Sides are being drawn up and the Commander of the Va. National Guard responded with a letter asking folks to be calm. Warned soldiers not to comment while in a uniformed position but can comment to legislators as private citizens.

I have talked to Democrats and Republicans around town and they agree on one thing, our governor is a dope.

Virginia's Ralph Northam announces temporary gun ban on Capitol grounds, state of emergency

Gov. Ralph Northam, D-Va., declared a state of emergency Wednesday and said he is temporarily banning individuals from carrying firearms and other weapons on Capitol grounds ahead of a scheduled gun rally for fear of a repeat of the violence law enforcement was ill-prepared to deal with at another rally in Charlottesville more than two years ago.
Northam said at a press conference Wednesday that the decision is based on "credible intelligence" from "mainstream channels, both offline and online, such as alternative dark web channels used by violent groups and white nationalists from outside Virginia," which law enforcement says have "malicious plans" that include storming the state Capitol building and stirring up violence at Monday's rally.

"This includes out of state militia groups and hate groups planning to travel from across the country to disrupt our democratic process with acts of violence," Northam said. "They're not coming to peacefully protest. They're coming to intimidate and cause harm."

Northam stressed that the threats and "violent rhetoric" bear resemblance to those seen prior to the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville that left one dead and dozens more injured in 2017.

"No one wants another incident like the one we saw in Charlottesville," Northam said. "We will not allow that mayhem and violence to happen here."

Northam said law enforcement officials -- including state police, capitol police, officers from the Richmond Police Department and other first responders -- were working together to ensure the safety of Monday's rally, which is expected to draw as many as 100,000 supporters, event organizers told police.

“I believe them when they say this is a peaceful event -- that’s what democracy is,” Northam said. “Unfortunately, they have unleashed something much larger, something they may not be able to control.”

The governor said the state of emergency would be lifted on Tuesday after the rally, and that weapons -- including sticks and bats, chains and projectiles and firearms -- are all prohibited on Capitol grounds.

"It makes no sense to ban every other weapon but allow firearms when intelligence shows a threat of armed militia groups storming our capitol," Northam said.

He called on the event organizers to "disavow anyone who wishes to use Monday's rally to advance a violent agenda."

"I call on them to discourage people from other states from coming to Virginia with violent intent," Northam added. "Hate intimidation and violence have no place here."

Sheriff on Virginia Dems' gun control push: 'Never seen something so strongly opposed'

Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins reacted on Friday to the Virginia state House Democratic majority pushing several gun control measures to the upper senate chamber, calling it an "overreaching agenda against the Second Amendment."

“Never have I, or anyone, seen in the Commonwealth of Virginia someone have a topic so strongly opposed as this issue and suddenly this strong uprising against it.”

Jenkins said state lawmakers believe they were elected on a "mandate" to take swift action on guns, and he believes the left-wing lawmakers are overreaching.

Va. Senate committee strikes 'assault weapons' bill, advances other proposed gun laws

One of the most controversial gun control bills proposed in the Virginia General Assembly has been killed, while others passed out of committee on Monday morning.

Senate Bill 16, proposed by Sen. Richard Saslaw, would have expanded the definition of "assault firearms" under Virginia law, outlawed their possession, and outlawed the the selling or transfer of any firearm magazine with a capacity for more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

Honest question - to all - at what point for a State or Nation does the majority's will matter?

Brexit was voted on and 'won' with less than 52% voting for it. And only 72% of the eligible population voted. Is that right/fair/proper?

With gun control and gun rights - the line seems to go up and down constantly - but it seems to be about 50% pro and 50% against + or - a few percentage points. What would the tipping point be? 52% like Brexit? 60% ? 70% ..... and if that is the tipping point for action - what is the tipping point for having a conversation where the extremes (all or nothing) aren't portrayed as the only options?

everybody is for majority rules, until its a majority they dont like passing policies they dont support.

its why even though i hate the policies, i never complained about the GOP having control of government because the majority of voters put them in congress. but when you have minorities controlling things based on nothing other than technicalities, thats the issue.

so for your example with brexit. regardless of how small the margin was, brexit was passed by the majority of people who voted. only 72% of eligible voters participation, but thats their own fault for not showing up.

i actually wish we had national referendums in this country on particular topics. we already have those at the state level, so i dont see why it would be a problem for some major issues.

abortion? national referendum. weed legalization? national referendum. we would be better off for it.

The FBI Arrested Three White Supremacists Days Before A Gun Rally That Is Attracting "Threats Of Violence"

"We're seeing threats of armed confrontation and assault on our capital," Virginia's governor has warned.

