It's been a few days.. the week of the 4th I was getting a lot of what I assumed was ulcers and gastric distress.. I shook it off and kept working.

I didn't think much of it bc I went to the ER April 18 and complained about chest pains. For background info I'm a 60 year old middle aged white male that's never really paid much attn to what I SHOULD eat and drink.. at that time they kept me overnight, then released me saying that there was nothing wrong and that I had a slight case of PVC (premature ventricular contraction.. in other words an extra heartbeat every so often)

Fast forward to last Monday.. I was tired of popping Tums and such and sweating out the ulcers and I decided it wasn't getting better so I called off work and hopped on the bus to Riverside Hospital in Columbus. (I didn't want to drive) I got about 2-3 stops from the hospital stop when I had another attack. I managed to hang on till I got there and sorta collapsed at the stop trying to catch my breath and I was soaking my shirt with sweat.

Sort of long atory short, a Nurse from the hospital ran out with a wheel chair and told me she'd been watching me out the window and that she was going to take me to the ER. I said good idea.. She sprinted me into the ER yelling get the F out of the way!! Moses never parted the Red Sea so good btw..

I get in there, they do a EKG and the guy yells STEMI! I'm wondering WTF.. I have an ulcer and an acid attack, what are you guys going nuts about? The head ER Doc pops his head in takes one look at the EKG paper tells me I'm having a heart attack and that I'm getting wheeled into a room and there's going to be a lot of people around you.. He wasn't sheeping around.

They got me prepped and in surgery in about 10 mins.. and I'm just laying there thinking "Oh, so this is what a heart attack feels like and I'm just casually thinking this is the end of my days and I'm going to miss the 2019 season.

A shot of Fetanyl and 20 mins later the surgeon steps back tells me he's done and there are 2 stents in my heart. 98% blocked and 78% blocked and that I almost didn't make the 1st down.

Kudos to the ER Cardiac staff at Riverside, they rock when it's 3rd and goal. Dr's Huff and Dr Jolly, you guys do work.

So, I'm off work for the next 2 weeks recovering - I get tired pretty easy and it's still pretty sore. I expect that my argumentative ass is gonna wade into the Pure Football so be warned.

Looks like you have a few new heroes in your HOF. Kudos to the staff at Riverside! Get well, we need you at the stadium this year.

Damn! So glad to hear they caught it in time! We're the same age and I'm not in as good of shape as I once was. The back makes that impossible. I do watch my diet closer and have regular doctor visits so I hope that will help.

Glad to hear you’re on the mend. Heart attacks are no joke. You’re lucky you didn’t try to ‘man through’ your pain and sought help. Many guys don’t want to look weak so they ignore the symptoms until it’s too late. The sweating profusely thing is a dead give away. I’m sure your skin tone was fairly gray at the time too. That nurse knew what she was seeing from across the parking lot. Good on her. Send her a card or something. She earned it.

Riverside is a great hospital. I had a similar run in with them many years ago. Had chest pain. Ignored it until I couldn’t. Had my sister take me to the ER. Ended up with a chest tube placed within minutes of walking in the door as I had a collapsed lung. Spent 9 days there before they ended up needing to perform surgery to repair me. Spent another 5 days post op recovering before going home. I was uninsured. The prior year I made $300 more than the $7000 yearly income poverty level. They wrote my entire bill off. I’m very thankful for their care.

Glad you’re still here with us. Let this be a teaching moment for everyone that hears your story.

Damn, Paul....you can't do that to me...so glad you are on the mend...There are too many tailgates left (in both of us) Although, I guess the consumption at them will have to be a little different...say adios to the Deep Fried Tailgate....I swear to God it has to be GG's Frito's that caused this...Damn you GG and your frito deliciousness!!!!

In all seriousness...do what the docs say and get back on your feet as soon as possible...I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Glad you went! Glad the nurse recognized. Glad the doctors knew what to do. Glad everything, at this point, is good.

Side note: Spent some time chatting with a friend of mine last night. He's from W.Virgina. A P.A. 56 years old, and his wife died about 8 weeks ago from a heart attack. He is beyond depressed.

Is there some test that shows blockage like that? I have high blood pressure, but it is controlled at 120/72 with medication. Should I be concerned?

If you notice your upper chest feeling a bit tight and your lower lip being a bit numb and you're out of breath too easily, chances are really good it's not a sinus problem.

And on another side note, my son used to work at riverside wen he was a nurse. He's not there now. But, his brother works in the e.r. there currently. (brother means half brother)

For those wondering about the terminology:

STEMI:

A STEMI is a full-blown heart attack caused by the complete blockage of a heart artery. ... STEMI stands for ST elevation myocardial infarction. “ST elevation” refers to a particular pattern on an EKG heart tracing and “myocardial infarction” is the medical term for a heart attack

STEMI is one of three types of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). ACS occurs when a plaque ruptures from within a coronary artery, causing the partial or complete obstruction of that artery. ... When obstructed, the portion of the heart muscle serviced by that artery will quickly suffer from a lack of oxygen, called ischemia .

A STEMI is the most serious type of heart attack, where there is a long interruption to the blood supply. This is caused by a total blockage of the coronary artery, which can cause extensive damage to a large area of the heart. A STEMI is what most people think of when they hear the term "heart attack".

Not unless you're having other symptoms like pressure in your chest, shortness of breath, chest pain, abnormal EKG, etc. The definitive test is a cardiac cath.

Hey Saint, I am fairly certain she doesn't "expect" anything, but I guarantee you she will truly appreciate it if you did a nice thing or three for her. I was a teacher for years and never expected anything from the parents or kids, but when I received a letter or if they contacted my administrator, I felt really good inside.

So, I would suggest finding out her name and department. Send her a card, or better yet, a letter. Tell her how much her acts mean to you. Offer to buy her a coffee or lunch so you can chat. If she accepts, look her in the eyes and tell her how you really feel.

I think you could also writer her superiors and talk her up. Tell them how you are spreading the word of what a great hospital it is and what an awesome nurse she is. Tell them they are truly fortunate to have such a great person working for them.

This will mean more to the nurse than a gift ever would. Those who serve don't do it for the money or the glory. They do it because they want to help other people and it makes them feel good when they are acknowledged for doing just that.

You have some time on your hands. Make that ladies day, Saint.
