I know that us Browns fans dread the thought of another College coach or someone w/o experience as a HC in the NFL, but hear me out. The keys to winning in the NFL are simple (for most teams ) 1. Play sound defense 2. Run the ball, play action off of it 3. Play the field position game All 3 of those things are what won OSU the Nat'l Title in 02/03. Tressel is conservative by nature. He is not a gimmicky college coach like Spurrier. He is a proven winner; having done so @ YSU in division II and then in division I with the Buckeyes. At Tressel's press conference, the first thing that he made mention of was how many days until the Bucks played UM. He is a native Clevelander and is said to be a die-hard Browns fan. I think that the intangibles are what make a good HC in the NFL; how you lead and manage people. Experience is not the biggest asset, IMHO. All great HC's started somewhere. I think Tressel has those intangibles. One of the biggest mistakes that College coaches make when leaping to the NFL, is that they do not hire seasoned coordinators and veteran Asst Coaches. I believe that Tressel could retain Grantham and integrate some of his beliefs into the 3-4 system. Then after Grantham takes a HC position, Tressel can hire someone himself that aligns with his defensive philosophy (Mel Tucker? He did coach under Tressel @ OSU). I think that Chud will be retained as the OC for the next HC, to ensure continuity in Quinn's development. The only thing left would be to hire Marty or another old seasoned Vet to "consult" and provide some wise guidance. The other thing that I think makes this interesting is that Tressel would be following the same progression that Paul Brown did, first @ OSU and then on the Browns. To make it work, I would give him a 10 year contract. This demonstrates to both him and our fans that we are willing to create a system and an atmosphere that is conducive to winning. I would come out publicly and state that he will be given 4 years no matter what to instill a passion and pride into this team. The duration of the contract makes it known that this is his team. He won't have to out up with players w/ their own agenda and would have the support of the FO when handling rogue players (a big issue w/ College Coaches). He may not be Cowher in terms of raw emotion but we have seen him get pissed. Also, being from Berea, he would understand the Browns/Steelers rivalry and I guarantee you that he would have the Browns fired up to play Pittsburgh. I think that Tressel would invigorate a fan base that is at the end of their rope.

I do like Tressel, but we need a coach with experience and a pedigree. I don't think an inexperienced coach will get sufficient chance to turn things around. Look at the issue with Romeo. People want him gone. But a good chunk of people look at it with the issue of is it the players or the coach that is the problem. If you bring in a coach with a winning football pedigree in professional ball then that is no longer as much a question.
If Romeo fails, and from the media and the fans it seems he probably will, I hope they have the sense to get someone that won't be questioned constantly. Marty or Cower, or another coach with a winning track record in the NFL.
I don't think this is necessarily fair, but they need to do this so that we aren't questioning everything...better that we have one less thing to get worked up over as a fanbase.

You mean you think that Tressel would invigorate a LOCAL fan base that is at the end of their rope. This team probably has a larger fan base outside of Cleveland than in Cleveland. And I question some of those fans too. Sorry, but when I read most of the stuff posted here, I have to wonder.

You also neglected to mention talent.
Sorry, but I don't think Tressel is the answer. And a 10 year deal?! No one gets a ten year deal.
And the next head coach is ......

I want us to (as much as I hate to say it) follow the Steelers lead. None of the 3 coaches they hired in the last 40+ years had HC experience. That's not what it takes to win. There are only 2 former HCs that I would consider if I were the FO:
1. Jimmy Johnson (who is permanently retired ) 2. Bill Cowher (who may not return until 09)
HCs are all about leadership. Butch spent too much time juggling FO and HC duties (and boy did he suck in the FO) and Crennel just doesn't have what it takes to be a leader; possibly why he spent 25 years in the league and only 4-5 as a DC. Look @ Tomlin. This guy is 35 and was a DC last season!! That is ridiculous, but you can tell by his presence that he is a leader.
We have much more talent that at any time since 99 on this team. It will not take a coach like Tressel long to adapt to the pro game, IMO. I think that he could win 6-7 games with what we have now.
In his second year, I believe he could post a Butch-like 9-7 record. Heading into his third season with a stocked roster laden with young veteran play-makers and a savvy Quinn at the helm, we'd be there with whoever.

