This would be a great discussion [well, probably not on this board] to discuss how much people are willing to look away from a player's acts just because he performs well on the field.

I remember the Josh Gordon discussions. People would go ballistic if anyone dared question him. Yet, when Davonne Bess, I think that is how you spell it, had a drug issue, the same folks who defended Gordon made an abrupt U-turn and trashed Bess.

I know this isn't the political forum or the EE forum, but I am not a fan of those types of double-standards. Right is right and wrong is wrong. How a dude plays should not influence how we judge his character.

If it's just being a mouthy, arrogant juvenile smartass and he's making us playoff contender, what's the big deal? The dude's had to scrap for everything he's achieved so far. Not everyone is Barry Sanders who just quietly hands the ball to the ref after making a big play and wouldn't say crap if he had a mouthful.

If Baker were assaulting people or abusing women, then it's a different story.

Wait a minute. Have you ever met Baker? Have you ever met anyone from his family? Have you ever met one of his teammates? Are you aware of what he does with children outside his duties for the Browns?

His teammates absolutely LOVE the guy. His relationship with Kitchens is already special. Dorsey is all in on Baker. Those are things not related to how he plays that influence how one judges character.

You talk/compare like he's a druggie that has continually let down his teammates or a woman-abuser.

You whiffed on that eval Vers. He made Hue like like the moron that he was. It's ok. Let it go. You still know a lot about football...you just missed on that one. It happens.

No, I don't know him. However, I did see him grab his crotch in a football stadium. I did see read his comments where he trashed his college coach. I did see him call Hue fake for taking a job AFTER he was fired and then saying it was okay to leave TT for Oklahoma because he didn't get a scholarship. I did read his comments about how NFL draft analysts were not athletic enough to play checkers. I could go on and on and on.

It has nothing to do with Baker, and the fact that Baker shun the light on baby huey and proved some wrong about him. You don't hear people yelling about Randall making hue look like an idiot when he gave him the ball he INT, do you? Not a word about that.....wonder why?

Its a personal vendetta for some against Bake, because hes made them look dumb every step of the way since draft day - and continues to do so.

This is a fair point. I find it interesting that some people consider Baker to be bad mouthing people. From my vantage point I don't think this is even close to what he's doing. At least not unwarranted.

Baker is like a bee. If you don't bother him, he's not going to bother you. But if you swat at him, he's going to sting you. And every single incident that someone complains about Baker, the crotch grab, flag planting, bashing an old coach, etc, every single one was a rebuttal. It wasn't simply an unwarranted action.

Baker isn't "PC." He's not going to Peyton Manning his way around the NFL. He's not going to give the political correct answers. He's going to tell you how it is. He's not going to say Hue is a good coach, we just don't see eye to eye. He's going to call it as it is. That's not being immature, that's telling the truth.

I keep saying this, but Baker is the most misunderstood player.

"They said that when they beat Notre Dame a couple years ago in 2016 and they won two or three games after that,” Mayfield told Sportsalk 1400 in Norman, Okla. "I'm so sick of it...His opinion on anything winning does't matter...He doesn't like me and I hope he doesn't like me either."

I mean he didn't say it very well, but......

If you would just actually admit that everyone has their flaws instead of making Baker out to be some kind of saint, it wouldn't be so bad.

But instead reading your posts are like watching a poor standup act at a second rate comedy club.

This is ridiculous. I never said he was a saint, did I?

Post football instead of trying to make yourself "look good" by putting someone else's opinion or post down.

I have major double standards on this.

Baker last season was good, projected to be even better (WOOHOO). Planting the flag at OSU (cool, #goblue), encounter with cops (not cool), throwing ball at opponent's head (not cool), grabbing crotch (meh), talking to media about duke (between cool and meh)

Overall 1 WOOHOO, 1 COOL, 1 NOT COOL, 1 MEH and 1 somewhere in between COOL AND MEH. Not so bad.

Take away the 1 WOOHOO and I'd cut him.

That is not how I would break down the situation. But hey, that's just me.

The "Woohoo" encapsulates so much more than some binary or +/- equation for me.

