Pit, now Buttigieg is getting the Bernie treatment. He can't win black voters... Dems eating their own.

To defeat Trump, Dems rethink the Obama coalition formula

Just put all their damn pictures on a big wheel and spin it! Doesn't really matter who at this point, we just need to come together on the left and kick Trump's ass in 2020.

There are a few of these "don't stand a chance of being the nominee" candidates that are really ticking me off with their attacks. Yes, Kamala, I'm looking at you.

Bloomberg is in! It's all the talking heads are talking about this morning. He's not a horrible candidate but the push for him from cable news signals the center corporatists are desperate to stop Warren and Bernie. smfh

how are Dems eating their own?

If you aren't the favorite of black voters you can't win... That's so much BS. I don't see black dems voting for Trump no matter who is on the ticket. Read the article.

It's one thing to talk about this kind of thing in a strategic sense, but to use it as an attack is different. How does Pete get past that attack? Even if his popularity rises among black voters, will it be enough? Just like Bernie is to far left, he's a socialist, people aren't ready for a revolution, etc. In 2016 this black and rural voters would not vote for him was used. He spent two years engaging with those voters to become the most popular politician in America... Now the dems attack him for being too far left and a socialist like the GOPers did in 2016.

That's eating your own. Harris and Booker are all but done and Pete is on the rise so now they smear him on this. smh

the dems need the minority vote to win.

a slight majority of white voters will go republican. which means the dems have a minority amount of white vote, and the majority of minority votes.

so yea, the dems trying to get the minority support absolutely matters. especially since - and i dunno how many times i have to say it - black and latino's would be voting republican if it wasnt for the racist element that the gop clearly caters to.

and while i like and would support mayor pete, lets be clear: his record on law enforcement isnt good. there's a reason one of the black leaders in pete's OWN city just endorsed Biden instead of him.

bernie is far too left. again, you clearly dont understand values in the minority communities, because minority communities are moderate, and in some cases conservative leaning.

ya know, like the vast majority of the country. thats not "Eating your own". thats selecting the best candidate that will work toward issues they felel is important.

you far left guys are free to form your own party.

there's a reason why Warren is growing support amongst minorities, despite being considered a further left candidate (not as far as bernie).

warren vs pete, black americans will choose warren.

I get what you are saying, I just don't think it's as much fact based as it is 'feeling' based. Bernie is super popular. So him getting minority votes is not the issue, the issue is the right beats the left up with "socialism = bad", so they freak out and start echoing instead of giving people the opportunity to vote for what they want.

People want health care they can afford, period. They want jobs that allow them to live and get ahead. They want safe communities. They want better lives for their kids. They want a fair economy.

The only reason they hesitate with progressive candidates is fear mongering, not because they are moderate or conservative, they still want the same things but the whispers of "socialism = bad" from OTHER dems keeps them from voting for a candidate they like and an agenda that represents what they truly want. Dems eating their own.

BTW - I'm still voting blue no matter who. Can you, Pit, or the other moderate centrist say the same?

How many more times does someone have to say it before it sinks in? I undertstand how some on the other side never grasp something when it's repeated over and over again. Looks like that must be contagious.

You are 100% correct. Both Bill Clinton and Obama wrote the blueprint on how to win the presidency. Now? The democratic voters seem blind to it.

Oh dear Lord. Even you know better than that. Hillary had a target on her back for years before she ran. She was the most unpopular candidate the Dems could have ran. Quit acting like you don't know that.

I read that they (dems) are trying to rebuild the Obama coalition today. Hard to rebuild 'First Black President' and they damn sure have nobody as charismatic. Bill Clinton won on charisma too first time around.

Out of this field, who is the most popular? Who has changed the conversation about what dems stand for? Is that person going to be able to execute that playbook?

I'll have no problem with it whatsoever, and here's why:

1. Any candidate would be preferable to the dumpster fire that presently resides at 1600.
2. New POTUS's have only so much political capital to spend. The system is set up with built-in guardrails and resistances that prevent the country from veering too far too fast. That means centrist or prog is less important than the #1 objective.

