Exactly the reaction I expected.

So, no it isn't just middle/upper middle class white "liberal" kids that want to talk about this. It's ALL kids from ALL backgrounds.

Pffft. You hear what kids say at SCHOOL. Youre the PoPo (a teacher) They parrot what YOU want them to say because that is what they are taught they must do to succeed.

I see the kids when they are away from their parents and teachers. When they are being their genuine selves. You might be shocked at what they say and do. Also, my community is international and from all walks of life.

And I can tell you, not one single young person has ever talked about "climate change" on my games.

I give teens a lot more credit than it appears many in here do. I talk to them as adults and treat them with respect. I am transparent and they are honest with me.

I invite anybody in here to spend a day in my school and you will be amazed by our youth. PortlandDawg has had the opportunity to spend time in my school & has worked with some of my students and I think he will verify and agree on all of the above.

But do carry on.

I'd refuse to let my kid do that. That's not what my taxes pay for.

As I heard someone else say yesterday; If you're walking to the march, you better keep walking to the McDonalds down the road while you're at it.

Keep in mind I live in Portland. Thousands of local teens did take part in yesterday's strike. But, the conservative media that you tune into paints us as HQ for Antifa. If your chosen media stereotypes us as some Socialist/Communist hotbed for Anti-Capitalists then why would you even assume that teens here support Trump?

I assume all free thinking American kids have an opinion.

I was also joking. I know that there are Trump supporters in Portland and throughout Oregon. I was making a point that the conservative media like to paint our state with one paintbrush. Who was the Conservative loudmouth who said they wouldn't step foot in Portland? Limbaugh? And, when the Malheur Wildlife Refuge was taken over by armed militants I read in this very forum from some of the right wing people in here that they were amazed such politics inhabited "commie" Oregon.

The history of Oregon is sad & deeply racist (as are many state's). That is also why Portland is the chosen city for Patriot Prayer/Proud Boys and other right wing hate groups to congregate. The Fascists and white supremacists are trying to make their point in a state and city that was once red and is now nationally viewed as progressive and liberal.

Oregon is a beautiful State with many hard working, good people.

Portland is a very colorful, Progressive city.
Unfortunately, the colorful comes from the multicolored tents of the homeless thanks to Progressive government.

Hahaha. Good one. If you think Portland and other Progressive cities are unique to homelessness then you are blind. Very blind.

Out of sight, out of mind? Is that what you prefer? At least our city attempts to treat them with respect and dignity as human beings rather than looking down at them. And, some of them may have left places such as where you live because they were treated poorly, unfairly and tired of people looking down their noses at them viewing them as a scourge rather than human beings just like you and I.

I am not blind and I am not deaf.
I see your homeless, I hear your laugh, but it is drowned out by the wailing and gnashing of teeth coming from those tents.

I'm curious.

Most organizations that help homeless people are led by faith based religious groups.

As someone you (who hates Christianity), how do you feel about that?

I'm asking because one time my business donated money to a homeless mission, and an athiest absolutely lost her [censored] that we would give money to a religious org who helps homeless.

I don't hate Christianity, Eve. You are correct, I don't subscribe to organized religion and see it as very problematic and hypocritical. That said, if somebody needs religion in their life for support or uses it as a guiding spiritual force and moral compass for themself...I have no problem with their choice to do so. And, I expect that they should feel the same way about me and what fuels my spirituality and moral beliefs.

I applaud anybody, including churches that help and those gospel missions that bed & feed our homeless. I have volunteered time in the gospel mission here in Portland, but unlike Vers I don't feel the need to start a thread about it to prop up my ego (especially considering how nasty he was in a response to arch when arch posted about some community service work he did & the positive reaction it had).

It is sickening, how the only remaining educated humans on planet earth, that deny anthropogenic climate are republicans and the south.

Why are young people taking their future so seriously? Why can’t they just sit on their asses and do nothing like old cranky people?

Lol, young people wanting the only livable planet we have to be cleaner. What’s next? Equality? Hahahahaha

Bro, I don't think it is fair to blame old people for opposing environmental issues. Those same people were the ones who initiated all the green programs and making stricter environmental laws.

Not too long ago, Clem and I were talking about this on his thread about the plastic bag being found in the deepest part of the ocean. Bro, the skies in industrial cities were orange. There were 3 inches of soot on window sills. Forests were being ravished. Huge pipes dumped raw and toxic sewage into our lakes, rivers, and even oceans.

Those "old" people who were younger at time are the ones who brought more change in regards to protecting the environment than any generation before or since.

Protecting/trashing the environment is not an age thing. It's a greed thing.

I’m clearly talking about the old cranks on this board whining about it. You don’t have to take everything I say as a personal shot.

Not being confrontational Vers, but I thought you would definitely be supportive of these kids. Maybe I'm just reading you wrong but it sounds like you agree with the boards trumpians that these kids are being used or just taking advantage for a day off from school. Again, maybe I'm missing something so just curious where you stand on the thread subject.

To answer your questions in order:

Because they're told daily by a bunch of lunatics, "you're all going to die in 10 years."

Old people put all the clean up in motion. We did our share, and it's never good enough for the loons.

What's next? The loons want us all living like peasant farmer, apparently. We'll have to get government permission to have children. They'll regulate or daily lives down to our meals, where we live, and how we live.

I am a huge advocate for peaceful protests that are designed to invoke change. It's one of the few avenues where the people can actually be noticed and get things done. Thus, I do support the kids who were there for the right reasons. I think it's actually very inspiring.

When I was in 7th grade, ABC put on a documentary showing what would happen if we got into a nuke war with the soviets. The Norfolk, VA was 3rd on their hit list, due to the largest navy base in the world. I actually put an end to the "get under your desk, put your head between your knees, and kiss your butt goodbye" drill, as I debated our teacher on the futility of it, as the soviets would have showered our area with nukes.

