Well in light of CDawg's leukemia thread getting toasted and really just having a crappy week at work I really felt like putting up a cancer sucks thread!
I have had some very sad kids over the past few years that have had to deal with cancer and this week I've seen some of the worst. I saw a kid who a week ago was running around perfectly healthy and then began throwing up... came into the hospital and found out that he had a brain tumor the size of a softball in his cerebellar area... currently he can answer questions by putting up one or two fingers and he can sort of move his L arm...
I met a kid who was perfectly healthy until a year ago when he began to have a small beigin growth in his neck/head area... a month or two ago it turned malignant and is now the size of a football (probably bigger)... the docs tried to remove part of it but it kept growing.. on top of that he had a stroke during surgery because the tumor had taken so much of his blood supply... now he is hooked to a breathing machine, has no idea what is going on, and can only move half of his body
I've seen kids go through horrible pain... I've seen kids lose all their strength... their hair... their sanity... all because of cancer.... cancer truly sucks!
So in light of the leukemia thread getting axed I just ask that for those of you who pray to pray for those who are going through cancer... and when someone asks any of you to support a society that is working on a cure for cancer... any kind of cancer... please try and remember the torture that these people have to go through because of a horrible disease.

I just want to let the Dawgs here know that I am a proud bone marrow doner. I bought someone 5 more years of life, and I am still in the registry. I would donate again if I was determined to be a match. I just wanted to put a positive spin on this thread.

My dad got ate up by cancer in 1989 that was in the pancreas and liver areas. It reduced him to a basically a skeleton before he died. One could hardly recognize him.
What is the process of being a bone morrow doner? I have given blood over the years. Time to do more.

As a Hospice nurse I deal with cancer on a daily basis. It does suck and unfortunatly it afflicts a large percentage of us. Be it directly through diagnosis or those we love. I don't know anyone that hasn't had the Big CA touch them in some way.

Looking back on my post I didn't mean for it to come off as negative... guess I was in a bad mood after work (it's been a long week)... we do see some amazing stories of cancer survivors in kids... a lot of these kids are my heros... from the ones that are never suppose to walk and do... to the ones who beat back cancer again and again... to the ones who face death with a smile on their face and contentment in their hearts. Kids are amazing people.

Go to marrow.org for details on how to register.
Bone marrow donation is rather simple. You either get an epidural or anethesia, they put you on your belly, ram a large needle into your pelvis, and suck out the marrow. It's easiest to extract from the pelvis. When you wake up, you feel like you've been beaten about the waist and butt, but it's a small price to pay.
To be able to donate, you have to be as close a genetic match as possible to the recipient. Bone marrow donation is usually kept within families. Bone marrow donation is usually for cancers such as leukemia and other blood born diseases.

It's something you face everyday and kudos to you for what you do. I was reading it and my daughter is acting like a goof rolling around on the ground in the blanket and I had the thought "What if?" I seriously almost started choking up right there

My girlfriend's mom is a breast cancer survivor so I can somewhat relate.
It truly is a horrible disease and my sincerest well wishes go out to those battling it and those who know someone dealing with it.

Here's info on this special event that is being held @ Jacobs field: CLEVELAND EVENT: http://www.lightthenight.org/site/c.itJZJ7MOIwE/b.837883/k.8FB4/Cleveland_Walk.htm (you'll see a pic of the Lee family there) I am doing this walk with my significant other who lost her father to Leukemia in 1995. If you would like to offer a donation (no matter the size) send me a PM and I can direct you to the website. It's quick and easy to donate. So far, at least 2 members of DT have donated and I appreciate that. I'm glad to see a few around here care about these important causes.

Friend of mine – not a 'close, close friend' but a guy I liked - died from liver cancer late last month. He lost I'd guess about 150 pounds in a matter of months. I agree that cancer sucks.

This has to be an incredibly tough job...
one of my long time patients died a couple months ago from lymphoma... another therapist and I would go up after work a couple times just to hang out with her and watch movies/play board games... she never wanted us to leave. I remember in her last few days we knew it was coming (you can always tell by a look in their eyes) and she just never wanted to go to sleep...
I can't imagine being a hospice nurse... has to be one emotional job

I could never do what you do. If I knew they were going to die there would be no way I could be strong like I know I would have to be for them. I would break down and cry. Shoot, I feel like crying now,,I have to stay out of this thread

we did... before we went in and after we left... we only made jokes and tried to laugh as much as possible while up there... a few drinks always helped before visiting her but we break down a lot... but never in front of the kids...

