Our team has a losing record and that has understandably caused friction on the board due to our high expectations for this year.
So, I thought I would start a thread where we salute some other people in the NFL. It's football and it should be a nice, light topic.
Salutations:
--In my opinion, Quenton Nelson is the best offensive lineman in the game right now. He is a guard, but he reminds me of Joe Thomas w/how technically sound he is. Unlike Joe, this guy is a mauler and has a real mean streak. He abuses people both physically and w/great technique. He's dominant.
--Sean Payton is proving why he is perhaps the second best HC in the NFL. He lost the great Drew Brees, but he has adjusted and built a good plan that helps Teddy Bridgewater succeed. The Saints are undefeated in TB's three starts and they have played very good competition.
--A lot of people were trashing Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock, but these guys are doing a nice job in Oakland. They have a winning record despite the distractions and the players are believing in the system.
--Kyle Shannahan is a guy I really liked when he was here. I think I was the only dude on the board defending him at the time. I really didn't like the hire based on what I had read, but he quickly won me over because I have a bit of knowledge on play calling and scheme. All these guys are pretty damn good, but Shanny stood out. His route trees and building blocks approach to play calling were superb. They still are.
I have more, but I don't want to hog it. What do you guys think. You can go w/all new people or use some of the guys I listed. Let's just talk some football.
New England lost their DC to Miami (Flores, Head Coach) and through 5 games are allowing only 6.8 points per game. Yes, that's right, less than a TD allowed per game. (and a full TD per game better than 2nd place Chicago)
No matter who they have played thus far, that's just incredible.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

- We are in the worst division in football. It will be sad if the Ravens win this division (and right now they have to be the favorites in Vegas I’d assume)
- The Redskins team is a complete dumpster fire right now (at least the dolphins are TRYING to be bad)
- Surprised that Oakland has had some early success
- Buffalo is a legit threat ... great defense and timely offense
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."
He is one incredible player. I really wanted him in the draft. Not sure we could use him well though. Good for the game. Like a Patriots player on another team.
My hat remains off for our own Hammer. Well played!

man i was hyping him up in the draft when so many people were trashing him. Dude was already Barkley before Barkley.

Nobody questioned Shanny's offensive intellect/talent. The negativity surrounded his personality. At the end of the day, I might just be splitting hairs, but I feel it's important to be clear on this. I loved Shanny the OC and playcaller, but was very leery of Shanny the coach and leader. I say that, obviously, by removing the benefit of hindsight. I said it before in another thread, so I'll say it again here. A very small portion of people that are as arrogant and hard to work with as Shanny really are that smart and talented. Shanny appears to be one of those.
I salute our own Nick Chubb. Dude is a beast and a rock. Guy comes in each game, grinds out his 5+ yards/carry with a calm, even confidence. I hope he eventually (if he hasn't already) steps into more of a leadership role in that locker room and the offense. We could use more of that type of attitude.
"I'll take your word at face value. I have never met you but I assume you have a face..lol"
The last time our team looked like the 9ers did on Monday night was a Thursday night game under Mike Pettine. QB was Hoyer. OC was Shanahan. Complete domination. For some reason that thought popped into my head this week and thought it was interesting.
Small shout out to Gruden in Oakland. I really thought Raiders were going to be a dumpster fire this year and that Gruden wouldnt have it any more .... he's got his team playing better than id have thought.

Same here ... they’ve really surprised me. They honestly might be a WC contender due to the fact the Chargers don’t look as strong and are injury riddled

Nice thread idea Vers. Maybe we could try something like tis is the politics section.
One of my choices is kind of strange. Joe Mixon. I had a really negative opinion coming out and laughed when the Bengals took him but he has played well behind a more than suspect OL. He has not run his mouth (at least not that I have heard) other than remarks that to me show leadership.
Jacoby Bissett has impressed me when watched him this year.
I am no technician analyzer for OL play but agree with you on Nelson. I recall a lot of discussion debating if an OG at pick # 6 was justified.
Kyle S sure knows how to get WRs open and RBs through huge holes.
Not saying he is a star but Jameis Winston has surprised me. I thought he was done but has played decent though.
McCaffery is another I thought be OK but not as impactful as he has turned out to be.

