They were common ads in comic books back in the day....did you ever send off for any?

Did you ever get them to hatch and grow like the ad said they would?

I did. They really work! I had some in college that I kept on the ledge above my roomates bed..she accidently bumped them one morning, and the whole thing dumped on her bed. We were both grossed out. Pretty neat looking creatures though, mine got pretty good size.

What the Hell were they though?

They still sell them here.

I got upset as a kid because mine didn't have tiaras on them like the cartoon ones on the box.

Also, my brother had a crush on the cartoon one.

The girl I think.

But who knows.

I grew some when I was a kid and then again last year for my 8 year old. They turned into a delicacy for his water frogs.

When I sent off for mine as a kid, I thought they would be just like the ad showed....what a disappointment. :-(

I never had a crush on them though, so I guess I gotta look at the bright side.

My best friend brought them up in conversation the other day, and that was the first I had heard them mentioned in years.....so I had to ask about others' experiences.

What a wonderful gift idea!

I named mine after all of the Brady kids. Greg, Peter, Bobby, Marcia, Jan, Thindy....man, you should have seen Greg and Marcia go at it!

Then they all died, so I consulted with my Magic 8 ball as to whether or not I should buy some more. Surely enough, the Magic 8 ball said "go for it!"

And so, this time around, I named them after the Partridge Family, thinking I might have better luck. After all, Keith Partridge could kick Greg Brady's ass in a heartbeat (that was my logic at the time....hey, I was only 7 years old). But alas, they all died too.

And so, I pulled out the Oujia Board to consult with it. And that was when all the dead Sea Monkey's came back to haunt me!

I haven't been the same since.

All they are is brine shrimp. I had them a couple times as a kid. If they get big enough you can use them as bait! It's really hard to keep a salt water environment healthy without a lot of filters and such though. Mine used to get maybe an inch or so and than start to die.

Exactly, and you can buy them frozen at most pet stores to feed your salt water fish too .

Nope.....no smiles, they didn't obey commands, nothing.

They just wiggled around.

I remember them, but after my Sea Monkey experience, I knew those things wouldn't work.

Plus...I was older when those came out. Sea monkeys have been around since the early 50's.....maybe sooner.

Well....I guess rocks have been around a long time too

Hey, don't knock pet rocks!

That was the best pet I ever had. Though I did have a pet T-shirt that was close. No pee stained rugs, no sloppy mess around the food dish, no whining to go out. How can you beat that?

Pet Rocks were a 1970s fad conceived by Los Gatos, California advertising executive Gary Dahl. The first Pet Rocks were ordinary gray pebbles bought at a builder's supply store and marketed as if they were live pets. The fad lasted only about six months, ending with the Christmas season in December 1975; but in its short run, the Pet Rock made Dahl a millionaire.[1]

In 1975, Dahl established "Rock Bottom Productions", a company that sold the rocks for US$3.95 each. The pebbles, imported from Rosarito Beach in Baja California, Mexico, were swaddled in excelsior and nestled in a small cardboard box, similar to a pet carrier. A "Pet Rock Training Manual," with instructions on how to properly raise and care for one's newfound pet (notably lacking instructions for feeding), was included. The instruction manual contained several commands that could be taught to the new pet. While "sit" and "stay" were fairly easy to accomplish, "roll over" usually required extra effort on the part of the trainer. "Come" was found to be impossible to teach reliably. People who purchased these unusual "pets" often gave them names, talked to them, petted them, and taught them to perform simple "tricks"

I was in my late twenties by then.

I had gotten over the false ads of childhood and was trying to cook entire meals in my Bamboo Steamer.
