Everyone says "I want the rookie quarterback holding a clipboard for a year!"

Then I started to wonder...what's the point of the clipboard and what do they write down? Having never played QB or even bothered to ask, I have no idea.

My best guess is they write the play that was called down, and then write down what they think the blitz and coverage was, and where the QB thinks he should go with the ball. Kind of like a written test?

I can't believe that you don't know that as much as you know about the QB position.

The QB is usually charting the plays and what the defense was in, the result of the play, etc.

hmmm, I used to play some QB, but back then clipboards hadn't been invented so we didn't write stuff down. And if I wasn't playing QB I was at WR or DB.

I kinda wonder now too. I would think CoachB is right, but I am sure they do much more right? Maybe jotting down possible upcoming plays? I never see them with the picture stuff of the previous play. That usually seems to go to the starters on the bench and the position coach.
I think it is a pretty good question.

I would say they aren't jotting down upcoming plays, but rather charting the plays that were run, defenses against, and results because that is useful 2 ways.....it allows them to see tendancies of the defense to a formation, personnel, and play. It also allows them to chart the offenses' tendencies as well. That is very useful in order to keep from being predictable in your playcalling and having the backup QB do it allows them to stay in the game mentally just in case they are called on.

You would THINK I'm right? How DARE you only THINK that

I saw a still picture of that, to go off topic, and it wasn't a "small" camera if it was a legit pic. This thing looked like one of CBS' cameras!

I haven't seen a pic of it or anything... had no idea what size it was, but it doesn't really matter...

How best to explain this. Clipboard.

Ok...maybe this will help

Its like the Tomorrows starting pitcher sitting in the dugout charting pitches. As they happen.

The inactive QB charts plays. Its to note possible tendencies the defense might have.
Down...Yardage...our formation...their formation...results.

I don't think it helps coaches too much anymore but it sure as heck should help the one making the notations. Repetition of some tendencies??? Coaches - no have film up the kazzoo to see all that.

Dead on, eo, except I was referring to noticing a tendancy in the game, jumping on the headset and pointing it out during the game. Film doesn't really do that during the game....unless your the Pats

true --- aha manual charting still is ahead of technology...lol

now some day one of these fools is going to develop a software program that they can chart everything...and then bing - half time press a button and out will come the halftime adjustments from all the data from charting...lol

Wouldn't surprise me.

Some of the play breakdown software they have right now is amazing, and on top of that they're starting to make animated playbooks. I'm really into the latter.

My first thought was that BQ was using it to hide his laughter at the lousy play of CF and DA. He would peek over at RAC sweating bullets and then at the other QBs running for their lives and wonder why the Hell he is playing behind them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Through my abuse of power, and my highly skilled talents of espionage (taught to me by Bond, Bourne, and Belichick), I have stolen the exact notes Quinn was writing during the Pittsburgh game.
