Votes: 2,906 Roethlisberger tosses career-high four TDs in rout of Browns
CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers haven't changed a bit under Mike Tomlin. In their first game in 15 years without iconic coach Bill Cowher stalking the sideline, the Steelers looked the same while smashing and slapping around the Cleveland Browns -- again. Ben Roethlisberger threw a career-high four touchdown passes and Pittsburgh rolled to a 34-7 win in Tomlin's NFL coaching debut and embarrassed the Browns, who had a disastrous season opener at home. Willie Parker rushed for 109 yards as the Steelers started the Tomlin Era with the kind of bruising victory that typified Cowher's tenure in the Steel City. Cowher went 21-5 against the Browns, but Tomlin did something his iron-jawed predecessor couldn't: beat Pittsburgh's bitter rival in his first meeting against them. Cowher, who left the Steelers in January to become a TV analyst, lost his first game against Cleveland after replacing Hall of Famer Chuck Noll in 1992. However, Tomlin had his ... Vote

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Alex Smith and his San Francisco 49ers looked awful on Bill Walsh Field until the very last minute. Arnaz Battle scored on a 1-yard end-around with 22 seconds to play, and the 49ers emerged from an awful offensive night with an 86-yard scoring drive to cap a 20-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL's final opener Monday night. Smith looked terrible until leading that near-flawless march in the waning minutes for the 49ers, who beat the Cardinals for the first time in five tries during coach Mike Nolan's tenure. Smith finished 15-of-31 for 126 yards -- 60 on the final drive. The third-year quarterback also made a key 25-yard scramble, and Battle hauled in a gutsy catch at the 1 before running it in for the decisive score. Anquan Boldin ... Vote

HOUSTON (AP) -- This is the Mario Williams the Houston Texans have been waiting for. Last year's top overall pick returned a fumble for a touchdown, had five tackles including two sacks to help the Texans to a 20-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Matt Schaub had a successful, if a bit inconsistent debut in Houston, going 16-of-22 for 225 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The Texans led 10-0 when Jamar Fletcher knocked the ball out of Kris Wilson's hands which Williams recovered. The 6-foot-7, 285-pound defensive end got up and rumbled 38 yards for the touchdown. Linebacker DeMeco Ryans jumped on Williams to congratulate him, a far different celebration than last season when Williams endured endless criticism because ... Vote

SEATTLE (AP) -- Beware, the Seahawks' stars are well again. And so is a remade, hard-hitting defense. Shaun Alexander, playing pain-free for the first time since he broke his foot 12 months ago, ran for 105 yards and one touchdown Sunday in a 20-6 victory over Tampa Bay. Matt Hasselbeck was sharp in his first game following a mediocre season that included two broken fingers. Hasselbeck went 17-for-24 for 222 yards and threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Maurice Morris to clinch the win. Alexander's backup ran free down the left sideline past Derrick Brooks, the Bucs' defensive leader, to make it 20-6 with 7:55 left. The Buccaneers, who scored 10 points or less in eight games while sinking to 4-12 last season, fared no better in quarterback Jeff Garcia's first start for them. Tied at 10 going into the half, the vaunted Indy offense exploded for 24 points in the second half. Indianapolis' much-maligned defense didn't allow a single touchdown, and scored the capper on an interception return in the fourth quarter. "All offseason, that's what everyone talked about, that the defense has lost all these guys," said Peyton Manning. "A lot of young guys played good tonight. ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Steve Smith conjured echoes of the 2003 playoffs with another long touchdown catch that propelled the Carolina Panthers to victory and quieted a road crowd. Smith outsprinted Tye Hill on a 68-yard catch for the go-ahead play in Carolina's 24-13 opening victory on Sunday. As Smith eased into the end zone, Hill stumbled and then slid on his stomach for several yards. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Jon Kitna backed up his big boasts with a clutch fourth-quarter comeback and a couple of key defensive plays by Dewayne White. Kitna threw a go-ahead, 32-yard touchdown pass to Shaun McDonald with 4:15 remaining and White forced two late turnovers that helped the Detroit Lions rally to beat the Raiders 36-21 Sunday after blowing a 17-point lead. The matchup between the NFL's two worst teams from a year ago turned highly entertaining in the second half when former Lions backup quarterback Josh McCown led the Raiders on three touchdown drives to turn a 17-0 deficit into a 21-20 Oakland lead with 7:43 to go. Henry, who ran for more than 1,200 yards last season, left Tennessee for Denver in the offseason. The Titans did just fine without him. Brown found gaping holes in Jacksonville's vaunted defense, making the Jaguars look either out of shape or out of position on nearly every play. In a bruising season opener matching the last two AFC North champs, the Bengals were the last one standing -- barely. Kyle Boller took over after McNair strained his groin in the fourth quarter -- the last in a nonstop run of injuries for both teams -- and led the Ravens to the 1-yard line in the closing seconds. Shaun Suisham kicked a 39-yard field goal 5:36 into the extra period to spoil the NFL head coaching debut of Miami's Cam Cameron. SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Maybe this wouldn't be such a good Super Bowl matchup, after all. At least not the way the Chicago Bears and San Diego Chargers looked on Sunday. LaDainian Tomlinson and the Chargers finally took control of a sloppy season opener, with the reigning NFL MVP throwing for one touchdown and rushing for another in a 14-3 win over the defending NFC champion Bears. It's clear these two teams, each with high expectations, have some work to do. The Bears, who topped the NFC last year at 13-3 before losing in the Super Bowl to Indianapolis, were nothing short of brutal with four turnovers. Two of them set up the game's only two touchdowns. The Chargers, an NFL-best 14-2 in 2006 before their playoff pratfall against New England, had two turnovers and allowed three sacks. Still, Norv Turner came away a winner in his debut as Chargers head coach, raising his overall head coaching record with three teams to 59-82-1. Tomlinson threw a 17-yard TD pass to All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates with 45 seconds left in the third quarter, then scored on a 7-yard run with 9:09 left to play.
