He'd have to be crazy to leave one of the best jobs in football to step into the meat grinder that is the Cleveland Browns. Shoot, Buckeye fans practically carry him around in a sedan chair and feed him grapes by hand compared to the way Browns fans behave.
I might add that many fans of both teams have impossibly high expectations and then get ugly when the dream meets reality but everyone would just say "That's not me! I never do that!" Truth is, we all do it all the time.

Bingo. That's why I'm dead set against the change at the top. I don't want someone coming in and changing schemes and wanting this coach or that coach. Then I have to hear all that crap about the "Getting to know the schemes" and "gelling" in a new system. Counter productive.
And the next head coach is ......

No. No. No. And another No. Why bring coach that has no NFL experience? Ferentz, on the other hand, I wouldn't mind, because I like him...But not any other college coaches. No Tressell's, No Carroll's, No Brown's.. 1a) Fox/Fisher 1b) Ferentz 2) Cowher.

Carroll has pro coaching experience.
I love Tressel being from near Y-town but don't know if he could be a pro coach. He is a motivator of men at the college level but I don't know if pro's would buy into him.

I know that us Browns fans dread the thought of another College coach or someone w/o experience as a HC in the NFL, but hear me out.
The keys to winning in the NFL are simple (for most teams ) 1. Play sound defense 2. Run the ball, play action off of it 3. Play the field position game
All 3 of those things are what won OSU the Nat'l Title in 02/03. Tressel is conservative by nature. He is not a gimmicky college coach like Spurrier. He is a proven winner; having done so @ YSU in division II and then in division I with the Buckeyes.
At Tressel's press conference, the first thing that he made mention of was how many days until the Bucks played UM. He is a native Clevelander and is said to be a die-hard Browns fan.
I think that the intangibles are what make a good HC in the NFL; how you lead and manage people. Experience is not the biggest asset, IMHO. All great HC's started somewhere. I think Tressel has those intangibles.
One of the biggest mistakes that College coaches make when leaping to the NFL, is that they do not hire seasoned coordinators and veteran Asst Coaches. I believe that Tressel could retain Grantham and integrate some of his beliefs into the 3-4 system. Then after Grantham takes a HC position, Tressel can hire someone himself that aligns with his defensive philosophy (Mel Tucker? He did coach under Tressel @ OSU). I think that Chud will be retained as the OC for the next HC, to ensure continuity in Quinn's development. The only thing left would be to hire Marty or another old seasoned Vet to "consult" and provide some wise guidance.
The other thing that I think makes this interesting is that Tressel would be following the same progression that Paul Brown did, first @ OSU and then on the Browns.
To make it work, I would give him a 10 year contract. This demonstrates to both him and our fans that we are willing to create a system and an atmosphere that is conducive to winning. I would come out publicly and state that he will be given 4 years no matter what to instill a passion and pride into this team. The duration of the contract makes it known that this is his team. He won't have to out up with players w/ their own agenda and would have the support of the FO when handling rogue players (a big issue w/ College Coaches).
He may not be Cowher in terms of raw emotion but we have seen him get pissed. Also, being from Berea, he would understand the Browns/Steelers rivalry and I guarantee you that he would have the Browns fired up to play Pittsburgh.
I think that Tressel would invigorate a fan base that is at the end of their rope.
LMAO. Why would Tressel want to leave a successfull career with OSU to come to the Browns only to have his storied history tarnished as being another unsuccesfull Browns coach ultimately destroying his whole career in football. Heck I would'nt leave my 9-5 monday-friday job at the shop to be head coach for the Browns.

I would!! I do agree though....why leave the very best coaching job in the country? At a school that recruits itself? I have never understood the college coaches leaving for the pros. Maybe back when college coaches didn't get as much jack $$, but now the money is pretty much the same. I"d coach college. Who needs to headaches of a bunch of millionaires you have to "motivate"

So you have no qualms about hiring a guy that's going to be 66 or 67 years old? Who may have a growing pain year or two and decide it's not worth it and retire? .... Hell he might have 2 good years and retire... so then we get to do it all over again... Sorry, I know some guys enjoy coaching well into their 70s ... but I wouldn't bet on it..
I think it's a far safer bet than what we have now. And from everything I know,Marty is a class guy. If he signs a contract for four or five years,I believe he would honor it. Yes I do. No,I have no qualms about it. And you get Quinn in a few quarters before the bye and start him after the bye? The OL gets a year together under their belts?
What growing pains? Marty has proven he can win already with decsent talent from jump street. What growing pains?

