scrape their windows, shovel a driveway, sweat profusely while sitting still in the shade, hide in AC for weeks on end, etc. I’m thankful I did. It makes me that much more appreciative of where I am now.
To each their own. Some people love Florida. I couldn’t do it. Some people love Texas. Again, not for me. I’m glad people have different preferences or Oregon would be over run. Or Ohio would. Or...
Nothing wrong with liking where you live. Even if it’s across the street from where you were raised. Nothing wrong with having reasons to want out either.

... your uncle is right. The salmon is great. wink

When I think of California, I think of a burgeoning influx of illegal immigrants and the toll it has taken on the legal, educational, and medical resources of a state resulting in confiscatory income taxes, regulatory policies, and the exodus of businesses and the population that those businesses used to employ. Its becoming America's Venezuela.

I don’t have to belittle the weather in Ohio. I can open up my Facebook page and see everyone there complaining about it. Stating Ohio’s weather sucks isn’t belittling it. It’s fact. Lol.

Where did I belittle anyone in this post. I’ve pointed out what I like about where Rocky is thinking of moving and the general reasons he might like it as compared to where he currently is. He’s pointed out the reasons he’s looking to make a change. THROW LONG came in here and ran smack on the NW with his ill conceived ideas of what the NW offers. I told him facts.

Find something else to get bent about dude. Really.

I think that perhaps this thread is moving in a direction where it should be moved to the Political Forum.

I despise the thought of people shoving political prejudices down my throat in an every day conversation.

There's more to this story than I should post on a public forum.

I will say this - I agree. People are the most important.

But, I'm a loner. I don't have a single blood relative in New England. The only family contact I have is a sister and brother-in-law in Chicago and we're not very close. One visit a year is plenty.

I have a few casual friends. Very cursory. I've posted on this Board about my last close friend. A party buddy who moved to New Orleans for wielding work and died within a year from car accident during Hurricane Katrina.

It's all good. I keep very busy and I have a high tolerance to loneliness. (I never feel it)

I’ve spent most of the last four years in Central and Northern California, and Oregon. I loved all of it, such a beautiful part of the country with great weather. I’m just crazy over that coastline, it takes your breath away. I did just spend the Winter in Tucson, AZ, though, and I must say, that was awesome! I’ve been everywhere from Alaska to Key West doing my job, and I spend lengthy times at each location. There are so many great places to hang out all across the country, it’s all about individual preferences. I’ve been doing this for over a decade now and I’ve only been a couple places where I disliked the location and wouldn’t return.

I still love Ohio, but the current weather pattern is just pissing me off.

I see the name of a city named Eureka, and I think of the TV show starring Colin Ferguson and Salli Richardson (easily one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen.) I didn't realize a city named Eureka actually existed.

You can open facebook and see everybody complaining about everything, or open the newspaper and see it. Turn on the TV and see it, walk through a public place and hear it, some people are just never happy.

People retire to Florida because there is no income tax, the sales tax is around 6%, there is no tax on SS or other income. Look in to the California tax situation.

Hey Jules,

You really amazed me back in 2015 when you recognized one of the original posters from when the chat forums were in the official Cleveland Browns website.

You recognized “little brownie”.

From behind!

In a photo I took 20 years ago and casually posted in 2015.(a photo from 1999 - taken 15 years before that!)

A photo not very long after the internet and sports forums started.

Let me see if I can find that…

(considerably enlarged)

Do you know if little brownie is still around?

That tells me:

1) You know a lot of Browns fans. (you must have met him)
2) You’re very perceptive (to have noticed him in a photo a nobody like me posted with a bunch of other people in it)
3) You must have excellent visual memory. (to recognize him from behind 15 years later in a grainy photo)

Now how about using those God-given talents to tell the peoples how great I am (and don’t leave out the modest part)

Hey, somebody once told me this was Shepdawg, Can anyone positively ID him?

I never met him. I took the photo but had no clue who these people were. (I was walking through the parking lot with a disposable camera and beer or three)

I've been to Eureka a few times. I prefer the college town of Arcata just up the road. Although smaller...it feels livelier.

Eureka is a town that has seen better days. It has some beautiful old Queen Anne Victorians, but a lot of them have also seen better days or have been turned into businesses. It was once a lumber town, but that industry has now left. It became quite poor and desolate and of course being in the Humboldt area became more known for its weed and drugs. So, it has its fair share of hard drug casualties roaming the streets. But, then again...so does Portland, Seattle, San Francisco etc. The difference is, there just isn't a lot of money or a lot to do there in comparison to the bigger west coast cities. Also, it is an isolated part of Cali....6+ hours from San Francisco and 6+ hours from Portland.