All the same jay, I couldn't do what you do, either. It takes a special kind of person to be good at that job.

I would never not be able to in front of the kids. Looking into their eyes knowing they are going to die. Knowing they have only been on this earth a short time and most of that time they had to deal with pain and suffering. I would want God to take me instead of them right then and there. If I ever have to be put in that situation I don't think any alcohol could help me deal with that.

Thanks Jay for reminding all of us that Cancer does indeed suck.
I lost my maternal grandfather when I was 4 years old to Lung Cancer.
I lost my maternal grandmother when I was 22 to Brain Cancer.
I lost my mother when I was 28 to a second bout with cancer, she was months short of being cancer free(breast cancer) 7 years and developed terminal Lung Cancer.
I lost my father in 2003 to pancreatic cancer.
In 2005 I lost both my fraternal Auntie and my maternal cousin to cancer. (Auntie had lung cancer and only one lung due to one lung dying from an infection years earlier and my Cousing to liver Cancer)
My cousin that was more like a sister to my dad passed away from Leukemia in 1997.
Can I say that I hate Cancer, hell yes I can but for all those that I have lost to cancer I have been touched by a small little angel that survived cancer and has been an inspiration to me over the years because she dealt with it so very well.
For every loss there is a success story....but remember, it can hit anyone any age any time. Always take the time to tell the people that mean the most to you that you love them.

I couldn't have said it better Jay. I wish we did more, but April and I chose to do as much as we could with the Leukemia Society walk next Fri. We are trying to raise money for the event, so if anyone is interested in donating to the Leukemia and Lymphoma society and help a fellow dawgtalker in the process, send me a PM.

Hats off to you Jay. Cancer has touched us all ,some more than others, and I think most of us would like to do more but speaking just for myself I'll admit to being a coward when dealing with someone who is dying and kids....forget about it. It always violates my sense of fairness when something like cancer happens to kids. My daughter has a blood disorder that is way too close to cancer and being in the pediatric cancer ward at Rainbows was an experience that still moves me and I like to think of myself as a pretty hard nosed kind of guy. The nurses and doctors who work there every day are...man, I can't find the words. Again I'd like to tell you I admire you and people like you for having the balls to jump in there and give to people knowing the end result.

Between the two of us I bet we could put a dozen or more family members in the cancer claimed catergory. Mother, Granfather, Grandmother, Grandmother Fraternal, 2 Uncles , not even going to count cousins ....barring a car crash or jealous husband it's a good bet that cancer will try and get me too.

I know Ire, I have probably forgotten some of the folks that passed from cancer in my family (no disrespect intended) and I thank my lucky stars that I was an adopted child and won't fall into the "family" disease. (not trying to sound harsh about it but am glad that my biological family isn't cancer riddled like my adopted family was/is....dang, forgot my Maternal Auntie is a cancer survivor.)

My friend, who also occasionally posts here (Primedawg) was just diagnosed with thyroid cancer. He'll be getting his thyroid removed next week at the hospital I work at. So everyone keep him in your thoughts and prayers as well.

When I stand before you, you are looking at one of the lucky ones..
7 years ago, I had kidney cancer.. we found it in time and it was contained within the kidney. So for me, once they removed the kidney, I was fine.. No Chemo, Radition or any other treatment,,
I was lucky,, very lucky!
My prayers go out to all that suffer from Cancer and to those that have family suffering from Cancer.. I got lucky, but many of them won't..
It's a scarry thing! VERY!

nice thread Jay.... we had a little experience of our own recently which has deeply affected me. My son needed an emergency apendectomy and spent several days in Children's Hospital here in Columbus. Everything from newborn's to teenagers were all around us, many of them gravely ill. The courage and family strength I witnessed left a lasting impression on me, not to mention the scores of volunteers doing what they could to make people's days' a little brighter. Nothing like a trip to the hospital to make you appreciate your health.
On a lighter note, while there we were asked to be photographed and put in tomorrow's Dispatch in a special section on the upcoming name change of Children's Hospital. If you see it, we are the people messing with the computer.

There was an incredibly wonderful article in the Akron Beacon today about a Doctor(oncology) at City Hospital that goes the extra mile with her patients. She gave one woman a wonderful surprise this week because she found out that the cancer patient had gotten remarried on Sept 14th and had to go in the next week for a tests on her bone marrow because she had an extremely elevated white blood count. I almost started crying when I read it because the Doctor didn't have to do the special things she did but did it because she CARES about each and every one of her patients that have been victimized by cancer. Very heart warming.