I don't know for sure what he can lead us to... just because he's done it before doesn't mean he's going to do it again...
He's had two losing seasons during his entire NFL head coaching career. That much we do know. He CAN coach successfully! We sure as hell don't have a clue in that regard where we are now. So I think we know enough.
Quote:
I also noticed that you are working under the assumption that he is going to keep a lot of other things status quo.... another thing which is far from guaranteed.
I'm not "assuming it". I'm saying it's a very practical option to work out that way. Marty worked well with Chud and Chud runs his offense. Do you see a "need for change" there"?
Marty runs the 3/4. Our LB core is set up perfectly for that. Do you see a need for change there?
What I'm saying is this appears as a "very logical progression" considering Chud is here and we already run the 3/4. Very logical. It may not be "the answer" but it's a distinct and practical possibility.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Good thoughts... No college coaches... Especially Ohio State Coaches... There are other, better, proven NFL coaches available and that will be available... No more reaches... The Cleveland Browns need a proven NFL head coach, an experienced winner. IMO

I take that as an insult. I am 14 and I wouldn't have said anything as absurd as the Browns hiring Jim Tressel even 2 years ago. My personal favorites as a possible head coach for the Browns (not that I want Romeo to go anywhere) are Cowher if Savage wouldn't have to go, Marty, and maybe someone like a Rex Ryan. And by the way I am not a rookie; I have been going on this board since I was 10.

You're fine. BrowniePoints is another kid who's well beyond his years.
Hell, experience-wise I'm still a pup at 20 compared to a lot of the people on here. You learn a lot on this site for sure. I went to WWF boards when I was 10, of course the Browns were "on hiatus" then
Ah, I fall into discussion mysteriously again.

First and foremost any new coach the team brings in must have the credentials that will garner the respect from the team needed for the players to buy into the program. Secondly the new coach must follow that up with assistants of the same caliber. Crennel with his Super Bowl ring had the first, however his assistants fell short. I don't think Tressel has it.
Those I would like to see considered are: Russ Grimm, Jim Mora, Rex Ryan.

The thing about Assistant Coaches with "Super Bowl" rings is that they are not the ones running the ship. Butch Davis won 2 SBs with the Cowboys. If you look at the Careers of Jimmy Johnson's Assistant Coaches, they don't fair all that well and none won SBs as Coaches.
How many SBs have Parcell's and RAC won without Belichick on the same staff? Being a good HC, IMHO is not about being great with X's and O's. It is about being a leader. How do you motivate your players, your staff. How do you handle adversity, the media, pressure. This is why there is no sure-fire method to choosing the perfect HC candidate. A lot of college coach's fail. A lot of coordinators that have strong resumes fail as well.
It seems that every year the reigning SB Champion has their roster and their staff raided. How many of those guys pan out? 50/50? The reason that the Steelers have been so successful in selecting HCs is that they must be looking for certain qualities outside of a strong resume. I mean look at Carthon, technically, he was the Offensive Coordinator for a Cowboys team that went to the playoffs. But we all know that he did not call the plays, that Parcells and Sean Payton did.
We need someone who can lead this team. It does not matter what the players think of the coach when he gets here. It matters that the coach comes in a earns their respect and shows them that they can win if they buy in to the system. If they don't buy in, they are free to leave (or be traded, based on value).
We need to establish an identity. What do we do extremely well? Nothing. Why? Is that talent? No. It is leadership. In developing an identity, we can select players that fit out system. I will not count out any HC candidate (except Marty, my wounds are too deep )
But to say that "I only want an experienced coach" does not mean that said coach will come in here and turn this thing around. None of the Browns coaches were experienced when we hired them. Some have been solid and some not so. That is the consistent of most of the NFL.
One has been Great, the legendary Paul Brown. Who BTW, won a National Championship at The Ohio State University in 1942

This thread makes me laugh.
One of Romeo's biggest criticisms is the fact that he hardly ever shows emotion. He never screams or yells on the sidelines. People say that he lacks a competitive fire on the sideline.
Have any of you ever watched Tressel? He is always cool, calm, and collected on the sideline. He's always clapping his hands after a bad play by the Buckeyes or after a punt with an optimistic look on his face. He'd be criticized so fast by the Cleveland fans for doing this!
Also, there's another thread on the board complaining about how "vanilla" our offense is right now and how we have to properly utilize our hybrid players. Well, the ol' coach down in Columbus is notorious for playing incredibly conservative offense and allowing the defense and special teams to win games.
On top of that, Tressel's teams play a 4-3, not a 3-4. This means that the strength of our team, particularly the linebackers, would have to be overhauled if we switched to a 4-3.
ADDITONALLY, Tressel is living his dream down in Columbus AND making big money to do it. Tressel is a god down there. Why would he leave that to coach a franchise that has made nothing but bad decisions for the last 8 years?
Bottom line, Tressel has no pro experience. He also is in a great situation at Ohio State. Coaching the Browns would be a bad idea for both him and the Brownies.
Much respect to ya, even if you wish me the opposite...