The FBI has arrested three white supremacists, two of whom have military training, days before an extremist pro-gun rally in Richmond, Virginia, which authorities say is attracting "threats of violence" from hate groups and militias.

The three men — Patrik Jordan Mathews, 27; Brian Mark Lemley Jr., 33; and William Garfield Bilbrough, 19 — are members of the white supremacist group "the Base," according to an affidavit filed in Maryland court.

The FBI did not respond to requests for comment, but the men reportedly discussed attending the rally on Monday.

"Within The Base’s encrypted chat rooms, members have discussed, among other things, recruitment, creating a white ethno-state, committing acts of violence against minority communities (including African-Americans and Jewish-Americans), the organization’s military-style training camps, and ways to make improvised explosive devices," the court documents state.

The Counter Extremism Project says the Base is a "neo-Nazi, white-supremacist network that describes itself as an 'international survivalist and self-defense network' that seeks to train their members for fighting a race war."

Mathews is an eight-year veteran of the Canadian Army Reserve who is trained in explosives. He was under investigation by the Canadian military for attempting to recruit people for the Base and his white nationalist beliefs when his car was found abandoned last August near the US border.

After he illegally crossed into the US, authorities say, he met up with Lemley and Bilbrough. Lemley and Mathews had been living together in a Delaware apartment for months, allegedly building an assault rifle and attempting to manufacture DMT, a psychedelic drug.

Lemley took the assault rifle to a Maryland gun range on Jan. 2, where an FBI agent reported that multiple bullets could be heard firing at once.

“Oh oops, it looks like I accidentally made a machine gun,” Lemley told Mathews, according to the affidavit. Five days later, Lemley ordered 1,500 rounds of ammunition.

The men were arrested on federal gun charges, as well as those related to harboring an undocumented immigrant.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced Wednesday that he’s declaring a state of emergency from Friday to Tuesday due to "threats of violence" from hate groups.

"We're seeing threats of violence," said Northam. "We're seeing threats of armed confrontation and assault on our capital."

The state of emergency includes banning all guns from the Capitol Square area in Richmond, where the state’s government buildings are located, in anticipation of the rally, which is being organized by the Virginia Citizens Defense League.

"They are not coming to peacefully protest," Northam said at his news conference. "They're coming to intimidate and cause harm."

On Thursday, a judge refused to grant Virginia Citizens Defense League's request for an injunction against the state of emergency, with Northam citing the arrests of the three men as proof that the threats are real.

A state of emergency was also called for the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville in August 2017, when far-right and extremist protesters gathered to protest the possible removal of a Confederate statue. Heather Heyer was killed and 19 others were injured when a protester drove his car into a crowd of counterprotesters.

On Monday, state Democratic leaders banned guns inside the capitol and another legislative office building. Last November, Democrats took control of the Virginia General Assembly based in part on promises of tighter gun regulations in the state.

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Governor Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency Wednesday afternoon ahead of Monday's gun rights rally at the state Capitol.

He said there are credible threats of Charlottesville style violence that could repeat at the capitol grounds on Monday. He also said that credible intelligence reveals white extremist militia groups plan to enact violence during the rally.

Potential threats include "weaponizing drones above the state Capitol" and "storming the Capitol grounds," Northam said Wednesday.

"No one wants another incident like we saw in Charlottesville in 2017. We will not allow that mayhem and violence to happen here," Northam said.

The governor urged all unnecessary personnel to stay out of Richmond Monday, out of an abundance of caution. Access will be restricted in and out of Capitol Square, officials said.

The Governor has prohibited all weapons, including firearms, from Capitol grounds.

The state of emergency is temporary and extends from Friday, Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. until Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m.

Gun rights supporters are planning to sweep into Richmond on Martin Luther King Day. Organizers from the Virginia Citizens Defense League are predicting as many as 130,000 armed protesters from across the country could rally in Capitol Square on Martin Luther King Day. But they insist they're trying to avoid the kind of deadly chaos that swept Charlottesville in the summer of 2017.

"This is just average gun owners and average Virginians coming out to support them," Stewart Rhodes, founder of far-right group Oath Keepers, said. "It has nothing to do with white nationalism."

Monday is known as Lobby Day, where members of the public are invited to meet their lawmakers and discuss the legislative agenda for the current session. Authorities said white nationalist groups plan to make a stand in the face of several gun control bulls which are expected to pass through the now Democratic controlled General Assembly.

The more crazy stunts and outlandish claims like this that get made, the more the momentum swings in the other direction. The more "militias" that show up and the more threats of violence that are made by extremist groups, the more momentum swings in the other direction.