So for me the choice is simple: clear the current infestation, call in the Orkin man, them get busy fixing 4 years of Putin's damage.

That's the problem. Trying to claim that a far left agenda is "what the Democrats stand for" isn't being truthful.

The RNC needs to find a candidate to run for Katie Hill's vacant congressional seat and deny pig Cenk Uygur the opportunity.

BREITBART

Young Turks Founder Running for Katie Hill’s Seat Posted Crude, Sexual ‘Rules’ for Women

Hannah Bleau

16 Nov 2019

The Young Turks founder Cenk Uygur, who is running for former Rep. Katie Hill’s (D-CA) vacant seat in California’s 25th Congressional District, posted crude and sexual “rules for women” online, which resurfaced on Friday.

Hill resigned this month after facing an ethics probe over allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a member of her congressional staff. One of the allegations, which involved a “throuple” relationship with a young female staffer, Hill admitted to. California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the district’s special election date, which is set for March 3, 2020.

Uygur, who also co-founded Justice Democrats, announced his bid to replace Hill on Thursday:

However, Uygur’s past adds to the CA 25’s existing woes, as Hill left the seat riddled with sexual controversies.

Uygur has a controversial past, particularly in regard to women. He was forced out of his own Justice Democrats in 2017 after problematic sexist blog posts from the early 2000s surfaced.

In one post, the Democrat laid out his “hard and fast rules of dating.”

“Women, ignore these at your peril,” Uygur wrote.

Perhaps a nice clean Republican is the solution...

Former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos, who has famously alleged he was targeted in the FBI’s Russia probe as part of a scheme to take down his boss, announced Monday morning on "Fox & Friends" that he is running for the California congressional seat vacated by Democrat Katie Hill.

“This is a state with tremendous potential. Unfortunately, the governing apparatus and the party in this state has driven it right into the ground,” Papadopoulos said.

Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and cooperated in Mueller’s investigation. He was sentenced in fall 2018 to 14 days in prison.

I'm surprised he's willing to show his face in public. Never know when one of Boss45's goons will try to 'disappear' his butt. Mobsters don't like opera stars who sing to the Feds like it's their Met debut.

He might not be long for this world if he stays in the lights.

Interesting.

It seems to me by looking at this that the "likely voters" prefer a more moderate Democratic candidate. This is probably why the Republicans are already beggining to attack Joe Biden as the most likely Democratic candidate that offers the biggest challenge at the polls.

The Democratic electorate is older, more moderate and less educated than you think

CNN)Listening to Joe Biden, you might come away with the sense that he is out of touch with the Democratic Party's electorate, which many believe is younger, further left and better educated than it used to be. Indeed, the party's voters may be all of these things.
But, as HuffPost's Kevin Robillard wrote, the former vice president seems to be making a bet that there are still plenty of older, more moderate and less educated Democrats who can help him win the nomination.
That might not be a bad bet.

Democratic Party voters are older than younger

There's a case to be made that Democrats are younger than they were at the beginning of the decade. Those younger than the age of 40, for example, made up 6 more points of the Democratic vote in the 2018 midterm than they did in the 2010 midterm, according to a Catalist (a Democratic firm) estimate of the national voter file. The exit polls illustrate a similar trend.

But even if Democrats are younger than they once were, Millennials and Generation Z voters (roughly those younger than 40) are still very much the minority of Democrats. They made up just about 29% of all Democratic voters in the 2018 midterm, per Catalist. In fact even when you add in those 40 to 49 years old, you still only account for about 44% of Democratic voters in 2018. In other words, the AARP demographic (age 50 and older) were the majority (56%) of 2018 Democratic voters, per Catalist. And in case you were wondering, those ages 65 and older (27%) made up about double the percentage of Democrats who were younger than 30 (14%).

The exit polls can differ slightly on the exact level each age group makes up of the electorate, though all sources agree that a majority of Democratic voters are age 45 and older.