IF RAC is gone at some point before next season.. and IF we have a decent off season in the FA market... and IF we get through this year unscathed by career ending injuries... whoever the new coach is won't have to "turn around" anything... we are headed in the right direction talent wise, I also believe we are headed in the right direction at both coordinator positions... it's a matter of somebody, hopefully RAC, pulling it all together and translating it into wins...

I like Fisher also, but as of right now, he is under contract w/ Tenn and I don't know if they are gonna let him go. I think that he has done a wonderful job with that team and the Titans will pony up the dough. If not, I think he's off to the Cowboys (that's the rumormill gossip anyways).

To me it's not about whether they can or can't coach. I think Tressel would probably be good at any level. It's about whether they get enough time to prove it. A coach with a proven track record will get more rope from the fans and the owner.
For instance lets say we brought in Tressel and we had a couple 5-11 years in a row...they'd be all over firing him. And while I respect that you think he'd win right away I'm not so certain, it would largely depend on how much talent we actually have versus what we think we have. On one hand I want to say that we do have the talent to win, but on the other hand we sure are not showing it.
That said I think it is probably a moot point. Tressel has said repeatedly that OSU is his dream job. Had he won another national championship last year I might think he was satisfied enough to try the NFL, but I think he still feels he has something to prove.

Which I believe lends itself to being a near-perfect scenario in which to bring a College coach like Tressel into the league. A young, talented roster, a Franchise QB (pulling for you BQ), solid coordinators, a good GM and an owner who has always shown the willingness and the ability to spend money.

I didnt say that I thought that he could win "right-away", I agree with you. But that is why I said that the FO has to accept the fact that it will take a little while to build some consistency. As long as you can see progress. RAC being 1-12 in the division and losing to the Steelers in that manner are not acceptable. I do not see that happening to a Tressel-led team. We may lose, but we will compete and not beat ourselves.

I like Tressel and you make some valid points. But I sincerely doubt that the FO will go with a college coach if they decide to can RAC. I can see Tressel, Urban Meyer and probably Ferentz all being considered but who's to say any of those coaches would leave their current programs to coach a disaster that is the Browns.
Lerner listened to the fans voice about the Savage/Collins fiasco and he'll most likely follow suit on this situation too. It just makes sense to hire a veteran coach.
Let's see who could be available next year:
Jeff Fisher Bill Cowher Bill Parcells Marty Schottenheimer Jack Del Rio Tom Coughlin Marv Levy
Who else?

As far as I know Jeff Fisher is a free agent next year, and it seems from the reporting on the subject that Fisher and the titans are at an impasse..and are currently not negotiating. Quote:
Titans Coach Jeff Fisher is heading into the final year of his contract, but Wednesday he said he expects a new deal to be ironed out without problems.
There has been talk that Fisher could stall negotiations with the Titans and become a free agent after the 2007 season, when several high profile teams including the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, New York Giants and Cleveland Browns could be in the market for a new coach.

Forget Tressel let's get Fisher..:)

I am in Columbus. And as Great as Tressel is. OSU would get a good replacement and still recruit great talent. I am not sure that the Browns would be so lucky

BRING BACK MARTY!!!
The last time we had a decent team was with Marty, he built up SanDiego before being run out of town there.
We have not done anything since he left Cleveland. How much we miss the days of being competitive and actually making the playoffs like we did with Marty. Think about it - he was run out of Cleveland b/c we could not beat Denver. Since then, we have not done anything. How much would we give now to just make the playoffs?

either Marty or Cowher...i don't care which one
although our chance of beating pitt will increase by about 300% if we get Cowher...simply because of Cowher's animoisty towards thge Rooney's now he would make it his "priorty" to beat the snot out of them...probably like running up the score and such lol
We need Cowher Power
Lets Bring Cowher Home

Marty could not win with a loaded SD team (that AJ Smith built BTW), he could not beat a Denver team with a dam-good Browns team. Marty cannot win big games. He has never won big games.
He called a prevent defense against Denver with what 4 minutes left when he had them backed up on their own 2 yard line @ home in the AFC championship game....
No thanks to Marty. There is a reason a coach gets fired after going 14-2 and doesn't get picked up IMHO.

Yea, Levy is about 100 years old... Schottenheimer is about 65... and people complained that RAC was too old at.. what is he now? 59?
Coughlin should be sent to Afghanistan to get their government in shape...
Del Rio has just done enough to keep his job for a long time....
Parcells isn't going to coach again....
So we're back to Cowher and Fisher...

