The Area 51 raid was supposed to be today too. Probably taking away from the climate change strike since it's the same audience.

I wonder how many of them drove to the strikes.

It's supposed to be hard! If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great!

I wonder how many children would have shown up on a Saturday.

I have great respect and salute those who did participate in the strike. Portland had approx. 10,000 attend and many of the high school kids either walked there or took the train into downtown.

Missing one day of school to engage with their community, participate and use their voice is a worthy pay off. Any adult who is cynical is clearly part of the problem and thankfully the kids care enough to try and fix the mess that adults have left them.

I wonder if you'd feel the same if they were given the day off for a pro life march. Most of these kids were there for the day off, nothing more.

‘We will make them hear us’: Millions of youths around the world strike for action

The strikes come three days before world leaders are set to gather at the United Nations for a much-anticipated climate summit

NEW YORK — In one of the largest youth-led demonstrations in history, millions of people from Manhattan to Mumbai took to the streets around the globe on Friday, their chants, speeches and homemade signs delivering the same stern message to world leaders: do more to combat climate change — and do it faster.

From small island nations such as Kiribati to war-torn countries such as Afghanistan and across the United States, young people left their classrooms to demand that governments act with more urgency to wean the world off fossil fuels and cut carbon dioxide emissions.

“Oceans are rising and so are we,” read the sign that 13-year-old Martha Lickman carried through London.

“Whose future? Our future!” shouted students from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Md., as they made their way to the U.S. Capitol.

“I hope the politicians hear us. They don’t really seem to be doing anything,” said Albe Gils, 18, who skipped school to join the crowds of protesters in front of Copenhagen’s copper-towered city hall.

Despite a monumental turnout, it’s not clear whether the demonstrations can influence the global forces contributing to climate change or compel leaders to make the choices necessary to halt the world’s warming. But transformative change is precisely what the marchers demanded — including a swift shift from fossil fuels toward clean energy, halting deforestation, protecting the world’s oceans and embracing more sustainable agriculture.

Friday’s strikes, which spanned more than 150 countries, were largely planned by teenagers and arose as a grass-roots movement. They came three days before world leaders gather at the United Nations for a much-anticipated climate summit. U.N. Secretary General António Guterres has insisted that countries bring with them promises of meaningful action, such as vowing to reach net zero emissions by 2050, cutting fossil fuel subsidies and ceasing construction of coal-fired power plants.

The summit will offer a key test of whether the world’s nations, which came together to sign the Paris climate accord in 2015, can actually muster the resolve to scale back carbon emissions as rapidly as scientists say is necessary to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

A growing amount of research suggests that young voters in democracies are increasingly frustrated with political processes, which they say have failed to address their concerns, most notably climate change.

“I have the feeling that politicians are often just [focusing on] the next vote,” said 25-year-old student Jakob Lochner, who was attending the protest in Berlin. “If you look around, there are so many people on the street; there is kind of a social tipping point.”

In Australia, where hundreds of thousands rallied in Melbourne, Sydney and other cities, inaction on climate change and environmental degradation has made young people lose “faith in our leaders and decision-makers,” according to a UNICEF report this year. Researchers examining the same phenomenon in Europe reached similar conclusions. Almost half of all young European respondents said in a recent survey that they have no trust at all in politics.

The young protesters are part of a generation increasingly vocal in demanding that leaders take climate change more seriously. The demonstrations came more than six months after hundreds of thousands of young people staged a similar coordinated effort.

In London, tens of thousands marched past 10 Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament, some holding signs reading “Winter is NOT coming” and “I’m taking time out of my lessons to teach you.”

“We’re doing our bit, eating less meat, using less plastic,” said Lickman, the 13-year-old demonstrator. “But it’s still on the government to do something.”

Protesters in climate-conscious Germany held more than 500 events to mark the global climate strike, including a large demonstration at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate. The demonstrations come as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government faces increasing pressure to take bold climate action following heat waves and protests dubbed Fridays for Future throughout the country.

As the demonstration swelled, Merkel announced a wide-ranging package aimed at getting Germany back on track to meet its climate targets. Berlin has pledged to cut its emissions by 55 percent from 1990 levels by 2030. The package includes more than $60 billion in investment in such areas as trains, electric vehicles and subsidies for green buildings, according to German media.

