Mitchell Schwart's ironman streak ends

Posted by Darin Gantt on November 10, 2019, 6:35 PM EST

For all the interest paid to their quarterback, the Chiefs had to deal with an injury Sunday that snapped a monumental run of good fortune and toughness.

Right tackle Mitchell Schwartz left the game in the second quarter to get a knee injury checked out, which snapped a streak of 7,894 consecutive snaps. Per Adam Teicher of ESPN.com, that was the longest such streak among active players in the league.

“It was weird,” Schwartz said. “I’ve never done that before. I knew something didn’t feel right, [but] nothing broken or anything like that.”

It was the first time in his seven-plus years he’s missed any time, including a meaningless 2017 regular season finale when other starters were rested.

He returned in the third quarter and played the entire second half, starting another streak.

Tough player ... hopefully he gets healthy

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

It would be nice to have him and JT on the corners. Oh well we have Robinson and Hubbard.

Should have kept him instead of yanking the offer. Crap move by the FO.

He deserved better...I was happy for him

Good players shouldn't play all their careers in crap teams.

We were not good enough by them, so it was a sensible move, IMHO.

This was the move that stoked my fire against that front office. Schwartz was a good RT who was only going to get better..and that front office let him go.

Look at us now, still trying to fill the void left by that personnel move...

I agree. I was more upset with the Schwartz situation than the Mack one ... RT has been an issue for us and we finally had one.

Mack wanted to be highest paid center in the nfl and imo, it would have taken such an offer to keep him in Cleveland.

I think Mack wanted out..wanted to move to a team that had the potential to win it all.

Agreed. I had little issue with him leaving TBH. I felt like our FO dropped the ball with Schwartz tho

Agreed. Although Schwartz's team tried to jerk around the FO, in the end, they should have gone back to the negotiating table rather than walking away from it altogether.

We had no shot at Mack. None.

But this is what happens when you continually switch FO every other January. The new FO has very little time to restart negotiations and relationships with two months to go before a FA period begins. The real blame, IMO, on both of those contracts goes to Farmer (Schwartz) and Banner (Mack) because those type of extensions should have been handed out one year before their FA rather than heading into a new year and those players getting talked into their ear about how much money they could make on the open market.

Instead of Banner extending Mack while he was here, Farmer was forced to make a decision between tagging Mack or TJ Ward. We could have had both. Instead we get some wild ass contract with an opt out for Mack after two years and Whitner (who as a disaster) instead of Ward.

Instead of Farmer extending Schwartz, we have a new FO heading into the FA with four to five starters from the prior season at the end of their rookie contract heading to the open market in less than two months. What a cluster.

Still, Schwartz should have been the priority from Sashi and Co. and they should get blame and it was a mistake but lack of obvious moves from prior FOs have hauted player retention that should have remained long-term.

Edit: Although it was hilarious seeing people bash Schwartz on how bad he was up until his final year and then complain that we didn't re-sign him.

Yeah, even Joe Thomas basically said Mack was gone regardless. I don’t blame him (and he did play in a Super Bowl)

Especially after telling us we’d be looking for and wanted good, young talent ... then one of your first moves is to jerk him around and slam the door in his face and not re-negotiate with him ....

That FO was in way over there heads on many fronts ...

He was also bad play calling down the stretch away from being a SB champ ...

I dont blame Sashi for him ... i gave him credit for actually getting Mack to come back and listen after he’d decided on Atlanta ... to bad we didn’t do the same for Mitch ...

Weren't there a lot of complaints about Schwartz' play on these forums when he was here?

Relatively speaking ya .... compared to the game day forum it was child’s play ... *L* ...

I was told by one of them to go root for the bills cause in the 2nd quarter when we were winning i wouldn’t agree that Freddie should be fired ... *L* ...

When he started,he wasn't that good to be honest, but then he improved his game.

Not many were here criticizing him after, actually I don't remember anyone.

in all fairness, Garrett is terrible against the run. He is amazing at getting pressure.

His skills at pressure more than makeup for what he lacks against the run

He did sign as a FA.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Every time I think of how we let him go, I also think of him holding Von Miller to doing jack squat when we hosted Denver and came close to beating them.

They did for a while We offered a 5 year contract for 7 million per year (Which is more than he sign with the Chiefs for) But when he wanted to shop around and try to get 8 to 10 million per year the Browns moved on and pulled the offer off the table. STUPID move on our part.

I opposed him using us as a bargaining chip and negotiating in the media. Every player is a mercenary and he left better than he got credit for. Have we replaced Mack with Tretter's new contract? We certainly have not replaced Thomas.

I stopped caring a while back. Step up or step off.

I’m not sure if he was the GM then or not, but you could be right
