The draft is tonight at 7:00 and is on ESPN. Here is some draft news and takes.

I talked about Conley going to Utah earlier and that trade was made yesterday. Memphis got the 23rd overall pick in this year's draft for him.

That gives Memphis two first round picks, including the second overall.

Atlanta and Boston both have three first rounders and are looking to move up. The Knicks already rejected Atlanta's offer to move up to third overall.

The Cavs, Pelicans, Spurs, and Pistons all have two first round choices.

The Pelicans are interesting because they might be willing to trade the 4th overall pick that they got in the AD deal. I read where they wanted an established NBA player in return because they want to contend now. A name being mentioned is Bradley Beal. He's a damn good player and he would be a huge addition for NO.

The first three picks are pretty much set.

Zion to New Orleans
Morant to Memphis
Barrett to the Knicks.

A guy to watch after that is Darius Garland, the PG from Vandy. He got hurt last year, but has drawn comparisons to Damian Lillard because he can score and has the handle.

Teams like the Celtics, Bulls, Suns, and Timberwolves might move up to 4 to get him because they need a PG. I don't know if the Suns have the assets to make such a move, though. I am not sure where Garland will go if the Pelicans don't trade that pick, because they don't need a PG and neither do the Cavs.

Some of the other top players after those four guys are Hunter from UVA, Culver from Texas Tech, Coby White from North Carolina. I mentioned the first two dudes in a previous post as possible fits for the Cavs.

After that, there are guys like Dukes Cam Reddish, Brandon Clarke from Gonzaga, Jaxon Hayes from Texas, and Nassir Little from UNC. The top ranked foreign guy is Sekow Doumbouya from France, but I don't know anything about him other than he is only 18.

I read that the Cavs like Claxton, the 7 footer from Georgia at 26. He's very raw and maybe should have stayed another year in college, but he has talent and the Cavs could develop him.

Should be a fun night w/a lot of trades.

I think Hunter is the guy we should go after, with Culver a close second. They seems to be pretty solid all-around guys that can shoot and defend.

Claxton at 26 is a good call too. He's athletic and can defend more than one position. I wouldn't mind a guy like Eric Paschall either. He's sort of a tweener, but I'm seeing that the NBA is becoming a bit position-less anyway these days.

With the constant pick and switches that teams run, you really need versatile guys that can do many different things. There's no real 1-5 position anymore. You want guys in the mold of one of these:

- A super athletic big-man that can rebound and defend multiple positions. Pre-Kardashian Tristan Thompson is actually a good example.
- A big-man that can hit from three or is an effective passer. Kevin Love, a great example. Draymond green is another. Someone that can pull other big men out of the middle.
- A ball-handling, lengthy, well-rounded wing guy that can create. Plenty of examples here.
- A ball-handling point-guard type that can shoot the lights out and hit open teammates. Curry is a good example here. He's smaller, and not great at defense, but he's one of the best at passing and shooting.
- Everyone else should be a three-and-D type of guy. Capable of covering more than one position, and dangerous from anywhere on the floor.

Guys you don't really want these days:
- Lumbering big men that "play the post"
- Slasher PGs that can only score by driving to the rim.
- Wing guys that only want to shoot inside of 22 feet and can't pass.
- Anyone that is described with a "definite" position, and can't really guard anybody outside of that prototype.

The more I read, the more I might be leaning towards Hunter. I read that he is a far better defender. That is important and he did outplay Culver in the NCAA Tournament.

I saw an ESPN mock and they had us taking Garland. That seems strange to me considering we have Sexton. We couldn't play them together, right?

The Cavs reportedly intend to draft Vanderbilt PG Darius Garland at No. 5, but they are "still entertaining offers" for the pick.

The interest in Garland comes from reputable sources Marc Stein and Chris Haynes, and it sounds like the first five picks in the draft might be set -- Zion Williamson, Ja Morant, RJ Barrett, De'Andre Hunter and Garland. That could change if Cleveland flips their pick, but either way it won't take long for official picks to start rolling in.