In Moscow, Arshak Makichyan, a 24-year-old violinist, staged a one-man protest after the government rejected his application to hold a group demonstration, the BBC reported. Russia, which has been hit hard by climate change, ranks as the world’s fourth-largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China, the United States and India.

In Brussels, the young and not-so-young protested with signs in English, French and Dutch.

“I am here because we want adults to act,” said Caroline Muller, 13, who has protested in the past. “It is time to do something.”

In Washington, 35-year-old Allyson Brown pulled her 5-year-old daughter out of school and headed toward the Mall to join other protesters and impart a lesson on how to push for change.

“This,” she said, “is education for today.”

Among the largest, most high-profile protests was in New York, led by 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who has inspired the burgeoning protest movement with the solitary school strikes she undertook outside her country’s parliament beginning last summer.

Even before the strike in Manhattan officially began, Foley Square teemed with colorful signs and shouting teenagers, and the swelling crowd spilled into the surrounding streets.

“Climate change is not a lie, we won’t let our planet die,” the masses chanted.

“Our planet is not for profit!”

Organizer Alexandria Villasenor, the 14-year-old who helped spark New York’s climate strikes when she began protesting in front of the United Nations 10 months ago, smiled as she took in the teeming crowd.

“The strike today is going to change the conversation [at next week’s U.N. climate summit],” she said. “They have to listen to us now.”

In Battery Park, a sweaty throng waited beneath the fierce midday sun in front of a stage where Thunberg would later speak.

The speeches from teenagers criticized those in power, both in government and in the corporate world.

“Their complacency is killing me,” said Isabella Fallahi, a young organizer from Indianapolis, who said Democrats and Republicans are equally culpable for the lack of climate action. “Both parties are guilty of silence. Politicians don’t simply get a medal for believing in facts.”

Kevin Patel, a fellow youth organizer from Los Angeles, leaned toward the microphone: “You are either with us in this fight or you are against us.”

Thomas Jimenez, 16, Lola Allen, 15, and Crystal Lantigua, 16, juniors at Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, had raced to secure a place in front of the stage.

“Adults have a lot of opinions about our generation,” Jimenez said. “But I think we’re strong and powerful. It blows my mind to see kids our age make such a big difference.”

Behind him, a sea of handcrafted signs hinted at the sense of anger and frustration among his peers.

“You know it’s time for change when the children act like leaders and the leaders act like children,” read one.

“I’ll take my exams if you take action,” read another.

“Policymakers don’t get it,” said Yujin Kim, a 17-year-old South Korean student who had traveled to New York for a U.N. youth summit. “They’re not going to be here in 30 years. And we are. We’re going to keep speaking out until they listen.”

Organizers said more than 1,100 strikes took place across all 50 states on Friday. New York and Boston public schools granted students permission to skip school for the strikes. Numerous companies closed their doors in solidarity with the youths and encouraged employees to attend the strike.

After hours of marching and chants and speeches in New York, the sea of protesters roared as Thunberg finally took the stage.

“The eyes of the world will be upon them,” she said of the national leaders gathering next week at the U.N. summit. “They have a chance to take leadership. To prove they actually hear us.”

She paused.

“Do you think they hear us?”

The crowd screamed back: “No.”

She smiled.

“We will make them hear us,” Thunberg said, adding, “Change is coming. Whether they like it or not.”

Dennis and Lumpkin reported from Washington. Luisa Beck, Loveday Morris and Rick Noack in Berlin, Karla Adam in London, Michael Birnbaum in Copenhagen, Quentin Aries in Brussels and Timothy Bella, Dana Hedgpeth and Rebecca Tan in Washington contributed to this report.

Millions... GOPers are jealous because of the crowd size and turn out for an event that actually matters. The future looks bleak for the party of profit and greed. Their messages of hate, fear, and looking out for the rich are falling on deaf ears with the younger generations. Tick tock.

The youth are being indoctrinated with false science, and given a day off from school to show up and hang out with their friends.

All the ice was supposed to be gone 4 years ago. NYC is supposed to be underwater by now. Even your golden boy obumber just bought a house on the coast. Now the dems are talking population control. When they eventually take away your car, your ac, your food, your soda, and not allow you to have kids or grandkids, you just might see this scam for what it is.

