Can we just re-visit this; for Starters, they manhandled the Raiders, physically, the whole day,
I can go 10 years and not see too many games where the Browns manhandle a team like they did that day, the previous one coming to mind was a Derek Anderson (IIRC) vs the Dolphins, win, in that era, at least that ended in a win.
The Raiders were winless, at the games start.
The Raider game.
The end of the game, There still has to be a lesson in, Something! Something has got to be learned from that game.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

The lesson is, don't let the officials decide the game.
The Browns had the game won, with a 1st down run by Chubb. The refs did some weird "we looked at multiple angles, with no yard marks left on the field, and decided that the Browns were short". The Browns punted, couldn't stop the Raiders from tying the game, and then allowed them to score in OT. They had a chance to make plays, to stop the Raiders, but it never should have come to that.

This was also the game that Chubb had 3 carries for 105 yards. Pretty amazing, especially for a game that went deep into overtime.

They were running the clock out with no timeouts for the Raiders, and an 8 point lead, and a first down, after they brought the chains out, only 30 some seconds to go,
This is a NIGHTMARE.

Bakes pick 6 ... Bakes other picks ... this is all off of memory so i could be wrong ... Mitchell getting hurt early ... Williams refusing to adjust and gaurd the middle of the field .. how many HUGE plays did they have on crossing patterns cause Williams refused to adjust coverages after Mitchell went down ... Missed FG(s) ... i’m torn on that one ... if we don’t miss FG’s again Pitt and NO to open the season does Hue get fired mid season ... hindsight tells me i’m Glad we missed them ... *L* .. Officials ... Sash ... oh wait ... *LOL* ... There was a lot more ... that game was painful at the time .. but it all worked out in the long run ..

The lesson is, everything needs to be reviewable.

Long story short, we couldn't stop their offense. We lost a starter DB in the first or second quarter.
We punted thinking we could stop them (we should have) and we didn't.

No big deal. I will add that I really don't complain very often about officiating, but that spot and subsequent review were about as bad as it gets. Also, the TD return after Myles made the strip sack that was blown dead was another dagger to the heart.

It was a perfect storm of bad things happening in all categories. The officiating, in my opinion, was inexcusable. We played a terrible game on defense and made more than our share of dumb mistakes. For those reasons, I revert back to "never let the officials decide the game for you". THAT was a very hard loss to swallow.

Another odd little occurrence: Callaway took in a pass for a long gain that I thought he would score on, but went out on about the two yard line. Later we found that he suffered some sort of injury on the play that prevented him from getting in for a TD, and kept him out the rest of the game. Who knows the effect it might have had going forward that day.

Of course I see a Hue pic.. smh.
From I remember, this game was lost on turnovers, lack of defense, and probably the most hurtful, bad officiating.

Why they didn't go for it on 4th down after the refs double crossed them on the spot.
How the Raiders scored so fast after the punt,
The Browns had timeouts and the Raiders didn't
How did the Browns not use a timeout between the Raiders Td, and their 2 point conversion attempt.
All those early season OT games, the Browns offense was subpar during the Overtimes.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Something has got to be learned from that game. I would say we learned that the Ref's make more money under the table than above it.

Agreed. Didn't that sack strip fumble thing the refs didn't see happen to us in our last game against Baltimore? We should have won the division not them!!!

Exactly. I've been telling people we finished 7-8-1. We should have finished 9-6-1. It's water under the bridge but the ref's cost us 2 games last season.

If we would have won the Raiders and Ravens games, then we would have won the division. Or how about when the OT was moving a full second before the snap on a play which resulted in a TD for the Chargers. Thing is, every team has games where missed or bad calls by refs influence the outcome. It feels like it happens more to the Browns, but that may be because we only notice when it happens to us. I'm sure there were calls that our opponents thought were unfair in our favor. Human error is part of the game, in almost every sport.

I'm sure there were calls that our opponents thought were unfair in our favor. Human error is part of the game, in almost every sport. This is unquestionably true ... bad calls influence any and all. Some teams and superstars certainly get the benefit of 50/50 calls - and some (like late hits on Baker last year) seem to lose out on some of the same 50/50 calls ... but to the largest extent it balances itself out. Last season what sticks out in my mind (i'm not going to go back and revisit - this is going off memory) ... the Browns had 3 calls that were so badly blown, and so late in the game that they changed the outcome of the game. Maybe on balance the good and bad calls all evened out - IDK - but the 3 games we lost (or maybe one was the tie?) ... the bad calls were so late in the game they influenced and decided the outcome. That was the part that was so hard to swallow. Just my recollection. To add or clarify - a bad blown call on the first drive of the game and ends a drive - compared to the exact same blown call to end the final drive of the game have very different impacts.

I have always felt as though bad calls were a result of the Browns perceived incompetence. If the Browns made a "good", the reaction was .. the Browns are so bad that a "GOOD" play was impossible, therefore there must have been a penalty on the play somewhere and in comes the late flag.
The Cleveland Browns - WE KNOW QUARTERBACKS ( Look at how many we've had ... )

While it was an unbelievable non-call, we got waxed that game.

I'm all for "don't let the refs decide" but sometimes they just steal one. That has been happening for years! But I have learned coaching unlike the view point of a fan. YOU CANNOT put yourselves in a position to lose one/two by a call of the ref. Got to just overcome and don't be a loser and have that dictate our fate of, oh no we are going to lose another one.