That's a big deal when age was the No. 1 predictor of vote choice in the 2016 primary and continues to be a primary driver of vote choice in early 2020 polling.

A candidate who is receiving the bulk of their support from older voters -- like, for example, a Biden -- is in a considerably better position than a candidate who does best with younger voters. It's how Hillary Clinton won last time, despite Bernie Sanders swamping her among younger voters.
Democratic Party voters are more moderate than very liberal.

Whether it be the exit polls, Gallup or the Pew Research Center, there's no doubt Democrats are more liberal than they once were. In the exit polls, for example, the percentage of Democratic voters who identify as liberal rose by double-digits between the Democratic midterm blowouts of 2006 and 2018.

Still, moderates and conservatives make up about 50% of all Democrats. In the 2018 midterms, the exit polls found that moderates and conservatives made up 54% of those who voted Democratic. Pew similarly put moderate and conservative Democrats as 54% of all self-identified Democrats and independents who lean Democratic voters in 2018. Gallup's 2018 figures had moderates as 47% of all adults who self-identified as Democrats.

And while liberals make up about 50% of Democrats, many of them are only "somewhat liberal." In a Quinnipiac University poll taken last month, people who identified as "very liberal" were only 19% of all Democrats and independents who leaned Democratic. Very liberals made up the same 19% of those who said they were voting Democratic in Suffolk University's final 2018 pre-election poll. The 2016 primary exit polls discovered that about 25% of Democratic primary voters called themselves very liberal.

Put another way: the moderate/conservative wing of the Democratic Party likely still makes up at least 2 times as much of the party's voters than the very liberal flank.

Again, this is probably good news for Biden, given that his support in the last Quinnipiac University poll among moderate and conservative Democrats (37%) was more than double his support from very liberal Democrats (14%).
It further suggests that Democrats who run far to the left may be misreading where the electorate is.

Democratic Party voters are more likely to be working class

Democratic voters are more likely to have a college education than they used to. Catalist, Pew and Gallup all show a trend toward Democrats being more educated than they used to be.

Despite this growing education, however, Democratic voters are still more likely to lack a college degree. According to Catalist, about 59% of voters who cast a ballot for the Democrats in 2018 didn't have a college degree. Gallup and Pew have the percentage of self-identified without a college degree well into the 60s. The exit polls, which historically have painted a better educated electorate than other sources, found about 55% of 2018 Democratic voters lacking a college degree.

Even among white Democrats, there are still many voters who have no college degree. Among whites, Catalist calculates the percentage of 2018 Democratic voters without a college degree at about 54%, compared to 46% who had a college degree. Gallup and Pew have the percentage of self-identified Democrats without a college degree in the high 50s among whites. The exit poll had them as a slight minority at 48% of voters who went for the Democrats in 2018.

As the Washington Post's David Byler put it, "Democrats should stop chasing Trump's base. They have their own white working-class voters."

When you broaden it out to look at all Democratic voters, all the sources I could find have whites with a college degree as less than a third of all Democrats. Most have them at less than 30%.

Currently, there doesn't seem to be a large education divide in Democratic primary polling. A candidate who is able to tap into the large working class vote within the party, however, will have a big time advantage.
All together, a Democratic candidate of the old, moderate and working class stands a better shot of winning the primary than one of the young, left and college educated.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/09/politics/democratic-party-voters-analysis/index.html

When you point out the facts to them, they call you a boomer. Then they endorse candidates in their 70's.

Oh the irony.

This election Trump is offering the gift of the White house. Yet I still feel the Dems will find a way to screw it up.

And there is nothing misogynist or wrong with a woman being dominant in bed.
Also, I was berating Tiger Woods in that thread.

Sanders, Buttigieg surge in New Hampshire as Biden, Warren slip: poll

White House hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) surged to the lead in New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary, followed by South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg in second place, according to a new Emerson College poll released Tuesday.

