I found it intresting Phil named him # 2
Quinn 'excited' to be No. 2 Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer 09.12.2007 Brady Quinn's rise up the depth chart took another step Tuesday when general manager Phil Savage named the rookie first-round draft pick the club's No. 2 quarterback for the Browns' game Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The move came in light of the trade of Charlie Frye to Seattle and Derek Anderson's promotion as the team's starting QB.
Quinn took time Wednesday to talk about being the club's second-string quarterback and discussed what losing Frye will mean to the franchise and the club's quarterbacking unit.
"We're going to miss Charlie in a lot of ways," Quinn said. "Besides his athletic ability and what he was able to do on the field we're going to miss him a lot as a leader.
"I know the quarterback room will miss him a lot as a friend and with everything he was able to help us do in the classroom and from a preparation standpoint."
But Quinn also said the trade has made him realize how quickly things can change in the NFL and how quickly those things force players to adapt.
Quinn was listed fourth on the club's depth chart for the entire preseason and was the team's emergency third-string quarterback against the Steelers Sunday.
Now, he's one play away from experiencing his first regular-season NFL action.
"It's exciting," Quinn said of being promoted to the two-slot. "But at the same time you realize your role is a little bit heightened and you're one play away if anything was ever to happen. You just have to make sure you're always ready."
Head Coach Romeo Crennel said Wednesday it'd be good to get the young QB some time in the game Sunday for him to gain experience but the score and situation will dictate whether or not Quinn gets a chance.
With the departure of Frye, meanwhile, came the re-signing of veteran Ken Dorsey, who Quinn has openly touted as a positive role model in terms of learning the ropes of being an NFL quarterback.
Quinn said Wednesday he's happy to have No. 11 back in the mix.
"He's someone who has been a huge mentor to me," Quinn said. "He's been around and has seen defenses and coverages so he's able to bring a lot of insight in how to prepare."
Dorsey has spent his share of time on NFL sidelines carrying the clipboard, aiding his teams. Now, he'll continue to help groom Quinn.
But in the meantime, Quinn has spent time carrying the clipboard as well -- something he's not accustomed to doing. After starting nearly his entire career at Notre Dame, being a backup for the preseason and for Game One against Pittsburgh was a new feeling.
"I haven't done that for quite some time," Quinn said.
While standing on the sidelines, though, he's been able to get a better sense for just how fast play in the NFL can be and how much quicker and more accurate he needs to be than he ever was in college.
"You realize the decisions you make have to be quick," Quinn said. "You have to be very precise with everything you do not only athletically but mentally."
Quinn said he feels ready now, but doesn't necessarily expect that means he'll be thrust into duty anytime soon. He understands the waiting game he must play and the further developments he needs to make.
"I'm confident and competitive so I'm a guy who wants to be in there and thinks he's ready now," Quinn said. "But that decision's not up to me. I'll just wait and try to do my best and help this team the best I can until my number is called.
"(Right now) my job is to prepare Derek. My job is to prepare the defense on scout team and prepare myself to be ready if something ever was to happen to (Anderson)."

The #2 QB has to run scout team when your #3 QB dont have the skills to prepare the defense for Carson Palmer.

Exactly. Didn't we use Cribbs as scout team QB last year a couple times when we played teams with very mobile QBs?

"The #2 QB has to run scout team when your #3 QB dont have the skills to prepare the defense for Carson Palmer."
The above is totally incorrect. 1. Both #2 and #3 QBs will run the scout O in the weeks preparation. 2. The #2 QB will take about 20% of the reps with the starting O while the #3 will take none.
just an FYI

...that may be a generalized standard,....but I'm willing to bet BQ takes more than 20% of the snaps this week only because I think there's a better than 20% chance he'll play.

That might be the most telling statement of all from that article... I've been kinda against starting Quinn too early,, But like RAC said, the score and situation will dictate what they do with Quinn,,
I suppose if we are up by 30 in the 3rd quarter,, what the heck,,, same is true if we are down by 30 I suppose.. Give the kid a shot so to speak.
One thing has to be very very clear to Anderson,, he's the short term guy,,
Frye I don't believe ever accept that role, I think he really honestly thought he could win the job and keep Quinn at bay.