The Hawks have traded for the No. 4 pick in the draft, sending picks Nos. 8, 17 and 35.

New Orleans also gets a protected first-round pick in 2020 in the deal, while sending the Hawks the No. 57 pick, a future second-rounder, and Solomon Hill. It's a big haul for the Pelicans, who continue to max out the benefits of Anthony Davis' departure. It sounds like the Hawks have their sights set on Virginia F De'Andre Hunter with their newly-acquired lottery pick.

The Hawks are "pursuing" De'Andre Hunter with their newly-acquired No. 4 pick, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.com.

Shams Charania adds the the Hawks are after Hunter or Reddish with Hunter ahead. The Hawks have been interested in Hunter for a while now, and they move up to No. 4 to basically guarantee they will get the first shot at him. As a defense-first three with ability to switch, he finds himself in a fantastic spot.

Garland was injured five games into his freshman season at Vanderbilt, making him the draft’s great mystery. The Cavs have gone back to Nike EYBL tape, old notes from high school and have received information from Team USA members. Some in the organization believe Garland would be battling Morant as the draft’s top point guard had he stayed healthy. Despite Collin Sexton’s growth as a rookie and the excitement the Cavs have for him in Year 2, they won’t overlook Garland, an intriguing teenager who shoots well off the bounce and the catch. He will be in the conversation at No. 5, with some believing he can be an offensive weapon in what Beilein would make a dangerous two-PG system.

It sounds like he is a good outside shooter but a little on the short side, a little on the skinny side, not an explosive driver to the hoop, and if he was a great passer I think we'd have heard about it.

What about that makes him a top 5 pick?

I really like the pick of Garland for a number of reasons. The game has changed to being guard heavy. Sexton and Garland can become a dominant duo. Also, with dynamic guards like these 2 could raise the possibility to attract a max free agent to play along with them after next season.

I agree....the NBA changes. It's a guard league these days much like the days of the BIG O, Jerry West, Walt Frazier to name a few. Let those guys run and gun. Add in Love working for 16 rebounds a game an his Wes Unseld outlet pass and we have something.

Best shooter in the draft? If that’s true, good pick.

Garland is an excellent player. I just didn't think the Cavs would take him because they are going to have a tough time defending taller guards w/Sexton and Garland as the starting guards.

Hunter would have been nice, but Atlanta made that trade and he was who they targeted.

I actually like Garland as a player. Just a bit surprised that we will have two small dudes starting in the backcourt.

I imagine Sexton will be the primary ball handler and Garland will be the deadly shooter. After all, he was the best shooter in the draft. If you watched the highlights, you saw that he gets rid of it really quick w/no wasted motions. He has great range. Earlier I compared him to Lillard and Chauncy Billips made the same comparison. It would be great if he even came close to Dame.

Man, I had Nassir Little penciled in for the Cavs, and he goes one spot ahead of us.

He's a scorer and rebounder. There's always value with that kind of player late in the 1st. I suppose I'm OK with it.

I am still disappointed that Nassir Little went one darn before us. As far as Windler, I am just going off of what the CBS instant analysis said. I also never really paid any attention to him.

Seriously, what are the chances that these guys will help take the Cavs to the playoffs in the next couple years?

We'll see. I think that we grabbed the coach we did with the idea of developing guys. We'll see how that all works out.

Slim and none. The league is really becoming about where the superstars want to play. All the talk this year surrounding the top players like KD, Kawhi, Kyrie, etc was about NY and LA. I doubt anyone is going to want to come to Cleveland.

The Cavs added some good shooters and talent last night and they might be a one and done playoff team in 2-3 years, but nothing more than that unless they can add a superstar or two.

There is no doubt that Porter is a top-ten talent. Probably even higher than that. But, he was suspended indefinitely due to a series of off-the-court personal conduct issues. He hasn't sounded apologetic about it either, and blamed others for spreading false rumors about him leaving USC.

both dame and mccollum are legit 6'3 . Going to have to find someone to defend, i mean this lineup might be one of the worst defensive lineups in history. On the flip side, we should score a ton. First one to ring the bell wins
