GOP reps say Schiff stopped impeachment witness from answering certain GOP questions

House Republican leaders, in a fiery news conference Tuesday, said House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., prevented a witness in the latest impeachment hearing from answering certain questions from Republican members.

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, told reporters that Schiff shut down a Republican line of questioning during a hearing with Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the latest current or former Trump administration official to come before Congress in relation to the impeachment probe.

"When we asked [Vindman] who he spoke to after important events in July -- Adam Schiff says, 'no, no, no, we're not going to let him answer that question,"' Jordan said.

White House official says transcript of Ukraine call omitted key phrases: report

A White House official who testified in front of the House Tuesday as part of its impeachment investigation reportedly said the White House’s rough transcript of a July phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky left out key words and phrases.

Three people familiar with the situation told The New York Times that Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman testified to congressional investigators that among the omissions was Trump’s assertions that there were recordings of former Vice President Joe Biden discussing Ukrainian corruption and a reference by Zelensky to Burisma Holdings, the energy company on whose board Biden’s son sat.

Vindman, a top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council, also testified that he sought to change the memorandum of the conversation to include the omissions. While he was successful in making certain edits, those two omissions were not corrected, The Times reported.

While Vidnam did not identify a motive behind the omissions, his testimony is likely to fuel further speculation and questions from House Democrats as to how the July 25 call between Trump and Zelensky was handled.

The omissions do not alter the heart of the conversation, however, as the reconstructed transcript of the talk shows Trump repeatedly pushing Zelensky to investigate Biden, a top political rival, on unfounded corruption allegations.

Vindman expressed alarm Tuesday about the conversation, saying he twice raised objections to his superiors about Trump’s interactions with Ukraine.

“I did not think it was proper to demand that a foreign government investigate a U.S. citizen, and I was worried about the implications for the U.S. government’s support of Ukraine,” Vindman said in his testimony. “I realized that if Ukraine pursued an investigation into the Bidens and Burisma it would likely be interpreted as a partisan play which would undoubtedly result in Ukraine losing the bipartisan support it has thus far maintained.”

The testimony comes as House Democrats plan to expand their impeachment investigation into Trump into a new public phase.

The House is expected to vote Thursday to direct the Intelligence Committee to conduct public hearings and compile a report to help the Judiciary panel as it mulls filing formal articles of impeachment.

The impeachment investigation was launched last month into Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, with Democrats alleging that the president may have tied $400 million in military aid to Kiev to its compliance with Trump’s requests for an investigation into Biden.

Trump has maintained there was no quid pro quo with Ukraine, but William Taylor, who serves as the chargé d’affaires for Ukraine, testified last week that the aid was directly linked to a commitment from Zelensky to open investigations into Biden and 2016 election meddling.

What I heard (obviously I wasn't there) is that the line of questioning that was shut down was directed at trying to obtain the whistleblowers identity and was not directly related to the matteres at hand.

Trying to illegally expose the name of the whistleblower. And you applaud their childish hijinx. Shame.

Oh don't be silly. I wanted a link to the part of the constitution that says the whole house MUST be involved in the impeachment inquiry and not just led by Nancy or Schiff. But I knew you couldn't because that's not in there. It only exist in the weak minds of trumpian sheep.

There is a very good chance that will happen. And there is a very good chance that it will happen with dem majorities in the House and Senate. You think he will finish the second term in that scenario? We haven't even got all the facts from Mueller out yet, and there are new scandals linked to his existing crimes unfolding every day.

I find the way the GOP treated Colonel Vindman disgusting beyond all belief.

Neither of you should go forever. The ban should be for like 3-6 months after the 2019-2020 season ends in early 2020. Even though I don't agree with 40 politically, he's still a dawgtalker, as are you.

We've all done enough to run each other off the board. Trump will be gone soon enough, we don't need to be a 'forever' kind of harsh with each other. But 3-6 months of no 40 sounds pretty sweet at this point to me too.

Trump is using the lack of a vote to interfere with and obstruct witnesses from testifying and turning over documents. Once the vote is taken, he will no longer have that excuse.

But we all know he will come up with yet another excuse to obstruct and interfere. And we all know you will support that.

An investigation and the questioning of witnesses is not impeachment. You really need to quit lying about that.

It's odd how quickly you can see it when it's not Trump doing it.

Its not illegal. Countries and Leaders do it all the time.

We have our interests and use pressure to get other nations to do what we see as important.

We use Diplomatic pressure.
We use Tariffs.
We use Trade.
We even use Military Force when necessary in order to persuade foreign powers to come to our side of a situation.

You can't use leverage of money already appropriated by congress to further your own political purposes. Anyone and everyone with a brain knows that.

Quid pro quo is not inherently illegal. I just did a quid pro quo and hour ago. I went to McDonalds, gave them $5 and they gave me a big mac. Perfectly legal. If I go to a prostitute and offer her $$$ for sex, that quid pro quo is illegal.

I find it hard to understand how people do not understand these not so subtle differences.

That was a summary of the phone call, not a transcript of the phone call. You should know that. Some of the things said in the phone call that weren't in the summary were exposed yesterday by Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman.
