So, my wife and I got a very random and good offer on our house (we were not even trying to sell it). The son of the people we bought our home off of, made us an offer via facebook, and hey - I put a nice chunk in my pocket with it - so we are moving.
We found a home in a OH.
I was born in Ohio, but never really lived there as we moved when I was 1.
What do I need to know moving to Ohio? In WV, we pay a tax on our vehicles every year. No school tax though. Its in Jefferson Country, so I don't believe there are vehicle emissions/inspections. Any weird taxes or things I should know about before moving.
We found an really nice little place with a HUGE inground pool - trying to close fast so we can enjoy it a little bit before we have to close it for the year.
Also, any pool owners with tips and cost to maintain it? I will probably just pay someone to maintain it for until I have to close it. But I will want to maintain it myself next year to save the money. I heard a tip about leaving tennis balls in the pool.

- The Cleveland Browns play in Cuyahoga county which is about 100 miles north of where you're moving to. They're supposed to be really good this year.
- See that strip that extends from Cleveland in the Northeast, passes through Columbus, and hits Cincinnati in the Southwest? There are people there. Might not be the densest population but there are many towns and such. Outside of that strip? Nothing, nobody or anything to do anywhere (slight exaggeration perhaps, as YTown and archbold may point out.)
- Be careful with an inground pool. There's massive liability involved with that and you may have to fence it off. That's probably something to research.
- Ohio state troopers are everywhere and they will give you a ticket for speeding. Apparently Ohio has a reputation for this.

Every pool should be fenced and locked at all times when an adult is not present. Don't ever assume that a child can't figure out how to work a handle or a slide latch.
My brother had a pool, and my niece was babysitting for her brother's girlfriend. The little girl was 5. My niece took her upstairs to take a nap, and fell asleep herself, as well. The little girl got the outside door open, went out to the pool, managed to somehow get the ladder down, climbed in, and drowned.
Never take for granted that a kid "can't" get in when you aren't around. Look at the pool as if you were a 5 year old, and look for any and every way they might get in when you aren't watching. Please, don't take it for granted.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

It has a brand new 8 foot high privacy fence around the entire back of the property and pool. There will be padlocks installed, no trespassing signs on the gates, along with motion security cameras for the pool area once we move in. I should be ok with the liability issue. My insurance agents said there would be no problems with all that.

Please, don't take it for granted. Wow man, that is a sad story. There was a similar story this year in my area, but it a little more nefarious. The babysitter (a grown adult) was watching a 5-7 year old. She was found dead in the pool by the sitter. The sitter stated she must have snuck into the pool when she was in bathroom - but the story didn't add up. 1. The pool was the neighbors pool (which was gated) 2. the neighbors were out of town, but stated they took the ladder off the pool, the ladder was found attached. 3. The little girl was found in her swimsuit, with a few pool toys. how could a 5-7 year lift and attach a ladder to a pool by herself? Seems odd to me. How could a girl that young get herself dressed, sneak into the neighbors yard, put the pool ladder up, climb in and drown - all within a bathroom trip? But yes, we will have many security measures for our pool, as our son is only 4. We have an 8 ft privacy fence that is brand new, which will be padlocked. I am also having a cover put on it, as well as having motion security cameras. Our back doors lead out to a enclosed patio. The back doors will be locked with contact sensors as well (incase he tries to sneak out the back), and the patio door will have a deadbolt that he will not be able to reach at least until hes much older and a less change of drowning.

I just never want anyone to go through what my brother and his family have gone through. Absolutely understand, I didn't take your warning other way. I couldn't even imagine. Our home inspection is tomorrow, I am measuring the pool dimensions while I am there, so that the first thing I can do is purchase a cover for it. Our yard will be on a dead street, so we will not even let my son play out back unless an adult is out there.

Any weird taxes or things I should know about before moving. See if there is a school district income tax. I never knew about these until I moved to Reynoldsbrug (near Columbus). There was a .05% income tax for the school district - there are many in Ohio that do this. https://www.tax.ohio.gov/school_district_income.aspxNo vehicle tax, just registration. When I moved from Reynoldsburg I went from a city to a township (Galloway). Townships in Ohio don't have income tax typically, which is nice. So no more school district or city taxes for me!

Nothing screws up a perfectly good highway and traffic that might otherwise flow easily quite like the dynamic duo of OSHP & ODOT.

Well, the title of the thread is, "Moving To Ohio", so....
I think you can see where that might be a little confusing.

I think you can see where that might be a little confusing. I can. I was looking more for tax stuff, weird laws that Ohio may have. For instance, in WV you can carry concealed without a permit. I have a carry permit though in WV, does it carry over to OH or do I have to get a new permit. etc. Things like that. Far as weather, we do get different weather than most of Oh, it gets more snow - we typically get more cold and wet

Buy a snowblower. And, if you have children, every child should be equipped with a snow shovel. Put those kids to work in winter.

When I moved from PA to WV (about 15 min away - there were a TON of crazy things that were different being in a new state. EX: Taxes, registration of vehicles, inspections, carry laws, etc. I was looking more for that kind of stuff

In Ohio you pay to the county in which you work, and if your local city tax is higher, they collect that difference as well. Example: A person lives in Boardman, which has no local tax. This same person works in Struthers, which has a 2% city income tax. The employee would have the 2% withheld by their employer, and paid to the city of Struthers. (even though they have no local tax where they live)

I was under the impression I had to pay an ADDITIONAL % for the local school, but I according to the link that was posted I will not. Which is nice.

WE get about the same weather as Pittsburgh, usually a 1 good snow (6-10 in a year) but mostly just freezing rain and a inch or two here and there.

But since I am moving there, my WV carry permit is not void and I have to get a new OH permit.

However, moving to Ohio and becoming an Ohio citizen might affect that? As in, he may need to get an Ohio CCW license? I don't know.

Check everything out bro. The sales tax is 7.25 percent. Each county and city have different laws about local tax, city tax, and school district tax., take the time to get to know these before you move in.

I will be close enough to still shop in WV, which has much less sales tax for regular things. I know the taxes are going to be higher than where I am now, which I am Ok with ( I am not going to find the kind of house I have found where I am at).

Move closer to Toronto and Wellsville and you will find the housing even cheaper. We looked at Toronto. I loved the small town feel of it and the seclusion type setting. We looked at a house literally across the street from the football stadium, which would have been cool - but the asking price was a little crazy on that one. There wasn't anything in the area though that had what we were looking for (more living space, updated, either a huge yard or a pool).

Lots of gas and Oil work were going on. Markwest has a plant in Cadiz and in Hopedale. New gas fired power plant coming to Wellsville soon. New ethane cracker maybe coming in Belmont County. Lots of truck traffic. Route 7 will probably be a mess next year around Wellsville
If you buy any property of any size make sure gas and oil rights transfer .
