The Cleveland Browns have claimed S Montrel Meander via waivers from the New York Jets. In addition, the team placed WR D.J. Montgomery (hamstring) on injured reserve. https://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/browns-claim-s-montrel-meanderTough one for Montgomery. He was pretty good.

This explains the Braxton pickup a bit more .. we clearly like Montgomery but didn’t see him seeing the field this year ... stash him on IR
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I feel bad for Montgomery. He was playing well in my opinion. I liked how he highpointed the ball and he seemed to run crisp routes. Tough break!

I feel bad for Montgomery. He was playing well in my opinion. I liked how he highpointed the ball and he seemed to run crisp routes. Tough break! I feel bad for any kid who gets that far and the career is derailed for whatever reason. By the time you get to a pro camp or maybe AA in baseball, so many things out of your control factor in to who makes it and who doesn't. Sure, you have your clear superstars that everybody knows is going to make it. Then you have the other guys. The difference between the ones who make it and the ones who don't is pretty darn slim, and in many cases subjective or numbers driven. The team needs a corner or a 2nd baseman over a linebacker or outfielder. Another time and place, the roles could be reversed. It's sad to see dreams die. Some might get another shot. For some, it never happens. It's hard to keep that dream alive when you aren't making much money yet have to train 3-4 hours a day 300 days a year. At least the NFL caught on to that fact and put in a practice squad. Those guys guys make around $7000 a week during the 16 game season. Enough, unless they are stupid, to be able to concentrate on training during the off season. The guy who has to go find a job at whatever it is he is qualified to do, be it start selling insurance or working at the local mill, good luck with that.

When you watch shows like Hard Knocks or read the stories behind some of these guys. You pull for them.
Between college and the NFL there should be a "minor"league. Everybody knows the Kurt Warner story.
We have Gilbert. He looks like he can play in the NFL.
It has to very tough to cut some guys.

I agree. Baseball and hockey have invested in minor leagues for decades. Basketball for maybe 10-20 years now. Football, very little investment. Maybe it is because they can't draft HS players....all I know is baseball has been the gold standard of developing players. And hey, they don't run those clubs. Private owners do. They just provide the talent and maybe show up every 2-3 years to play a spring training game against another big league club. Also.....rehab.....I saw Clayton Kershaw strike out 14 3-4 years ago when he was sent on a rehab assignment....we were a affiliate of the Dodgers then. We are now back with the Reds AA club.

Maybe it is because they can't draft HS players It may have more to do with the shelf life of the players. 3.3 years average career length in the NFL -vs- 5.6 in the MLB. Guys entering a farm system in the NFL might not make it out again.

One indicator is every year quite a few undrafted free agents make rosters.
Some guys are bubble players and then get hurt in camp and get cut.
A Europe League would make sense since they are trying to expand the Brand.
I would think that the way it is today that a number of players get locked out of their chance to fulfill a dream.

Bummer for Montgomery.
I think Strong is now a shoe-in for WR and the competition is now open for Willies, Ratley, Miller. I bet Miller can also return.

I thought Montgomery looked good, tough for him. Is he officially on IR for the season?
I'm hoping d'ernest makes the team, thought he was solid in game 2.

D'Ernest is definitely giving Hilliard a run for his money.
Braxton may well be kept as he will edge Sheehy out as both WR and probably a returner. Callaway should feel very worried as Miller may even challenge his spot in the 4 games he is suspended. AND, he has the QB thing going for him if we are ever in a pinch. Remember that awful year when we went through all three QBs (RG3, McCown, Kessler) only to call Charlie Whitehurst while he was suntanning with a margarita on a pool inflatable? Dudes, we signed him that day and wheeled him out the following week (and, of course he got hurt!). Yeah, that is literally where we were not that long ago, folks!

There’s noise on twitter that we are trying to deal for Trent Williams ... four names have been thrown around on our side (Callaway, Schobert, Higgins, Kirksey)
If you are into the Twitter chatter, you know the “insiders” to go and look for

I think Strong has been more consistent than Willies, but Willies has a good reel of tape as well.

Not enough is being made of that the Browns just brought in Safety Montrel Meander.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Kirksey I could see because he is due to make more money than we will pay him.
The other three IMO should not be traded.

Schobert to the Jets would make sense on their end, but what could they have that we’d want? Not sure they have an abundance of OL or kickers

How does a league celebrating its 100th season only recognize the 53 most recent championships?

Ok with Callaway. I'd be most upset with Higgins, Schobert, and Callaway. Kirksey I would understand because of age, contract status, and I'm not expecting him to be on the roster next season. I don't get giving up three young talents for a guy that is 31 in the final two years of his deal. Callaway, even on suspension, has more long-term upside than Williams. Higgins could be a #2 on many teams (maybe in #1 for a few), is 24, and has improved each season. Higgins should be extended by the Browns. Schobert is a defensive leader, a great coverage linebacker, and IMO, should be extended by us as well. I would be pretty disappointed if any of those three players were a part of a trade for Trent Williams. It wouldn't make any sense to me. Edit: Scratch that comment about Kirksey's age. I'm shocked to see he is only 26. I don't know why I thought he was older. This changes my opinion on his involvement but I still don't expect him to be on the roster in 2020.

No way are we trading Joe, Kirksey or Higgins for anyone much less Williams ... and i’d Like to get Williams ....
Were built to win THIS YEAR .... NOW ...
No way are we going to trust the rookie LBer’s enough to let Joe or Kirksey leave now ... NO WAY ...
Higgins has way to much value .. no way does he get traded either ...
I could see Calloway ... he has a ton of talent and could be stud but the 2 cent head would make him a viable option if i was running the team ... KJ doesn’t seem to care one iota about character ... football ability seems to be al he cares about so i don’t see Calloway going now either ...

NFL Network just reported that Derwin James was placed on IR with a foot injury, and will be eligible to return week 9. I wonder if thy changed the IR rules again, since your article was written?

I wonder if Braxton Miller was brought in to see how he looks in comparison to Callaway. WR & Returner....keep in mind Callaway was also taking 2nd team reps all camp AND he is suspended. His spot on the team could be in jeopardy. No idea how Miller will look, but I guess we shall find out if he plays against TB.

I don't agree that Dorsey doesn't care about character, but do agree it isn't front and forward. It's pretty low on the traits in players he values the most.