Sanders led the Democratic primary field with 26 percent support among primary voters, trailed by Buttigieg at 22 percent. Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) each had 14 percent, while no other candidate broke double digits.

The poll suggests a significant shuffling of the primary field in the Granite State, with Sanders and Buttigieg both doubling their support compared to the same poll in September. That survey had Sanders at 13 percent and Buttigieg at 11 percent.

Meanwhile, Biden, who led in the September poll, fell 10 points, while Warren dropped 7 points. And in a sign the field could rejigger further, 55 percent of Democratic primary voters said there’s a chance they could change their minds ahead of the Feb. 11 primary.

“The Democratic voters have taken a look at Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren and they appear unsatisfied at this time which brought some voters back to Bernie Sanders while others are now moving to a fresh face in Pete Buttigieg, this demonstrates the fluidity of the race,” said Spencer Kimball, director of Emerson Polling.

Sanders’s surge has been buoyed by support from voters under the age of 50, with 38 percent of such voters saying they back the Vermont Independent, compared with 16 percent for Warren, 12 percent for Buttigieg and 8 percent for Biden.

Buttigieg’s rise was aided in part by voters over the age of 50, as 32 percent of such voters said they would back him, compared to 19 percent for Biden, 15 percent for Sanders and 11 percent for Warren.

Sanders, a staunch progressive, also has a lead among voters who identify as very liberal, while Buttigieg leads with primary voters who identify as somewhat liberal or moderate/conservative.

Sanders, who hails from neighboring Vermont, has banked on a strong showing in New Hampshire to propel his campaign well beyond the February primary.

The poll also comes as Buttigieg enjoys a surge in early state polls and on the heels of three consecutive Iowa surveys showing the Indiana Democrat leading in the Hawkeye State’s caucus, while another New Hampshire poll shows him edging out the competition in that state’s primary.

The Emerson College poll surveyed 549 New Hampshire Democratic primary voters from Nov. 22 to Nov. 26 and has a margin of error of 4.1 percent.

There is more support for Sanders from voters under 50 than ALL the other top three combined. Hear that Pit? Those are the winds of change blowing.

Obama privately said he would speak up to stop Sanders: report

President Obama privately said he would speak up to stop Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) from becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, Politico reported Tuesday.

The former president reportedly said if Sanders held a strong lead in the Democratic primary, he would speak out to prevent him from becoming the nominee.

A close adviser to Obama told Politico he could not confirm whether Obama would stand up against Sanders.

“He hasn’t said that directly to me,” the adviser said. “The only reason I'm hesitating at all is because, yeah, if Bernie were running away with it, I think maybe we would all have to say something. But I don't think that's likely. It's not happening.”

An Obama spokesperson, when asked about his previous comments on Sanders, referred to the president’s past comments that he would back whomever became the Democratic nominee.

“Look, we have a field of very accomplished, very serious and passionate and smart people who have a history of public service, and whoever emerges from the primary process I will work my tail off to make sure that they are the next president,” Obama said earlier this month, according to his spokesperson.

Obama has stayed quiet throughout the campaign about which candidate he would support, but has offered to meet with any candidate in the primary and has given advice to those who meet with him, according to the news outlet.

A close adviser told Politico that “I can’t even imagine with this field how bad it would have to be for him to say something,” referring to Obama speaking out against a candidate.

But earlier this month, the former president warned the 2020 candidates of leaning too far left at a speaking engagement, saying “the average American doesn’t think we have to completely tear down the system and remake it.”

Politico also described the relationship between Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Obama as “famously complicated.” The former president reportedly said in a private conversation that if Democrats supported her when she was considering a 2016 run, it would serve as a rejection of his economic policies.

The Hill reached out to the Sanders and Warren campaigns for comment.

Dems Fear ‘Carpetbagger’ Cenk Uygur Will Lose Them California Seat
‘MISOGYNY AND SEXISM IS NOT OK’

The firebrand Young Turks co-founder is running for former Rep. Katie Hill’s seat—and his controversial reputation is sending shivers through Democrats.