There are only 2 college coaches right now that I would think about.
Ferentz Iowa's coach Weiss Notre Dames coach
Tressel would be a mistake.

I like Ferentz also, even Bob Stoops (Ohioan). I am not keen on Weiss though. Scares me to hire the offensive version of Crennel. Why do you say that Tressel would be a mistake?

The two I mentioned I see as two coaches trying to bring the NFL to college as in systems...there might be a reason why they aren't in college. Might be why both aren't having great success.
Tressel I believe is a master at the college game and those who try to bring the college game to the NFL have a terrible track record.

One thing that stands out to me is that every year for the last several at the end of the season when the coaching shake ups happen, you never hear of any team going after him... maybe part of that is that they don't think they can get him out of OSU... maybe the other part is that NFL organizations find something about him unappealing.... It just seems that every year there is speculation about Ferentz, Carrol, Saban, etc... but nobody talks about going after Tressel... well, outside of this board that is..

tabbers, I don't disagree with you much, but I'm gonna have to here. Weiss would be a colossal mistake. We already had one egotistical, self-proclaimed genius and we're still not out of the hole he left us in.
Tressel wouldn't work in the NFL. He's a great college coach but his rah-rah, we-are-family philosophy won't work with a bunch of millionaires who change teams every other year. Plus, as a Buckeye, I'd hate to see him leave.
Lloyd Carr will be available next year. But, as a Buckeye, I'd hate to see him leave.

I'd add former Ashtabulan, Urban Meyer, to that list of potential pro winners.
But, back to reality, Tressel aint going anywhere and just say NO to first time pro coaches out of college.
I'd want Fisher, Cowher, the return of Marty, or (I still see the possiblity. Maybe some day.) the return of Bellicheck. And that's IF (not when) Romeo makes an exit.

Tressel is fine where he is at.
I don't think Cower want's to come here and if he does say goodbye to Savage as well because all the things I've heard is Cower wants to be GM/Coach of his next team.
And would Fisher be a good fit? Would he make drastic changes to our defense (switch to a 4-3??).
All I know is the next coach needs to be a good fit here and not someone who is going to clean house. IMO we just need a few more peices and a little depth and we are a contender. But maybe my Brown and Orange colored glasses are on a little tight.

Too old to BECOME a first time head coach DC.
You know, start in a higher position and job than he's EVER had before?

If you KNOW a guy can lead a team to a 14-2 record coming in,that sort of shortens the learning curve.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

This team has been a joke since Marty left. That's not coincidence.
Actually we had a guy named Belichick that had us on the right track and got us back in the playoffs before Art ripped the rug out from under it... since then, yes we have suffered...
You mean the year we went 5-11 and somehow snuck into the playoffs?
That was pure luck on our side that year. We should NOT have been in the playoffs.

Too old to BECOME a first time head coach DC.
So you have no qualms about hiring a guy that's going to be 66 or 67 years old? Who may have a growing pain year or two and decide it's not worth it and retire? .... Hell he might have 2 good years and retire... so then we get to do it all over again... Sorry, I know some guys enjoy coaching well into their 70s ... but I wouldn't bet on it..

If you KNOW a guy can lead a team to a 14-2 record coming in,that sort of shortens the learning curve.
I don't know for sure what he can lead us to... just because he's done it before doesn't mean he's going to do it again... I also noticed that you are working under the assumption that he is going to keep a lot of other things status quo.... another thing which is far from guaranteed.

This sounds like something I would write on the boards when I was a sophomore in high school...
by the way, what's with all these rookies lately?
In theory, I like the idea of Tressel preparing us for p*ttsburgh like he prepares Ohio State for m*ichigan (every Sunday they watch film and rehearse a new play that they won't use until the m*chigan game) ...but I want a proven NFL head coach. PLEASE give us that.

The coaches on my short list would be Jeff Fisher, Bill Cower, Kirk Ferentz and Urban Myers in no order. Leave old men and legends out of the conversation.

Whoever we bring will have to agree with the package we have in place. savage isn't going to tear down again.
Ferentz is his buddy and one who will probably go with the Savage plan.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

So what would he do if he had to play Michigan first?