I don't read it like that, but that is my opinion, not Vers'.

I consider him a friend. I consider you a friend as well,

I just don't know your opinion since you seem to allow Vers to lead the way.

I embrace Baker and his attitude. IMO it is exactly what we have been lacking for 20 years. 20 years man. We were late 40's to early 50's then.

It goes quicker every year my friend.

I was talking with a hockey player I know last season, around November or so. And he said, "he seems a bit cocky, but the Browns needed that".

We sure did.

As long as he's not breaking any laws, as long as he's leading us to wins, I don't care (very much) about his verbal transgressions, which have been very minor in the grand scheme of things.

If baker keeps doing bake things and takes us deep into January, I am good.

That's right where I'm at. If he's not breaking little boy's arms, abusing women, doing drugs or getting into bar fights.... I'll let his immature blabberings take us into the postseason and enjoy every second of it. I won't have a hard time rooting for him.

Yes we do lamp .. I’d give us a far better chance in the following 2-3 years, but our window starts now

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I prefer to judge Baker as a football player...the QB of the Browns.

I have no freaking idea what has some of the DawgTalkers so upset over Baker's past...

The football can't begin soon enough and hopefully bring an end to silly season.

I onlycare about his performance on the field; do your talking there.

Some of the other stuff is junk. Karma will take care of itself. Play ball hard.

Go, Browns!

I've actually made my opinion pretty clear in the past but I'll repeat it because it seems it may have gotten lost in the shuffle. And yes, I have always considered you a friend as well. Even when we ruffle each others feathers at times. lol

I don't see anything Baker has done as a major issue. A minor issue yes. But it seems that on both sides of the fence people either wish to act like it's nothing or act like it's worse than it is. But isn't that the way it is in our world today?

Quote:

And this is the part that confuses me. I don't have a problem with "attitude" per say. But I think we just see the definition of attitude in a different light. To me your attitude comes through in your swagger and the way you carry yourself. The way you lead your team. I don't see making comments out of turn as attitude. I don't see comments on the career choices of other players or past coaches as attitude. I consider those simply as comments that shouldn't have been made. I've seen a lot of people with attitude and swagger avoid those type of things.

So like I said, I don't see it as a big deal. At least not to this point. Depending on what happens going forward it could be. We'll all just have to wait and see. I'm just not going to pretend that's the normal way one has to act in order to have what you call attitude.

Just asking AGAIN... has anyone but the reporter confirmed that the Vets on the team actually spoke to Mayfield about this?

See, that's the difference I'm talking about here.

Players know you don't confirm something like that if it did happen. You keep things like that in house. You keep the business of your team mates quiet. You don't comment about it to the press.

So we'll never know if it actually happened. What we do know is that if it happened we won't hear about it. Hopefully a lesson is learned there.

Cleveland Browns receiver Jarvis Landry talks about reports that some veterans talked with Baker Mayfield about his comments on Duke Johnson’s holdout. Landry spoke at his Football ProCamp at Shaker Heights High School. Friday, June 14, 2019.

Has anyone "confirmed" that the vets did not talk to Baker?

Has Baker called Silver a liar? Have the players said they never spoke to him?

ORLEANS DARKWA
RB, UNSIGNED FREE AGENT

Free agent RB Orleans Darkwa is working out for the Browns on Monday.

Darkwa is back to full health after tearing his Achilles' last October while working out for Jacksonville. Cleveland has Nick Chubb and Duke Johnson currently set to open the season atop the depth chart with Kareem Hunt suspended. Behind them, it's Dontrell Hilliard Trayvone Gray, and D'Ernest Johnson.

I suppose, But doesn't that make you wonder how this reporter found out if nobody is talking!

How this thread feels for the last month.

The greatest thing is that this is the BIGGEST "negative" thing we've had to talk about since.... October??
That's where our worries are; that's how FAR this team has come.

I don't know one way or the other. I don't feel any fan really does.

But I do keep in mind that there a lot of people who work for the Browns at lower positions that I'm pretty sure have a pretty firm grasp of many of the things that are going on around them.
