Looking for some opinions and feedback here...

Over the last 15 or so years, I've probably had about 8 cars or so, and all but one - a truck - have been manual transmissions.

That's what I learned to drive on, and I fell in love with the way it feels to push in the clutch and shift through the gears when driving. I love to drive, and I love cars. I normally wouldn't buy a car if I can't get in a manual.

So I've been thinking about getting a new car. Stopped by the dealership and test drove a car that I've had my eye for a little awhile. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed, partly because I didn't like the way the cabin felt...too tight.

So the sales guy says you should check out the next model up...still sporty but a bigger cabin with some more space. I absolutely fell in love with this car, but with one catch...they only make it in an automatic. It does have that auto w/manual shift option...but...it's just not the same.

Has anyone gone from a manual to one of these auto w/manual options? If so, did you regret it later? Is there anyone else like me that loves driving a manual? What would you do?

Thanks for the feedback.

I love driving a manual car It feels like you are in complete control. I have a 6-speed too which is pretty cool.
I have never tried one of those auto w/manual options so I can't speak about them but if it was me I might not do it. Like my bro-in-law has a 240. It's a sweet looking car but it's automatic which means it sucks, like a bike with it's training wheels on forever

I, like you, learned to drive on a manual. I love manual shift. However, the traffic where I live now convinced me to get an automatic.

I miss the manual every once in a while, but a nice V6 automatic is a A-OK!

It's really a judgement call you gotta make. If you like the car, then who cares? If you ever miss the shifting, you can use the manual option. It is definately not the same, but it fulfills the urge!

Don't manual trannies get/give better gas mileage ?? That might be a consideration.

I learned to drive on a stick too. After driving several years in DC traffic, I'm sold on automatics, especially in high traffic areas. The manual/automatics are close to being manual, but without a clutch. If you're really in love with shifting, look for that manual transmission.

BTW, I'd never have an automatic on a 4x4. You lose too much control if you're off road.

I have a 16 year old 300 ZX with a stick and I just love the car... 190,000 miles on the car and it runs Great..

I've had one car with one of those Automatics that you can shift,,, 1971 Volkswagon Super Beetle,,, it was one of those stick shifts that really wasn't a stick shift... you just tapped it and it changed gears... however, if you leaned on it just a little, it was like pushing in the clutch,,, Very Very wierd... Hated it..

Rish, if you love the car, don't let the tranny influence you... if you enjoy it,, have fun...

I have manual as well. It's more fun to drive. Only drawback is driving in traffic and being on your cell phone. I hate talking on it when I'm trying to make a turn and shift at the same time.

I drove manuals for years, but I will never have another one After driving a stick shift to work for six weeks with my left arm in a sling, and a cast on my right arm, I gave up on those suckers

You lightweight. I used to smoke cigarettes and drink coffee while driving a stick.

Yeah, you really shouldn't do that. You know that it could be bad for you....

The smoking that is

I think most people evolve from manual to automatic.

Manual's are a few thousand cheaper, which means someting early in life and become more of a pain in the butt as the years pass.

I know, feel of the road and all, but it becomes a pain to shift in traffic.

My old weekend truck is a standard 5 speed...and I do like to drive it for a while....like the 30 miles I put on the thing each week running to the hardware/garden store...other than that, I will drive one of my other two cars that have a automatic transmission.

I'm a manual guy. I may go with the CVT transmission on my next car (either a new evo or new ralliart when they come out). I'll test drive them and see how I feel about it.

I drove a manual for more yrs than i care to remember. I still like driving them. But i would much rather drive an automatic now. The shifting in traffic never bothered me as i learned to drive with a stick, but still over time it just feels more relaxing in a automatic.

I drive a manual. I'm not in love with the feel of my car -- the clutch, the stick. Wish I would have gotten automatic. It would have also increased my towing weight capacity, but I didn't know I would want to tow when I bought the car. Of course, if I could change it, I would have never have bought the car I bought. Oh well...only five years left.

Peen, I agree with this. However, I'm not sure I'm ready to cross over yet. I still enjoy my manual even in heavy traffic.

To Everyone: Thanks for the feedback so far.

Does anyone have a car that has this auto w/manual option?

If so, do you use it?

Does it do enough to really replace that feeling of driving a manual with a clutch?

It's just normal progression.

You don't see many Cadillac's with a stick.

As people get a family, they need more room and need to tend to the kids some..and a manual just isn't good for that.

To me, a manual is only good in a real sports car or as I have, some sort of truck you want to bang around loading up a pile of mulch or loading some straw bales to cover freshly planted seed.

Not to mention cars with a stick tend to be smaller...and as your butt widens, small cars don't work as well.

Every one of my vehicles that i've owned since I started driving have been manual transmissions with the exception of 1 vehicle that was automatic and I had tranny problems 1 year after purchase, never had 1 problem with a manual tranny. Plus you also get a little better gas mileage with Manual Transmissions over Automatic and not to mention better performance because there is less components with Manual the engine doesn't have to work as hard to turn. Manual is the only way to go for me.

My qife has a Nissan Altima SE-R has the auto w/manual option.

And it's nothing like a true manual, it will even upshift automatically if you don't in time.

I think it depends on the car, and your situation if you should go ahead with the manual. I have a Mustang GT with Manual, I drive in moderately heavy traffic daily, and sometimes it's annoying, but when I get to open her up, she's nothing but fun to drive.

My hubby's opinion (since I don't like to drive a manual tranny):

He LOVES manuals and will only buy cars with manual tranny. He's even due for a new car this fall and we're expecting our first baby and he'll still only buy a manual.

As for the auto/manual shift option, he does not like those. The reaction time from your shift to the actual shift in the tranny is too long. And as someone else pointed out, if you don't shift (get into the higher RPM's) it'll do the shifting for you.

Personally, I like that option (as I've had it on some rental cars), but I think that's due to my not like manual tranny anyway. It made feel like I was driving manual without having to use my concentration on the clutch and the actual shift. But again, I'm not a manual tranny kind of gal anyway.
