Trump administration readies ban on flavored e-cigarettes amid outbreak of vaping-related deathsThe Trump administration is preparing to ban flavored e-cigarettes as federal health officials call for restrictions to combat an outbreak of a mysterious lung disease that has sickened hundreds and killed at least six people, U.S. health secretary Alex Azar told reporters Wednesday. The Food and Drug Administration is currently finalizing its guidance to remove all non-tobacco flavors of e-cigarettes, including mint and menthol, from the market. Vaping companies like Juul have been criticized for hooking children on e-cigarettes with their fruity flavors like mango and creme. The surge in underaged vaping, which U.S. health officials have labeled as an “epidemic,” is one of the reasons why they plan to ban them — at least until the FDA can thoroughly review their safety, Azar said after meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on the issue. “The Trump Administration is making it clear that we intend to clear the market of flavored e-cigarettes to reverse the deeply concerning epidemic of youth e-cigarette use that is impacting children, families, schools and communities,” Azar, the Health and Human Services secretary, said in a statement. “We will not stand idly by as these products become an on-ramp to combustible cigarettes or nicotine addiction for a generation of youth.” It could take the FDA several weeks to develop the guidelines, Azar told reporters outside the White House with acting FDA Commissioner Ned Sharpless. Azar said they want to keep tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes on the market for adults who may be using them to quit smoking. “But if we find that children start surging into tobacco flavored e-cigarettes or if we find marketing practices that target children and try to attract them into tobacco flavored e-cigarettes, we will engage in enforcement actions there also,” he told reporters. The FDA was supposed to start reviewing e-cigarettes, a relatively new market, last summer until former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb pushed back the review until 2022. The FDA is finalizing guidance that would remove non-tobacco flavors until the FDA reviews them and clears them for sale. Preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s annual survey of teens showed more than a quarter of high school students used e-cigarettes within the past 30 days, with the “overwhelming majority” saying they vaped fruit and menthol or mint flavors, HHS said in a press release. The meeting comes as members of Congress increasingly pressure the administration to rein in the e-cigarette industry. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating more than 450 cases of lung disease officials suspect were caused by vaping. Some officials have honed in on a vitamin E oil that’s been added to some THC vaping products as a possible cause. Regardless, the outbreak has fueled calls to restrict the e-cigarette industry amid what regulators are calling an “epidemic” of teen vaping. Trump called on the FDA to get to the bottom of the outbreak. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/11/trump-to...ng-disease.htmlNot that I'm defending vaping, but I don't get this at all. If you are worried about vaping leading to smoking cigarettes, shouldn't you ban cigarettes AND tobacco flavored e-juice? And the illness/deaths are from THC bootleg vapes... why hit ecigs? This whole damn thing stinks of Big Tobacco and false flags IMHO. I used ecigs to stop smoking once, then had to kick those things too. Nicotine addiction is real, regardless of the source. But there is no mention of banning nicotine products... I just don't get this. AND 5-7 deaths I think are the total. How many people die from guns, cars, crap food, drugs, prescription meds, etc.? Yet 5-7 deaths triggers a national ban on a product that IS NOT the cause of the deaths? Somebody explain this reasoning. In Lancaster alone there must be at least 10-20 businesses that sell these products and over half of them sell these products exclusively. That's a bunch of closed doors and empty shelves. I can't even begin to imagine how many small businesses this will wipe out across the country.

Seems the article is pretty clear. They are concerned about the epidemic of teens getting addicted to vaping because of all the "flavors".

Yes, kids are vaping and those flavors they offered, like Bubblegum, were targeting kids.
BUT...
Federal officials on Friday advised people to stop using e-cigarettes, in particular those containing the marijuana component THC, until scientists gain better understanding of the epidemic of serious vaping-related lung disease that has sickened as many as 450 people and killed five people across 33 states.
The latest deaths were reported Friday by health departments in Indiana, California and Minnesota, following deaths in Illinois and Oregon. Officials say a large number of cases involve marijuana products.