That is not my biggest criticism of RAC. So why does my thread make you laugh? I could care less if Crennel yells or sings a lullaby to his players, as long as they are prepared and play motivated all of the time.
My biggest critique of RAC is that this teams does not do anything great, with which to establish an identity.
On Defense: Do we pressure the QB consistently? Can we stop the run? Can we blanket any teams receivers? I say no to all of the above.
On Offense: Can we run it down a teams throats? Can we spread the field and pick teams apart? I say no to all of the above.
Also, Tomlin is a 4-3 guy and the Steelers still run the 3-4. I don't think it matters who we bring in here next season (if RAC is gone), I think Savage will ask that they run the 3-4. I also believe that we will hire a Defensive-minded coach. We have invested a lot in BQ and I don't think that PS will shake up the OC position and system again so soon. I believe that whoever comes in here will retain Chud.
Again, I am no expert, we all come here to discuss our opinions. Mine is that Tressel would be a good choice. I believe that he would need time to grow as would most candidates. That is why I made the statement regarding such a long contract. We need to develop a system and an identity. To do so, we better get it right on our next hire.
I am not sold on the sexy coordinators. Every year there is a new pair of them and everyone drools after them. The truth is, just as many NFL coordinators fail as coaches as College coaches do. Paul Brown was a college coach.
As far as disciplining players in the NFL as opposed to college, I think that is overrated. You have to draft quality players of good character. If I had to choose between a playmaker with questionable morals and a solid player who is a good citizen, give me the solid (GW vs. R. Seymour). That takes care of itself.
Why would he leave? for $7-8 million dollars a year and to coach what is rumored to be his Favorite team (and that may include the Bucks). To prove that he can win at the TOP level. Because people think he couldn't.
Dude, Spurrier left the Gators. Tressel is not as revered in C-Bus as Spurrier was in Gainesville. Spurrier is their Woody there. Never say never as far as him leaving.

Exactly 100% True and i agree, you took the words right out of my mouth as i were saying the exact same thing.
Sure we don't see Crennel or Tressel behind in the lockers or off the field alot, but every chance i have seen Tressel at my work eating dinner with his family and friends, he seems to be pretty humble just like he is on the sidelines and at a press confrence.
Tressel is a great College coach, making great money just as much as he would make with the Browns, unless hes on some mission to be one of the best coaches of all time in the NFL and NCAA, hes happy where he is i assume. Tressel's dream was to coach for OSU why would that change now?
Also i can see Tressel in a orange polo with a brown vest saying....."Well The Steelers are a great team, they have a great coach, a great defense and..." I could go on, on how he respects every team he plays, not saying we don't do that in the NFL, but not as much as we do in a NCAA. Is that a Cleveland Additude? More than Crennel? No.
Recruiting and Drafting are totally diffrent also, so is FA. Free Agents are not gonna line up to get a chance to play for Cleveland like they do for Ohio State.
Also his family, The Tressel family in Columbus...why would they want to move to Cleveland. His brother Dick Tressel is the Running Back coach and he might have more family members on his staff also.
I could go on and just repeat everyone else again, but please....stop the Tressel talk, no matter how bad you want Crennel gone. We don't need Tressel that bad to get rid of Crennel.

it's an interesting thought, but i find it hard to believe that tressel would leave osu, where he will become legendary just like woody...
i do believe that he could probably coach at the pro level, but it's such a cutthroat business, i don't know if he'd ever leave columbus...
if he thought about it, i'd hope he'd at least get a taste of what it's like in the nfl, and how things go, dealing with egos, 18 hour days, free agency, the draft... it's a tough business and it's not for everyone...

No, no and NO. I have been a Browns fan since 1964,...and an Ohio State fan since 68.
I can honestly say it is a lot more fun to have Tressel in the helm with Ohio State than it is to see the Browns suffer through continued poor management at every level, and subsequently I am probably a bigger supporter of Ohio State.
I would not wish the Browns job on Jim Tressel, even if he publicly stated this was his new goal. He would fail. He's too honest.

I hope he wouldn't prepare them for Pitts like he prepared them for Fla. Wow homerism at it's finest.

Tressel is a great college coach but IMO he would be horrible at the pro level.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

Check his record against that team up north. Check his record in big games. That national championship game was an abberation.
And no, I do NOT want him on the Browns sidelines. Although perhaps he could be "interim coach" during p*ttsburgh weeks .