Well 17 you don't believe Andersons better do you, or should we refer to him as #3. The thing is if we're going to get rookie mistakes from Anderson why not let the rookie play. I know this part of our schelude is really tough, but i also think Brady can learn alot by being in there.
Cinni's D is probably the weakest of the 1st four and Oaklands O should keep us i that game. The Pats lets just hope he survives. It's deffently a tough start but i think in the long run it will make him better for when we get to the weeks following the bye.

I'm about 100% positive that Quinn is better than Anderson right now, but I also don't want the kid to get in until he is completely ready to go. If he knows the offense, which it sounds like he does, and can read the D's and know where the hot routes and weaknesses are, then he's ready to go. If he's still iffy, I wouldn't be upset watching Anderson play horrible for a few weeks if I know that Quinn will come in and light it up soon after.

Might just be me, but I certainly hope this was his attitude towards the situation, no matter how improbable. I wouldn't want anyone on my team that would lay down and just hand over a job.

I'm guessing some folks within the organization thought Quinn may have been ready prior to Sunday but #10 was being "punished" by Romeo somehow.
I'm getting the feeling that RAC really has a grudge against BQ.

I'm not sure Michelle. According to RAC,they would be throwing the kid to the dogs last Sunday. At least that IS what the man said. Now,only a few days later,if DA gets hurt,in goes Quinn. We have a coach who said one thing Sunday afternoon, and totally different thing on Wednesday! So either....................... a. RAC doesn't have a clue WHAT THE HELL he is talking about. or...... b. Somebody told him to do as he was told, like it or not. or...... c. A combination of the two.

Maybe neither. Maybe,, he felt like The Steelers D was a bit more intimidating for Quinn if he had to throw him out there Sunday, with no first string practice during the week against a D that was out for blood because they knew we had to pass. Compared to getting more time this week to prepair, with more first string snaps, after watching film of the real game Bengals D on film from the Ravens game. Not quite the "same thing" as throwing him in the game last week now is it ?

I think everyone was on the same page about starting Quinn against the Steelers and I agreed with it. I really didn't think that would be a good game for a rookie QB to make his debut.

I am not even really talking about starting him against the Steelers...I never expected that.
He will start soon enough and then we have it good or bad for 2-3 years...so a few games here doesn't really matter.

Not a bad premise........................IF Quinn wasn't our #2 QB going to this schedule against the Ravens D,New England D and so on.
Funny how EVERYONE was saying Quinn should be held out untill the "tough D" part of our schedule was over, but now the same people come up with everything under the sun as excuses why NOW it's no big deal if he isn't,don't ya think?
Yes,he's one snap away (due to injury) from starting with the Ravens and N.England D staring us in the face. So he'll be "thrown to the dogs" as RAC so properly coined it.
But now somehow that's "okay"?

