Jay, you do a job so many can't even think about doing. I've had a very emotional past 10 days. Last Friday evening the lady who sits beside me at work found out her 3 year old niece has an inoperable malignant tumor on her brainstem. She starts treatment this Monday. It's so unfair because she is the light of her family's life. She is the only child/grandchild in this family. Then Saturday I went with a friend to a fund raiser for an old co-worker of hers that has stage 4 brain cancer. That was a little more heartwarming because we were able to give back. This event not only reached it's goal, but surpassed it by almost 1/2 the amout again. The goal was $10K and when they had everything counted, they had reached $15,400! I know in the grand sceme of things, that isn't going to be much, but at least I know I helped this family in some small way. Then Wednesday was one of my best friends "wellness day" as she calls it. I called it her 4th birthday. She has been cancer free for 4 years now! I made a huge deal about it, went out and bought her a card and some toys that a 4 year old would play with. (a slinky, coloring book and crayons, bubbles and a care bear) I think the most touching thing I saw all week was when she asked me if I would be offended if she gave the coloring book and crayons to the 3 yr old's aunt. Of course I said to do it! All 3 of us cried as she handed them over and said she hopes that some of her miracle rubbed off on those crayons and that this baby will have a miracle of her own. So there's my Cancer Sucks story for the week.

Jay, keep doing what you do because it sounds like not only do these kids touch you, but you touch them in a huge way and help make the "suck" days suck a little less for them.

To add a positive note:

My wife this summer completed the Cleveland 1/2 Marathon running as a survivor for Team in Training (Leukemia & Lymphoma society.) Between her and a co-worker (who ran in her honor) they raised over $4000.

My wife had Hodgkin's about 7 years ago now. After the first treatment failed she ended up going through a full bone marrow transplant. She's now been free and clear for the past 6 years.

I was almost a bone marrow donor a few years ago. I'm also on the registry from when I signed up about 12 years ago when I was in college. They contacted me about 3 years ago after somehow tracking me down through my mother-in-law. I went through all the preliminary tests but it turned out someone else was a slightly closer match than I was and they were able to donate. It probably didn't help that I almost passed out when they took the blood samples lol. I donate blood as often as I can but I'm a huge baby around needles. I always get questioning looks when I tell them I'm here to donate blood but keep an eye on me cause I'm probably going to pass out.
