Trump: Cuomo using New York attorney general as 'bludgeoning tool' against me

President Trump on Monday lashed out at New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), accusing him of using the state attorney general as a “bludgeoning tool” against him.

“It is very hard and expensive to live in New York. Governor Andrew Cuomo uses his Attorney General as a bludgeoning tool for his own purposes. They sue on everything, always in search of a crime,” Trump tweeted.

The attack came in a string of tweets in which Trump lashed out at the state’s lawsuit against his foundation, which was forced to shutter.

The president also claimed without evidence that “people and businesses are fleeing New York in record numbers” because of the threat of investigations.

Though it’s not clear what, specifically, triggered the president’s outburst, New York Attorney General Letitia James has been aggressive in investigating Trump and his administration. She filed or joined a barrage of lawsuits on issues from the administration’s decision to add a citizenship question to the census to the Trump Organization’s business practices.

The lawsuit against the Trump Foundation was started by James’s predecessor, Eric Schneiderman, who resigned in May 2018 after he was accused of abusing multiple women. Schneiderman disputed the notion that he assaulted women during what he said were consensual sexual encounters.

Cuomo responded by accusing Trump of distorting his record, saying he “doesn’t really understand how government works.”

“In his administration, he appoints the attorney general. So his expression of ‘it’s a tool,’ maybe his attorney general is his tool. In New York, the attorney general is separately elected,” the governor told reporters on a conference call.

“I don’t have an attorney general. He appoints an attorney general and I think, if anything, the fact that law enforcement is looking into his corporations, if he has nothing to hide he has nothing to worry about. But I think the tweet shows that his paranoia is once again getting the better of him,” Cuomo added.

James also responded to Trump, tweeting that "No one is above the law, not even the President."

I don't doubt the President at all. If the liberals on this board are representative of the broader group, liberals are vindictive, intolerant, and for many, simple minded.

The pot calling the kettle black is pretty ripe.... but you probably don’t care about the cages at the boarder either... now tell me that conservatives are not vindictive, intolerant and simple minded..

False equivalence my friend.

Back in the day, they were weak, limp-wristed sissy half-men who could be pushed around like a bunch of split-tailed beta males.

Sounds to me like the conservative bullies can't take a little bloody nose every once in awhile. If that's the case, they should stay their ass at home where everyone thinks the same way. The 'arena of ideas' isn't a safe place.

NY governor signs bill allowing Congress to obtain Trump's state tax returns

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on Monday signed legislation that would allow Congress to obtain President Trump's state tax returns.

"This bill gives Congress the ability to fulfill its Constitutional responsibilities, strengthen our democratic system and ensure that no one is above the law," Cuomo said in a statement.

The bill signing comes after the House Ways and Means Committee, led by Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.), filed a lawsuit last week in order to obtain Trump's federal tax returns from 2013 to 2018.

Neal has indicated that he may not seek Trump's New York state returns, however.

He has said he wants to examine Trump's federal tax returns because the House panel is interested in oversight and legislation related to how the IRS audits presidents.

“The difficulty is that we don’t have control over state taxes,” he told reporters in May.

Under the New York law, the chairmen of the House Ways and Means Committee, Senate Finance Committee and Joint Committee on Taxation can request federal, state and local officials' state income tax returns from the commissioner of the New York Department of Taxation and Finance.

The state tax returns have to be requested in relation to a legitimate task of Congress, and lawmakers can only request them if they've requested related federal tax returns from the U.S. Treasury Department. Information in state tax returns that would violate federal or state law if disclosed, and certain personal information such as Social Security numbers would be redacted.

Cuomo signed the measure after the New York state legislature passed the legislation in May.

State Sen. Brad Hoylman (D), who authored the law, said that it "provides a safety valve" for members of Congress if they're stymied by the Trump administration in their effort to obtain the president's federal tax returns.

“I think the governor signing this bill underscores an important principle of our democracy, that no individual is above the law,” he told The Hill on Monday.

Hoylman said it's up to Neal and his colleagues to decide whether they want to take advantage of the new law. Nonetheless, he said that "New York has an important role as a state to play in reestablishing checks and balances."

He also expressed confidence that the law would "withstand any judicial review," since it applies broadly to public officials and doesn't just apply to Trump.

"This is more Presidential harassment," Jay Sekulow, a Trump lawyer, said in an email to The Hill. "We will respond to this as appropriate.”

Ryan Thomas, spokesman for the liberal group Stand Up America, urged Neal to request Trump's New York tax returns.

"Any further delay is an injustice to the American people who deserve transparency about Trump’s foreign entanglements and massive conflicts of interest," he said in a statement.

On one hand, I hope they get released. It will show 1 of 2 things: Nothing illegal, OR, something illegal.

However, on the other hand, you, and others like you with limited understanding will, if they are released, will find something to gripe about.

Remember the Mueller report you were anxiously awaiting? You told us for months on end about how bad it would be..........and?

Ah, shoot, just keep investigating. Keep on going. Turn about is fair play.

I think it's about time someone actually expects Trump to keep his word. He stated plainly that if Obama released his birth certificate he would release his taxes.

Who honestly believes his tax returns from 2016 and before are still under audit?

Congress has the legal authority to demand his tax returns.

He has lied and avoided the law for long enough. Since when did people start upholding the president should lie and disobey the law? When did that become the fault of the other party?

Oh Please,, Trump is in the middle of something like 3500 or more lawsuits... That didn't happen because he runs clean.. That only happens because there is a ton of smoke coming from his ear holes..

The guy is a crook and scam artist... Again, all evidence points to that very thing.

But to say anyone at anytime is pushing an agenda by following the law, seems just plain partisan BS.

Trump and every other president is NOT ABOVE THE LAW... and they shouldn't be.