Anderson's job could be temporary Browns QB starts for now, but Quinn waiting in wings Posted: Wednesday September 12, 2007 6:00PM; Updated: Wednesday September 12, 2007 6:00PM BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- Wearing a backpack, rookie Brady Quinn strolled into the locker room and quickly noticed the media cluster surrounding Derek Anderson, the Browns' starting quarterback du jour. Quinn stood patiently to the side and waited. His turn's coming soon enough. Normalcy, as much as there is anymore with the dysfunctional Browns, returned to the club on Tuesday, one day after they made history by trading quarterback Charlie Frye to the Seattle Seahawks for a sixth-round draft pick. Since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970, no quarterback had ever started an opener and been traded before Week 2. At least the Browns are first in something. Frye's abrupt departure -- he was benched in the first half of Sunday's 34-7 loss to Pittsburgh -- elevated Anderson, the loser in a summer-long competition with Frye, into a start on Sunday against Cincinnati and pushed Quinn up the depth chart from No. 3 to No. 2. Anderson's promotion could be temporary. The Browns plan to start Quinn, already being tabbed as the franchise's savior, at some point this season. It's a matter of when not if, and Anderson has a chance to control how long he's the one running Cleveland's offense. "I know my job and I know I've got to move the team," said Anderson, who went 0-3 in three starts last season while filling in for an injured Frye. "I've got to have touchdowns and I've got to control turnovers." And, he's got to do it with Quinn breathing down his neck. The former Notre Dame star is now just one snap away from taking over the Browns. General manager Phil Savage has warned that there will be "no turning back" once the club decides to play Quinn. That time may have arrived. The 22-year-old missed 16 practices during a training camp holdout, a stretch when the Browns installed much of their new offense. But Quinn, whose football intellect attracted him to the Browns, says he has caught up enough that he's ready to play. "I'm a confident guy. I'm competitive. I'm someone who wants to be in there, thinks he's ready now," Quinn said. "That decision's not up to me. I just wait and I try to do my best and help out this team the best I can whenever my number's called." If Anderson lays an egg like he did during a disappointing preseason, No. 10 could be summoned quickly. The Browns would like to keep Quinn on the sidelines as long as possible, but their unspoken timetable of keeping him out until at least the bye week (Oct. 21) has been accelerated by Frye's flop, an embarrassing eighth straight loss to the Steelers, and a need to win. Playing Quinn so soon has its risks. "Well, it can work out two ways," tight end Kellen Winslow said. "It could work out like Ben Roethlisberger and it could work out like Ryan Leaf. So you have to be real smart about it. Carson Palmer sat out a year and he's doing fine now. You have to be smart about the situation." How do you know when the time is right? "I'm not a GM. I wish I was," Winslow said, cracking a smile. "I don't know. It's gambling really, isn't it?" For now, Anderson is the safe choice for Browns coach Romeo Crennel, who yanked a rattled Frye before halftime on Sunday. Cleveland's offense never got untracked as the Steelers capitalized on early turnovers and built a 17-0 lead, forcing the Browns to ditch their game plan before halftime. Anderson, taken by Baltimore in the sixth round in 2005, had his finest moments last season coming off the bench. After Frye got hurt in a Dec. 3 home game against Kansas City, he rallied the Browns from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter for a 31-28 overtime win. The out-of-nowhere performance, and Anderson's cannon arm, convinced the Browns to give him a chance to beat out Frye this summer. But he couldn't, and now he's getting a second, and perhaps final, chance to start. "I expect him to play the way he played against Kansas City when we put him in the game last year," Crennel said. "I did tell him this morning that that's what I expect out of him." Crennel, whose job could be on the line if the Browns don't start winning, has been criticized for his handling of the team's quirky quarterback situation. At one point during camp, he flipped a coin to decide who would start the exhibition opener. Anderson called the competition with Frye "weird" and "confusing." Following Tuesday's peculiar QB shuffle, the Browns took more than their share of national ridicule for their apparent disarray. Crennel, a former defensive coordinator, defended the team's choices. "Everybody has a different perspective on the situation," he said. "They aren't in the building. They don't know what we talk about or what the plan is. Their perception is their perception. We're doing what we think is best and we'll move forward with that. "I have to work with the things that I have to work with. Frye and Anderson were my two choices at that time so we let them compete. I chose Frye, it didn't work out, and now I'm going with Anderson." At least to start. Copyright 2007 Associated Press. You've mentioned this in many of your posts and everytime I read it I think:
Isn't it atleast POSSIBLE that Romeo was referring to preparation time during the week? I have to think that being 2nd string now will allow him to run this week's offensive gameplan with the 1st team offense. This alone will prepare him THIS WEEK much more than just being the 3rd stringer and running the scout team, as he did last week.
In other words, last week he did little to prepare himself to run the offensive gameplan against the Steelers. Thowing him in would have been a disaster because he was unprepared for the offense plays we'd be calling. This week he'll get MANY more snaps running our offensive gameplan for the Bengals. He'll be prepared to play the calls our coaches make. Huge difference here: Playing a rookie that didn't get the prep time in practive vs. playing a rookie that has.
Of couse, you'll believe what you want.

Anderson's job could be temporary Browns QB starts for now, but Quinn waiting in wings
LOL,, the only way Andersons job isn't temporary is if he lights it up and wins every game.. !

Man you continue to reach..win every game..not even Manning will do that. Anderson just needs to manage the game well, score points and run the offense, not go 3 and out or 3 and a pick.
Course he's not gonna do that..