Tinfoil? Every climate swami's prediction ever made has been wrong. We've had 10 years to fix the planet for the past 50 years. They blame everything from cow farts to plastic straws, and it's always the US that's the problem. Please grow a brain before these people have you eating nothing but plants and dead people to save the planet.

Your cynicism is exactly what the youth are fighting against. It's attitudes like yours that make youth not trust adults. I'm thankful that at 50 my attitudes towards the youth who actively participate in their communities and use their voice to show solidarity and strength as a uniting power is both energized and inspired by them. I don't look at Gen Z with skepticism or cynicism...I'm significantly more wary of the Baby Boomers & Gen X who refuse to listen to the overwhelming science and those who look down at the youth who have had enough of your generations BS and who are trying to make a difference.

It is a sad day in America to see our children indoctrinated and used by the Left to march through our streets like programmed drones for the cause.

They recently used the children for gun control too.

Makes one wonder what mission they will send the children on next.

They’ll probably continue on a mission to improve their future. To undo the damage the baby boomers, trump, and unfettered capitalism has caused. No need to ‘indoctrinate’. They want a better future. You and yours have no plan for that. Hence they won’t march for your continued insanity.

Lol. Bro, we got dudes on his board who are mad that people want a cleaner planet.

That’s absolutely mind boggling.

It's a funny thing to read on this board.

Parents choose to indoctrinate children from the time they are babies about a certain vein of their Christian religion. They teach them the Bible is true. They now teach them there is no consequence for trashing the very planet God blessed them with and provided them with. That man can pollute our air and our water and the great power they claim to believe in supports that choice.

As a result the birds, animals and planet is dying. And in the face of that evidence all they will do is deny. If what they're preaching about God is true, they will be judged for it one day and claiming ignorance won't help you.

The evidence is there and putting your fingers in your ear and screaming, "la,la,la" won't save you. One day the generations of the future in your family will be asking where you stood on climate change. And the answer that is given before they have to put their gas masks on to go outside will paint a very vivid picture of who you were.

I guess you forgot that your generation once marched through the streets and even became targets at Kent State when they demanded civil rights for all and an end to a war we should never have been in.

Oh yeah, I guess I forgot that when a lot of Boomers became adults they cashed their morals in for the greed of the 80s. thumbsdown

They also forgot about basic scientific principals from long ago. Or at leat pretend they have.

Newton's third law. For each action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

You can't just going around trashing the planet without consequences.

Oh, I have listened, studied, and watched. Climate change is a hoax. You should read up on it a bit more. Data has been manipulated to show a problem where there is none.

Think about it. How many of their predictions have come true? None. According to AL gore, we should have been ice free at the poles 4 years ago, and now the ice is growing. All glaciers should have been gone 5 years ago. Didn't happen. Some are growing, some receding, just like they always have. The east coast should be at the base of the Appalachians, and the Mississippi should be about 50 miles wide.

Have you ever heard of Michael Scallion? He's a psychic that predicted the exact same things would happen, but he said it would happen by the year 2000. The Mississippi would have cut the country in half, and the great Lakes would be inland seas by now if he was right.

These people want to control every aspect of your life, from what you eat, to where you live, to how you live, to how you travel, to how many children you can have, all in the name of "saving the planet". It's a farce.

If you're in your 50s, then you should remember the tread along the highways. The smog in cities like LA, NY, and others. The foaming rivers and lakes due to phosphates in soap. The burning river in cleveland. Love canal. The fact that nothing was recycled. The blight that every manufacturing city was. Things have massively improved.

Your claim is we can just keep polluting the planet with zero consequences. That doesn't even make sense from a basic standpoint.

Improved? Somewhat from an obvious standpoint. But since the Trump administration just repealed both the clean water act and the clean air act, we will be moving backwards again at an alarming rate from just what's obvious.

Yes, the poles are melting and the sea is rising. Nothing to see here.

I was born in '69....my memories of the Cuyahoga are from literature, photos and stories.

I will trust the Scientists who have dedicated decades of education & research to this issue over some ludicrous online right wing sceptics and conspiracy theorists with zero education of the topic or knowledge & understanding of the Scientific research.