Progressive internet personality Cenk Uygur wants to take his trash-talking attitude to the halls of Congress, launching a bid for the California seat recently vacated by former Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA).

But activists in the district say Uygur will be dogged by the many inflammatory remarks he’s made in the past about women and minority groups—and they fear his controversial reputation could squander Democrats’ chances to retain a hotly contested district.

Uygur has become a hero for some progressive Democrats as a co-founder of The Young Turks, a left-wing video site. But voters in California’s 25th District may be less thrilled when they learn about many of Uygur’s past remarks, which include calling women genetically “flawed” because not enough women wanted to sleep with him.

“You should know that misogyny and sexism is not OK, especially if he was a grown adult when he said these things,” said John Casselberry Jr., a Democratic activist and planning commissioner in the district.

At least seven local or state Democratic groups, including the California National Organization for Women and the LGBT-focused Stonewall Democratic Club, have denounced Uygur’s past remarks, with some calling for him to drop out of the race.

“We unequivocally condemn Uygur, and believe he has demonstrated that he is unfit for public office,” California Women’s List, a PAC, said in a statement.

Uygur’s campaign initially didn’t respond to requests for comment. After The Daily Beast first ran this story, though, Uygur released a statement through his campaign saying his old remarks “do not reflect who I am today.”

“The announcement of my candidacy has again brought up remarks I made over the years that do not reflect who I am today or what I believe,” Uygur said in a statement. “Those comments were and are offensive and ignorant. I deeply regret making them and I apologize for the pain they have caused.”

In his statement, Uygur complained that the Democratic groups that criticized him “never reach out to me.”

“At the same time, none of the Democratic groups condemning me have ever reached out to me to see if I might be a different person now,” Uygur said. “They never gave me a chance. Curiously, these same Democratic operatives also blame me for critiquing President Obama from the left. So, I wonder if their concern is that I used to be conservative or if their real concern is that I am too progressive.”

Hill resigned in October, after the conservative blog RedState published nude photos of her and revelations about her relationships with staffers. Her resignation set up a scramble ahead of a March 3 special election for the seat, which Cook Political Report rates as “Lean Democratic.” Former Rep. Steve Knight (R-CA), whom Hill defeated for the seat in 2018, and California Assemblywoman Christy Smith (D), who has Hill’s endorsement, appear to be the leading candidates on either side.

Zakia Kator, a progressive activist and Afghan refugee who lives in the district, said Uygur and his Young Turks video network helped inspire her to get involved in politics and work to elect Hill and other Democrats in the purple district.

Buttigieg calls The Root writer whose column on his past comments on minorities and education went viral

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) called The Root writer Michael Harriot this week after an op-ed Harriot wrote about the presidential candidate’s past comments on minorities and education went viral online.

In the viral opinion piece, which is titled “Pete Buttigieg Is a Lying MF,” Harriot took aim at comments Buttigieg made in 2011 that recently resurfaced.

The remarks came during a televised discussion Buttigieg participated in during his campaign for local office at the time, according to CNN. In one clip of his comments that has been making the rounds online, Buttigieg says that children "need to see evidence that education is going to work for them."

"You’re motivated because you believe that at the end of your educational process, there's a reward, there’s a stable life, there’s a job, and there are a lot of kids, especially the lower-income, minority neighborhoods, who literally just haven't seen it work. There isn't somebody they know personally who testifies to the value of education," Buttigieg, a leading 2020 Democratic candidate, continued in the clip.

Harriot wrote that the mayor’s comments prove "men like him are more willing to perpetuate the fantastic narrative of negro neighborhoods needing more role models and briefcase-carriers than make the people in power stare into the sun and see the blinding light of racism."

"This is why institutional inequality persists," he wrote. "Not because of white hoods and racial slurs. It is because this insidious double-talk erases the problem by camouflaging it. Because it is painted as a problem of black lethargy and not white apathy."