Here's the part I find extremely troubling in all of this..... Juul targeted kids in its advertising and told high-school students its e-cigs were 'totally safe,' according to congressional testimony A US congressional hearing this week revealed new information about how the Silicon Valley e-cigarette company Juul marketed its addictive vapes to children and teenagers, helping spark a youth vaping epidemic. Juul, which is now part-owned by the cigarette company Altria, paid schools and summer camps tens of thousands of dollars to give presentations to students, according to documents made public as part of the House subcomittee hearing. The hearing's testimony included claims that Juul representatives once told teens the company's vapes were "totally safe."
Researchers previously found strong evidence that Juul marketed its sleek flavored devices to teens. That contributed to a youth vaping epidemic that has left more than a million new young people hooked on e-cigarettes, according to US health officials, who've since launched a crackdown on vaping.
The House subcommittee heard testimony this week from Juul representatives and health experts about the $38 billion nicotine vape developer, as politicians investigate Juul's role in youth vaping.
Juul sponsored health and anti-smoking events to get in front of kids
Juul sponsored youth smoking-prevention and education programs — including one called a "holistic health education program" — in high schools, summer camps, and public out-of-school activities, according to documents released by congressional investigators. The documents say Juul paid thousands of dollars, and even hundreds of thousands in some cases, to sponsor events and appear in front of children as young as 8 years old.
The hearing's testimony included claims that a Juul representative once visited a high-school classroom and told students that Juul e-cigarettes were "totally safe," according to a memo from congressional investigators.
Juul's strategy with its in-school programming drew comparisons to educational programs once held by big tobacco companies — a similarity Juul employees acknowledged, according to internal emails obtained by congressional investigators.
The congressional subcommittee also called out Juul's influencer program, which included more than 28,000 "social media buzzmakers," as a key tool in marketing products to teens."The donations and two student presentations we made were part of our short-lived Education and Youth Prevention Program which was ended in September 2018 after its purpose — to educate youth on the dangers of nicotine addiction — was clearly misconstrued," Juul said in a statement. The company says it's now working to fight youth vaping. Researchers at Stanford concluded last year that Juul's marketing campaign was "patently youth-oriented," thanks to a combination of launch parties, social-media blitzes, and vape giveaways. Another study showed that Juul's focus on placing ads across YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram — platforms full of teens and young adults — was successful in driving the company's sales growth. Juul says its products are for adults, and are better than tobacco Juul says that its products are designed to help adult smokers ween off cigarettes and turn to a healthier tobacco alternative and that the company does not target teens with its advertising material. Public-health experts, however, say Juul targeted teens online by evoking feelings of "relaxation, freedom, and sex appeal," as Business Insider has previously reported. According to several studies, young people who vape may be as much as seven times as likely to smoke regular cigarettes as teens who have never tried an e-cigarette. Congressional representatives aren't the only ones investigating Juul's marketing efforts. The Food and Drug Administration has also been investigating the company. https://www.businessinsider.com/juul-congress-e-cigs-target-teens-students-testimony-2019-7

The rest of it is about vaping products targeting children.

teens can and will get their hands on everything. and with social media markets and apps, its gonna be hard to properly enforce this.

The thing that really concerns me is if they try to do away with them, it will only lead kids to buy more of these products on the black market. From my understanding, it's these after market products that are causing most of these health issues. Not those bought from legal sources over the counter.

Until they can be FDA regulated and Big Tobacco can snap up the new 'approved' patents. The whole damn thing stinks because small business vape stores are killing big tobacco sales. When the alcohol industry targeted kids with gimmick drinks or african american communities with cheap malt liquor sales, there was NO BAN.
And Red Bull and other various 'energy' drinks have killed more people, yet they are on the shelves today. There is more to this whole thing.

Juul is owned by a tobacco company already. It was stated in the article I posted above. Juul, which is now part-owned by the cigarette company Altria

My guess would be because all those products you listed are FDA regulated with known recipes. Whereas these vape liquids are being produced by all sorts people/companies. I know of a couple people that produce and sell liquids to friends. No idea what is truly in it.

Yes, that is what the CDC is worried about with the lung diseases, the street liquids. No one knows what is in them.
I also read where vaping is plan-B by big tobacco. Cigs were plan-A and they have plan-C at the ready. Plan-C is a small cig that is inserted into a pen like device that heats the tobacco without burning it.
You get the tobacco taste and nicotine but none of the combustibles.

You get the tobacco taste and nicotine but none of the combustibles. Also considered vaping. They already have pen cannabis flower vaporizers. The difference, in the case of cannabis, is it’s heating the flower to point that the THC crystals ‘melt’ and produce smoke. Without combusting the flower itself into carbon ash. I’m sure it’s the same for tobacco. Though I’m not sure how heating it without combusting it renders the nicotine into smoke.

My understanding is it renders the nicotine thru vapor instead of smoke.

Danged Pot Heads ruined Vaping for everyone! Ohhh I have to claim BULLCRAP not one single case has been linked to Ohio's medical marijuana vapes. This crap is caused by companies adding flavors to vapes, and right now the government does not control all the crap these companies keeping adding to them.

Letter sent out in Ohio OHIO MEDICAL MARIJUANA CONTROL PROGRAM STATEMENT ON VAPING Dear Ohio Patients and Caregivers, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and several states are investigating the occurrence of severe lung disease among people who report “vaping.” The Ohio Department of Health is investigating five cases of patients experiencing serious respiratory symptoms following e-cigarette or vaping product use. The Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program (MMCP) has been in contact with the Ohio Department of Health on this matter. Currently, there are no known connections with vape products sold by MMCP licensees. The MMCP will continue to work with the Ohio Department of Health and provide updates for patients and caregivers. Updates from the Ohio Department of Health can be found here: https://odh.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odh/...ws-and-events/.As a reminder, anyone who thinks that they may be experiencing serious breathing problems linked to vaping should seek immediate medical attention. Patients can report any adverse events related to medical marijuana to the MMCP Toll-Free Helpline. To contact the line, please dial: 1-833-464-6627. The CDC, New York Health Dept and others are warning about the use of street produced THC vaping products and mom and pop shops. Evidence is showing the vitamin E many use to thin the THC wax has shown up in many of the THC vape products and those who developed disease.
The attack on flavors is an effort to keep kids from vaping.
The products produced by tobacco companies and healthcare agencies does not appear to be dangerous but facts are still coming in.
