I wonder if anyone has been watching the Ken Burns Special on PBS about WWII...This is a very compelling show and it makes me want to personally THANK ALL Vets of that war while they are still with us..If it wasn't for these HEROES of the US and our Allies, we could NOT enjoy what we have now.....

They had an article on this in the paper last week. I hope to catch it in reruns or on DVD. They ran an unedited version last night and I wasn't able to watch it.

More than 16 million Americans served in the armed forces during the war. Fewer than a million ever saw serious combat. The infantry represented just 14 percent of the troops overseas. But wherever they fought – in North Africa or the South Pacific or Western Europe — the infantry bore the brunt of the fighting on the ground — and seven out of ten suffered casualties.

Those in the infantry — in the Army and Marines — endured hardships and horrors for which no training could ever have prepared them. The infantry was the workhorse of the military, not only faced with battling the enemy but also often asked to do physical labor at the front lines transporting the food, clothing, weapons and medicine needed to win the war. They experienced the war as no one else did.

This has been on PBS since Sunday chronicling WWII from the American perspective from Pearl Harbor to VJ Day. I am a huge History buff and especially World War II. I try to read and watch anything I can about the war and this film that has been on has been terrific. My grandpa fought in the jungles of the Philippines and when I was young I could never try to wake him up b/c he knocked me across the room thinking I was a Jap Soldier. I used to ask him all the time about the war and he loved to tell me sories. I could listen to him for hours. But he didn't tell me everything. When I got older he started to tell me some of the bad things he saw. Like civilians hanging from trees. His friend stepping on a mine and blowing his bottom half off. How he used a flamethrower in a cave and watched the Japanese running out with their skin melting off. He passed away in 1998 and like a lot of WWII vets they are dying at an alarming pace. Films like this are important for the new generations to never forget what that generation gave up for this country.

Anyone else check it out? What did you think of it? I have seen a lot of new materials and the narration and stories are really interesting. It goes in depth unlike any other film about the war I have seen. If you haven't and are interested in history check it out. I am going to pick up the book too. Here is a link to check out:

I haven't seen it, and didn't know about it until this morning when I went to the bank machine. I had to deal with Bank Of America interrupting my withdrawal to advertise it - don't get me wrong, I'm not picking on the movie or the Vets - I appreciate everything as much as or more than most - but just let me get my darn cash.

Do you know if they plan on repeating it? I'd love to see it, but the next chance I'll have to watch tv is probably this weekend...

I have been watching it and I think it is a great show. I sure hope, as said above, the younger people are watching this and respect what our fathers went through to be where we are today. Tonight's episode deals with the Invasion of France.

Once I sit down to watch it, I'm hooked.

Burns does a great job on everything he does. The Civil War doc was good also.

You know something,,I was watching the rerun last night about the fall of the Philippines and I really hope that one day someone makes a movie about the Bataan Death March. I couldn't believe some of the things that the survivors were saying. I mean it sounds like a Hollywood made up script but this actually happened. Thats a story about survival and brutality that can't be lost over time. Now with the advances in filming and graphics they could really drive home the point about what they went thru.

Yeah I saw the great raid, but what I mean is really going in depth about the march. Like the jap's driving trucks over the soldiers that fell, beheadings, no water or food, ect. I don't think the average American truly understands what those soldiers went thru for those 6 or so days

The History Channel for awhile was showing the Bataan survivor stories and it truly is a story of courage and survival.. ..I, to this day, still say that these soldiers of the WWII Era, are the greatest of heroes who have ever lived and deserve ALL recognition due to them until they all leave us (1500 daily are passing away)...This is a national travesty with regards to the treatment these HEROES have recieved and this Nation should be at their debt until the end..JMHO...