The op-ed sparked viral reactions from many social media users and prompted the phrase "Pete Buttigieg Is a Lying MF" to trend on Twitter.

In response to some of the backlash generated from his past comments, Buttigieg told CNN later on Tuesday, “What I said in that comment before I became mayor does not reflect the totality of my understanding then, and certainly now, about the obstacles that students of color face in our system today.”

He also said he reached out to Harriot afterward, telling the network that while he thinks that "some of the characterization of me personally is unfair," he understands "the concern."

In his conversation with Harriot, Buttigieg said the author "went into a lot more depth about, I think, the concern of this perspective that makes it sound like, you know, it's all the fault of students of color or somehow, their families ... when the reality is there are so many barriers that our systems put up."

Harriot also wrote about the call in a piece published later on Tuesday. In the roughly 18-minute call, he and Buttigieg discussed educational inequality in the country, among other issues, he said.

“We have to disabuse ourselves from the notion that the problem with educational inequality is because of an esoteric lack of support,” Harriot said he explained to Buttigieg in the call. “That’s a lie. And a man as educated as yourself knows it’s a lie. And to regurgitate that narrative publicly is not just dangerous, it is malpractice.”

Buttigieg reportedly said in the call that he thinks “there are some ways to attack these issues with policies that might solve these issues, but would certainly help.”

“But do you disagree with the point I was making?” he also reportedly asked Harriot in the call. “Sometimes children don’t get to see the possibilities. Do you think the lack of positive examples of educational success can lead to mistrust and a lack of confidence in the system?”

“No...well, yes,” Harriot said he responded. “But the lack of confidence doesn’t have anything to do with role models or support from parents, it’s because the [censored] is true!”

“Every study and data point shows that racism is baked into the education system,” he also recalled telling Buttigieg in the call. “If your goal was to fix the problems in America’s schools, why would you even mention ‘confidence?’ A president can’t fix confidence. And you can’t say: ‘Black kids don’t have confidence in the system’ without pointing out all of the reasons they shouldn’t have confidence in the system.”

Later in his piece, Harriot said that he told the mayor that his initial “article wasn’t meant to inspire outrage.”

“Its purpose was to make a necessary point about black voters and real issues. There is no way that I can know if he is genuinely interested in engaging black voters, attacking discrimination or crossing the racial divide,” he wrote. “There are an infinite number of candidates who have waded into black barbershops or sashayed into black pulpits to assure us that they were on our side when they were only interested in our vote.”

“The only thing I actually know about Pete Buttigieg is that he is a white man. But Pete Buttigieg listened, which is all you can ask a white man to do,” he added.

The backlash over Buttigieg’s comments comes as a number of polls have consistently shown the mayor struggling to gain support among black voters, with some polls placing his support from the voting bloc at zero percent.

Who knows. He can certainly win the democratic primaries without the black vote.

In the general? Well, Hillary ended up not having much turnout for the black vote during the general election.

And it appears the majority like Pete even less. I don’t like it when people don’t show up to vote. Hell he has more questions than Biden does, who black people will absolutely turn out to vote for.

Again, I need people to show out and vote, but not vote just because of teams. Black Americans aren’t supporting Harris and booker either, and they’re black. And the DNC better stop acting like we OWE them our vote.

Other than Biden, black Americans seem to be more for warren and sanders. I think they can warm up to pete during the general campaign, but he has a crap ton of questions, and not giving a whole lot of answers.

And major Pete is doing a horrible job reaching out. I could easily see a scenario where there’s such little turnout in the general election that trump ends up with a slight majority of the black vote over Pete.

Me personally, I’m staying patient and just paying attention to what is being said by the candidates, even though I want warren to win he nomination.

Right now, all these primaries are geared toward white people, and that’s the truth. Iowa is white, New Hampshire is white white. And let’s face it, they’re people most likely to vote, right?

Not a big deal, I get it. But Pete better come up with a strategy to get minorities to believe in him, because his actual record and comments prior to running leaves a lot to be desired.