That little aside being said, I believe it explains why some of us 'old' people don't believe this climate change crap. For people my age, your death could come at any second, in a flash of light and heat. The kids now have 10 or more years.

Through the years I had to live with my imminent death constantly hanging over my head, I don't recall us ever getting the day off from school to protest. We even had a more assured "end of life on this planet" scenario than any of the kids today, and a bigger threat.

Now I watch these ill educated kids get a day off to protest a for a farce, and implement a governmental system my generation fought to get rid of, and the loons wonder why we don't like it.

To be fair Erik, every school district in every corner of the nation handled Friday's Climate strike differently. Here in Portland letters were sent home telling parents they would be marked unexcused. Some students were clearly fine with that as a "penalty" for doing what they believe in as they showed up for their first class then walked out at 10am to make their way to downtown. Others had their parents call in and excuse them by fibbing (saying they were sick etc.). I don't know how the school district in your area handled it, but it may have been similar.

NYC had so many students planning to walk out they had to make a stand and decided they would excuse them all. I have read tho that the NYC school district is debating about adding a day to their calendar as a make up day for Friday's mass walk out.

you guys were the ones who polluted it to begin with, and continue to do so.

its like you want us to give yall credit for a problem you created in the first place.

thats like saying you want credit for getting rid of weed laws, even though yall are the ones who was locking up people over weed to begin with.

you want credit? here. thanks for taking your sweet ass time to finally recognize a problem you were actively part of.

thats about as much credit as you're gonna get.

jc

we had energy companies back in the 70's and 80's writing their own reports about the future effects of climate change/global warming their companies would have. and yet we still got people talking about its a hoax.

this is why the convo is so funny. we got guys who talk about it being a hoax, but when it comes to the same companies that ALSO admitted that global warming is real, all of a sudden they turn into ray charles.

then got the nerve to talk about selective research. thats why people (mainly read: Erik) cant be taken seriously, as they are the most selective out of anybody.

Houston is being flooded AGAIN. just a light drizzle and miami sees flooding. the caps are melting, sea levels are rising, and all we get from the peanut gallery is "its a chinese hoax!!!"

and then whats worse? they will use the hoax rhetoric as a reason to not even want to clean up the planet, then want to talk in hyperbole talking about "they want us to live like peasants!!!"

no, how about we dont want the freaking POTUS to block states from trying to raise emission standards, the SAME standard these car companies WANT them to set?

how about we actively try to recycle and such, that way our plastic isn't ending up as a freaking island floating in the middle of the ocean, destroying marine life?

how about we stop acting like scientist didnt find A FREAKING PLASTIC BAG AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MARIANA TRENCH?

i mean damn guys. we are so disgusting as a species, we LITERALLY got a ring of TRASH orbiting our planet. do yall not realize that? thats freaking disgusting.

we act less like animals and more like viruses. an intelligent species understands that while yes, certain industries were needed to develop our society, that doesnt mean those industries needed to be PERMANENT. an intelligent species understands that as the alpha species, we need to make sure our ONLY planet is protected as much as possible.

an intelligent species understands that we cant keep destroying our planet and expecting nothing to happen.

instead, we got so-called smart people actively blocking simple things like just wanting to keep our planet cleaned up. all because of corporate profits that they dont even benefit from.

instead, we got so called intelligent people talking about living like peasants, when us liberals are simply talking about using more renewable energy sources and continue investing into electric cars. but somehow to the so called smart guys, that translates into everyone living like cave men.

stupidity at a whole new level.

i never seen so many people argue in favor of their corporate slave masters pollution in my life. its absolutely pathetic and you will get zero respect from me.

man screw it im ranting.

we got guys out here acting like "well, stop using AC and stop driving cars", some of the dumbest talking points in my life.

simply by buying a newer car, you're helping the planet by driving a car with less of a carbon footprint. these dodge rams of 2019 have less of a carbon footprint than a ram from 1999.

its that simple. we have energy efficient windows. we have solar panels. we have wind farms and such. invest into that.

simply progressing FORWARD is fine. but being stagnant, or in some cases, going BACKWARD, like repealing clear air and water laws, are freaking stupid. instead of building houses that spread out, how about we start building UP. more and more people are renting, and we have the most creative designers in the world who can build really cool housing divisions that are energy efficient that a lot of young people, who DONT want to buy houses, will love.

we got companies pushing hybrid tech, and even our pickup trucks are getting great gas mileage lately. thats due to consumer demand in conjunction with progressive energy standards.

and more importantly, im tired of people on this board and other places talking about "Well, what about china"

WHAT ABOUT THEM? since when did yall give two crap what other countries think of America? now all of a sudden when it comes to cleaning up the planet, instead of being AMERICANS and taking the lead, yall wanna look at other countries as an excuse to do nothing?

trash. absolutely trash ass rhetoric coming from conservatives. im sick of this crap. people always talking about "i dont care what other countries think", until all of a sudden, yall care what other countries are thinking.

Wrong. The factories, sewers dumping in rivers and lakes, coal plants, lead gas, and every thing else was already here before I was born. I don't even care about credit, but I do care about truth.

If these little 'saviors' really want to do something, they should gather at the Chinese consulate/embassy or other Chinese entities to protest their pollution. The US is sparkling clean compared to them. Hell, 1/3 of so called carbon pollution comes from china, and the majority of plastic in the Pacific comes from south east Asian countries. We get a bunch of people whining about the US dropping the Paris accord when china, India, and other actual polluting countries never meant to follow it in the first place. It's a hoax.