Keep denying, however. Remember, you are the dinosaur and Gen Z and all of us standing with them are looking past you and your likes and will fight to make change, to value people & planet over profit and to protect, restore & fund environmental protection and climate action.

So, you're unwilling to do any research on your own, and enjoy being spoon fed climate alarmist propaganda. You do know the 97% lie is just another lie in this hoax, right?

Over the past several years I have put up plenty of data and web sites that refute this lie, only to have them dismissed by people that wish to be spoon fed. I guess you're just another one.

Please enjoy the communism, blight, and totalitarian society you will blindly allow to be built. I will be proven right in time.

Here's the funny part. The same climate change deniers we see now are the same ones who claimed we should be energy independent from middle east oil.

Not only would moving to renewable energy make us free from foreign oil, it would also help the planet. They can't seem to grasp the fact that those spoon feeding them are war hawks and the industrial military complex Eisenhower warned them about back in 1961.

Why would anyone keep wishing to use our current energy policy that ties us into wars over oil? It seems they would rather our troops fight and die on foreign soil than to follow a path that would end all of that.

Murica!

Eric said this...

It's already been built and he supports it. He's just too blind to see it.

Eisenhower was what I call a "real Republican". And people like Eric refuse to hear the warning he sent to them.

You would have the best, unbiased view of what is important to kids of different backgrounds.

The schools do not. Kids want to fit in so when they are praised for Leftist views and silenced for Conservative views, the truth is lost.

But all kids love a day off.

The most important things are:

Dating
Friends
School
Family
Dealing with life issues.
Hobbies

Not necessarily in that order. They dont act like a bunch of liberal mental cases. They act like young people trying to make their way in life. Every once in a while there is a vegan or preachy christian. Very many of them are lgbt, so they do talk about that a lot.

How arrogant of you to believe "you will be proven right in time". What is it that you do again? Oh, you have a day job, which I am sure you are good at, but I doubt it has anything to do with Climate or Environmental Studies. Yet, you are unwilling to listen to experts who have dedicated their lives and education to researching and looking at Climate & Environmental data. Weird. Just another example of how our nation devalues and disrespects education.

I would rather work towards correcting a situation that MOST experts believe in rather than ignoring due to a minority of skeptics and cynics such as yourself and the websites you spend time reading. I'd rather HAVE a clean planet than a dirty one that Capitalist extract and destroy everything in the name of profit.

So, no it isn't just middle/upper middle class white "liberal" kids that want to talk about this. It's ALL kids from ALL backgrounds.

Yet, correct me if I am wrong ErikinHell (tbh I don't remember you ever saying you were atheist or agnostic), but do you believe a book that was written thousands of years ago and take it as the gospel? Do you believe there is an all holy "god" who looks after us all because a book tells you so as has your priest/preacher/minister? Do you believe there is a devil who will take those who sinned and make them live in hell? And if so, why would you believe in this word, yet not believe in the word of Scientists?

If you do believe in heaven & hell and the bible then maybe that is what the "devil" is doing...they are sitting back sipping dirty martinis watching us do all the work by destroying the earth and enjoying the moment that it turns into hell due to our own doing.

But do carry on with your doubting of Scientific data and research based education.

And the kids tell teach exactly what he wants to hear.

Eve hears kids when they are not on guard.

I can only imagine your reaction to a kid saying Trump is the best thing since sliced bread.

How arrogant of you to say "Keep denying, however. Remember, you are the dinosaur and Gen Z and all of us standing with them are looking past you and your likes and will fight to make change, to value people & planet over profit and to protect, restore & fund environmental protection and climate action."

Experts? I guess you missed the Michael Mann scandal where he was falsifying data to prove global warming was real. Al gore is also a good example of an expert.

I have a suggestion. Why dont you muster up a group of those hero kids, give them trash bags, and see how many of them live up to the convictions you think they have, when they actually have to do something other than take a day off from school, hold signs, and chant what they're told.

If you really need to know, I was an astrophysics major in college. Any warming in the past 1000 years had more to do with the sun than anything else. In fact, you could put the sun down for the past 10,000 years.

Is he? I stopped eating bread a few years ago so I wouldn't know. What I do know is bread gives me the same reaction that Trump does. I also lost weight and am healthier today than I ever have been...so I look forward to the day Trump is no longer in my countries daily diet.