I think Carr had a down year (statistically wasn't even horrible. Not good I would say, but not terrible), and everyone jumped on the "he sucks bandwagon". He had just got that big deal and then had a down year, not understanding the difficulties surrounding him or the team at the time. (hmmm, might sound familiar to a situation we have here).
But I would shout out Carr as well, for being resilient and sticking with it, and getting through it. He's having a good year so far, completing 73% of his passes, 2-1 ratio, and on pace for just under 3500 yards. Not to shabby for a guy that was written off a year ago.
Also give a shout out to Matt Stafford. He gets a lot of hate, but hes been on a historically bad team (even thought they have had talent), and has put up some impressive numbers so far. At 2-1-1, they have been a surprise to me. Shout out to Patricia as well for seemingly turning it around (so far - lot of football left).
Edit to add:
As fortbrown pointed out, BIG shout out to Jacoby. Dude was in a Media Frenzy of a position coming into this year with the Luck retirement, and all he has done is have a heck of year so far, stepping up BIG TIME for that team, and keeping their playoff hopes alive, when many thought they were DOA.
And if I may one more...which hurts cause we are playing him this week....
Shout out to DangerRuss. Dude took some flack from people on his deal, people saying he didn't deserve it, or that was going to ruin the team and he wasn't good enough to carry a team, etc. etc.
He has done nothing since but have an MVP year, and I think probably a favorite right now for it.
Yeah, Barrett is a monster right now ... they are another team that has been better than I thought. Their beatdown of the Rams was crazy

I was touting Nelson like crazy before that draft and Diam (A Notre Dame fan) Kept saying he wasn't "All that and a bag chips" like I thought he was.

Not necessarily this game, but this pops in my head when I think of Shanny and Pettine...
Shanahan was so good here ... you could just tell the offense was crisp and focused. That was one of the few times where I always felt confident when we took the field

Totally agree. I was also confident last year when our Offense took the field after Baker started. This year, no so much unfortunately

Not only that - but for the first time (only time?) in an age - I always had confidence in Shanny making good half time adjustments and reacting to what the other team tried to take away.
The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.
Good point ... I dont know how many times we’ve been on the good side of halftime adjustments

I remember taking a beating on here because I was defending him. Where were you guys, then? It was pretty much me against a slew of people on that topic.

haha nope I was with you (but I was also wrong about quite a few things too)

We are all wrong about a lot of things. Not a big deal. I just wish that you guys would have spoke out when I was getting attacked for defending Shanny.
LOL..........I better make this clear. I am not mad or upset. I just think it is kinda funny and if you were able to hear my tone of voice, you would get it.
Anyway, how about we get back to saluting some fine play/coaching around the league? I'll add one dude in my next post.
Darren Waller and Josh Jacobs are two young players who are doing a nice job for the Raiders. Waller is a TE and Jacobs is the rookie RB out of Alabama. Both have made a lot of big plays for Oakland.
I think I've always been a fan of how Shanahan ran his O... especially his zone run scheme. I didnt like his personality and thought he was not really a team player from the FO perspective.... knowing now what was happening with Farmer etc its much more understandable.
The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.
Big fan of Shanahan. When he quit I wished we had promoted him to HC instead.
I also loved Garropollo coming out of college (a lot on this board did as well).
That's why it was extra painful being at the 49ers game watching what should be our team beat us down :-P
As for other shout outs around the league...
J.J. Watt... I know, maybe seem obvious but surprisingly few people are talking about him. He's still an unblockable monster even at this part of his career. Maybe the best of all time at his position?
Michael Thomas. Heard so many people chalk up his success to system/Drew Brees being his QB, but with Brees injured he's still tearing it up. I guess you could still give Payton credit for the system, but how good has the NO FO been over the past decade? They are stacked at every position. Should have 3-4 Super Bowl appearances.
Mitchell Schwartz - Too painful to talk about lol, He's so good.

This right here. Good point about Farmer. We kinda found out the extent of his shenanigans after Shanny bailed. Definitely paints Shanny's exit and attitude in a better light now that we know more of the dynamic that he was dealing with.
